A Must Read: Former Destiny’s Child Star LaTavia Talks Kelly Rowland, Mathew Knowles, & More!

Published: Monday 3rd Oct 2011 by Sam

Once band-members, then legal foes, Kelly Rowland and LaTavia Roberson have quite the the seasoned backstory.

However, as the age-old adage goes, time heals heals even deepest of wounds. Something Robertson’s recent comments about her former Destiny’s Child cohort highlights.

The 29 year old also had quite ‘interesting’ comments about the group’s former manager, Beyonce‘s father Mathew Knowles.

A lengthy read, yet a great one.

Via The Mirror:

LaTavia Roberson, Kelly’s childhood friend and a founder member of the all-girl supergroup, recalls: “Matthew did not mince his words and it can be tough to take that kind of criticism when you are a little girl. We would try not to let it break us.

“But Kelly was the sensitive one, and sometimes she would go to her room and cry.”

Now 30, Kelly Rowland is queen of all she surveys… singer, dancer, songwriter, model and now X Factor judge. Her debut on British TV has been a triumph as she oozes confidence and class.

She has come a long way from the young girl torn off a strip that night in Atlanta – and her personal fortune is now estimated at £12million.

LaTavia, now 29, says: “It’s amazing how well Kelly has done since then. She has really blossomed and for me it has been fantastic to watch her become this strong, independent woman.

“She is an inspiration to anyone, and I am honoured to call her my friend.”

Today she reveals how she regrets losing her place in Destiny’s Child just as they were making it big in 1999 with hit singles Bills, Bills, Bills and Say My Name.

She says she and original fourth member LeToya Luckett were both forced out after they sent a disgruntled letter to manager Matthew.

Now she wishes she had discussed her feelings with Kelly and Beyonce beforegoing ahead but says she was too young to realise how serious the repercussions might be.

The two girls lost their dream and Destiny’s Child went on to become one of the most successful girl bands in the world, selling 40 million records then launching successful solo careers.

Matthew Knowles quit his job with a pharmaceutical company to become their full-time manager and Latavia says he acted like an army drill sergeant, making them sing as they jogged in the park and rehearse dance routines in the family living room for hours on end. They even held joint prayer sessions to ask God to help them get the record deal they craved so much. It was like the famously regimented childhood of the Jackson Five.

“We used to call him Joe Jackson,” says Latavia. “It’s not like he beat us with his belt or anything, but he was very strict. Beyonce was the only one brave enough to stand up to him.”

“We worked really hard. It was rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. It would be the four of us and he was like a drill sergeant. When summertime came he would start a camp at his house in Houston.

“He would make us wake up early in the morning and take us to Herman Park. There was a three-and-a-half mile track and we would sing while we jogged around it. Then we would go to the house and rehearse.

“That’s what our days consisted of, seven days a week. Looking back, working that hard did cost us our childhood. But at the time we were just focused on living out our dreams.”

In 1996 Knowles asked the parents of the other three girls if he could become their guardian.

The mothers of LaTavia and LeToya refused, but Kelly’s mother, who ran out on her drunk, abusive husband when Kelly was just three, agreed. From then on, she lived with the Knowles family in a cramped, two-bedroom apartment.

LaTavia says: “Matthew and Tina would share one room and Beyonce, her sister Solange and Kelly would share the other. They had two single beds with pull-outs underneath. Looking back, it must have been stressful for the family.”

LaTavia reveals how they were so determined to make it big that they used to stand in a circle and pray that they would get a recording contract. In 1997, their prayers were answered.

“We were flown to New York for an audition and signed with Columbia records almost the same day,” she says. Destiny’s Child joined another all-girl band, TLC, on the road, and released their first hit single, No, No, No.

“Being on tour was very intense,” says LaTavia. “We were girls, we were going through puberty. Hormones were crazy. The schedule would be challenging… late nights and early days.

“We always switched who was sharing rooms. One week I would be with Beyonce, the next with Kelly, then LeToya. Kelly was always very sweet. She was kinda shy, especially when she was younger. I am not going to say that Kelly had bad self-esteem, but she was timid. She was definitely the quiet one of the four of us.

