Mya: Product vs Promotion

The 90s R&B teen scene was already well occupied by the Brandys and Monicas of the world by the time then-18-year-old Mya came into play.  Sporting a soft soprano and street savvy dance moves, fans were introduced to what looked like Aaliyah’s distant R&B cousin.  However, time would prove Ms. Harrison to be more than a spinoff.

With her debut single boldly professing ‘It’s All About Me’ with fellow diva-in-training Sisqo, Mya blasted onto charts with a slew of R&B top 10 hits.  Then after her 2000 sophomore smash ‘Fear Of Flying’ soared up charts and yielded her signature #1 hit ‘Case of the Ex’, the ‘Movin’ On’ songbird was quickly moving into becoming a formidable force across multiple genre tallies – still following Aaliyah’s archetype of harmonizing with hip hop hitmakers (see: Jay Z, Jadakiss).  But, it would be her enlistment on 2001’s remake of ‘Lady Marmalade’ featuring then-rising Pop starlets Christina Aguilera, Pink and Rap queen Lil’ Kim that cemented the R&B star’s view on the Pop telescope.

And while the song’s tenure on charts did raise ‘Mya awareness’ in other arenas, it ushered in a dilemma as well.  Could she follow-up the joint effort with her own solo success?  The subsequent ‘Mizzaundastood’ and ‘Stripped’ eras of Pink and Christina‘s respective careers may have lifted them to new heights, but Mya’s ‘MoodRing’ failed to strike a similar chord with fans.  Its respectable chart entry and ‘My Love Is Like Whoa’ intro set it on the ground running initially, but just a few weeks later it had ‘fallen’ off charts faster than its second single – struggling to secure Gold status.

After a brief hiatus, the songstress returned with the Lil’ Wayne-assisted ‘Lock U Down’ from her fourth album ‘Liberation’ – which freely fell into obscurity.  This Japan-only release, followed by other albums of similar suiting, all indicated that Mya had lost her footing on US Pop charts.

So what’s the problem? Her sheer talent has kept her in mention with today’s top Urban divas, while movie and talent show appearances have, to some degree, kept her ‘celebrity’ alive.  But what we want to know is: were her previous chart shortcomings marketing mishaps or musical missteps?

You weigh in.  Product vs. promotion:  Have we seen the best of the ‘Best of Me’ songstress?  Or will the right product and/or promotion bring Mya back?

Your thoughts?

Mya is really dat B**** that could really come back harder then any of these R&B chicks. I mosdef put my money on Mya b4 I put my s*** on Solange, Ciara and even Cassie.

Mya got swagg Sass and she can sing and dance.

The problem is that most f**** just wana c Beyonce and no one else.

Mya can def kill the game if she really wanted to.

  2. Angie October 14, 2011

Ya’ll love to post on how to resurrect someone’s career lol. I have always liked Mya, but I think it’s pretty much over for her. She reached her peak with Lady Marmalade.

Beyonce is her problem.Beyonce killed err’body career ..poor thang

*lemme read and comment more seriously* 😉

  4. The-Truth October 14, 2011

I totally think Mya has the ability to make a come back, What Mya needs to realize is that there is a Still a Lane for her. Keri Hilson is currently doing the music that Mya should be doing. Keri Hilson is filling her void, but Mya would do it much better.

Mya, Ashanti, Tweet, Brandy , Monica and any black singer born circa 1980-1981:

PRODUCT vs PROMOTION ? Neither one nor the other.

    The answer is : BEYONCE !!! .

Beyonce killed all those girls with one single shot : “Crazy in love”.

ever heard if Aaliyah… do you know rock da boat ? what about four page letter…
its very unfair to compare Aaliyah and Beyonce. .. Aaliyah was a very kind and loving person with a very Angelic vocal/ voice I will never gv up all the love I had for Aaliyah..
Beyonce is great at what she’s doing but she’ll never be Aaliyah.. cause she was a one in a million

  6. El Rey October 14, 2011

I really don’t know what went wrong with her career. MoodRing, I thought, was a pretty good album and My Love Is Like Whoa… was a great song. I do feel that if she came back and worked with some really great producers and some really hot songwriters, she could make a huge comeback.

“with fellow diva-in-training Sisqo” DEAD! lol

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. Anyone can get a hit. It just takes the right song at the right moment. Mya has talent and beauty but other than that she is indistinguishable from the rest of the R&B field. That AND R&B isn’t really a mainstream sound at the moment.

