Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated R&B releases of the year, Kelly Rowland‘s ‘Here I Am’ finally hit stores last week. And after 7 days on shelves, the LP’s first week sales are now in.

According to industry outlet Hits Daily Double, Rowland’s third studio set shifted 76,399 copies, landing it at #3 on the Billboard 200. And though fans will have to wait for Soundscan’s tally for final verification, history has shown their figures to not be far off.
Admittedly eager to see the album cross the 100,000 mark, it’s safe to say the numbers are somewhat reflective of the promotion prior to week of release. Yours truly has said it many a time, and can’t say it enough: it’s important to generate mass awareness of a project prior to its store date. For, time in and out, we’ve seen many a project try and fail to sustain sales by hitting every platform going during release week (see: Jennifer Hudson’s ‘I Remember Me’).
Luckily for Kelly, there are many an untouched stage awaiting her stiletto’s (see: Lopez Tonight, Ellen, Fallon, Kimmel, The View, 106 & Park, among others). And with her telling That Grape Juice that longevity is the priority with this project, we’re sure hoping all pans out as planned. She already has a successful ‘face’ on the album with ‘Motivation’; it’s simply time to keep the momentum going…starting with the elusive ‘Lay It On Me’ video!

This album has life for days, I am a Kelly fan and at first the album did not sit well with me. But now after a few spins, it is AMAZING. Def contemporary R&B for sure, but fresh and it is nice to hear Kelly on something new. I cannot wait for the U.K. version for all the new dance music that has not yet leaked (crosses fingers) and I am sure with the sales for the U.K. version, she will go platinum WORLWIDE just like a certain Beyonce recently has. Just not as fast, because it is sad to say, but we know who has the bigger star. And that is fine, you do not have to be a Beyonce, Gaga or Britney, to make FIRE music and be a talented, s***, performing artist. And for her sake, Kelly has all of the those. Much love and luck to her.

Well this is pretty much exactly what was expected. Hits Daily Double is usually right on and no more than a couple thousand off. Being that fact that her promo was basically NON existent the weeks before her album came out these numbers are respectable.
Although I think she could have easily reached 100k if she had just gotten her ass on some shows and performed. Like, why the hell didn’t she even perform on 106? Hell they added an extra hour onto the show, you can’t tell me there wasn’t enough time to fit her in for a performance! SMH!
I agree with Sam, she needs to get her ass on some late night shows and PERFORM. I can’t understand why she couldn’t book any of these shows before her album release but I guess it’s never to late. Even Lloyd was on Lopez Tonite! Since ‘Motivation’ is a s** song, I don’t think it is the type of song she can perform on a morning show so late night shows are her best bet.
Even though I think promotion will ‘help’ I just can’t see this album being a big success. I know people say first week sales aren’t everything, and they aren’t, but for Kelly I think her first week sales were an indication that most people just aren’t interested in her. ‘Motivation’ got a lot of people’s attention but clearly not enough to get people to buy her ish, ad I can ‘t see any other single being as successful sa ‘Motivation’. I honestly can’t see this album even going Gold in the US.

I wish the best for Kelly, but i agree w/ the person who said that Mathew Knowles is no longer the problem. She did have slightly better promo under him and she had Higher sales. She also won a Grammy as a solo artist under his management. It’s the truth. Her single may have went #1 on the R&B charts but the song really made no impact outside of Urban radio, honestly. However she could’ve still had better numbers w/ more of a push. Take for instance Monica’s Last album, She had a #1 R&B single “Everything to Me” for 7 weeks straight and she released her album in March. She pushed 184K her first week. I know people would say Monica is more established than Kelly (Solo wise), but they both had similar situations where they had to prove they got it. Monica was on All the Morning and Late night shows doing as much as she could that first week (at least) to let folks know the album was out.
Kelly IMO, just isn’t hungry enough. There are people who don’t have all the factors of a great entertainer, however their drive and determination to succeed is what sets them apart from the rest. I’m not a Rihanna fan by any means and I don’t think she has an ounce of talent, but what she does have is drive. She will work and promote a project until the rooster crows. You have to sell your product. You can’t just throw it out there in hopes that people will buy it. That is what Kelly needs to do.
There’s no reason why there has only been 2 televised performances of Motivation so far. She should have been everywhere since the song initially blew up performing and promoting. You have to capitalize off that type of thing. Strike while the iron is hot. You have to build a fanbase and core audience. Kelly hasn’t done that yet and her fans can’t blame anyone else but Kelly and her team. Sure people knew her from Destiny’s Child, but that shouldn’t be a reason people check out your album. Show us why we should check out your album.
I wish her the best, even though I didn’t like the album. I hope that her team has her best interest at heart and most of all, I hope Kelly wants this enough. My two cents.

I think Kelly still has a chance to create buzz. She just has to be careful with her single choices. Kelly has a lot of people rooting for her and viewing her as an underdog. That means people are out there itching to see her win. All that she has to do is deliver. There’s a difference between having a hit and a smash. Today’s artist can easily get a hit. If you choose to have one hit sell an album (especially in debut week) it has to be a smash. Here I am is honestly a very average album – with a few potential smash hits! What she should be doing is connecting with her fans and seeing which ones are fan favorites. In this case her fans seem to back everything she does, so she might want to see what appeals to her casual listeners too. I think she won’t really turn things around until she drops “Feeling me right now” or “Turn it Up”. I hope she does. Kelly does need to focus on promotion. She also has to work on her live shows. This is far from over, but she has to take an honest look at things!

