For, while Janet Jackson made news for cancelling tour plans due to need of backing track vocal rest, Rihanna has been cited by her vocal coach to be a ‘true vocalist’. Such billing is sure to get a collective side-eye from many-a-patient currently recovering from the “true vocal” displays that were the Loud cd and accompanying tour.
As the Grammy winning NOcalist vocalist preps fans for ‘Talk That Talk’, she is releasing webisodes documenting its creation process and many other behind the scenes gems from the Loud era (which coincidentally ended less than a month before ‘Talk’ was announced’).

aside from the TGJ’s constant need to bash rihanna, they definitely have a point. this girl, talented as she may be, is NOT a skilled vocalist. at least not enough to hold her own with the likes of other artists. but like i said, she’s talented enough to get, secure, and sustain her record deal, so someone important definitely recognizes her talent. i just wish people would stop feeding into the hype of mediocre performances. singing LOUD does NOT make you an artist!!!!

Hmm .. Okay I’m not gna say her vocal coach is lying because obviously he has time with rihanna that we don’t have and sees things that we don’t see behind the scences .. HOWEVER all we the public have to judge rihanna is what were hear on her cds (which if uve seen her live is CLEARLY pitch corrected) and her tours and performances .. Now I’m kinda a fan of rihanna and I say kinda becasue I’m a fan of studio rihanna .. But when it comes to live rihanna … Well … Sometimes bad karoake is the only way to describe it and it just completely turns me off to her .. Its one thing to get handed material sit in the studio and sing it over and over until it sounds right (ud be surprised how easy it is to make someone sound great with a good sound engineer) but its another to get on stage performing and singing and sounding amazing and rihanna jus has not shown she is capable of that and that just keeps me as a casual listener .. I read this post and almost passed out. I shared it with friends and they passed out. to keep it brief. I really don’t know why her coach would say that if he didn’t mean it. but he should just say something like she is working her way and people would accept that! Meanwhile it’s ok for her fans to agree, that’s ok but if every fan accept the truth and move on and demand better then you will have her improved slaying. she ain’t slaying nobody with her songs playing every hr as directed. this shit will grow old and tired.
Her performances are the worst. if only someone would seriously speak to her, then things would be ok
If i were rihanna i would tell my label to give me 6 mnths, i would put some songs together. get some dvd’s sit and take tips, get my choreographer, learn some simple and unique dance moves and exercise my lungs to sing a note and come back and shock the hell outta people. i guess touching her self up has worked on stage. no shade but shade.
sometimes her stans need to hear it, cause someone once posted that she is great singer and performer and she is a legend in the making *blank stare*

I totally agree with @ Monica.
What MANY fail to realise is that contralto is not an easy vocal range. It takes alot of energy and breathing techniques. Especially when performing live added with dancing. It’s much easier to sing using the head voice (*like your fave*) than the chest voice. So my respect goes out to Toni Braxton, Rihanna, Cher, Anita Baker, Mariah Carey etc. Rihanna uses both head and chest voice and belting aint easy.

You clearly dont know how heavy rotation on radio works or how Billboard works.
Billboard is more impacted by digital sales than radio play. Songs can be #1 on the Hot 100 and the Digital Songs chart, but not even top 10 on the Radio Songs chart. Moves Like Jagger was in that position.
And record labels cant pay every single mainstream radio station in the country to put Rihanna’s latest single in heavy rotation. Most, if not all, radio stations place songs in heavy rotation if they are requested alot by listeners. So when hear We Found Love on the radio all the time its because people requested it. Not because your team is paying that station to pay it.
If that were the case then Lady GaGa and The Black Eyed Peas would have more #`1s than Rihanna. Their label and teams are far more powerful than Def Jam

okay cookie, like you said mariah, toni, anita, etc. are contraltos. The difference is they actually sound like respectable vocalists when singing live. Rihanna clearly DOES NOT and I’m surprised you’d mention her in that list of names. It’s not just belting, it’s her constantly going flat several times singing a song, her lack of vocal flexibility, her goat-like vibrato, her harsh tones at times. with all those names that you listed you basically just confirmed that rihanna has no excuse. Rihanna is not consistent with vocals at all. At times she does sound nice (like singing california king bed on american idol) but most of the time she sounds horrible. You shouldn’t be sounding horrible all of the time if you’re receiving proper vocal instruction. Maybe she doesn’t dedicate enough time to vocal exercise? Idk… but she’s just NOT vocalist.. plain and simple.

All he is trying to convey is that Rihanna has grown vocally and if haters can be honest they can admit that fact. Rihanna can more than hold her own vocally now. Obviously she will never be Celine Dion but she is becoming the best Rihanna she can possiby can be vocally.
Lets also not forget that Rihanna has 3 Grammys for her vocals and it doesnt get bigger than that so clearly the music industry respects and appreciates Rihannas vocal talents.

I think its going to take a lot and more than #1 hits for rihanna to get some real respect and recognition in the music industry. Im not sure if she can actually become more than the it girl of the moment. Rihanna has good songs like russian roulette and CKB that show off her vocal range and she has actually performed these good live. I think the fast songs she has trouble singing live cuz she moving around a lot on stage. But I don’t think that’s an excuse. She should sound better. But no one is perfect.