“LeToya was the jokester, I was the sassy one, Beyonce was the mamma and Kelly the sensitive one. Watching movies, she’d be the first to cry.”

LaTavia reveals how she and LeToya began to have “serious issues” with their manager. “Things seemed unfair,” she says. “Beyonce and Kelly had cars. I’m not saying pay cheques were any different, but Matthew used to say a lot of crazy things like, ‘Y’all should be glad I’m giving you money’.

“We were happy for Matthew to stay on as manager, but we wanted another manager to work with him.”

So LaTavia and LeToya wrote their fateful letter to Knowles expressing their concerns. The next thing they knew, says LaTavia, they were out. But they didn’t find out until they saw the video for Say My Name with two new girls in their places. They officially left Destiny’s Child in December 1999, when they were just 18.

“My one regret is that I should have spoken to Beyonce and Kelly before I sent the letter,” says LaTavia. “That is the one thing I would have done different. I would have gone to my sisters and discussed it with them. After that, we didn’t speak for many years.”

Her dreams of stardom crushed, LaTavia became an alcoholic and in 2006 went to jail having failed a drugs test while still on probation for a driving offence. But following a stint in rehab, she has now got her life back on track and plans to open a lingerie business.

She has nothing but positive memories of her former bandmates. “I saw Beyonce in 2003 and we just hugged and talked… it was so emotional,” she says.

“I spoke to Kelly last year and I asked her, ‘Do you understand why we did what we did?’ She said, ‘Oh gosh, yes’. And that was enough for me.

“I am convinced that if it was not for Matthew Knowles we would still be together as a band.”

But she says: “We’ll always be sisters. Nothing can take that away from us.”

Forget the lingerie line, love. We want that book! Spill.that.tea…in a classy way of course!

This is just…. emotional to read! Matthew was only strict because he wanted them to succeed. I reckon there dads would’ve done the same thing. Latavia and LeToya needed to just grow up and get over it! What a shame, they would’ve been successful by now if they didn’t leave.

  2. jrizza October 3, 2011

hmm.. the way she keeps saying Kelly was timid and shy makes me feel like she was throwing shade or somehting.

  3. Liam October 3, 2011

That’s nice they all still get along…..no one wonder Beyonce is workaholic lol that intense training was instill in her from young the hunger and passion! As for Kelly she has finally come in to her own judging by she was younger we could tell she was shy one from the bunch and now she’s a s** vixen love it….Letoya is still funny and we see that thru her interviews lol good for Latavia that she is finally do something for herself!

  4. Those That Cannot Do, Stan October 3, 2011

SMH, reading her story is why I always found some aspects of DC so distasteful.

I remember just being a little girl doing ballet and seeing how my mom would defend my rights to not be pushed to the back to let some other chick be the star. Matthew probably was a lot like Joe Jackson without the violence and I’m sure he wanted total control of the girls physically and mentally.

If the other two mothers had agreed for him to be guardian where would LaToya and LaTavia have slept? In the same room with 3 other girls?

Also why boot out children for a letter expressing disatisfaction with your work?

And I was never cool with one girl singing all the major leads and the others singing background, I guess Kelly’s mom was more focused on her other problems because most mothers would be pissed to see their daughters singing harmony and background 75% of the time.

Wow, well I wish her the best and am glad everyone has grown up and gotten past need for Matthew.

    • ccinthelou October 31, 2014

Yes, that was why he wanted to be their legal guardian, not only for the business purpose but to take full control. Kelly’s mom…..that’s another story…how can you give someone legal guardianship over your child.

  5. Teyah October 3, 2011

the part where she said they wrote a letter to Matthew…um don’t they have mouths? lol he’s their manager, if they have a problem say it to his face smh

  6. KIMBERLY October 3, 2011

if you were getting paid the same why not buy your own car?
Latavia never mentioned that the girls begged them to come to the mtv appearance.
La Tavia let it go, thank God you admit what the haters refuse to admit. You were too young to know. If Mathew did not take these measures, DC would not be so successful of there would be no more of them.
Why complain about a man who sacrifice his job, house, bank account, marriage, children comfort to make you guys successful. I will never understand. In the right of all, these girls first pay check should go to mathew. The Knowles entire life changed because of mathew selling his property to invest it in you.
    La tavia get lost.

