Diana Ross To Receive Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award

Published: Thursday 22nd Dec 2011 by Sam

If she didn’t receive another award in her life, Diana Ross would still go down as one of music’s most iconic figures. It’s only fitting then, that if the diva’s honoured, it’s by the most prestigious award body – the Grammy’s.

And honoured Miss Ross will be on the 54th annual Grammy Awards ceremony in little over a month’s time.

Full story below…

The legend, whose career began in The Supremes before progressing into a wildly successful solo run (see: 18 #1’s), has been named as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. Ross, 67, will be recognised alongside Apple’s Steve Jobs and Glen  Campbell, for her contributions to the music industry at the February 12th event.

Congratulations are most certainly in order for the star, who is as renown for her success, as she is for the controversies surrounding how she sustained it (see: Berry Gordy, Dreamgirls, and Florence Ballard). In any case, it’s safe to say without the ‘Chain Reaction’ singer, the careers of Beyonce, Michael Jackson, among others, would have taken a very different path. So for that, and much more, we are thankful.

The 54th Grammy Awards airs live from Los Angeles on February 12th 2012.

    Diana deserves this honor and you are correct she was involved with 18 #1 singles 12 with the Supremes and 6 on her own and the life time acheivement grammy isn’t given every year

  2. Your mama December 22, 2011

    Her first grammy as a solo artist, lol. Tho she won 2 with the Supremes back in the day. So she has 3 grammys total and Beyaawwnce has 16??? WTF.

  3. Steffon December 22, 2011

    Great news. Brandy need to be apart of this

  4. YOOSONDALOOSE December 22, 2011

    Yes! She really deserves this! Go Diana!

  5. B Lamont December 22, 2011

    Yessss!!! I love Ms. Ross AKA The BOSS!!!!! Now I just need Janet to be part of this tribute, that would be the ultimate cuz there are so many similarities between them.

    BTW, Ms. Ross looks like Robin Givens in that pic..

    @YOUR MAMA, Beyaawwnce having 16 Grammy’s just goes to show how commercial the Grammy’s have become. Though it is still the most prestigious award in music, the caliber of winners has significantly decreased over the years. Back in the day, competition was stiff and Grammy’s weren’t given to any and everybody with a number 1 song…today, not so much. Though at times they still pull out some shockers. Also, Bey having that many has a lot to do with her daddy sitting on the board when he was her manager. Now that he isn’t, how many nominations did she get???? (And this last cd is wayyyy better than the previous two…IMO)

    Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS MS. ROSS!!!!!

  6. A December 22, 2011

    that photo is like seeing the Rihanna of the 70’s or something :D… s*** pic

    and congrats to her!

    “Her first grammy as a solo artist, lol. Tho she won 2 with the Supremes back in the day. So she has 3 grammys total and Beyaawwnce has 16??? WTF.”

    Stupid ho. The fact that Beyoncé has got 16 Grammys don’t make her the most talented singer of all time, it just shows that her competidores are basic b******. When Diana Ross was on her prime, the competition was way more harder. There were many successful and talented singers releasing classic albums and singles. Now, there are only a few really talented singers and dozens of label’s untalented puppets releasing generic songs. See the difference? Or do you think Grammy will give a “Best Vocals” for Rihanna, Britney, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Ciara? LOL! NO WAY! They can’t sing to save their lifes let alone to win an award. Grammy isn’t that crazy to give them a major award. They have a reputation, if they give them a major award, their reputation will get lower.

  8. Misfit December 22, 2011

    Long over due. I’m glad the Grammy’s will finally give “the Boss”, this accolade. 

  9. zania December 22, 2011

    I REALLY BELIEVE THAT THESE ARE WHITE PEOPLE COMMENTING ON THIS BLOG, IT REALLY IS BOTHERING ME THAT PEOPLE IS MAKING FUN OF A ICON WHO ONLY HAVE FEW GRAMMYS TO THESE SINGERS TODAY. ANYONE WITH ANY SENCE NEW THAT IS WAS HARD FOR BLACK FOLKS TO WIN ANYTHING IN THE 60’S, 70’S, WITH MARTIN LUTHER KING FIGHTING FOR OUR RIGHTS AND OUR LEGENDS SINGERS STILL BEING TREATED WITH NO RESPECT, COULDN’T USE THE SAME BATHROOMS AS WHITES. TO COMPARE BEYONCE OR ANY ARTIST TO THE REAL TALENT AND SINGERS FROM BACK IN THE DAY, IS REALLY DISRESPECTFUL. I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHY I COMMENTED ON THIS, VERY DISREPECTFUL FOR BLACK STRUGGLE AND WHAT THOSE ARTISTS HAD TO GO THROUGH FOR THIS NEW GENERATION OF BLACK ARTIST TO HAVE WHAT THEY HAVE.

