From The Vault: Lady GaGa – ‘LoveGame’

Sometimes it’s hard to believe that chart-Queen Lady GaGa‘s big break only occured in 2008. Indeed, that time to now has seen the Pop force create a lane of her own and become a pioneer – doing in three years what many of her peers have tried their whole careers to achieve. So speedy has her musical and physical evolution been that it genuinely feels like she’s been here forever. As such, her ‘Just Dance’ days now seem many moons old.

This week’s From The Vault takes aim with GaGa of yesteryear and her ‘LoveGame’ – the third single (or fourth depending on your region) to be lifted from her first opus, ‘The Fame’.

The RedOne helmed tune is a gritty number exploring themes such as love, sex and of course fame. While it possesses all the ingredients to a Pop-record, what’s interesting about the cut is how seamlessly it fuses those sensibilities with a particular Urban edge. That Hip-Hop/R&B undercurrent which was ever present throughout the ‘The Fame’ era; an undercurrent which seems to be long gone judging from the ‘Judas’ singer most recent material. Rather unfortunate, we must say.

The accompanying visual is a high-energy dance video and showcases Stefani and her dancers going all out in a subway station and was really the first of many dance-oriented videos she would go on deliver. While GaGa has always cited Michael and Janet Jackson as some of her influences, the LoveGame video demonstrates just how much, for it has a strong air of “Jackson” to it.

With the “Born This Way” singer experiencing critical acclaim and commercial success with her latest Electro-Pop output, we won’t hold our breath waiting for an “Urban-GaGa” resurgence anytime soon.

No matter the kind of music she’s churning out, let’s hope GaGa can continue to raise the bar for artists the world pver and inspire them to push the enveloppe musically and visually… that is of course if her rapid rise to fame doesn’t result in an even quicker fall, because you know what they say: “the brightest stars burn out the fastest”.

Only time will tell…

Your thoughts?

    umm what the hell are you on?? Katy Perry aint gotta dancing bone in her body and she could pull off those basic moves. GaGa is multitalented; she can sing, write songs, produce, play the piano, and perform, but this chick is not a dancer

    ‘gritty’? My ass, just because it wasn’t her singing about nonsense doesn’t mean it wasn’t pure 100% pop.

    That’s the Gaga I used to love.

    Not the monstrosity that exists now. Sigh…the good ol days.

    Remember y’all,I THINK He posted Gimme More by Britney Spears (which also isn’t that old) as one of his “From the Vaults” as well,”Starstruck” and “Paper Gangsta” were much more “urban” than this and this was a hit from ’09…..

  • I can understand why some people prefer her first days in music: easy music. But Born This Way is definitely better in every possible way. Huge development in a short time. I´m of course talking about MUSIC. People who don´t know what that is obviuosly prefer easy dance music (and this is not me having a go at the Fame cos it was a good pop-dance record, not a crap dance record like the rest of artists did after seeing her succes. But still BTW is so much better. More rock, more musicianship showing, a big step

    @ISTANN4GAGA I remember him posting the leaked supposed-to-be original ‘Gimme More’ video but not posting it on ‘From The Vault’.And ‘LoveGame’ was released in 2008 as a song, so, regardless of the fact that its single release was in 2009, it is still a 2008 song :cool:

    Yes Paper Gangsta is decidedly more urban, as is Teeth IMO. Love Game…not so much.

    @John Vidal

    While I understand the evolution and growth I can’t really say BTW shows more musicianship than Bad Romance or Alejandro. Her early stuff was easy pop, yes, but it’s really Gaga’s care free attitude or sense of youth I miss the most. It is what Rihanna and Katy Perry, for their flaws, have learned to master. Songs that put a smile on people’s face and share an experience with them. Edge of Glory and You and I have her test the waters in slightly different genres but I think she was doing that even on The Fame and Fame Monster with less fanfare.

    [Reply]

  • She continues to evolved with her music. You really cant put her
    into a specific genre. Lady GAGA has also recorded a classical Jazz type
    song, all of her music is written, produced&perfomed by her.

