Album Review: Rihanna – ‘Talk That Talk’

Published: Friday 11th Nov 2011 by Sam

Six albums in six years. Say what you want about Rihanna, but that is quite the feat.

Yet, it’s this very fact that has divided fans and critics alike. For, the Bajan star has crammed into her short career releases and achievements her predecessors have worked decades to amass.

Predictably, the 23 year old’s supporters lap up each annual effort. One after the other, after the other. However, growing ever wider is the sect of listeners who attribute her success to being little more than a record label puppet. Indeed, with few writing credits, a limited vocal range, and a “change-with-the-sway” sound, it’s hard to posit the contrary.

Whatever the reality, the singer remains a staple on the tongues of many.  A sentiment well captured on the title of her sixth studio album ‘Talk That Talk’.

However, with ample doubt still surrounding Ri’s legitimacy, it quite – literally – is time for her to ‘walk that walk’.

After attending Def Jam’s London playback, That Grape Juice gives you the WORLD EXCLUSIVE first full review of the album everyone’s waiting for.

First things first, an all-star cast have been assmbled to craft the star’s latest batch of hits. Indeed, premium production pervades the 11-song set courtesy of The Dream, Dr Luke, Stargate, Ester Dean, Alex Da Kidd, to mention but a few. However, as will be uncovered, this overt approach to hit-hunting serves as the album’s biggest strength, yet dually as its Achilles Heel.

Opener ‘You Da One’ establishes a welcome shift in tempo from whimsical lead single ‘We Found Love’. A pulsating mid-tempo, the track is laced with enough “eh eh’s” and “ah ah’s” to resonate with radio. Yet producer Dr Luke pairs this with ample ‘edge’ by way of gritty production and an immense Drum n Bass bridge, both of which contrast the song’s lyrical sweetness. A solid step in the right direction.

What isn’t, however, is the singer’s hyper-reliance on ‘sex’. Thematically, the topic is omnipresent throughout the record – largely to its detriment. Bizarre numbers ‘Birthday Cake’ and ‘Cockiness (Love It)’ – perhaps best underscore this. Flagrantly provocative, the songs don’t exclusively fall short because of their lyrical looseness. No. Rather, they largely lack, as they simply aren’t a fraction as interesting as their root titles imply.

Indeed, Bangladesh’s  ‘Cockiness’ boasts production that negatively highlights the difference between innovative and irrational; sounding altogether like construction noise. The cut also features the singer at her nasal worst, which in itself, speaks volumes.  While, ‘Cake’ serves up faux-attitude (“I’mma make you my bitch”) and perhaps the most lyrically redundant hook on the entire LP (“cake, cake, cake, cake”). The latter of which is some achievement, as even the best tracks on the record find their choruses consisting of but a few words repeated over and over. Case, point, example, the Afro-Beats meets ‘Only Girl’ winner of a cut ‘Where Have You Been’.

The album is by no means a doomed affair; a fact driven all the way home by its epic standout track ‘Talk That Talk (ft. Jay-Z)’. Filthy, mucky, and gritty, the cut turns each of the aforementioned into a positive due to essentially being that good.  ‘Talk’ – the older, raunchier sister of ‘Rude Boy’ – sees Rihanna re-engage with Caribbean diction, as she effortlessly rides Stargate’s cutting edge beat.  However, the undeniable MVP here is Jay-Z who savagely attacks his 16 bar track opener with ear-grabbing ferocity. A “must be” future single, as is ‘Roc Me Out’ – which too borrows from the ‘Rude Boy’ template.

Elsewhere, tracks such as ‘Farewell’ and the drum-driven ‘Drunk on Love’ usher in shining moments vocally on an otherwise heavily processed set. Noted by even her fiercest critics for possessing a unique tone, these cuts extract the best qualities from her oft-misused instrument.  Yet, in doing so, the production brilliance that defines much of the album is lost. A shame, as a healthy balance between vocal projection and production would have elevated such tracks above their album-track-at-best status.

A flash of such potential, however, is briefly realized in the form of ‘We All Want Love’. Easily the most Pop outright cut on the record, the NO ID number avoids generic territory with its anthemic chorus and Folk sensibilities. As such, the track renders a sound Rihanna would be well-advised to explore. That is, of course, if musical growth is on her agenda.

