Ashanti Hits Studio With Lil Wayne; Talks New LP With That Grape Juice

Published: Wednesday 6th Jul 2011 by Sam

Following a lengthy hiatus, R&B star Ashanti has resurfaced. Hard at work on her 5th studio album, the singer is said to be in the final stages of recording – and seems to have saved the best for last.

For, moments ago she tweeted a shot of her and one-time Motown labelmate Lil Wayne cutting a track together in the studio. The news of Weezy’s involvement comes on the heels of  her also hitting the studio with ‘Motivation’ producer Rico Love.

That Grape Juice caught up with Ashanti at the BET Awards recently. Check out what she had to say about the project after the jump…

I sure am amped for Ms. Douglas’ new LP (though, somewhat apprehensive about it being released independently). After all, she has stepped it all the way up on every front (vocals, performances, material). Whether the masses take to that this go round will be interesting to see. For, despite her artistic progression, the last few years have seen her cast almost as the musical spawn of Satan. This, when far less talented acts stay polluting the musical arena. She may not be a Beyonce, but she’s damn sure better than the Fenty’s and co of this world.

I have 3 of her 4 albums and they’re all solid, but I don’t personally miss her.She can’t really dance or perform well enough and she definetely can’t keep my attention if she stands there with a mic singing, so…I have to respect her for working independently, though. It takes balls, so good luck for her nonetheless

BOTTOMLINE______ Ashanti was sonning these h*** since the early ’00s & now ppl wanna hate b/c of 1 flop??? well beyonce seems to be slowly slipping so who knows??? she might be able to revive things & as far as the illuminati goes, ashanti left THE INC b/c of all the s*** going on there so if anything she quit BECAUSE of the illuminati s***.. Love Ashanti. I look forward to her new project.

  18. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) July 6, 2011

@I HATE MYLES The comparisons were not needed. I just consider the Concrete Rose era a flop. She only had one song that charted and it wasn’t even a top 10 hit on the Hot 100 and the album debuted out of the top 5, while her first 2 were No.1’s.I’m not bashing her, I’m just giving facts.I actually think Concrete Rose is her best album to date

  19. ashantifancirca’01 July 6, 2011

Ashanti’s “The Way That I Love You” video was nominated for Video of The Year..that year..imma bonafide Robyn Rihanna Fenty Fan..riri has the most number singles since 2000 more than anyone elsee…ashanti had 4 top 10 songs all in one week back in ’02..and had the biggest first week sales for any female R&B artist EVER wit 503,000 sold..Dangerously in love was a little over 400k..so even then Ashanti was outsellin B..its just her performances..i love Shani and cant wait…rihanna need a break…to mature and find true love

  20. Nelz July 6, 2011

    @ASAP (AS SINCERE AS POSSIBLE)
Ppl like you is why I dont understand the meaning of a flop. How could you call a album a flop when its platinum, I cant deal with yall forreal

  21. Lincoln July 6, 2011

Did Ashanti pay you to write this crap? Ashanti’s performance, writing, etc. is no better than it was before. she is bringing nothing new to the table but jumping on the popular bandwagon of what other artists are doing.

Ashanti has never outsold Beyonce. Don’t jump first week, judge overall. All these Ashanti excuses are hilarious. How do you diss other artists when Ashanti is trying to rebuild just like other artists. And Rihanna and Beyonce are doing fine, Ashanti isnt doing anything at the moment. Beyonce sold over 300 k first week, and #1 in multiple countries, how . If that’s falling off Ashanti can only wish to fall so hard. Beyonce worse isn’t even Ashanti’s best.

  22. mhud July 6, 2011

kelly rowland and ashanti all the way..Do purchase kelly rowland’s here i am this july 26th.

  23. AshantiStan July 6, 2011

    @Lincoln
For starters Ashanti has out sold Beyonce, her debut album sold 503,000 in its first week, and her first single Foolish was #1 for 10 weeks, has Bey ever done that? . Beyonce has never came close to outselling Shan. Secondly, Shan isnt jumping on the band wagon, she was here waaaaay before all the other crappy R&B artists such as Rihanna.

  24. joojoo July 6, 2011

well rihanna has a much better voice than ashanti….ashanti’s voice is very basic and it always sounds like she is straining to sing……..and rihanna has a very attention getting voice even when she sings off pitch. ummmm and since when was ashanti an artist……all her albums pretty much sound the same and talk about the same thing………alll rihannas albums are differnt from the type of music too the image…….and when has ashnati had any type of world tour………….rihanna has had three and they get bigger every time……….so yeaa rihanna shits on ashanti with talent.image.and success

    GOTTA GO!

  25. sean July 6, 2011

I’m pretty sure ashantis vocal octave level is much greater than rihanas and of course rihanna can bring something new to nthe table when everything is given to her on a silver platter. Ashantis craft is rihannas joke, which down the years rihanna will be just as spoiled as the next one when the youngsters move on to the next one. Ashanti has been around for almost and still can garner success (even if not on the same platform) and whatever she does.

