No stranger to controversial statements (see: Christina Aguilera slam), sharp-tongued media mogul Simon Cowell will certainly have folks talking about his latest statements regarding two of today’s most celebrated pop starlets – Lady Gaga and Beyonce.
Clearly over-extending (or over-appreciating) his judging position on the hit talent show ‘X Factor’, the 51-year-old shared his thoughts with Mirror stating:
“If you only ever heard Lady GaGa, she’s the most boring singer in the world.”He continued: “You’ve got to see her – you need TV. Same with Beyoncé. Or Katy Perry. We’re all about image. You have to have that X Factor.”
The mogul’s roast didn’t end there. In reference to former American Idol co-star/presenter Ryan Seacrest, Cowell added:
“He’s [US X Factor’s presenter Steve Jones] tall, dark, British – he’s basically completely the opposite of Ryan Seacrest. You’ve got to add in intelligent as well.”

With countless snooze-fest acts like Susan Boyle, Leona Lewis, and Il Divo under his wing, who better than Simon’s expertise to point out ‘boring’? In all fairness, Cowell’s overall argument may hold some truth, given the overdose of generic sounds coming from our radios (and the importance placed on image and things indirectly related to music), maybe Gaga and Bey weren’t the best examples.
Then again, how much can one regard the opinion of a man who specifically requested ‘Man Down’ mannequin Rihanna be a guest judge on his talent show.

I think this might be a response to the fact that Leona had to push back her album. He is basically blaming these artist for selling their image and not only music. But Madonna was one of the first female artist who started to push her image more than the music. In the end of the day you can’t blame other artist for your singers lack of image success. I do agree though that Lady Gaga is all about the visual so that some times people do not remember the songs. Beyonce is a singer and an entertainer. You can listen and watch her. I don’t think she is boring except for her interviews that is.

It’s crazy that he feels that way about to of the most successful women in the industry considering the fact that American Idol & X Factor haven’t exactly produced the most ‘exciting’ performers over the years! There have been a number of very ‘boring’ contestants on American Idol, even some of the WINNERS! Jordin Sparks, Clay Aiken, Rubern Studdard to name a few and where are they now?!?! Susan Boyle & Leona may have had a lot of success & fame but they are FAR from ‘exciting’! SMH. In fact the only acts to come from AI that I can recall who were ‘exciting’ was that was that silver haired guy who won but never made it big & Adam Lambert. And again, where are they now?!?!
People who win on talent shows hardly EVER make it big and when they do it only last for a few years and then people just forget about them. Like where the hell is Kelly Clarkson?! So I don’t know why he is acting like AI & X Factor really look for some sort of extremely talented person who stands out so much better than the rest. I remember how he started favoring country artist as a judge on Idol once he saw that it was the one genre that was selling huge numbers(due to most of the audience not being bootleggers). No matter how untalented they were he was very easy on them. I actually prefer Idol without him. I’m tired of him using shock tactics (such as this stunt he’s pulling with Bey and Gaga) to gain him any attention. He’s a big phony on X-factor , this Mr. nice guy act is his attempt at being more likeable (now that the Idol judges managed to still be a hit without being nasty). Simon should not be making a call on who is boring in the industry after introducing Leona to the world. She is the biggest square in the industry. I really hope this guy gets put in his place one day.

…yeah I can actually agree with the ORIGINAL quote, some singers do need the extra visual. Gaga’s got a great voice but she didn’t get her career by being ordinary and the majority of her publicity is about the way she looks, not the way she sounds.
We’re all very visual these days and if you only listen to an album you don’t really hear anything earth shattering anymore. I didn’t even really realize folks were stanning that hard for Beyonce, Katy Perry, and the like. Ironically I think some of the current strongest voices come from overseas.
Jessie J, Amy Winehouse, Adele. Jessie’s killing it with a broken leg and Adele has been scalping b****’s. We DON’T currently have girls doing it like that here in the states. The title of your post implies that Simon insulted these ladies, but any one who is literate and able to process a complete thought (which knocks out half of the people who comment on this blog) should be able to see upon reading Simon’s comment, that he was simply saying, the X-factor is about packaging. The music industry is an image oriented industry (especially when you’re a Pop act). He mentioned three of the biggest pop acts in the game right now to emphasize his point, which was (is), in today’s musical climate (the genre that is Pop), you have to be more than a decent singer because that all by itself is boring. You must have the entire package; marketability, gimmicks, commercial viability, a brand, etc. Which Beyonce and GaGa both have. However, “If you only EVER heard them sing”, meaning you never saw a live showing from Beyonce or a wacky outfit from GaGa or a cute and/or colorful video from Katy Perry, ALL of the mentioned artists would get real old real quick. They’d eventually lose their steam and become “boring”. Simon was simply saying that artists need the visual (T.V) in order to truly capture an audience broad enough to make them the type of stars that GaGa, Beyonce, Rihanna, and Katy Perry have become.
Mind you, this is ONLY true of POP stars. REAL artists, REAL vocalists, REAL talents, can stand on their own and make music that is well received and commercially successful without all of the media blitz; just ask acts such as Adele, Jill Scott, Marcia Ambrosious, Jaheim, Anthony David and yes, Susan Boyle (how soon we forget how many records that woman sold); and there are MANY more acts that this can be said about. The moment i heard “Crazy In Love” with the 808’s, horns, lyrics, her singing, i was completely SOLD! I didn’t need to see how she danced, what she wore, the set, etc…It was all about the music. As for Bey she has proven herself, she doesnt need sp. effects to put on a show. 4 intimate nights was just her and her band no pyro, no wowin stage nothin and if u dont bliv the feedback from fans read the reviews. no i do not need visual to appreciate a song, visual helps me to appreciate it more. End of time is my fav Beyonce song ever the music on I AM side is better by many’s opinion than Sasha Fierce’s and they didnt need visuals either, it has no music video. these days people like Rihanna and Lady Gaga can get top ten hits without a single live performance or music video to boost the single. its only in UK where the video is out for weeks before the song is actually released

This is why I love Simon. He’s very intelligent and knows the music business well! I think that Beyonce is most definitely not one of the best singers ever, but compared to all of the other singers who just simply cannot sing or have weak voices, she’s amazing. Lady Gaga is a GENERIC SINGER! WTF at her stans who think she has a great voice. Even Randy Jackson gave her a 7 on a scale of 1-10. Both of them wouldn’t be as famous as they are without excessive promotion and image, especially Beyonce. She has to appear pretty with fake blonde wigs, contacts, makeup, and can never get fat.