With ‘Talk That Talk’, then, the young starlet presents quite the conundrum. For, on one hand, the album embodies much of what’s wrong with today’s industry (over-processed, lyrically empty, and vocally unchallenged). Yet, on the other, shows baby-step progression and inklings of musical maturity. Slowly, but surely, ay?

That Grape Juice Rating: 3/5 Stars

    STUPID SAM!!!!

  12. AuntieJackie November 11, 2011

Good, honest review. The album surely has some good songs, but I can’t imagine that it means anything more than more top 20/top 10 hits. I think she’s releasing herself into a corner. Will there be an album every 6 months? When will it get old that these singles reach the top 20/top 10? How “bad ass” can she be?

It’s not old just yet, but it’s going to get there.

  17. RIHNATION November 11, 2011

Um Sam, you will NEVER give Rihanna a fair critique being that you dont like and obviously JEALOUS of her! Here’s a True Critic/Journalist From MTV giving a reveiew..

Rihanna’s Talk That Talk: Bad Girl Goes Even Badder

Rihanna takes the reins on her new album, which is not only the best of her career, but perhaps the best pop album of the year.
    By James Montgomery (@positivnegativ)

Rihanna’s already Gone Bad, been Rated R and gotten Loud (all within the span of about four years, mind you), which sort of raises the question: What’s left?

Well, if her new album, Talk That Talk — in stores November 21 — is any indication, she’s not really sure of the answer. But here’s the brilliant thing about the disc: Rather than go searching for a new public persona, this time around, she’s simply content to sharpen her focus.

And in doing that, she’s created an album that is badder, raunchier and louder than anything she’s ever done before; an endlessly compelling, hit-soaked, high-powered thing that’s not only the best effort of her career, but arguably the best pop album of 2011. Talk That Talk outmuscles Born This Way, outguns Femme Fatale and, while it might never outsell 21 (because, really, what album can at this point?), it certainly outworks it.

Simply put, it’s the album on which Rihanna absolutely goes for it, pushing her naughty-girl image to the breaking point, embracing the clubs with both arms, strutting and lilting and sassing her way past her pop contemporaries. Working with a blue-ribbon panel of today’s most gifted hitmakers (Dr. Luke, Calvin Harris, Stargate, Bangladesh, No I.D., Hit-Boy, etc.), she’s managed to craft an album that will no doubt bear radio fruit for the foreseeable future (current single “We Found Love” is the #1 song in the country, just in case you didn’t know) but also pulls off the rather interesting feat of being endlessly, obsessively interesting too.

Take, for example, album opener “You Da One,” which starts in traditional RiRi territory — building on a slow, skanking rhythm — expands with a starbursty chorus, then contracts nearly as quickly on a knotty, ratcheting middle. Or “Where Have You Been,” a song that not only sees her borrowing lyrics from Geoff Mack’s dusty stomper “I’ve Been Everywhere,” but features a chorus that sounds very much like Faithless’ “Insomnia” and a breakdown that recalls stuff like Skrillex.

There’s the futuristic, military whomp of the title track (which gets an assist from Jay-Z, who drops bons mots like “I sell out arenas/ I call that getting dome!”); the Stargate-helmed, XX-sampling “Drunk on Love”; and the rattling raunch of interlude “Birthday Cake,” and, perhaps most notably, the oddball, organic machinations of “Cockiness,” a classic Bangladesh track that stitches together vocal whoops, cracking drums and bawling horns and features what might possibly be the year’s best (or silliest) come-on line, when Rihanna coos, “Suck my cockiness/ Lick my persuasion” (it’s either that or Gaga’s “I want your whiskey mouth/ All over my blond south”).

Of course, all those production flashes would be empty if RiRi didn’t match them every step of the way. There’s the do-it-on-the-décor lyrics of “Watch n’ Learn,” the soaring chorus she works herself up to on “We All Want Love,” and her genuinely stirring work on album-closing ballad “Farewell,” which may be her finest bit of on-album singing to date. She’s got attitude and altitude and even a little bit of verisimilitude too — all of which are necessary components of why Talk That Talk works so incredibly well.

And sure, the back end may be a bit slow, but you can certainly say that about most pop albums, can’t you? The point is, it takes a truly bad b**** to pull off an album this bodacious — regardless of genre — and on Talk That Talk, Rihanna proves that she just might be the baddest b**** of them all.