1. Motivation took so long, Why couldn’t she release “Lay it On Me” in June?
2. She needed 2 or 3 more hits before releasing the album.
3. She still needs a huge fanbase. Motivation isn’t enough.
4. There wasn’t much hype happening weeks before the album was released. She could’ve released a s*** video for “Lay It On Me” – that would sure get people’s attention!

I bought the album and the album is amazing. I love it from beginning to end. not my favorite album by her ‘Ms. Kelly’ holds that spot . But this album shows her versatility and talent in never before seen way from the auto-tune of ‘I’m Dat Chick’ intimacy of ‘Feeling You Right Now’ and ‘Keep It Between Us’ . The Up-tempo of ‘Lay It On Me’ definitely shows potential of being another song to grace the top of the R&B charts as did ‘Motivation. But also grace her a Top 10 on the Hot 100. However it may go, i wish her well and would like this album to show commercial success for her and longevity. She deserves it.

I just think that she’s picking the wrong singles and not pushing the album enough. I still think she has talent (even more so than some artist that are doing very well these days). It’s just that Kelly doesn’t have direction, even though it appears that she does this era. The best I’ve seen from Kelly was “Like This” and “Work” from the Ms. Kelly era. My problem with Kellys album is.. 4 is REAL CLASSIC R&B MUSIC, & if you’re wondering whether Im saying that Here I Am isnt, yes, thats EXACTLY what im saying. Kelly sounds the same on damn near every track, this Simple repetitive generic Basic Keri Hilson Chris Brown Radio rubbish? Poor thing sounds like a chimpmunk met Brandy under water, RU seriouS?? 😕

Ummm, TGJ, I Remember Me sold 170K and debut at #2 and has sold over 400K since it’s release. But anyway back to Kelly. I personally don’t think that 76K is bad, that’s actually pretty decent considering her promo and marketing was so late, Motivation was only a hit in the Urban markets and the hype around this album didn’t start until 2-3 weeks ago, or right after her BET Awards performance but she didn’t capitalize on that hype. The 76K who bought this album are the fans who love Motivation. Once she starts promoting more, which I am pretty she’ll do in the upcoming 2-3 weeks and releases future singles, Here I Am will sell well. Lay It on Me has the potential to crossover to Pop markets and give her some footing in that market and the album has several songs such as Feeling Me Right Now, Keep It Between Us, Turn It Up, Down for Whatever, All of the Night and I’m Dat Chick that are single material. They are all very radio friendly songs so that’ll definitely increase her sales. I am predicting her overall sales will be around 800K in the US and around 2 million WW because Kelly does have a huge international fanbase and songs like Lay It on Me, Down for Whatever, Turn It Up and All of the Night can do very well on the charts overseas.

I really thought she’d do less. It is true that there was little promotion for this album.
The problem is too many people bought into the hype and got cocky. Mainly because there was a backlash against Beyonce and a few others brewing that fizzled out. As much as I am a fan of Kelly, I have to say she was slightly getting cocky from the “great my time to shine” hype. Her team got too overconfident thinking the cd was going to sell off Motivation only. That left fans with impatiently waiting for a follow up, no promotion, lackluster performances after the awesome BET performance, and once the songs were leaked people weren’t feeling it. It doesn’t help people and critics are calling the cd mediocre. The media and bloggers played into this because they were so eager to do a Kelly v. Bey story, they hyped her up where the expectations were too high. There’s plenty of factors. The lesson Kelly should take from this is don’t believe the hype, get a team who has better judgment and work on better performances and material. I like the cd but I admit it’s not all that. It has good songs but it’s time to retire the Guetta stuff and trends. Be herself like she was for Simply Deep. And Lay It On Me is not a good follow up, especially when there’s a song that sounds like it already on the radio. Turn It Up or Dat Chick would have been stronger. A few mentioned Letoya, but she hit #1 with strong numbers because it came out of nowhere and she promoted the hell out of her music on Myspace.
I’m sorry but people that keep saying she is better worldwide. Do you know she has the best selling album in America. That worldwide thing is just a hype. She really isn’t that big worldwide.
Secondly people that said she didn’t promote it that’s why it tanked. That’s a lie. Anybody that listens to radio and bought motivation should follow the album to know its release date. Every celebrity with a Twitter account with more than a million followers tweeted about the album. The noise about bet awards, every website had a Kelly banner( atrl, necole bitchie, mediatakeout,Sandra rose, vibe, yahoo trending, billboard, jay leno, hell her own Twitter with growing followers everyday. Knock it off with the promo thing. Every body knew Kelly had an album out. This album would do the same as Ms.Kelly.