  7. Teyah October 3, 2011

    @KIMBERLY

Girl preach! you are so right!!! they need to stop complaining about Mathew!

Beyonce is on top like this because she did sell her soul to the devil for fame. How so many people being so judgemental. You don’t know what all that girl had to go through. Let alone none of these girls got to enjoy just being a kid. Everybody so far up up Beyonce ass she still not doing s*** for you. Regardless of any of our opinions we still who we are and Beyonce still stacking her dollars. So talk s*** about ya life or right a book when you start making so big money

  21. Blank October 3, 2011

  22. EightiesBaby8030 October 3, 2011

I ain’t mad at Latavia for spilling a little tea. If you don’t want any then, keep it moving, you don’t have to bash the poor girl for telling her story.

  23. Romeo October 3, 2011

I’M GONNA NEED THAT BOOK! lol

  24. bey’knight October 3, 2011

i read this via a tweet yday.. doesnt sound like sour grapes to me , she kept it cool but she shoulda moved on honestly we are all gonna have setbacks in our life at one point or another . it shouldnt define us for the reset of our lives, Latoya is a good example of that

btw the DC sales figure is wrong, they sold 50 million records not 40 million. i know a mutha* wont be using this article as receipt in future lol

  25. lyric “commander” lee October 3, 2011

  26. Myrl22 October 3, 2011

I love kelly. I didnt have a chance to know Latavia that much from her time with DC. When I think about DC I think about DC3. But I love Kelly from the start. Always knew that she had the biggest heart without even knowing her.

  27. Fleur October 3, 2011

“I am convinced that if it was not for Matthew Knowles we would still be together as a band” LaTavia.

Well LaTavia and others…I’m convince without Matthew Knowles there would be no Destiny’s Child & DC legacy to begin with. Matthew has his flaws. Nevertheless, he is neither a monster nor a saint. He’s a human being. Therefore, stop trying to discredit Mathew’s hard work, sacrifices, and faith in DC to build up your own.

“Matthew was strict” OK…He didn’t bully or abuse you or any other DC members. If he did, say so clearly.

“We worked really hard. It was rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. It would be the four of us and he was like a drill sergeant. ” Good for you all. Now, continue to employ these trainings & hard work into your careers.

“Things seemed unfair,” she says. “Beyonce and Kelly had cars. I’m not saying pay cheques were any different.” Then LaTavia, what are you REALLY saying if all paychecks were the same. So what Beyonce and Kelly had cars?

LaTavia, LeToya, & Farrah can continue to write novels about their experience in DC and the tirant Matthew Knowles for all I care. This one is a good read. It doesn’t change my opinion and respect for the Knowles, King B, & DC3. At the end of the day, all members who once stood under the Destiny’s Child umbrella continue to get paid and continue to receive exposure. So ladies…Get money.

    • Paleflor June 28, 2022

You mean without Andretta Tillman there would be no DC

  28. TIMMI October 3, 2011

Some of you are fast to cuss out these girls for voicing their opinion on Matthew, but let’s remember some important facts.

Farrah, who was drawn in as a replacement, left.

Kelly, who told Letoya she understood why her and LaTavia left, eventually left his management herself.

And more recently and importantly, Beyonce herself has now left her father’s management.

So go figure… Obviously the picture wasn’t as pretty as you would like to think it was.

  29. TIMMI October 3, 2011

And how could I forget Michelle? She ALSO left Matthew’s management, soon after Kelly.

  30. TIMMI October 3, 2011

And also, yeah you guessed right, I forgot another one.

Tiffany Evans also left Matthew’s management….

  31. TIMMI October 3, 2011

And oh dear… One last one (I THINK)…

Lyfe Jennings also booted Matthew out the door.

    Anyone noticing some correlation?

  32. meme October 3, 2011

I’m sure neither one of the girls, whether it is Bee or Kelly will really appreciate this.