    …. .

  26. Kyle November 11, 2011

I consider myself a Rihanna fan and I will be buying this, but I am certainly not blinded by the fact that she has it wayyyy too easy. People just write songs for her, give her a good beat and she has a #1 hit. She’s one lucky girl with an amazing ‘dream team’ pushing her every inch of the way. Then again, I would do the same thing as her and milk it for all it’s worth. You only live life once. I’m not impressed with the second single “You Da One” because it sounds like everything she’s done before when she first started in ’05 but other snippets I heard yesterday sounded pretty good. I liked the songs that sort of resembled the gritty, darker tone of “Rated R,” my favorite album from her.

  27. MoMo84 November 11, 2011

LMAO she is still turning you guys down for that interview isn’t she tsk tsk tsk……………………….. Be happy that you guys were able to book the Braxtons and get off RiRi’s life, and music.

The people who you say are critically acclaimed the best in blah blah blah aren’t what they appear. We have a young black girl doing more than most musically from video’s cd’s music and all you do is hate. They should call this site “That Hate On U dot Net”

I don’t understand why you guys are always mad at tjg. He just says what a lot of people don’t seem to get out. He went to the listening party and gave a fair review. some good some wasn’t impressive.
In my opinion and what i have heard is satisfying due to the fact that she caters for teenagers and younger folk who know nothing much about music. It’s a pass but when you judge based on her 6 yr experience, her vocal improvement, her lyrics, it is s***. That is why she cannot be classed in any category of great singer, great vocalist, great entertainer. she is staying in her niche and that is it. eventually she will mature out of her rebellious attitude, her try hard attitude. lost of people have seen it.
This album is not as good as loud and as VH1 stated this is the sluttiest album in music history and trust this is not a good thing.

  49. VA STAND UP!! November 11, 2011

Well, we all know TGJ is biased as hell and usually throw Rihanna up under a dozen buses, but I do think this was a honest review! Rih stans won’t be honest with themsleves but they know this isn’t her best body of work. It is full of a bunch of leftovers from “Loud’. The lyrics are basic, her vocals are basic and the songs are forgettable. She just rushed an album to get a bunch of throw a way hits. It’s obvious…..

@ Johndival…. Boo, don’t do it… I hear very well, and am of age, and listen to different genres of music from different artist. Rihanna happens to be one of the most versatile artist out of her contemporaries. She can basically sing anything from r&b, pop, hip hop, rock, reggae, etc. She’s a very smart girl that knows what she wants and can smell a hit a mile away. She never claimed to be a great singer, but she makes fun music that stays true to her, and obviously million of people love it, and the hates can’t take it. All this success at 23. Keep doing you RihRih!

  58. Kerry Johnson November 11, 2011

  60. The G-List Society November 11, 2011

It is sooooooooooo interesting how TGJ say almost daily that Rihanna does not deserve her success because she is putting “fast food music” with “mediocre vocals.”

If Rihanna does not deserve the recognition, why does Rihanna get far more publicity here than the divas they “stan” for – including Beyonce, Keri Hilson, Kelly Rowland and Ciara?

Let’s be REALLY honest here. I am CERTAIN that outside of Rihanna fansites, TGJ posts more frequent articles about Rihanna than any other pop culture website or – in this case of the Rihanna-bashng – tabloid just to get her “Rihanny Navy stans” to defend her.

  61. DamnShame November 11, 2011

YOU ALWAYS BASH RIH..ON THIS SITE…IM GLAD I NEVER VISIT THIS SITE DAILY, AND I KNOW THAT EVERYTHING THAT RIHANNA PUT OUT YA’LL WILL BASH. BUT THAT JUST GOES HOW JEALOUS SOME PEOPLE CAN BE…LET HER ENJOY HER SUCCESS. HE PROBABLY GAVE CIARA’S ALBUM 5/5 STARS.TBH

  62. JER November 11, 2011

    shade thru and thru

  63. Tryna Be Real November 11, 2011

i think that was fair as fair can be. I’m not a fan of hers but I respect her grind but let’s be real here we all have seen this time and time again. First single blantant pop record, second single a more urban focused sound, third single a controversial song…very predictable. This is my problem with her, she could be soo much better than she chooses to be. why do think so many ppl like Rated R…because it was a lot more artistic than she had ever been. when you don’t have a huge vocal ability you should make up for it by doing something great that others suck at.

