With an an album to promote, R&B/Dance diva Kelly Rowland shows no sign of slowing down. And although many long to see her hit TV shows ala Leno, it doesn’t mean the 30 year old songbird isn’t performing. Case, point, example, her performances at the Splash Bash in Washington yesterday.

LOOK AT JENNIFER HUDSON, THE ALBUM PROMO RELEASE WAS EXCEPTIONALLY HANDLED, HONESTLY KUDOS TO HER TEAM. SHE WAS ON IDOL, VIEW, WENDY WILLIAMS, 106 AND PARK (WITH A MINI CONCERT I MIGHT ADD), EVEN DANCING WITH THE STARS. OKAY I UNDERSTAND THAT SOME OF THESE SHOWS HAVE GONE OF THE AIR FOR SUMMER HIATUS BUT SOME ARE STILL ON APPARENTLY. THAT ALBUM WOULD HAVE OPENED MUCH MORE STRONGLY IS SHE HAD DONE MORE TELEVISED PERFORMANCES. AS ONE OF THE WRITERS ON THIS BLOG SAYS, ” STRIKE IT WHILST IT IS HOT”. Anyway to Ojie King I def understand your frustration with the promotion of this album, but no need to worry. She and her team are looking for longevity with this project. I actually see it happening. Especially with her Xfactor spot & upcoming tour.
Now @Ojie you also mention looked at the promotion J. Hudson had but I want you to look at her current numbers as well. Yea she had a higher debut for first week sales then Kelly. But a week after the record came out no one was talking about that album. To be honest I was disappointed because the album sucks. It sound like she made it for old people. Nonetheless she is a great talent so she is able to bounce back.
Back to Kelly. No that was not Wayne in the background it was ACE HOOD. As frustrated as we all have been about the promotion of this album I trust that things will only get better from here. Vocals were very good here. She just needs to do it on TV. There are a lot of things they need to get right. The mic, the sound and the in-ears. On top of that her voice and stamina gotta be ready. It’s getting better. She’s sounding good.

Sounds like she’s been practicing a lot. She gets out of breath on some parts, but she was really good. And those dancers are so s***…but I was looking at Kelly most of the time. And I love that she performed Bad Habit…one of my fave songs of hers.

A lot of people are not seeing the direction her mgmt is taking her in. Yes, Kelly has been around for 15 + years, but not as a solo *leading* artist and depending on the person (of course) this can be damaging if a solo career is attempted later on. She was trained right alongside the other girls in the group, but as the saying goes “train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he shall not depart”. This is why in earlier interviews she was cited as saying that she preferred being in a group as opposed to being a solo act. Who says that- besides a ‘trained’ person?
That is exactly what happened to Kelly very early on. She was in a sense ‘reared’ to be the backup, standby, second- even though all along she [probably] wanted more as can be evidenced by the relentless pursuit of a a solo career.
Kelly has always had a problem with stage fright. However, lack of solo confidence can play a part in this as well and I believe that her mgmt is aware of this thus the reason why she is doing small venues to start.
Her mgmt’s strategy has many layers to it. This is a grass roots push in many ways. She’s not re-connecting, but connecting, for the 1st time, with her urban audience in an almost interpersonal way. The populace at large have never known her as a ‘solo’ act. This is exhibited time and time again on every blog that i visit- urban or otherwise. There’s the obvious and usual comparisons, but then there is the ‘she’s boring-she’s a backup signer, ‘she doesn’t know what she wants to be’ comments.
The problem is that *YOU* don’t know who *SHE* is as a *solo act*. The only introduction that any of us have been afforded, looking at the years under previous mgmt of course, is with that of a backup singer who does *a few side projects*. She is acquainting you, for the 1st time, with who she really is and she will have to take baby steps to accomplish this.
Kelly is like any other artist with something to say through song and deed- that she is multi-dimensional. She does not wish to be confined by any genre in a way that limits her art. The bottom line is this …. to understand the artistry behind any talent one needs only to *want* to understand. If you don’t want to understand you won’t. However, if you do then I think she just might surprise us all.
I totally agree with you ROC. I don’t see a fault in her management. There is one thing I saw as a problem and that was lack of promo the weeks before the release and THAT was due to Kelly taking the XFACTOR job which held auditions during that time that she had to be a part of.
@ OJIE KING..I feel your frustration with the lack of promo. It frustrated me too that she had obligations in the UK when her album was coming out…Bad scheduling yes…but I think the album is beginning to speak for itself and she has started a pretty decent promo schedule in the last week or two. It’s going to be one of those albums that maintains somewhat steady sales for a while I think as her singles come out gain airplay. The ONLY reason she didn’t do over 100K first week is lack of promo and that bothered me.

Please remember that as soon as Kelly left Matthew she had a worldwide hit, won a grammy with David Guetta, had a number one dance record, and has been on the grind ever since. She’s got everyone’s attention now…We have to see what’s she’s going to do with it.