  33. VIVIENE J October 3, 2011

@Kwame, thre was a DC documenary cnt remember which one when they talked about the pressure that was put on B’s parents relationship when he quit his job to manage them. Eventually they had to sell one of their cars, their “mansion” and move into a small 2 bed apartment, her parents even separated for a while

  34. Jade October 3, 2011

LaTavia never bad mouthed anyone and its easy to tell someone to get over it when you are not and have never been in their shoes. Maybe finally clearing the air after all these years is what is helping her move forward. She was the one who had a lot of issues after the drama with DC went down. Let that woman exhale and stop being so judgemental.

  35. smh October 3, 2011

dc sold 100million records not 40 or 50. anyways latavia quit telling us the same story over and over again… and i co-sign with kimberley completely too.

  36. Teflon Boy October 3, 2011

@Fleur…, what she’s really saying is ‘Ok, we all had the same pay cheques but Matthew was buying Beyonce and Kelly expensive gifts on top of what we were all receiving using money we ALL earned. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that that is somewhat unfair…, because if me and you are doing the same job and getting the same pay but the boss is giving me expensive bonuses such as cars and jewels and whatever other ‘pocket money’ on the side from the same money pool but not you then truth be told you would rightfully have a problem with that.

Lastly, Latavia sounds like she is ‘over it’ but sometimes it takes about 10 years to really be able to see a situation clearly. The fact Beyonce, Letoya, Latavia and Kelly have mellowed towards each other since the fallout yet the one person not in on the love-in is Matthew shows that irrespective of his hard work and dedication in making them successful there is more to the story and it’s not just one disgruntled ex-member with a grievance making trouble, he clearly he has crossed some kind of line with each of them. In fact it’s kind of obvious that once the dust settled both Beyonce and Kelly saw just how wrong and biased the previous set-up had been. Not to throw shade at either of them though, because it’s not always easy for the full belly to notice the hungry belly.

  37. itsjoshcox October 3, 2011

I think all of them are friends again because they all have finally seen the light. LeToya and LaTavia saw the problems with Matthew early on, but it took Beyonce and Kelly longer to realize who they were working with. Funny how NONE of the girls from Destiny’s Child are working with Matthew in any capacity these days.

I’m sure the intense training and rehearsing that Matthew led made them as talented and hard-working as they are today, but that doesn’t overshadow his record of very shady business practices.

And yeah, LaTavia does share her story a lot, but she can share as much as she’d like to. You reading it, however, is completely optional.

  38. KillBill October 3, 2011

    im a ready for DC3 movie……………….

  39. Popeater October 3, 2011

She favors Countess Vaughn fro the Parkers. LeToya and Latavia were my two favorites originally. They were both back up, but they were the prettiest to me and added a special element to the group.

I love Kelly now!!! She’s really come into her own. Bey’s okay. I think she’s talented, just not a fan.

  40. Minx October 3, 2011

    @JOhnDival

    That’s the USA alone dumbass.

And I like how Sam only highlighted that one part.

And I am glad that Latavia admitted to what we have been saying for the longest. BEYONCE HAD S*** TO DO WITH THE SITUATION. IT WAS ALL MATHEW.

  41. Bey Fan… October 3, 2011

Just popped in to say that the Matthew and Joe comparison is another reason why ppl think Beyonce’s and Micheal’s career paralleled…..

It was a good little read, but nuthin new. And I wish I had a father like Matthew, strict, but he didn’t force them to do anything. He said, if this is your dream, if this is what you want….this is what needs to be done.

Lastly, Matt was the father and legal guardian…. so how can we make a distinction from him providing for the girls as manager and him buying gifts for his little girls. Im sure there are ALOT of manager’s children sitting paid, while the artist themselves are in these contracts and really not seeing half of the money they make.

  42. twm October 3, 2011

Yeah i hope she got an album ready…

  43. THEMAN October 3, 2011

With all of those “DC” albums and tours and her albums and other ventures Kelly i think is worth way more than 50 mil dollars.

“Lastly, Matt was the father and legal guardian…. so how can we make a distinction from him providing for the girls as manager and him buying gifts for his little girls” BEY FAN…

    @ TEFLON BOY

See quote above. The boss/manager was also a father with a flourishing career & investments. In addition, his wife, Ms. Tina, had a fruitful career & investments as well. At some points, her career was thriving even more than that of her husband. Their children also had their own. Therefore, Ms. LaTavia and others had/have little reason to worry about how Beyonce & Kelly got their cars since she explains, “I’m not saying pay cheques were any different.”