  10. MISHKA December 22, 2011

    Took them long enough. That was some epic BS, dear Grammys.

  11. rob December 22, 2011

    that pic is shitting on h*** of today

  12. pat December 22, 2011

    LOOOOOOOOOOONG OVERDUE……now all we need is janet and mariah to do the tribute…EPIC!

  13. b**** please December 22, 2011

    Diana never had a grammy so this is an epic way of recieving it yet long over due though. I wish Brandy will be there too cuz she’s like a daughter to her. 🙂 🙂 🙂

  14. Twhist December 22, 2011

    The Queen of Soul has 19, so maybe the Grammys didn’t care much for her solo work as they did The Supremes…just saying

  15. JAKE (KING BEY, QUEEN ADELE = 21ST CENTURY TALENT + SOUL) December 22, 2011

    @GILBERTO

    YOU BETTER “F******” PREACH!!!

    WHEN DIANA “BOSS” WAS RELEASING ICONIC ALBUMS AND SINGLES OF THE 1970’S, WHO WAS THE COMPETITION:

    ELTON JOHN
    FLEETWOOD MAC
    STEVIE WONDER
    PATTI LABELLE
    GLADYS KNIGHT
    BILLY JOEL
    ARETHA FRANKLIN
    DOLLY PARTON
    EARTH, WIND AND FIRE
    SIMON AND GARFUNKEL
    (TO NAME A FEW)

    AND EVERY OTHER MUSICAL LEGEND OF THE 20TH CENTURY!!!

    BTW – THE PIC IS DELICIOUS!!!

  16. mobwife December 22, 2011

    I’m curious to see which non-black females they tap to do this tribute? Hopefully they will at least ask MJB seeing that “Fanny’ and now Jill Scott are boycotting the Grammy’s! I’m going to hold my breath in horror waiting for the announcement!! 🙂

  17. JAKE (KING BEY, QUEEN ADELE = 21ST CENTURY TALENT + SOUL) December 22, 2011

    @THWIST

    TRUE – BUT, IF YOU LOOK AT SAM’S COMMENT AND THE LIST OF CONTROVERSIES DIANA RECIEVED IN HER CAREER, ARETHA WAS STRICTLY SOUL/R&B AND HARDLY CROSSED OVER AND I THINK, AT THAT TIME, MOST BLACK AND WHITE PEOPLE LIKED THAT BECAUSE SHE WAS STAYING TRUE TO HER ROOTS…

    WHEREAS DIANA WAS POP/JAZZ/R&B/SOUL/QUIET STORM/DANCE/ADULT CONTEMPORARY/BLUES/POP-ROCK ETC…

    AND SO IT WAS HARDER TO DEFINE HER IN A SINGLE GENRE (IN 1960’S/70’S WORLD) – AND EVEN THOUGH SHE BROKE MUSICAL BARRIERS, PEOPLE STILL COMPLAINED THAT SHE WASN’T BLACK ENOUGH – BOTH BLACK AND WHITE PEOPLE, SO THE GRAMMY COMITEE PROBABLY FOUND IT HARDER TO STAPLE HER!!!

  18. Ok December 22, 2011

    I hope they do a tribute and let ciara do a song again. She did good wen she tributed her way back!! I know she will kill it now they way her voice has grown to be better!!!

  19. Jasmine December 22, 2011

    They should have been gave her a grammy. I guess back in the day Barry Gordy was only paying for radio play but did not pay for her awards.

    The music industry is controlled by an even smaller cluster of corporations today. In a minute one mega-corp will have complete control of the industry. Back in the day however, there was some competition and people had to work and earn awards. Diana was up against, Aretha, Natlie Cole, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, Stephanie Mills, Phylis Hyman, Martha Revees, Patiie, etc. They had true competition back then. Now, anyone can purchase music online (artist, record labels, fans etc.). Any award show or music chart anywhere in the world can be manipulated its sad to say!