  8. Imgunnacheckuboo October 14, 2011

Y’all need to stop blaming Bey for these girls. True she has been Head, shoulders, knees and toes above them since her solo debut but she didn’t start out where they did.

Destiny’s child was a mainstream pop group. Bey benefited greatly from that. Mya, Monica, Ashanti and whoever else had to start out from a place of having to breakthrough to the mainstream. Bey started there.

The product was her main problem. Her music was great urban pop with hit potential in all formats, so it seems perfect, but for some reason both her music and her visuals fell short compared to Aaliyah and Destiny’s Child.Mya didn’t have a lane. It’s no coincidence that she found success while Aaliyah was taking a break 😉 She just didn’t stand out enough. And of course ‘Moodring’ was not a commercial album and I respect her for that but it was a huge step after just 2 semi-successful albums that didn’t work for her.

She took some bad decisions (the extended breaks, leaving Interscope just a few months before releasing her 4th album with them, throwing away the recorded tracks and going back to the drawing board completely etc etc), but her product and the way that the label launched her was the main problem. She was overshadowed by so many other female artists…

I like Mya and I wish her luck in her comeback 😎

I think Mya could make a serious splash back into the Top 40 charts, however she needs the right label, the right promotion, and a honest group of people who realize her talent and are willing to put in the time and money. Seriously, a talent like Mya’s shouldn’t go unrecognized.

  12. Bookem October 14, 2011

mya is not a grinder like beyonce is. she took a long break from music. what did that get her nothing. she didnt even get married or have kids during that long break. so what was the purpose of it. Thats on her nobody else. people just forgot about her and left her in the 90’s and early 2000’s while new pop artist like Rihanna ciara beyonce took her place. Now the only thing that can save and bring her back is reality tv

  13. swagg October 14, 2011

mya was hot in the late 90s i think if she followed up that failed album with another somewhere around 05 she would prob be ok and dropping hits in the u.s if the follow up was a success…but saying B came and crushed everybody is false lol she successful but really her solo career hasnt out did anybody she is just hot now and has been for a while back when she first came out it was still multi platinum rnb chicks droppin albums ciara ashanti hell mariah even came back in 05 with a 5* plat album crushing all beyonces albums to date so calmn down stans around 09 thats when rnb started to simmer down and even ppl like b and chris is strugglin to go platinum

  14. VA STAND UP!!! October 14, 2011

I’m gonna have to go with neither. I like Mya, she used to be my girl back in the day but I think it’s safe to say that she was just one of those 90’s artist who was hot back in the day and now their time is up! She had the s** appeal (still does really) a decent voice and could dance her b*** off, but I really do think she was a fad who didn’t have staying power. She may have had a number of hits under her belt but she was never really that big a star to begin with, she was more of a urban star. She is the type of artist who could easily get replaced by the next hot lil female r&b singer and she has over and over again.

I know she has been doing her mixtape thing for a while and I have actually liked a few of the records I’ve heard, but I don’t really think it is enough to get her back in the forefront. There is just too much competition out there for her to compete with. Even if she does churn out a massive hit, it’s no gurantee that that will be enough to get her a spot on the pop scene. I mean hell, even working with Wayne couldn’t get her a hit! I just don’t think people have any interest in her anymore.

I mean look at Kelly Rowland, she had a HUGE hit with ‘Motivation’ and her album still flopped hard. Even if Mya gets a hit on her hands it probably won’t get her album sales, maybe a platinum single but that’s about it. Honestly, she might want to keep her focus on the Japanese market. I remember an interview where she said she gets $6 for every unit sold over in Japan. At least that way she can keep making music and have some sort of success. She would never get a deal that good in the US market.

She has an impressive resume though, she has platinum albums under her belt, won a Grammy and even got to perform with Micheal Jackson. She’s left her mark but I do think her time is up.

S/N: I always thought her and Aaliyah were kinda similar, but Aaliyah was my favorite.

  15. Steffon October 14, 2011

This post is flopping just like her career. Its over for her. She will do wonderful on Broadway tho

  16. supaman October 14, 2011

Mya is talented, but in the 90’s she was just a cheaper version of Aaliyah. We didn’t need Mya because we had Aaliyah at that time. When Aaliyah died, Mya should have stepped up and been on the grind to fill the void that Aaliyah left. But she was lazy, and Ciara took that spot. And now, Ciara is flopping like hot cakes. I’d rather see Mya be sucessful than Ciara.