  64. TeamBreezy November 11, 2011

    I will say it NOW:

Rihanna will have the #1 Album and #1 single in the US at the same time come Nov 21st ..

  65. Yellow Gorillah November 11, 2011

3 From TGJ Means it’s a 4.5 in the real world

The album will do amazingly and time will tell how good it is when the world takes it to #1

Anyways,I see y’all are giving sam the side eye but I think Sam is saying the album is OK (because LAWD knows the way Sam is with Rihanna is the same way @S*** is with My fave)

Anyway,It will only be a matter of time before the two delusional Rihanna stans (You know who you are) Pink diamond M***** come in here to eff it up.

I’m surprised they would even invite you considering how much s*** you talk about Rihanna. So with your biased anti-Rihanna 3/5 rating, I’m guessing it’s an AMAZING album. And from what I’ve heard, sounds like a more solid album than Beyonce & Gaga’s last efforts…

I’m Surprised He Gave It A 3 (which means it has to be good, considering his feeling towards Rih)

MTV (they don’t praise her all the time) Had Nothing But Love For The Album…So Did VH1, And Mostly All The Other Outlets That Went To Her Listening Parties.

Most Importantly I Actually Like The Sound Of This Album Far Better Than “Loud”…The Only Song That Screams Filler Is “Watch & Learn” (IMO), And It Still Isn’t That Bad.

The One Song I Agree With Sam About Is “We All Want Love” That Is A Genre She Should Definitely Consider Doing More Of…The Snippet Gave Me So Much Life! 🙂

Now Rihanna stans I’m not saying anything bad about Rihanna having a song called Birthday Cake just pointing out what Xtina Coming said.

i am a rihanna fan, luv her music, but this album is a huge step from loud, much better, i can sense it has a rated r feel to it!! however, the album seems to be empty and redunadant, just the same thing over and over again, i luve rihanna and wish her well, but some of her music has no substance what so ever, mary j’;s record is so much better in my view!!

  135. Carl Neufville November 12, 2011

I heard the leak, it was garbage.

  136. Juel November 12, 2011

@Sam, your saying Rihanna has done what it has taken others over a decade to do, but she has release almost 20 years worth of albums in less than seven years. If Rihanna was releasing albums every two or three years like every other popstar where would she be right now? No where, she knows that, and her management team knows that. That’s the reason why she will never take a break. She doing twice as much to compete, by releasing albums every year, and trying to be on a track with every hot rapper and singer. Katy Perry is on her second album, and is featured on nobody track, and she’s on her sixth or seventh #1. Lady Gaga second album, and has six #1‘s. Compare that to Rihanna whose on her sixth album in less than seven years. She doesn’t even make as much as the other popstars. With back to back album and tours she should be making just as much or more money. It makes you wonder where all that money goes, since she’s selling singles. I guess payola work, but it’s definately hitting her pockets to the point that she’s not making what others are making. She work’s twice as hard as everybody else, because she knows if she take a year off she would be forgotten. Queen, please. A queen doesn’t have to release albums, back to back, or tour every year to make to compete with others. She doesn’t have to use gimmicks, because her performances will speak for themselves. It seems the only thing that selling is her singles, well LOUD sold well, but her tour tickets in most US cities had to be discounted according to ticket masters. Her last tour Flopped, Her perfume isn’t on the top selling fragrance list, she sold less than 22 million with five albums, her book went no where, and she’s not even close to the top of Forbes list, of top earning performers. She’s only known for her singles, nothing else.

  137. MCsavedmylife November 12, 2011

I thought it was a fair review. He liked some tracks, and didn’t like some tracks. You don’t have to like every single song! But what I thought was interesting how he pointed out how some of the songs sounded similar to her previous ones (‘Rude Boy’ I think was mentioned more than once), which tells me that she’s hit a wall now and using her previous songs to recycle again to move forward.

Honestly? From what I’ve read, the music on this album is nothing different to what what is already being played on the radio. She has taken no risks, there is nothing fresh on this album. Adele won’t need to release another album for a while because ’21’ was so popular, why? Because it was different. It was something fresh, and it contained something that people hadn’t heard for a while: somebody actually singing with their voice, along with deep lyrics that actually meant something and not going on about s**, attitude, losing clothes or whatever.