  21. Tru Voice December 22, 2011

    Well it’s about time!!! Even though she was a b*tch back in the day to her group members and Patti LaBelle. But Congrats nonetheless!

  22. Royalkev December 22, 2011

    About damn time!!! This was long overdue. The academy is finally getting it right, it just took a few decades. Still, better late than never. Diana was before my time, but I’m so infatuated with her. Her solo music was so timeless that many of her songs would still be hits today (Upside Down, I’m Coming Out, Muscles). She reminds me of my fav (or perhaps my fav reminds me of her). I’d love for King B to make her return after giving birth to honor such a living legend. It would be great for her to sing a classic or two. 🙂 That moment would be so iconic. Next year is really going to return us back to what the foundation of music is all about … talent! I can feel it. I’m counting on it.

    P.S. I hope Whitney’s next.

  24. clickedgilm December 22, 2011

    Yes Diana!!!! That pic.
    She deserves it omg….
    If there was no Diana
    There would be no Micheal,Janet,Beyonc,Jackson 5.
    The truth of the matter is she really was the first Black Pop Star….
    Everything after that pales in comparison.
    Also damn why every post someone gotta mention beyonce ?
    This an Diana most.
    Take your hating asses off plz and thanks

  25. swagg December 22, 2011

    I agree with everyone that says its really not fair to compare today grammy winners with yesterdays especially if they r black being that blacks were still fighting rights back then do you think that they where rushing to give us awards when they didnt want us in the same rooms with them a couple decades before the 60’s black singers couldnt even be on their album covers they would replace them with white singers what kind of advantage do u think they had..and the talent level has went waaaay down even from the 90’s so when u got non-singing h*** compared to a good one (not super iconic vocally talking about bey) then of course they will get the nods before horrible vocalist like rih or ci or keri

  26. Royalkev December 22, 2011

    @ Jake

    Thankyou for breaking it down. This was beyond insightful and right on the money!!! Diana had alot of struggles on both ends… hmmm, reminds me of a certain SheBeast in the industry today. Anyway, that’s just too much to go into for this post. Again, glad to see Diana getting her just due.

    Gon head Diana. You never where the best singer you still where a diva in your prime

  28. commanderofthedancefloor December 22, 2011

    @GILBERTO

    then why is rihanna nominated for best vocal categories, she hasn’t won any yet but to still be nominated must mean the grammys believe she has vocals. enough said

  29. swagg December 22, 2011

    and btw since nobody can have a post without comparisons anyone who wants to compare her grammies received can argue that she slays Bey in the category of # 1’s so have that !…it may take alot to get nominated but its even better when ppl are requesting your music and buying it better than a group of ppl voting on what they think ( the grammy committee)

  30. Jaiyah December 22, 2011

    I hope they get Brandy to do a tribute to Diana since they worked together on Double Platinum. They both had great chemistry while working on the set. While another female artist was trying to imitate and steal Ms. Ross style, Ms. Brandy was working upclose and personal with the main Supreme herself. You don’t get it no better than that!

  31. Jaiyah December 22, 2011

    I hope they get Brandy to do a tribute!

  32. Yellow Gorillah December 22, 2011

    They Took Their Time =/

  33. MichaelAngelo December 22, 2011

    The amount of awards she received is a non M F factor. Diana ,along with the Supremes and Motown ,changed the game point blank period. they created a totally new sound and visual that is still recycled today. congratulations to The Boss!

  34. Keith December 22, 2011

    LONG OVERDUE…Hopefully, Janet will be tapped to do the verbal tribute and present the award. Other singers (without bombast) can do the musical tribute….NO CONTEMPORARY POP SINGER WOULD HAVE A CAREER WITHOUT DIANA’ s success so that should be easy.

  35. bey’knight December 22, 2011

    omg here we go again. what has Beyonce’s grammys got to do with Diana being overlooked during her prime. was Bey releasing music same time as her? evrybody jsut wants Bey name on their lips. go ‘head, hopefully it makes u feel better about your life.