Kelly isn’t an solo artist period. She could’ve been in the early years of Destiny’s Child.
However years of playing second fiddle to Beyonce has took its true toll.
Remember when they first came out? Kelly was just as good as an singer as Beyonce
Around the survivor era years after they debuted. Beyonce was kind of thrown at us to be leader in the wake of letoya and latavia leaving.
Kelly used to could hold her own.
She says in recent interviews she was looking for the confident type music.
She had that with miss Kelly. Hell simply deep has her finest vocal moments ever!
And that’s her debut album.

I have said it and I shall say it again…SIMPLY DEEP is Kelly’s finest album to date…..With “Here I am”, she seems to be trying so hard to capture more of an urban fan base and the album itself is mediocre to the fullest………In fact, the album is terrible…can’t believe she took one year to make such an album……..I agree with everything you mentioned……She’s still in her slumber….hopefully she wakes up and smells the coffee.
I still listen to SIMPLY DEEP today…”Beyond Imagination” is my jam!!!!!!!
Kelly will never make it big as an R&B singer….NEVER…she needs to stop fooling herself about sustaining R&B and Dance…IT WILL NOT WORK….

Ive been waiting for an uptempo album from ms kelly so ‘here i am’ was right on time – marrying swag with her classic vocals – this is kelly’s “control” moment and lets face it – when kelly was giving deep material no one purchased it – now shes having fun and im having fun right along with her and when she releases her dance album later this year i will be first to purchase as well! work!
Stop trying to play kelly as this new artist. Yes as a DC member she’s an underdog, compared to the rihanna’s, Gaga’s . She should not be an underdog because she’s been out longer than they have been. Kelly is a wannabe. Ok, enough! It’s almost as if I woke up and everyone drunk on stupid.
To address a few points.
1) promotion. Yes there was the bet performance but that was a month ago. The twitter comment is nonsense and means nothing really. Kelly has loads of friends in the industry and that’s it. That wasn’t promotion.
2)work ethic and ambition: Kelly has huge work ethic, she has a lot of projects going on both sides of the pond. Also keep in mind that Kelly saw a situation she wasn’t happy about (Matthew) and did something about it, as a result she got a new label, connections and judging spot on britains franchise.. That would nothappen if she was still with Matthew/music world..
3) the numbers. They aren’t terrible. Please keep in mind that although Kelly came from dc, she is having to start over. She had been gone for 4 years, the industry waits on nobody. Apart from wlto, Kelly had no presense on the us charts.
4) b stans. Now I love beyonce but her stans are the most obnoxious folks on the net!
Newsflash, not everything is about her! This project is nothing to do with her. Really bizarre the way some of y’all took Kelly leaving Matthew as a personal affront to beyonce.. Kelly saw a situation in her career she wasn’t happy with, and did something.. and she was rewarded! She left musicworkd gracefully and with dignity.
How and why you want to relish in her “failure” is beyond me.

So I’m at the music store on the 27th asking for “Here I Am”, and theyre like huh wtf in the face. Well, at least in South Africa. Theres still a lot of work to be done globally as well i.t.o distribution/legal etc. Empty handed fans -that sort of thing. But i heard clips on itunes. Ms Kelly was MUCH more consistent. You know, the same mood right through. The sight of those Euro songs in the listing makes you reconsider which is just how plenty sales may hv been lost. I wanted kelly to srve this as papa knowles’ humble pie but hey i guess :-\…

and what people don’t understand in that those comments “writing her off” come from people that have been following Kelly’s career ever since before her solo days. she does not know how to promote herself period. as a (former) K-Row stan I have waited and waited and waited. excuses have been made, labels and managing teams have been switched and I was so happy to see Motivation be a huge R&B hit! but apart from that, it seems nothing’s changed.
These album sales are disappointing, but overall they aren’t that bad. I mean, at least she was able to finally release an album with a #1 R&B/Hip-Hop and Top 20 single. Many singers like Mya, Christina Milian, Teairra Mari, Cassie, ect don’t even get a chance to release an album! It could’ve been worse. At least she sold more than that flop CERROR and actually had an urban hit. “Ride” was never a hit, it didn’t even crack the Top 40, it only reached #41. So, all she needs to do now is be consistant with the promotion. To be honest, her label sucks, but she’s trying to do best with what she has. If you notice, they aren’t used to having successful artists and when they finally do get one, they don’t have any money for them. Hopefully after getting money from these sales they can spend it on more airtime. Kelly really needs it!

We have exhausted all excuses for Kelly…point blank period. People want to say that Kelly didn’t get the same treatment as Bey, but I’m almost positive that they were ALL working with some type of vocal coach/ voice lessons. So why is it that 10 years after her solo career begins…her live vocals are still horrible after 15 years in the industry? I saw her on Jay Leno, and the overall performance was entertaining, but it was hard to watch because she didn’t sound very good. I mean…I felt a huge case of second hand embarrassment for her. Now that’s unacceptable for someone who has been in the game for as long as she has. People are accepting and settling for anything with Kelly right now because they feel sorry for her, and most of all people want to see her out shine Bey. The problem with that is they are on two totally different levels, and in the end Kelly is the one who suffers from it. People may not like Beyonce (for whatever reason), but they KNOW that she delivers……Kelly, on the other hand, depends on the day of the week.