Concrete Rose is not a flop. Its success came short of what her previous albums sold, but look at the circumstances… technically she only released one single from the project (dlt was not promoted) and due to legal situations def jam backed away from the label and the project.. during the first two eras she released two/three major singles from the projects and had full label support.

Ugh I’m not going to waste too much time on here. Ashanti is successful in ways that none of these new girls will be and I truly believe that her true time is coming.. she’s going to give us HER this time around. Her all.

And besides, people argue her relevance, but be real.. her first cd released 9 1/2 years ago… she’s had a 4 year hiatus and now a 3 year hiatus… roughly she’s had almost 8 years of downtime.. with random projects in between time.. and still maintains her name in music history, her records (except for one) still have not been beat.. and she’s still the #3 most susccessful female r&b star of the past decade.. not bad and still not broke.. so who’s winning??? Ashanti! 🙂

RIHANNA CAN RECREATE HERSELF ON ALBUM DUE TO THE FACT SHE NOTHING MORE THAN A SIMPLE IMAGE……NO TRUE, REAL OR RAW TALENT….NO FORM, NO BALANCE VERY EASY MOVED AND MOLDED….DONT MAKE ME CHOP YOUR NECK OFF.

  27. t-blaze July 6, 2011

LINCOLN HONEY…ASHANTI SPANKED BEYONCE ASS TOO MANY TIMES. ASHANTI IS THE FIRST FEMALE TO DEBUT AT 500,000 PLUS, KICKED BEYONCE WELL ESTABLISHED ASS AND SOLO CD PUSHING TO NUMBER TWO AND ASHANTI KEPT HER HEELS IN BEYONCE NECK WITH CHAPTER BEING NUMBER ONE FOR 2 WEEKS….ASHANTI HAD THREE SONG IN THE TOP TEN THE FEAT ONLY TO BE TIED TO THE BEATLES…DONT MAKE ME GO THERE…PRESENT DAY ASHANTI STILL IS SO RELEVANT AND SHE DIDNT HAVE TO HAVE MEMBER OF HER GROUP SIGN TO PARLAY THE BACK ROLE SO THAT SHE CAN SHINE…ASHANTI HAS NEVER BEEN CALLED A LIAR OR A THEIF CLAIMING SHE WROTE SONG SHE SIMPLY DIDNT WRITE OR BETTER SAY YOU WROTE A SONG THAT OLDER THAN YOU.

  28. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) July 6, 2011

@NELZ You’re right about the word ‘flop’ being overused, but Concrete Rose was a flop AS AN ERA because it destroyed her career, she lost her momentum and she only had 1 single and 2 videos.
When it comes to ‘The Declaration’ era, it flopped too, because she lost all her worldwide appeal that she had gained with ‘Only You’ and there was AGAIN only one really successful single,
A flop is not only about certifications

  29. number1k9 July 6, 2011

1st off everyone is entitled to their opinion.

But to get to my points, many want to call Ashanti’s ‘Concrete Rose’ era/album flop. Di the era resignate like past eras, not so much. Did she release as many promoted singles, no. Was her label promoting her like they were before, no. Etc. BUT still out of all of that, she managed to sell over a million copies of that album. If that is a flop in your mind, great. but to me thats definitely accomplishing a feat!

    ON TO THE NEW ALBUM-2011.
I am excited for new Ashanti music. Many people simply like to hate and/or be overly critical of Ashanti, why? I have no clue because you cannot deny that she has grown in ways as an artist.

As for this Lil’ Wayne track, I really hope it isn’t standard Wayne, hope he gave Ashanti something super hot to work with-not saying it needs to be single materiel, but just as hot as songs like the T.I. assisted “Still Down.”

New single should be out at the latest by July 19th. And no matter how many people continue to try and debate Ashanti for the worse, I am excited for the new music, single and album. I will be buying because Ashanti has never disappointed when it comes to selecting good album materiel! ! ! !

  30. Remey July 6, 2011

Ashanti better than Rihanna? I’ll leave that one alone for another day.

Anywayz… I love Ashanti, but she’s been away from the industry to long to determine whether or not she will be picked up by the masses again. She is obviously talented, but when she enters the scene, she must compete with megastars that she just can’t seem to rival with. Ashanti entered the scene with Bey, but unfortunately, she never garnered the cross over appeal Bey did. Therefore, in an era with mainstream music, does Ashanti stand a chance to have an LP with commercial success?

Singing “Baby, Baby, Baby” after every song is not going to cut it right now. However, with Bey singing about Girls Running the World (in a patriarchal society)….maybe things can change. But releasing this album at the right time may do wonders for her. Timing is always important. It’s work for plenty of artists. EXAMPLE 1: RIHANNA. Releasing LOUD in November was genius. Yea, artists like Kanye and Nicki came out with their albums but they are not in Ri’s genre, so it didn’t affect her. Heavy hitters like Brit, Gaga, Adele, and Bey hadn’t released anything yet. Leaving the music scene to be dominated.

Ashani is definitely gonna go the Kelly Rowland route being tht she has had major success with Motivation…. I see her working in the studio with Wayne & Rico Love. I’m interested to see what she’s gonna come out with; she’s been gone for too long; idk why these artist do tht!