    ALL OF THIS!!

I get so sick of people blaming Beyonce for the failure of other artist! SMFH! It’s not Bey’s fault that she outshines all there lessors. I mean, WTF is she supposed to do, not perform to the best of her abilities just so other female artist can get some shine?! I don’t think so!!

  18. Theman October 14, 2011

Mya is good. She’s humble and she has some talent. The thing is that her presence i s kinda quiet. She’s lowkeye. She’s the kinda artists that needs hits, press, promo. Radio just wasn’t responding to her material. She had some good songs that were scrapped. I would like to see her have another successful album. Beyonce isn’t the cause of anything.

  19. Mike October 14, 2011

I wouldn’t say her time is up. Case in point, any of these artist that try to come back with these cheeky midtempos need to realize that not even Mary J. Blige or Monica can ride off of mid-tempos…

Amerie, Mya, Nivea, etc. will never see another hit unless it a killer slow jam, club-banger or…..an actual song with good lyrical content “when I find you, Imma lock u down, lock u down” ain’t gonna cut it.

Ridin’ was the type of song Mya should be doing, but the lyrics were awful: “I been sippin on Red Bull so there ain’t gon be no sleep tonight” :CHANGE RADIO STATION:

She needs to call up Missy Elliot and tell can she take Jasmine Sullivan’s spot now.

  20. Stacey October 14, 2011

Mya you can dance yo’ ass off, but you dont have to show yo ass off. Please put some clothes on This is a very unflattering picture. Women need to have more respect for themselves. I would never let just any ol’ body see this body (meaning my body) Its banging, I’m in shape, but I keep my self covered. You must be a very very very special person to see all this. More women need to feel that way about themselves.

  21. …baa, where is my purse melisa? October 14, 2011

    “with fellow diva-in-training Sisqo,” <—– @SAM, I AM MAD AT YOU FOR THIS….LMAO! 🙂

Now on to Mya. Mia is truly a talented young lady. She is attractive, has a nice vocal range, and can actually dance (she should have won the DWTS competition; She as ROBBED)! She is in the same fix that Jaz Sullivan, and a few others are in! The rigged and very controlled media/music industry has no interest in promoting R&B artists. It's sad that black ppl have allowed others to highjack the soul music scene and literally put it to rest (see the Jazz genre for details). Blacks don't own their own music outlets therefore their artists have nowhere to showcase their talents. When the most popular SOUL SINGER on today's music scene is ADELE, there really is a serious problem! ….. Nothing against Adele who I like!

^^ @ASAP Ch… Thank you they will never learn

And I’m sorry but Mya is BASIC.. She is talented and all that but she just does not have the x-factor. Some artist will have one god era then everything goes down hill. Case Of The Ex was my jam doe.

  23. perhaps October 14, 2011

I was just thinking about this the other day, what if mya was still in the game? I don’t know what happen.

I bought Moodring and it was not her best album Ill say that. “My Love is like whoa” was a good effort and the video was even better. I really don’t know what went wrong, you can’t put my finger on it. It would be easy to simply say her time was up.

I think that she was too laid back with material that was not strong enough. They didn’t even push moodring and its didn’t have hits like fear of flying. Its a lil bit of product and promo that was lacking. I would love to see mya make a comeback I really really would but her effort would have to come full throttle with a slew of hits and hot videos. She needs a team to help her. This girl can dance her ass off, and she has a special style and sass about her. I really miss her presence. I think she could make it happen again.

  24. S*** (U MAD?) October 14, 2011

  25. Fabio October 14, 2011

Some of you have made valid points, but Mya is doing fine, she has her own label which is a start-up but she has already gained a lot of momentum since its inception, she has had a few no.1s in Japan she is getting great returns and what that has shown is there is a need for different music and variety of artist not being bombarded by the same people I bet if Mya released a CD in the U.K it would also do well its only in America where people are stifled due to bureaucracy and industry politics but THANK G_D for the internet.

