I think Whitney Houston should have been a consideration but she has had an even worse decline with her vocal ability. Also neither Mariah or Whitney have ever really been good at pulling off a decent level of choreography. MJB is known as the Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul because she’s given credit for introducing a Hip Hop flavor to soul and R&B music. I remember Brandy having a nice voice (haven’t seen her perform live in a long time so I don’t know about now) and I like quite a few of her songs and videos. BUT the bottom line is in my opinion Bey’s accomplishments have exceeded the R&B ladies of the past. She has taken it to another level and has become the very definition of R&B. I think she’s the most consistent performer at showing strength in each categories above. Therefore, she deserves the Queen of R&B crown in my opinion, hands down.

It’s the same with Beyonce having cross over success and recording music with obvious influence from other genres like Pop and Soft Rock but still being an R&B artist.

OK I admit it’s been fun reading some of the comments but honestly this list is a joke without Jazmine Sullivan, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu & Chrisette Michelle – four women who have stayed firmly in the r&b lane and aren’t trying to go “pop” (although I’m sure they’d love to crossover, they are not watering down their sound to do so).
As for the list, I agree with a previous comment that MJB, Mariah and imo, Toni Braxton shouldn’t be lumped on this list because they are icons and have catalogs & accomplishments that many others on this list will never achieve BUT since they are on the list, I factored that into my opinion.
Although stans have taken control of this poll and Bee leads in every category, as a music lover (particularly r&b music) I beg to differ on a few accounts:
VOCAL ABILITY: of the ladies on this list, the following >>>>>Bee: Brandy, JHud, Fantasia, Mariah (in her day), Melanie Fiona, Toni B & Monica.
LIVE PERFOMANCE SKILL: Beyonce is the only one who can put both elements of singing & dancing together however when I go to a show to hear a good vocal performance without pyrotechnics & 50 million dancers my money is on: MJB, AKeys, JHud & Monica. (Ciara can dance her a** off but cannot sing so well so I wouldn’t pay to see her live.)
CREATIVE INTEGRITY: Brandy, Mariah, MJB, Faith Evans, Keyshia Cole. This category to me means that the artist has a hand in guiding their project by writing lyrics and/or arranging the vocals & music without stealing or being accused of stealing others’ work. I did not even glance Bee’s way on this one, she’s been accused of theft too many times; and as much as I love AKeys – too many of her songs use uncredited samples and I don’t think that’s honest.
SONIC INNOVATION to me means that the artist created a sound that trended causing others to copy it so: MJB & Mariah top this category for me.
IMPACT ON POP CULTURE: Bee was white hot fr 2003 – 2009 so she had her run (just like JLo, Brittney, etc she was the “it” girl) but Brandy had her run as an “it” girl and Mariah & MJB are iconic so the jury is still out on Bee imo.
LONGEVITY: MJB, Brandy, Monica, Faith, Toni & Mariah are still doing their thing & ARE relevant to r&b music. Bee has had a 15-16 yr career but not as a solo artist however I’d still have to give her props in this category.