It’s funny, some of the artists that have been bashed here (Beyonce and Lady Gaga) are is such a different league to Rihanna, why? Because they’re involved with their music, they don’t just sing and let the producers do all their work. They actually earn money from their own songs by producing, writing,co-writing etc. whilst Rihanna doesn’t. They experiment with their music to try and be a little bit more different and stand out. Rihanna doesn’t, she just goes with what’s popular.

It will be very interesting to see where this album will be in a 6 months time.

  138. Qwerty November 12, 2011

Such a bad review… fine, it’s well written, but I can’t believe you actually thought these things! Um, the title track is beyond boring. There is no real sass or attitude, I didn’t find it at all interesting. Actually, Cockiness and Birthday Cake are WAAAY more interesting. And you didn’t even bring up Watch N Learn, which embodies basically all the best aspects of Rihanna, lyrically and musically. And when you really think about it, there are basically no bad tracks, and it has many stand outs (Drunk On Love, Watch N Learn, You Da One, We Found Love), a 3/5 seems a bit low, no?

  139. Dre November 12, 2011

@atmcsavedmylife I will pretend that you didn’t just say what I read. Beyonce’s voice is not versatile enough to venture into the genres that Rihanna covers, that’s why she stays on her lane. She is an over 30 year old and knows her booty shaking, weave blowing and shoulder shakes won’t cut it anymore and tried to somewhat market her mediocre singing skills and FAILED. The shade Sam throws Rih is cute but far from true. The album is easily a 4.6 since he gave it three. Plus, if Rih was only cute face, no talent chic, why Ciara, Kerri and Cassie not chart toppers. That lame argument Rih doesn’t have talent fails too.

  140. anna November 12, 2011

there is no depth to her music…she’s got a great team, but put her on her own and then see what happens…..

That might be his opinion but seriously he gave Kelly Rowlands s***** album more than this?
This is actually a good album way more better and consistent than that mess of an album LOUD . You Da One , Talk that talk , Roc Me out , Where have you been , Watch’N Learn , Drunk On love and We all want and Farewell are all good songs . The Deluxe songs snippets also sounded really good. I Honestly think this deserves 4/5 but at the end of the day you’re all going to Talk that talk.

  143. WHAT. November 12, 2011

i don’t understand. sam you obviously love rihanna , so why are you constantly trashing her! instead of finding a new look to stay in tune with the musical world she’s growing and keeping a steady adjustment. she’s also growing as an artist, talk that talk is by far her most maturest piece. sure it’s dirty but that’s rihanna.

Quite frankly I’m tired of Rihanna. I’m tired of her name…I’m tired of her corny bubble gum music…I’m tired of her bad singing voice…and I’m tired of her big forehead.

I, personally, hope that Rihanna will finally get her #1 album so people who make a big deal out of getting an #1 album will finally shut the hell up.

That being said, there is NOTHING anyone can do to stop “Talk That Talk” from being successful. Once again, just like “Loud,” “Talk That Talk” will be massive in the pop world & I personally love it.

Like I’ve said many times before, Rihanna is completely harmless. She is very fun. Enjoy her.

I heard the whole album on YOUTUBE and its not bad, but its not a classic either. Its the type of music Rihanna makes, pop catchy tunes that are fun to listen to if you dont take yourself too seriously.

TGJ is right that some of the production isnt stellar, sometimes she sounds like she smoked a pack of cigarettes and started singing, and that almost every song has a REPETITIVE chorus. cake cake cake, ti i i i me. we all we all we all…its like they ran out of words in the english language and were forced to use the same ones over and over.

WE ALL WANT LOVE AND FAREWELL are my favorite tracks and I think she was spot on in making WE FOUND LOVE the lead single…its a standout. I agree that the sound on We all want love is the sound thats refreshing to hear. Lyrically 2/5…fun 3/5 good pop 4/5…singles sale 4/5…im sure she gon have some singles that blaze the chart, but i still dont want to buy the whole album

    @MEL,

ciara couldn’t even knock keri hilson off, bye girl!

i love the album, which rihanna put in work to make, co writing half of the album. fun, and dirty, definetly mixing her newer style with reggae, and dancehall.
