Michelle Williams Shares Album Details

Lately the ladies of DC3 have been making quite the (collective and separate) splash across charts and headlines alike.  And, with former members Kelly Rowland and Beyonce both currently riding Billboard 200’s top 10, Michelle Williams is said to be readying her own return to the charts.  In an in depth interview with our friends over at The BoomBox the ‘We Break the Dawn’ singer broke news about her upcoming album – sounds, guests, and much more.

Q: What mindset are you going into with your fourth solo album being that ‘Love Gun’ is the first song we’re hearing?

Actually, that song was kinda like an accident, first of all that I even recorded it because I’ve been toying with the direction of the music. Everybody seemed to absolutely enjoy it, but at the end of the day, I have to have the final say on the direction.  But I’m glad everyone is loving it but I doubt that’s the sole direction of this next record, unfortunately.

Q: ‘Love Gun’ is a buzz record, but that may not even end up on the final album. What else have you done?

I recorded so many different, extra songs. I’ve just been enjoying the freedom to do that, like nobody telling me like, “You gotta do this. You gotta work with this person. You gotta do that.” So I’ve been all over the place exploring new producers, new sounds.

Q:  Do you feel like you’re going to move more towards the R&B side then?

The cool thing about doing dance music is I like how when I did it live, it kinda had like an alternative R&B kinda sound to it. I’ve always adored Adele and I’m so happy that she’s having this massive success of real music. I just didn’t want, like when I talk about real music, like the real use of the instruments, I didn’t want that to die down.

Q:  Who’s the last person you went into the studio to record with?

I just did something with Talib Kweli like last week. I love all types of music.  So when Talib Kweli expressed an interest, I was like, “Really? The hip-hop want to work with the church girl? OK lets go.”  That was for his project but the feeling is definitely mutual for him to do something for me for the future.

Q:  Any time you are pictured together with Beyonce and Kelly Rowland, there’s immediate reunion talk. How do you feel about that?

You know what, yes, Destiny’s Child is reuniting. Where? At the next event where we all decide to show up at [laughs]. But you know what, we love it and the fact that people are still asking and wondering. It could be the opposite reaction. It could be, “No! Stay home.” It could be that.

Q:  What would have to happen for a definite Destiny’s Child reunion to occur?

We would have to talk about it. We get so overwhelmed with seeing each other and we’re always talking about girl stuff and gossiping stuff, that that’s something that hasn’t crossed — I shouldn’t say it hasn’t crossed our mind — nobody has been the first to just say something.

    Beyonce is doing her thing! Kelly Rowland is killing it too and doing big things, i kinda feel sorry for Michelle

    i mean shes nice n everything, shes put out some decent albums but its about time she got a hit, i mean Damn, none of Michelle’s singles have even made the Bubbling Under Chart! smh

    time to step your game up Chelle, we’re rooting for you, you are the under – under – under dog! lol

  9. MichelleWFan August 4, 2011

    I actually think Michelle would be the one on the group that would be totally against having a reunion anytime soon. So please get off her d***.

    beyonce was gtting too much shine when the other members flopped but,I bet she would love a reunion now that the grammys are approaching

  13. MaZ August 4, 2011

    Go ‘Chelle! Working with Talib Kweli is definitely a good thing!

    She should try a Jazz-Hip Hop fusion sound.

    Well I’m hoping she will fair much better this time around under a new label and new management.

    And contrary to the beliefs, she has been successful. Always gets positive critique on her acting chops, her Unexpected album spawned top hits considering the lack of promotion and it was something new (back then).

    Fact is she can rule the theaters and the movies if given a chance and with a new label and management – she can definitely be on top of the music world as well. Me, personally, I would love to see her acting chops on the big screen. People need to see how talented she really is. In the right role, she could be the first DC member to be nominated and awarded for acting. As you can see, I’m really rooting for her acting. You get her out there, her music will follow and will finally be appreciated.

    @MADAMXTINA
    WOW IS THAT REALLY TRUE?(the article) THATS REALLY MEAN AND JUST STRAIGHT UP SAD….smh

  16. kimberly August 4, 2011

    Everyone just picture Beyonce singing with a group and dancing. OH my can you imagine how much king bey will have to hold back? DC3 should give Columbia their last album a long time ago, or just pay them off for that album, a couple millions but that’s fine. dc3 will not reunite. sorry but it’s the truth… it’s hard to take as a dc3 fan but the power bey have on stage i wouldn’t want her to outshine nobody or hold back on her talent to fuel gossip again.

  17. jamir21: I STAN 4 THE BEEHIVE&THE NAVY !!!! August 4, 2011

    AINT NOBODY CHECKING FOR HER….
    KELLY AND BEYONCE >>>>>>>>>>>>> MICHELLE !!!!

  18. Dennis August 4, 2011

    She ain’t been a church girl for a while since she sold out to secular music. She shouldn’t be talking about no church after singing songs like solder

  19. Dev August 4, 2011

    She always looked as if she was destiny’s mum, too old to be looking like destiny’s child

  20. nice_gurl August 5, 2011

    I want her to do lots of R&B tracks. Her voice is made for R&B/gospel. Love that she’s developing her own career.

    @MICHELLEWFAN,

    Michelle may have a great voice and everything she she doesn’t have the “it” factor to become A MAINSTREAM POP STAR or R&B star…..

    Her voice is more suited for Gospel and theater…………..she ain’t no mainstream star and shall never be.

    S/N: You would expect a Michelle fan to be the least aggressive but this one here is PURE COMEDY……..

  24. lola August 5, 2011

    Sorry but Michelle is pathetic. What the hell has she been doing all of this time? Kelly has been in the game for so long and was recording music and getting #1 worlwide hits when she was dropped from her label and has finally come into her own, but Michelle is just nowhere to be found. I mean, maybe she just wanted to keep a low profile, but then again, her last album flopped hard as hell; it only sold 20,000 copies! I think that her voice is suited for gospel and adult contemporary R&B like J-Hud. It would be nice to see her get success, but I don’t think it’s ever going to happen.

  25. YOOSONDALOOSE August 5, 2011

    WOOO LOVE MICHELLE, the questions are good, excited for this!

    @kellymotivation :

    hey girl 😉 ! who’s in your avatar ?! she looks OMG !!! so fckin hot !

  27. Jonathan Gardner August 5, 2011

    Wow @ the shade.

    Everyone talking about her being underrated and such, have you invested in any of her albums?

    She has already recorded R&B and Adult Contemporary R&B/Neo-Soul on her first two Gospel albums while Unexpected was one the first dance-pop albums by an R&B artist.

    Since 2008, after topping the US dance charts with We Break the Dawn (which was also a top 50 hit here in the UK and top 40 in Hungary) and The Greatest (#39 on Billboard decade-end Dance chart), Michelle has been indulging in more theatre with the lead role of Roxie Hart in the play Chicago in both the prestigious European theatre central of the West End in London (where I met her twice in ’09) and also back in the US on Broadway. More recently she has played the lead female role in David E. Talbert’s new play What My Husband Doesn’t Know, soon to be released on DVD.

    Michelle has been working and getting that paper. “Divas getting money” as her bandmate Beyonce would sing.

    All Michelle’s albums have been great critical successes and well-recieved by her fans and that’s all that matters. Sure, a voice like her’s and with her writing ability (she co-wrote half of her first two albums), she deserves much greater commerical success, but maybe now she’s escaped the shadow of The Knowles she can achieve that.

  28. Bam Bam August 5, 2011

    Wasn’t Michelle like the first black woman to star in Chicago on the West End in London. #andyoucallheraflop. #GTFOH

  29. Kellymotivation August 5, 2011