  26. wehavetoagree October 14, 2011

Beyonce is so of the cause of the destruction of these artist. Beyonce had the blacks, whites, Asians and Hispanics jamming to her music. Until then people like Mya, Brandy, and Monica never reached that much fan power. Out of every artist I know Beyonce has the best and most supportive fans. Like come look at 4. People said they hated it but some how it manage to stay in the top twenty for almost three months. Beyonce fans go all out for her like fans should and thats why people like Mya couldn’t make it…They have no fan base. It tru it’s not based on talent it’s based on your fan base. Come on look at what people have been ruling the charts for years now. Beyonce and her stans, Rihanna and her navy, and Gaga and her monsters.

  27. TRICKorTREAT? October 14, 2011

Well, the answer is given. About two people gave the answer.

And anyway, how can Mya stand out when she usually look so timid.

She is a pretty girl, but that look dont have her standing out but standing back. Back enough to have a seat.

She could however just turn around in that shot. If she just turn around and looK back at us . . . BBBOOOOOMMM!!!!

  28. commanderofthedancefloor October 14, 2011

no shade to anyone but i noticed that there really isn’t any artist who was at the top and then fell off, and was able to make a comeback, except for mariah carey. but really there is no one who has successful revived their career to what it used to be. again no shade to mya or anyone else.

  31. Ernestine October 14, 2011

    1. Beyonce didn’t kill anyone career! Her album sales is barely groundbreaking..Look it up! She isn’t even selling more albums than Alicia Keys…

    2. Mya although she has alot of talent, she doesn’t have the ” it” factor and right sound behind her that will hold a huge fan base in the long term. Alot of urban artist goes through it. The people who bought her music in the late 90s and 00 grew up!

  32. Clark Smith October 14, 2011

@WEHAVETOAGREE Actually, Beyonce got some of the best reviews of her career from 4. 4’s reviews were nearly universally positive. I can’t name one group (of professional critics) other than the Washington Post that didn’t say that 4 was her most mature, diverse and well put-together album to date.

I will admit however that people hated Run The World.

  33. Clark Smith October 14, 2011

@ERNESTINE Beyonce has killed numerous careers. Its called ‘Beyonceitis’ – the utter destruction of one’s career by Beyonce’s overwhelming popularity.
    EXAMPLE

    Ashanti:
We lost Aaliyah and Left Eye had died tragically. Ashanti had just enough look and voice to fill the void. Ashanti was POPPIN! Then Beyonce released her debut album ‘Dangerously in Love’ whiched spawned two #1 hits. Every album from Ashanti flopped thereafter.

    Amerie:
Following the release of her well-polished and well-produced 1st album, Amerie seemed on track to be…something, although we are not sure what. After she caught Beyonceitis, it became more obvious that Amerie was little more than a mediocre voice, good hair, and nice legs meant to help sell a hot beatmaker (The Vanity to Rich Harrison”s Prince) Her 2nd album was lead by the single “One Thing” and that “one thing” was the only thing the general public cared about from that album. The album sank quicky without a strong follow-up single.

    Brandy/Monica:
Although Brandy and Monica duked it out on “The Boy Is Mine” over the title of hottest chick in the game, Beyonce exploded on the scene and Three Stooges-slapped both of them. Although Monica was regarded as one of the best vocalists of her generation, and that raspy thing that Brandy did was kinda cute from 1995 to mid-1998, the average person would not pay $100 to see either of them in concert, and when you are known JUST for singing and not for having any kind of stage presence it is important that all of your albums are on point and properly promoted with STRONG singles. Unfortunately for these two, Beyonceitis has sidetracked both of their careers. While Beyonce was at the top of the charts Brandy”s album Afrodisiac, although slightly acclaimed, flopped. She later became a judge on one of those American Idol-ish shows that I never watched and on December 30, 2006 she proved that sometimes Beyonceitis makes your foot heavy. (car accident)

    Christina Aguilera
Christina caught a bad case of Beyonceitis on August 28, 2003 at the MTV Video Music Awards. Even after kissing Madonna Beyonce still won all the attention with yet another show-stopping performance. Adding insult to injury Christina won no awards that night (while Beyonce won 3) MTV”s cameras didn”t show her kiss with Madonna, and Beyonce won the crowd over her raw live performance (instead of a girl-on-girl kiss). Out of jealousy Christina critiziced Beyonce in Blender magazine, and months later Christina suffered a relapse of Beyonceitis when her performance at the Grammys went virtually ignored while Beyonce became the first artist to perform on the Grammystwice in one night. Then took home 5 awards, solidifying herself as the queen of the music industry.