Over the years, each of their stories falls in line. According to their interviews, I don’t see the evidence which proves that Matthew cross some line. If he did, the wronged members should speak on it clearly. I don’t notice how “Beyonce and Kelly saw just how wrong and biased the previous set-up had been.” In fact, I witness greater harmony in DC3. Matthew invested greatly DC, and he helped strenghten each members foundation for success.

All members who once stood under the Destiny’s Child umbrella have a story to tell, and they don’t have to disclose it at anyone’s expanse. There is nothing wrong with building on these stories, and sharing it with the world. They appear to be grown & establish women, so it’s not surprising for them to be civil and mellow towards each other.

Can I take a fuckun rest without seeing all that DC3 mess again ?!

mathew is the typical father who will sacrifice anything to achieve his daughters dreams ! But I guess he wasn’t honestly ready for other girls to be on board ! his actions seems forced in the beginning of all that ..
Kelly was the one who LIKED to be in the shadow ! And her fans, and BEYONCE haters always love to play with expired exhausted card ! She doesnt want to be a star ! she is used to be a back up singer ! She will take a lot of time to realize she’s really SOLO now !
Michelle is just a spare/ an extra right there ! she never get any love ! She’s the one who need to make a pray circle to pray for a DC3 reunion 😆
I feel sorry for other girls !! Like really ! they are literally victims ! But B****** suck it up and move the f*** on !

Who still care about DC3 past s*** in 2011 ?!!!!!! The whole thing is tired , IRRELEVANT and disgusting !!

And someone needed to ask her do she have the ” SURVIVOR” album ?! 😆

  51. Pop Royalty (RUDE BOY) October 3, 2011

    Fuckun= F******
    Daughters = daughter’s *

    do = does *

  52. MISHKA October 3, 2011

    Dear Latavia,

How many BLACK men you know would quit a well-paid job in order to help his daughter achieve her dreams? How many married men and fathers of two would take that risk ?

Matthew quit his job when Beyonce was 9. Destiny’s Child didn’t get a deal until she was 16. You said you do realize it was a stressful but you somewhat managed to throw him under the bus. For the 11, 999,999 th time.

I remember the day I saw ‘No,No,No (remix)’ for the first time on TV. After those 4 minutes, I knew Destiny’s Child was here to stay. Allure, Blaque, Xcape, Total, all those girls bands would disband but Destiny’s Child would be around for a long time. Everything about DC screamed preparation, professionnal, management. You don’t achieve that kind of body work without some regiment. Maybe (probably) Matthew was strict but he had a vision, he took a risk and finally it paid off.

DC4 was about to go big, and that’s the moment Letoya and you (I always knew you did Letoya wrong) chose to fire Matthew. So he invested his time, his family, his money into DC and you wanted to do diva. Well, he showed you diva and you got your stoopid a%%es fired. Columbia didn’t want nothing to do with your ghetto attitude ( yes, to fire your manager when you have a #1 song in the country IS ghetto) and white people (the audience who actually buy albums) didn’t even know who you are. They only cared about the blonde girl who always sings the solos and the dark girl with the very short hairdo.

So this is my opinion: go back to Irrelevancy Town because you’re NOT needed here. There will NEVAH! be a DC reunion with you. Letoya may stand a chance but not you. You ruined DC4, you ruined Letoya’s career, you ruined ‘The writing’s on the wall”, you ruined ‘Say My Name’, you ruined ‘Jumpin’ Jumpin’, you almost ruined ‘Y2K’ for me and my gurls !!!

    *Takes a breath*

Matthew should sue you for talking trash on him after 10 modafoka years. The man led DC to grammys, to the walk of fame. He’s not the best manager in the world but he did his best. Stop disrespecting him. Ask your own father to quit his job and to get you bookings and appearances and bring us the receipts. Until then, shut the fµck up.

Wow and Beyonce tried to throw shade at Janet Jackson in regards to Joe Jackson…..that’s interesting. This young lady need to write a book and throw the Knowles to the wolves like they did her.

wow some of you are cruel she’s allowed to express her personal journey. all she did was tell the truth i don’t think she was trying to throw anyone under the bus just being honest.