  36. Onyx December 22, 2011

    If i was her, i don’t accept, because the Grammys are like the Oscar, never give the award to the artist who really deserve it. This woman should have more than 16 Grammys, I hope the artists who have never won a grammy, someday they give this special award to them, People like J.Lo, Britney Spears have one but she is part of Pop Culture. Awards like the Oscar and the Grammys abused of their power, making artists really work hard for an award, but never acknowledge the effort of the artist, you will see when Beyonce make “A Star is Born” she will have 2 Oscar for the Soundtrack and for her Interpretation, but Judy Garland doesn’t won nothing for her role in the movie in 1954 and guess what the movie won a lots Oscar. I don’t believe that this awards make the artists, i believe their work make then a good Actor or Singer, Marlon Brando is the best Actor of all times and he reject the award, James Dean receive a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, is stupid nominate it for a posthumously award somebody, because even after death you’re going to win. You can win 100 Grammys and still is in the people the last word, Example: Britney has 1 Grammy, Beyonce has 16 Grammy, but Britney is gonna be remembered as a Cultural Icon for Generations to come just like Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Janet Jackson ect….while Beyonce not. is all in the Person, the Artist, not in the many awards they have.

  37. Royalkev December 22, 2011

    @Bey’Knight

    You have to remember that people bring Bey up because of her first hit 20 years ago, 632-5792 (which she recorded at 10). The video’s on youtube. So this is why she’s spoken of in different eras.

    … Leave to my friend to pinpoint a simple truth. Just like you, I find the mention of Beyonce’s grammy’s perplexing. I said it before and it’s so true, Beyonce gets compared to people throughout decades of music ( 90’s, 80’s, 70’s and 60’s). I’ve never seen people so desperate to tear down 1 artist. Why can’t this just be a positive post about the tons of women that were influenced by Diana? It’s like people are on a mission to convince themselves of something and in doing so nothing is more obvious than their insecurities. Of course, we’ll only be called silly Bey fans for defending her , while everybody have a field day with a subject matter that’s not related, what so ever to the topic at hand. Think Diana, Diana, Diana people! Geez

    http://www.thepagewithroyalkev.b*******.com

  38. JohnVidal December 22, 2011

    @onyx
    You make no sense! I don´t agree with beyonce having 16 grammys and you all know it. But how is it that britney deserves to have those many for you? Becoming a supposed “icon” for being a teenage sensation, dancing and then not even that doesn´t equal good music or vocals, which is what grammys are here for, FOR TALENT!!!
    Anyway, I´m glad they are going to do this with Diana. But this award didn´t exist till now right???

  39. Spunkypoop December 22, 2011

    Children pahleaseee! Do we really want to see Beyonce give a tribute to Miss. Ross? Defanantly, not me! Yes Beyonce adores her and admired her or excuse me reverenced her very essence and beauty in the hit movie “Dreamgirls.” I am tired of Beyonce being listed to do everybodie’s tributes.

  40. Onyx December 22, 2011

    @JohnVidal
    call it what you want, some people goes famous for nothing, Britney Spears was a t*** sensation but with a good Pop Music unlike these days T*** Pop Music, Yes! i believe she deserve more Grammys, talent is something that any one could have, know how to cook is a talent, so Britney Spears is very talented, Beyonce is very Talented too but to me she is overrated, theres a lots artists out there with so much talent and amazing voices.

  41. JohnVidal December 22, 2011

    @onyx
    Of course there are, only that Britney Spears is not one of them. Please!
    And yeah I also think Beyonce is so overrated

  42. Onyx December 22, 2011

    i respect your opinion

  43. JER December 22, 2011

    Everybody whos dissing Beyonce needs to stfu. Beyonce deseverd those 16 grammys. Unlike Britney who cant sing for s***.

  46. Morgan December 22, 2011

    Everyone whos dissing Beyonce can stfu! Dont be mad because Bey got 16 grammys and your fav Britney got 1. Maybe she have more talent.

  47. Morgan December 22, 2011

    Btw im a new poster to this site. Im a bey stan also. And I support all bey stants to. So make way for a new bee apart of the hive.

  48. BitchPlease December 22, 2011

    Yes for this and Mariah being awarded at BET Honors but I’m still waiting on that Janet Jackson tribute..COME on BET AWARDS JANET JACKSON for Lifetime Achievement Award..