Overall, despite the fact the Christina has gone out of her way to be cutting-edge and provocative, Beyonceitis has caused the general public to ignore much of what Christina does. Her latest album “Back to Basics” did the electric slide down the charts in the U.S. while Beyonce”s “B-Day” remained in the Top 10 for months. Her marriage to Joe Whatchamacallit (I honestly don”t know his name)was ignored by the press, however everytime Beyonce and Jay make a trip to Roscoe”s Chicken and Waffles it makes the front page of the newspaper.

    Janet Jackson
In the fall of 2003 producers for the Super Bowl halftime show contacted Beyonce to be a part of the halftime show. Beyonce decided that since she had already clapped her asscheeks on MTV and BET, it was now time to be classy, and show people that she could sing, so she decided to sing the National Anthem. Producers then offered the halftime show to Janet Jackson. Midway through rehearsing the halftime show it occurred to Janet that this would be the most important performace of her career and she would need to do something memorable similar to what Beyonce had did on the MTV and BET awards. Since Janet couldn”t sing live to save her life she knew her vocals would not be the highlight, and since she was doing the same dance steps she had been doing for the past 16 years she knew that even her trademark dancing would not save her performance. She needed a quick, cheap gimmick to grab people”s attention. She decied to bare her breast. Of course the plan backfired, and Beyonceitis struck Janet — right in the titty. Janet”s first post-Beyonceitis album, “Damita Jo” was suspiciously more urban than her previous one, and it flopped.

Two years later she made another album which was promoted as her big comeback album and return to her dance roots. Her man-troll of a boyfriend Jermaine Dupri stated “I don”t know where Beyonce will be in 20 years.” Although no one knows for sure where Beyonce will end up in 20 years, his girlfriend”s album fell off the charts in less than 20 days.

With 2 back-to-back flops, Janet has but one strike left before she”s officially irrelevant. With age and severe vocal limitations as major obstacles, Janet will never be able to return to heyday as the multimedia “it” girl, but she still has a very loyal legion of fans that will pay top-dollar to watch her lip-synch songs from 20 years ago, so touring seems to her best option (Tina Turner and Cher sold out arenas and stadiums well into their 50”s and 60”s)

    Ciara:
Ciara’s third album was dragge across the internet for flopping like a pancake. When she released its first single, Beyonce released Single Ladies. It was all downhill from there.

    Beyonceitis is deadly….

  34. nice_gurl October 14, 2011

Promotion. The product is excellent, but the promotion is shocking. But TGJ can u please stop with these useless posts?

  35. STR8FACTS October 14, 2011

Mya is cute. She has cute vocals, presence, and can dance, but like everyone always says, that just isn’t going to fly in today’s day. You have to have something else to keep your audience interested, you can’t attract your audience in and then file your nails, but cry when your unsuccessful which I believe is what a lot of these artists do nowadays but whatever.

In all honesty, I always thought the only reason Mya was anything was because at the beginning of her career she released music that fit extremely well with what was “in” at the time. Circa 98′ she was down with Sisqo or whatever and we all know how popular Dru Hill was back in the 90’s. Circa 2000 she had quite a few good singles and she had those remixes with Beenie Man and Jay-Z which kept her both around mainstream and urban popularity. She completely fell off after that. I didn’t listen to Moodring but the songs I did hear from it, prooved it DESERVED to flop. “Whatever B****” really? Mya slap yourself for that.

She released an album earlier this year entitled K.I.S.S. in some other country that I did hear and I liked some of the songs on it. I won’t like the album has substance and one or two of the songs could definitely hit urban radio and get her a little bit of buzz but her team definitely shouldn’t release it as an album, they are setting themselves up for failure. I bet 95% of you don’t even know Mya released a single earlier this year called “Fabulous Life”. BTW the K.I.S.S. album has SUUCHHHH a Keri Hilson undertone it’s ridiculous. There is a song on there that sounds like a cheap version of ‘Pretty Girl Rock’, and the cover!! lol it’s really a shame.