Matthew’s greed caught up with his ass when he got super comfortable and took his own daughters money *rumours*
    Bee let him go.

He did great in the way he moulded them into a super group and look now, it has definately paid off when you see the SUPER work ethic of 3 of them in particular (Bee, Kelly & LeToya).
    Beyonce is like SUPERWOMAN
Kelly has now found herself as an artist and a woman so now has blossomed fully and even more doors have opened.
LeToya has a mentality that a hustler would be proud of. Music, movies, tv shows, advertisments & her own business. *ching ching*

LaTavia gotta find herself and make sure the coins she has left works for her. Unfortunately she did the opposite to LeToya and fell off into the wilderness.

Michelle needs to find her niche and run with it. Gospel is her avenue IMO *in my opinion*

Matthew i’d say share, dont steal *Revelations of the lord come to light* AMEN!

Kimberly and you other losers who have no money need to STFU!!!! How f****** dare y’all? LaTavia needs to get over it??? Easier said than done! How the hell can she get over it when she has NOTHING! LeToya is acting like she has a successful career but the b**** got dropped from her label a few years ago, and many people still don’t remember who she is. How would y’all, who are criticizing her, feel if y’all dream was crushed, after y’all worked so hard! She has every right to be pissed and she IS THE ONLY DC MEMBER WHO IS KEEPING IT REAL! I love Kelly Rowland, but she was so damn STUPID for the longest time. Her fans kept telling her for years that Matthew didn’t give too shits about her having successful solo career. He really didn’t do anything for her, but the minimum that a manager could do. I think it’s sick and pitiful that he would verbally abuse young girls, just so his daughter could get famous and he could live a lavish lifestyle! He was always so controlling, don’t y’all remember when he kept on speaking for Beyonce and defending her, every time someone famous would criticize her work?

You idiots who are talking badly about LaTavia must have nothing in life and really no big dreams or aspirations. I couldn’t imagine having something so precious, that I worked hard for, and it being taken away from me so abruptly. The others aren’t saying s*** because they are stupid/naïve. They’re the type of people who were taught to forget and forgive no matter what. Farrah’s ass left the group too because she didn’t like the way she was being treated! There are people who are stupid enough to put up with s*** and others who won’t take s*** and LaTavia and Farrah didn’t take s***! C’MON, YOU HAVE TO BE A FOOL TO NOT BELIEVE THAT MATTHEW ONLY CREATED DC AS A PLOY FOR BEYONCE TO BE A STAR!!! Back then, groups were the hottest thing and it was easier to get music listeners attention when you had a band, than it was when you had a solo act! Matthew is nothing but a monster and a c***! That’s why Beyonce aint dealing with his ass anymore!

  59. lola October 5, 2011

AND ANOTHER THING….. If Matthew was so damn great, why the f*** did LeToya, LaTavia, Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams, and f****** Beyonce fire him as a manager? Beyonce even admitted that her dad was strict in interviews years ago when her solo career blew up and said that we’d be surprise at the language she uses when she gets into arguments with him!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stop saying he sacrificed his career for these girls…. NO B******…. HE DID THAT FOR BEYONCE!!!! Again, his goal was to ready Beyonce for a solo career and used a “GROUP” to do it, because that was the fad back in the day! He took notes from the Supremes and Jackson Five!!!!

  60. CALL ME HATERRRRRRRRRRR October 6, 2011

    @JRIZZA

    FALL THE HELL BACK

SHE WASNT THROWING SHADE TOWARDS ANYONE JUST KEEPING IT REAL

AND BEYONCE IS KINGGG!! A MEGA STAR…MATHEW KNOWELS WAS TERRIBLY WRONG FOR SAYING AND DOING CERTAIN THINGS BUT EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON

  61. Lamar Coaston Jr November 21, 2013

Matthew & The Girls should re unite as family and do it all over again! I think not only would their fans accept it with open arms, it would be a great “Healing” not to mention very Lucrative venture also!

Once again Beyonce comes out looking like an angel. If everything’s cool between them why are there just reunions with the 3 and not the entire group? If Beyonce had been Rihanna, people would be telling the truth and bashing her.
