R&B’s modest maestro Trey Songz has taken yet another opportunity to report unsubstantiated claims toot his own horn in a recent interview with our friends over at ThisIsRnB. Already self-proclaiming that he raps better than most rappers, the ‘Bottoms Up’ singer is now looking to stir up a bit more conversation with talks of his stead in today’s R&B. Speaking on a number of topics, including his two releases in the last month as well his next studio LP ‘Chapter 5’, the young crooner is looking to demonstrate his “growth and maturity” in forthcoming efforts.

It would’ve been better if Trey said he has the POTENTIAL to become the Cornerstone of R&B. He makes great music, but he needs to finish paying his dues, and remain consistent in his discography. If he keeps this attitude up, his career is going to fall right before his eyes.

All Trey is is the male version of Keyshia Cole. His music is boring, he’s dorky and has little image — but pretends to. They’ve been trying to blow Trey up for years now, and when they couldn’t do it they started PRETENDING like they had. Like someone said, Trey gets the little attention he does simply because the playground is not that crowded right now. NeYo and Usher sold out to white/dance/pop music for a white/dance/pop audience…Chris Brown is trying to reinvent himself, but has no idea how…and the now middle-aged R. Kelly hasn’t come out with a decent song in over a decade and has become a parody of himself. That leaves Trey as the default choice. Soon as somebody with a stronger image and personality comes out doing what he does, it’ll be over for him.

Miguel is one of the better r&b artists out as far as what Trey is saying goes. Trey has some good r&b songs but he needs not to get carried away. R.Kelly’s last album was great to also.

He is the only male R&B singer who is going Gold and above w/o going Pop. How is Miguel doing better than him? His album still didn’t go Gold. And so what if Trey’s album didn’t go Plat? It sold over 800k, and Chris Brown’s FAME has still not touched 800k yet in the US. Chris isn’t going Plat either nowadays. Where is Frank Ocean’s album? He’s had mixtapes only.
The only male R&B singer going platinum right now is Usher, and he does a lot of crossover/pop music.
Trey comes off as very cocky, but I don’t think he was trying to be. But this site loves to hate on him. Still bitter I see.

Ppl are going in on Trigger..LOL and I don’t blame you. I will say this, when he makes a hit it’s really a hit: “Usual”, “Wonder Woman”, “Does She Know” & “I Gotta Go”. I actually still listen to these songs. I like what someone above said, “Trey is the male Keyshia Cole”. I think you hit on something with that comment!
I appreciate Trey for not going pop, but he is not all that. He makes great s** music though, and I really would love for R&B to come back. But Chris Brown is miles ahead of him, I just wish Chris would stop with the pop.

I try to root for him because he is from VA and he is such good friends with my fave, but it’s hard to when he says stuff like this! I like a lot of his music, especially his mixtapes, some of them, and I think his albums are good it’s just he comes off so cocky. He is one of the most popular and successful male r&b artist out right now but I can definitely see how people would be turned off by him. He seems to toot his own horn and lot and that can come off very arrogant. He may be very ‘confident’ in himself, but he comes off VERY arrogant in his interviews.
Plus that whole lil ‘mini’ beef with R Kelly didn’ help either. SMH.
I’ll continue to root for him and support him, to a certain extent, but now that CB is back in full force (Chris has a lot of dope records from his upcoming FORTUNE album, not to mention his features with other artist) I really wonder if Trey is really gonna be able to compete. I know there is room for more than one artist of a specific genre at a time, but I guess we shall see. *shrugs*

First off Trey Songz last album has been out for OVER a year! It came out LAST November and is STILL not platinum, whereas FAME has been out for 9 months. TRUST, FAME is going platinum before ‘P,P,P’. Trey’s sales aren’t bad for an r&b album but Chris is clearly still out selling him and Chris is the one who had a scandal that damn near ended his career! It’s understandable that Chris sales haven’t reached platinum because he lost some of his audience back in 2009! Even when Trey snuck in and got some shine, Chris came back 10x harder and snatched his crown right back!
Cut the B******* with Chris releasing every single from FAME because he did NOT! There are 17 songs on FAME and he only released 6 singles. ‘Beautiful People’ and ‘Next 2 You’ were NOT released as singles and weren’t released to radio!
The fact of the matter is Chris is the one who is performing at and getting recognition at major Award shows! Chris is the one being nominated for and winning awards. Chris is the one who already has 2 multiplatinum albums under his belt (Chris Brown, Exclusive). Chris is the one headlining his own tour selling out 20k arenas. Chris is the one with 11 Grammy nominations compared to Trey’s….what…3? I mean what is there left to say? Even though Graffiti flopped, for obvious reason, it still got a Grammy nomination even after Trey took over that year. Not to mention Trey still got snubbed this year.
So the fact of the matter is YES, Chris is doing MUCH better than Trey! POINT, BLACK, PERIOD! Chris ALWAYS comes out on top when being compared to Trey! That is just the TRUTH!

First off Chris HAS reinvented himself! You’d have to be a fool not to see it!
You can’t tell me you don’t see the difference in his music since his came on the scene, or even the in the past couple of years! Every since 2009 he has given us a different side of him. He is singing about s** a lot more, cursing a lot more, doing a lot more dance/pop songs, hell he is even rapping now! Dude got a Grammy nomination for a rap song?! Did anyone see that coming a couple years ago from an r&b/pop singer? NO! He stays switching his style up!
Chris has done a complete 180 from the dude singing ‘Yo, Excuse Me Miss’ when he first came out in 2005! He took a risk with his sound and pushed his already damaged image to the limit with his new material and it paid off! Yeah he may have done some ‘generic’ s*** like with ‘Yeah 3x’ or pushed the ‘s** sells’ thing a bit far with ‘No BS’ & ‘Wet the Bed’ but you gotta admit he was NOT doing this sounds a couple of years ago, yet it has been very successful for him!
Regardless whether or not YOU are a fan of his new sound, he was able to successfully re invent himself as an artist.
Furthermore, ‘R Kelly hasn’t come out with a decent song in over a decade’?!?! What in the hell have you been smoking?! Or have you just been MIA for the past 10 years? Hello, what about ‘Chocalate Factory’?!?! That came out in 2003 so that has been in the past 10 years and it was one of his biggest albums of his career! It spawned serval huge hits (I.E. ‘Step in the Name of Love’ & ‘Ignition’) and earned him a Grammy!
Not to mention R Kelly’s has several Grammy nominations in the past couple of years including one for his last two albums and his single “Radio Message’ . R Kelly may not be as hot as he was years ago and we may not here his songs on the radio as much as these younger artist but he is still very much in the game.