Idk what Mya needs. Maybe she just needs to be herself and stop trying to follow in other females footsteps (i.e. Aaliyah, Keri Hilson). It might have worked for her back in 98′-00′ when Aaliyah took a break, but not in today’s day. If your putting out b******* people will be able to tell, and they will dragg your ass. If she wants to keep being mediocre she needs to be prepared to be non existent in the industry for the rest of her life *kanye shrug*

  36. Mari (RIP Dwayne McDuffie + Amy Winehouse +Steve Jobs) October 14, 2011

    @Clark and Ernestine

Beyonce has nothing to do with why Bionic flopped. So, let’s not.

    ______________________________________________________

“no shade to anyone but i noticed that there really isn’t any artist who was at the top and then fell off, and was able to make a comeback, except for mariah carey.”

    @Commander

I think Monica is the exception to that rule. Her last album did very welll. Mya might want to do what Monica did and try to parlay a reality show into record industry success.

Personally I agree with others who suggested that Mya is even more basic than Ashanti, because although both artists weren’t tremendous vocalists, at least Ashanti could always fall back on her song writing skills.

Plus there’s also the Beyonce test because, as far as light skinned, weaved out R&B chicks go, they’ll always be compared to her.

  37. Theman October 15, 2011

Clark Smith that Beyonceitis lis is full of sh*t and so are u. If thats the case Mrs.Beyonce has caught that Beyonceitis as well. Janet and Christina have sold way more albums than her. Ashanti had another double platinum and platinum album after her first one. Where are you getting this nonsense from. Ciara’s album sales have nothing to do with Beyonce’s. “Da Mita Jo” also went platinum which is not a flop. Get your statistics together. That Beyonceitis stuff is played, considering her current album/single sales you should know better.

  38. Theman October 15, 2011

Monica is consistent and doesn’t belong on this bogus list. Her last album/singles have done well.

After she caught Beyonceitis, it became more obvious that Amerie was little more than a mediocre voice, good hair, and nice legs meant to help sell a hot beatmaker (The Vanity to Rich Harrison’’s Prince) Her 2nd album was lead by the single “One Thing” and that “one thing” was the only thing the general public cared about from that album.

While Beyonce was at the top of the charts Brandy’’s album Afrodisiac, although slightly acclaimed, flopped.

Adding insult to injury Christina won no awards that night (while Beyonce won 3) MTV’’s cameras didn”t show her kiss with Madonna, and Beyonce won the crowd over her raw live performance (instead of a girl-on-girl kiss).

Her latest album “Back to Basics” did the electric slide down the charts in the U.S. while Beyonce’’s “B-Day” remained in the Top 10 for months. Her marriage to Joe Whatchamacallit (I honestly don”t know his name)was ignored by the press, however everytime Beyonce and Jay make a trip to Roscoe’’s Chicken and Waffles it makes the front page of the newspaper.

She needed a quick, cheap gimmick to grab people’’s attention. She decied to bare her breast. Of course the plan backfired, and Beyonceitis struck Janet — right in the titty. Janet’’s first post-Beyonceitis album, “Damita Jo” was suspiciously more urban than her previous one, and it flopped.

Two years later she made another album which was promoted as her big comeback album and return to her dance roots. Her man-troll of a boyfriend Jermaine Dupri stated “I don”t know where Beyonce will be in 20 years.” Although no one knows for sure where Beyonce will end up in 20 years, his girlfriend’’s album fell off the charts in less than 20 days.

With 2 back-to-back flops, Janet has but one strike left before she’’s officially irrelevant. With age and severe vocal limitations as major obstacles, Janet will never be able to return to heyday as the multimedia “it” girl, but she still has a very loyal legion of fans that will pay top-dollar to watch her lip-synch songs from 20 years ago, so touring seems to her best option (Tina Turner and Cher sold out arenas and stadiums well into their 50′’s and 60′’s)

    Ciara:
Ciara’s third album was dragge across the internet for flopping like a pancake. When she released its first single, Beyonce released Single Ladies. It was all downhill from there.

    Beyonceitis is deadly….

    THIS !!!!!
But I disagree with one thing :

Beyonceitis is not deadly , proof : RIHANNA ! she wasn’t infected with beyoncitis !!
Rihanna infected BEYONCE with RIHOpecia ! That’s why BEYONCE wears weaves 😆

More product than promotion. Mya never followed up hard to Case of the Ex, except for Lady Marmalade, which was a group single.

I don’t think Beyonce matters here. Mya has to figure out what works for her. Monica is a good example of what Mya needs to do to get back out there. Ultimately, Mya has got to come up with a hot single that will kill at radio.

