Has Brandy Signed With J Records / RCA ?

Published: Thursday 4th Aug 2011 by Sam

Following months of speculation, it finally appears R&B star Brandy is no longer a free agent.

Full story after the jump…

That Grape Juice received reliable word back in March that the former ‘Moesha’ star was finalizing a new record deal with a “major”.

Fast forward five months and all signs point to the label in question being J Records. Ironically a sub-division of Sony Music (the same label group Ms. Norwood’s last label, Epic, is housed at), the first inkling of her involvement with J was the presence of Breyon Prescott in the trailer for her new reality show. Billed as her “business partner”, Prescott (a well-known J Records exec) revealed that he “signed her to the label”.

What’s more, the official site for the label have begun posting news updates on the 32 year old. Practice which is exclusively reserved for their own artists.

Adding her own salt and pepper to the speculation, the singer this week retweeted the following fan message sent to her on Twitter:

RockBoiZo: I bet you @4everBrandy is signed to J Records. I got a strong feeling!

Home to the likes of Alicia Keys, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, and Monica, the label is viewed by many as ‘the’ hub for premium R&B in a musical climate; a climate which – by and large – prioritizes Pop and Electro beats. As such, with Brandy expressing a desire to return to her R&B roots (after ‘Human’s Pop-y flare), J seems like the surest of fits.

An official announcement is believed to be imminent.

I believe so, it’s been rumored to be for some time now. I just never pictured her on the same label as Monica. #Odd! I guess, I can’t think of another label that suits her better. J Records seem very attentive and they do map out well the needs of their artist individually. So, I’m excited for Brandy! I want this comeback to be major!

  5. The G-List Society August 4, 2011

That is a great move for her or better yet going back to Epic under LA Reid. Reid can pull far more success out of Brandy than Ciara.

  6. The G-List Society August 4, 2011

Brandy PLEEEEEEEEZE make that comeback us die-hard fans have been waiting for…You are the real threat to Bee-YAWN-say

  7. YOOSONDALOOSE August 4, 2011

    Ohh good for her!
She needs a good record label behind her.
Good luck to Brandy, never a huge fan, but hey…

  8. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) August 4, 2011

Look, if it’s J, I don’t really like it.They abandon all their releases after 2 singles and they never give their artists the chance to do great videos.
Whatever, as long as they give her a decent budget and advise her about the right direction WITHOUT taking her creative freedom away from her, it will be a good thing for her.

  9. MISHKA August 4, 2011

Good for her. Time to stop that real TV sh%t and bing back the music.

  10. Steffon August 4, 2011

I just really hope and pray for the best for BRANDY this time around. She really deserves to shine. I hope J Records is in this 100%. Can’t wait for the new album

🙂 Gimmie that new music girl!!!!

  12. REALTALK 101 August 4, 2011

Brandy’s problem is she has had too much creative freedom. She needs to let someone else guide her career like in the beginning. The hypocritical Im innocent thing is not working for her.
This seems like a “let’s toss this against the wall and see if it’ll work” kinda deal cause based on what we’ve seen from Brandy’s last few projects it would’ve beeen better to find the next Brandy than revisit the original one. I’m just sayin……………………….

OMG!!!!! U guys put my tweet on here!! I almost died when she retweeted me being as though i am a Brandy STAN! But yeah, all clues point to her being signed to J Records, and if you go to RCA’s website u would see a video of her discussing the Majors and Minors TV show! Biggups to Thatgrapejuice.net for sharing my tweet with everyone!

  17. MH August 4, 2011

I actually like J Records moreso than many of the other labels. I think that would be a great fit for Brandy, I’m excited for her.

I don’t mind Brandy doing pop as well. Her voice can do anything. As long as it isn’t too generic.

Brandy should do R&B-Pop the same thing that MJ, Beyonce, and Rihanna does !

  27. happy August 4, 2011

Jennifer Hudson is signed to Arista Records, the label of her idol Whitney Houston. Fact check That grape juice and get it right.

    Good luck Brandy.

  28. kwame August 4, 2011

BRANDY IS BACK TO SLAY. #CANT WAIT!!!!!!

  29. Set it Straiter August 4, 2011

Love Brandy.. yeah.. any label shes on.. just needs to treat her with the respect as an artist and not some new generation signee.. her mistake with Human is that she gave more control to the producers/executives for that project. This time round I cant see her becoming the puppet, with someone else pulling the strings..she had multiple deals offered to her..so she would have chose wisely.

  30. Jusnot4m33 August 4, 2011

@ RI RI THE FOOL… Yes Monica is gold. And to mind u she went gold after a month wit only 2 single and ONLY promoted 1,” Everything To Me” #1 -7weeks . She never promoted Love All Over Me.. and still the fans made it to #2.. Monica was too busy running around town getting married. and after going GOLD. She started working on her New Album..so i beleive Monica did a GREAT job.. selling 650-700k .. 2 more promoted singles wouldve made Still Standing platinum..
For monica to have a small fanbase. as hater put it. We are loyal.. Monica is jus not a artist to REALLY promote an album

  31. Jusnot4m33 August 4, 2011

ANNNNNND Jennifer Hudson.. Is signed to J records.. Thank You

  32. Tristan August 4, 2011

Brandy has been making humongous moves lately and it looks like she’s headed in the right direction. I’m happy for her and I wish her the best.