  49. bey’knight December 23, 2011

    @onyx

    according toi yopur logic rebecca black and bieber should also get 16 grammys too cus they’re part of pop culture right? since when did grammys ever be about “pop culture icons” Christina won best new artist over Britney cus she’s d better artist evn though Brit is more popular and has sold more and thats the way it should be. if anyone is overrated its Britney, she cant sing yet she has sold so much records, she’s supposed to be a singer, entertainer yet she cant dance anymore and lipsynchs every concert. reviews for her shows are always mixed so dont call Bey overrated to defend Britney.

    u say Bey will get to oscars for ASIB soundtrack, is Judy Garland known for her singing? its a genuine question cus i dont know much about her. you’re really bias when it comes to Bey im afraid to say but i wouldnt call u a hater. U at least present your points respectably

    @Royalkev

    couldnt agree more. Bey is the yardstick

    THIS RIGHT HERE! 🙂

    I think Janet Jackson will be the next in-line to receive this honor. She’s been on her grind since the tender age of 5 (FIVE)! Janet’s tribute and Life Time Achievement Awards are well over do! IMO

  52. Onyx December 23, 2011

    @bey’knight
    Please! Justin Bieber is s***, at leats Britney have a good producer with her to make good Pop T*** Music, the other girl you mention, sorry i don’t know who is she, Judy Garland sing one of the most classy songs of all times singing cover by a lots artists “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” but she was famous for being an Actress not a Singer, but she did a great job in the film, Beyonce is a Singer, to me a really bad Actress, but she’s gonna do well because of her voice, i’m not a hater but C’mon Taylor Sw.. has more Grammy’s than Britney and her Music is not good as Britney’s Music is, in the other hand, i have always say Beyonce is very talented but in my Eyes, she doesn’t impress me cuz i don’t think what she does on stage, in her albums or her vocals are that impressive as the medias or her fans say, i think the same of Britney too.

  53. SuperStar75 December 26, 2011

    Congratulations to Miss Diana Ross! Contrary to popular belief, this is Miss Ross’ first and only GRAMMY AWARD. She has been in the game for over 50 years but has never won…not even with the Supremes. She can now add this Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award to her list of other honors including: Tony and Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination (1972, Lady Sings the Blues). She has also won numerous American Music awards and America’s highest award for the arts, The Kennedy Center Honors.

    I must agree that she is the first black female POP STAR and the blueprint for so many of today’s female artists including Whitney Houston, Madonna, Janet, Beyonce, who in my humble opinion, has a career that is very similar to Ms. Ross…

    I hate to dissapoint you all but this particular part of the Grammy’s will not be televised, so there will probably be no tributes…However, they will acknowledge these honorees during the show.

    Once again, this is such a long overdue Tribute for someone who has given so much to music and the world of entertainment. Looking forward to Feb. 2012!

  54. billy “Ross” December 28, 2011

    I respectfully disagree.Due to the status of Miss Ross,and the fact that this is her FIRST grammy,she will definitely be honored during prime time.The question is really moot..after all….this IS MISS DIANA ROSS!!!!! She will walk out to the grand adulation of the crowd basking in the long overdue warmth that should have been bestowed YEARS AND YEARS AGO!! If not,I’m personally walking to LALA Land to personally give them a piece of my mine…and I guarantee…they will utterly regret that decision.LOVE ME SOME ROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

  55. TivoliEclipse January 4, 2012

    It is about time! What a monumental oversight! The incomparable Ms. Diana Ross is the Boss — period! Her iconography, and her status in the Ballroom (or the Big Room — where exit signs are clearly marked) does not require apologies, explanations, or justification. She is it. She ‘got’ legs — long legs!

    That the music industry did not ‘grace’ her with Grammys was not about talent, or competition, genre, category, money, or pay-offs. It was un-pure politics!

    Alas, Ms. Ross is too much of a lady to tell the Grammys where to shove that award! She was slighted, but it does not define who she is and what she’s done for the industry and her poly-psycho-macro-micro-sociological impact on the 20th Century. Comparing ‘talent’ to The Boss is ridiculous. Not ridiculous in a dull sense, ridiculous like irrational, uninformed and frankly uninspired.

    PS: When she’s gone — work will cease, hearts will stop and tears will tilt the earth — so savor the tribute (and there better be a tribute). You don’t mention Diana Ross — The Boss unless you plan on showing love — on a grand scale.

  56. Mr. X January 26, 2012

    I see Miss Diana Ross today in a complete other perspective as in the last century.

    But I’m really happy (and I mean that) for Miss Diana Ross for getting the Grammy Lifetime Archievement Award in 2012. There is no other artist outthere, who deserve this award so much as she. She’s a true music legend with a big talent.