  42. SimpleGuy October 15, 2011

She is very talented. I think she is lack of promo and hasn’t choose the right single of Moodring and Liberation.. I’m sure if she choose a strong song to be the 2nd single of Moodring and do a good promo that it can went platinum.. Ayo, Lock U Down are OK.. But it is not very suitable to become a single..

K.I.S.S. is OK, it’s like pretty girl rock cause that two songs have a same producer Chuck Harmony.

Anyway, I want to see her to have a successful comeback. Mya please release a single in U.S.!!! Can’t wait to hear the U.S. version of K.I.S.S. and 8th studio album.

  43. IWillRead October 15, 2011

Noone is checking for her, there is a difference between being a gemick and just plain interesting and exciting and Mya doesn’t have that. I used to be a fan but it has gotten old. Thats why Ms.Alicia Keys, Mary J,Ciara,Keri Hilson,Brandy, ect are FLOPPING. nobody is trying to hear about you sing about LOVE, and how he did you wrong and you want him back, ect. We have heard that a BILLION times! NEXT

  44. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) October 15, 2011

What kind of an ignorant ass b**** would post that Beyonceitis comment??Are you serious with this mess (sorry @ POP ROYALTY, but really now?)??WHAT THE F*** IS BEYONCEITIS?? (I can’t believe I even typed that word). There is no such b******* and there is nothing special or extraordinary about Beyonce’s effect on her competition. When a new artists comes around (Beyonce) the older artists back off (Brandy, Monica, Mya) and when an more promoted act emerges (Beyonce) then the non-promoted acts flop (Ciara). That’s how it is and how it has been since the damn 50’s.This is an industry rule, not a Beyonce achievement 🙄

THIS mess is why people throw shade to Beyonce and drag her left right and centre.Because there is a select amount of people in her fanbase that spreads their irrational delusions on blogs. And not all Beyonce fans are like that, but some people make all the fanbase look bad 🙄

  45. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) October 15, 2011

    *when a more promoted act
    *select group
    *spread

  46. Fabio October 15, 2011

ASAP you have some sense its not difficult to put two and two together on industry politics I just don’t know why these beyonce fans think she is so omnipotent NO ONE can be on top forever, she has decided to manage herself and start her own label bey that is and hasn’t even reached platinum status, the label is no longer obligated to buy up her albums making it look like she sells huge numbers so they can recover revenue from publicity and endorsements.

  47. JAMIR21: I LOVE RIHANNA, BRITNEY, BEYONCE, NICKI AND GAGA October 15, 2011

Mya she is just boring she has no personality….she will not sell records because she doesnt have that IT FACTOR that Nicki, Beyonce, Rihanna, Gaga, Britney has !

  48. Fabio October 15, 2011

Oh and LOMFL at the Kat Deluna fan up top what has Kat done in her short-lived career…ZILCH Mya has been way more successful than Kat, Ashanti, Amerie Ciara…etc

  49. swagg October 15, 2011

and also agree mya was like Aaliyah’s distant cousin….except Aaliyah had more of an edge better music videos, songs, dancing, and voice…can any fans of bey tell me where they get this idea she has taken over the world….i mean she has success cant take that away but when brandy monica aaliyah ect was doing there thing they all sold double triple platinum albums and better only thing bey has they dont is hella grammies (half she got with dc) A keys slays every bey album with her sales and chart success still….just wondering why ppl r delusional thinking she is out doing everybody?? grammies are voted on by the recording academy album sales and chart success only happens when the PUBLIC buys or requests your music!

  50. Beelzebub October 15, 2011

She was just the IT GIRL for a hot minute, not unlike Ashanti. She was pretty, had a pleasant voice but nothing all that substantial. When her status as the go-to hookgirl dried up, so did her career after fleeting solo success. Most people saw this coming from day 1 … (you can add Ciara to that list as well).

Years ago there was a guy on velvetrope.com that loved to throw out her chart stats as reason she was a superstar but looks like everyone else was right – her career was over. Her only real big solo hit was “Case of the Ex” — “Lady Marmalade” would have been a hit if they replaced her with just about anyone else from Chante Moore to Lina.