  33. thetruth August 4, 2011

the only one with a budget over there is A. Keys. If Larry Johnson is the A&R, same fate will happen to brandy as has J.Hud, Fantasia, Monica & Jazmine Sullivan… promotion for one single and perhaps a second for a 10 track album. If she uses the same producers as those aforementioned I’m done. Brandy hasn’t sold because she lost her musical identity after Full Moon – Rodney dished that sound out to everyone he came in contact with; Afrodisiac would’ve been better had it been Aaliyah with Timbaland, Human was good but ballad heavy with a very pop sound.

  34. Teflon Boy August 4, 2011

This seems like a “let’s toss this against the wall and see if it’ll work” kinda deal cause based on what we’ve seen from Brandy’s last few projects it would’ve beeen better to find the next Brandy than revisit the original one. I’m just sayin……………………….,

^Agreed, but I took the above more as ‘find the next sound for Brandy rather than going back to an old formula’. Personally, I’m just concerned as to what she and they think going back to rnb means? As far as I’m concerned both with Full Moon and Afro, Brandy was moving in a more interesting direction…, albeit abandoned Full Moon after falling pregnant and got so distracted by Beyonce during Afro’s promo she dyed her hair blond, started dancing and wearing odd and revealing clothes. Basically, the music has not been the issue it has been the continued sloppy and misguided way it’s been handled by her label but most importantly herself. I say this as a fan who has had enough of the excuses.

Last up, I would hate hate hate to see Brandy using the same producers as any of that bunch. Sorry but they (with the possible exception of Alicia Keys) are some of the most boring and creatively stifled artists in the game. Brandy to me has the potential to be the Black Bjork…, i.e. Urban but Bold and Unique…, IMhO that would work for her as long as she delivers it with confidence and actually gets off her ass and PROMOTE properly and consistently.

  35. REALTALK 101 August 4, 2011

Let’s be real people. Brandy hasnt shown the need or ability to step her game up. Hit songs are visual and Brandy isnt giving us anything special to look at either. Put that with her same ole same ole sound and you get “FLOP”. When I say something different I mean as a singer not the B-rocka nonsense. I would much rather see a new Brandy discovered than the old one and what I mean by that is a new 15+ year old with some star appeal and vocal ability. A lackluster same ole, same ole artist will not get platinum support so if their expecting 100 to 200 thousand sales then Brandy should be able to get that, other than that it’s off into the sunset unless she pull a serious rabbit out of her hat and gets a damn makerover including surgery. and thats REALTALK all day, Im just saying……….

  36. nice_gurl August 4, 2011

This looks true to me. Good news!!!

  37. kiddontplay August 9, 2011

To be honest~ No matter the stages or whatever you wanna call it! No one has done what Brandy has done, If she wants to go back to the style of the first Album fine with me! Because no one has done what Brandy has done for R&B Music! That’s Why Brandy is roundly respected! J-Records is home of Legends, Clive Davis inks this company! Brandy is in the rank with Witney and Mariah if you ask me! She is a legend a Young legend if you ask Oprah and other famous ones! She still has years to complete the success she has already achieved! I am honored that she is on the rooster with such famous and relative ppl! I do agree with her being guided, like on the first album, I to do agree with Rodney being responsible for allowing so many others to still her sound! She is the reason he is as famous as a producer as he is! But, this time around you can visible tell that Ms. Norwood is ready, Dancing with Stars showed you that she was no longer that little girl that everyone wanted her to remain, she is a woman! She is ready to show you the next stage of Brandy! She is even returning to the big screen, I think her and her management are really mapping it out, Because to be honest, there is only one Brandy! She has done alot in her youth, but now she is really to do it all over again as Brandy Norwood! J-records girl have done well! I see all these comments about this and that, but Fantasia recieved a grammy, J-hudson is very well known, Monica is good and already ready to put out another album, Whitney is Whitney whatever she puts out will sale! And besides ppl like half of you don’t buy albums! Brandy is ready, J-Records be sure that she does the Job! Love Brandy!!!!!

  38. kiddontplay August 9, 2011

@RealTalk 101 another 15 years old is not about to come out and be like Brandy when she was 15, times have changed!!!They come out @ 9 and play in the studio! (whiPMy hair)! Brandy at 14, shyt @ 9 years old was singing classical musical, if you know what classical music is! She doesn’t need plastic surgery @ this point! Then she wouldn’t be Brandy, she looks different she doesn’t look bad, so therefor plastic surgery is for you and Vivica! Only one of Brandy’s Album was considered a Flop, and to be honest it was a good album and no matter how you put it hater, Brandy is a self made star, she didn’t have to f*** to get hers! Her mama taught her what they teach you in the South, s**** and work! Same ol Artist, you sound stupid with growth comes change and Brandy has changed so go head on!