  • Oh! I miss this. I remember listening to Lady Gaga when she didn’t even had a top 50 hit and almost no one knew about it. But I really fell in love after watching her performing Just Dance on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’. That was good. She looked and sounded different from everything (on the mainstream), she was unique and special.
    Everything was special until she started to wear those ‘fashion’ (aka ugly) outfits. In the begining it was cool, but now she looks totally a fool. My interesest for her ended when she released ‘Born This Way’. I really loved The Fame and Monster, they were one of the best pop albums of the last decade, but BTW is terrible! She hyped it so much, saying it would be an anthem and the song of our generation, but it ended up being a mediocre rip-off of Madonna’s Express Youself. BTW (album) isn’t that good either, it’s just okay.
    There’s a lot that what I want to say about her, but my comment is getting really big, so I’m stopping here.

    no I don’t HATE HER ! I was a fan before even you ! I am a fan since her RED AND BLUE CD ! i was play her ” THE FAME ” album even before “Just dance” was popular ! Her old fans like me will understand what I feel ! And it’s far from hate ! I call it DISLIKENESS ! I liked her when she was funny and youthful ! Now I don’t see the gaga I loved ! I see another person ! and I’m over her crazy outfits and shit ! If u liked/was familiar with stefani and 2008′s gaga u will understand me !

    That last part was in general,It wasn’t directed to anyone in particular….

    and while I agree about Teeth,I Disagree about SHICD,I fist heard just dance in November of 2008 so i’ve seen some of her old stuff on Youtube (Captivated/Electric Kiss,Poker Face Acoustic,Wonerful, etc.) so I could see where you are coming from…a lot of people have been turned off during or after TFM era tbh…..

    @ISTAN4GAGA :

    I really LOVE GAGA ! maybe her personality was the first thing that attracted me to her ” if u have the red and blue cd u will understand ” after that was her talent that made me like her even more ! she was really cool and out-going and all ! and the fame era made me love her even more ! but when she released ” BAD romance” in particular ! I was afraid that the fame killed the funny , crazy-but – enjoyable gaga ! But I really enjoyed the fame monster era till Alejandro ! after that , the gaga I loved was dead and gone ! The funny stefani I loved isn’t here anymore and I have other person ! A more dramatic and serious gaga ! and I felt horrible watching that BTW vid ! I was S A D ! like really ! I was like : really stefani , really ?!

    and her supporting the gays has nothing to do with anything , if u will have this thought in your mind ! I’m open minded enough to separate my love for music and the artist sexual orientation ! So ……

    I hope u see that I don’t hate her but I really want to see the girl I once liked ! the gaga I’m having now is not the person I liked ! She’s NOT !
    And I’m PAUSING my relationship with the person we are having now till I see the funny , drama-free gaga again …

    If anything,I just want Gaga to rest…for her health’s sake.If not,She’s going to be really tired and Everyone else is going to get tired of her….I know everyone misses the old fun pop Gaga but there’s a chance she could change this dark, religious side top her….

    Yes ! She even looks tired everytime I see her !

    she need a break for HERSELF ! like really ! I love her ! but sometimes I feel she’s afraid ppl forget about her if she took one !

    But she need to come and visit my country , ppl here wearing her ” BTW” t-shirts and walking everywhere ! Ppl love her regardless of her crazy dark persona she’s having now ! but she need a break ! her and Rihanna need a break ! Rihanna also looked so tired in her latest stuffs !
    and ppl are SUPERSATURATED with her craziness ! like it was fun at first ! and she looked unique and special to everyone ! But ppl like nicki minaj also made it to be so silly Nowadays ! So gaga really need to be UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT THAN EVERYONE AGAIN ! and this will happen when she take a real break and get inspired by new stuffs :)

    Mmmm I don’t think teeth is urban. Only somewhat urban song I heard from gaga is Starstruck from her freshman album. The beat was kinda hiphop. But lovegame seems more pop-ish to me with maybe some urban influences but not rly. Majority of her music sounds dance and electro-ish.