  51. Amazen October 15, 2011

Mya stuff was never strong enough. Her videos were always cheap and boring her live performances were boring her dancing was good but she didn’t showcase it enough. Had she built her career around her dancing and released more club songs maybe she still be here. It seem like mya always released these boring mid tempo’s that weren’t really catchy (best of me, Lock u down, Ridin, My love is like Woah) she needed to bring some heat something loud and hard

  52. makemeproud October 15, 2011

I have always been a huge fan of Mya and it sucks that she isn’t releasing the hits that she should be.I think with the right producers, songwriters, and a label that is willing to take time out and really work with her, then yes,she could make an ultimate comeback.I mean, she has been out the game for a minute now, so she could generate some buzz.Maybe drop an r&b mixtape? But,with the entertainment industry,it is not guaranteed. It all starts with the slump of record sales. There will be younger artists that come in and take the shine away. One has to stay strong and keep up.Its some artists out here right now whose sales are plumenting. It is possible for her to make a comeback. As long as she does it the right way and treats it like its her last chance.

  53. Clark Smith October 15, 2011

Mya will be infected very soon. She better get vaccinated (score a hit with a Lil Wayne feature)

  54. HaraJane October 15, 2011

Mya better hope Beyonce stays pregnant or keeps getting pregnant. She won’t make a comeback as long as Beyonce is around. All people seem to care about is Beyonce. She’s beautiful and can sing but I’m not a fan of her music or her voice. I prefer Mya’s softer and more delicate voice. God, Beyonce must be thanking her lucky stars Aaliyah is gone. There is no way Beyonce would’ve made it to the top if Aaliyah was around. Aaliyah’s music was better, her dancing was free flowing & beautiful, she was well spoken, and could act. She was natural and way more interesting. Mya should try to appeal to more people outside of the urban market. She needs that X factor. Maybe she do pop or something.

    • stop March 2, 2015

please stop with this aaliyah mess i mean damn she was not that good she didnt dance that good and her music was not that good. aaliyah only became big because of her tradgity. I perfer beyonce’s music over hers and i barly like beyonce. she still wouldnt be big today she is not a good dancer or singer. Im a hugh mya fan, this lady is always perfoming and putting out EP’s ok stop trying to down her. If you’re not a fan just keep it moving and shut up. thank you have a good day.

  55. NaQu October 15, 2011

Some of you people are so simple. I’m a Beyonce fan, but the way her name infests every f****** post on this blog is ridiculous. Beyonce didn’t kill anyone’s career (and Rihanna sure as hell didn’t.) If someone wasn’t able to maintain their career, it’s their own fault.

    As for Mya…

The truth is that she was never “necessary” to begin with. Everything about Mya: the music, the videos, the promotion always felt “cheap”. I saw the scene as being Aaliyah-Brandy-Monica. Mya was always 1 too many. She can dance her ass off, but her singing voice was bad and her songs were — again — cheap. She got the little bit of shine that she did because she came out with Sisqo/Dru Hill (who were popular at the time) and then rode the wave of that late 90s t*** R&B girl scene. But she was never at the top of her game, was never amongst the most notable, and always had paltry management. She, like I said, just rode a wave of the times…but when that wave eventually died, that was it for her. Plain and simple.

Had nothing to do with “product” vs. “promotion” or Beyonce. Mya was never a star in her own rite; she was just “another one.”

^So true! Beyonce would still be Beyonce i.e. incessant, successful and oh so slightly tacky, but it would be a different ballgame entirely had Aaliyah not passed as it is infinitely harder to conquer when you’re constantly being shown up by an equally beautiful yet more engaging girl with all round with cooler, edgier and more effortlessly accomplished material. Believe, Beyonce would be here but she would be playing catch up where it counts.

Very Well Put ! People Want To Undermine Aaliyah Now a days Acting Like She Wasnt that B**** ! That Everyone was Tryna Fill aaliyah’s Void After her Death ! Mya Should Have STEPPED her Cookies Up & Try To Fill Aaliyahs Void But She Didnt & Beyonce Snatched The Crown Which she Won By Default ! Aaliyah Would Be Queen A & If Bey was Lucky She Would Be Queen bey Just under aaliyah

I agree. Beyonce would be another singing b*** shaker who would be playing catch up to keep up with Aaliyah’s edgier and engaging style. Then she’d probably give up once she realized that most people prefer Aaliyah. Beyonce lucked out with Aaliyah’s passing. She’s where she is because Aaliyah is gone. How would she be able to keep with or top Aaliyah? We’ll never know.
