Much to the delight of those in favor of Pop belle Rihanna, last night saw her pick up the ‘Favorite R&B Female‘ at the 2012 People’s Choice Awards.
However, as is the case with most things linked to the performer, her win has been overshadowed by criticism from those who claim that she shouldn’t have been nominated in that category in the first place, seeing as her music is widely regarded as being of the Pop persuasion.

Hell no! Rihanna is POP singer! When she wins pop I have NO problem b/c that’s what she is. Just b/c an artist plays around or dips into a genre does not make them an artist of that genre. There are artist who dip into different genres to make their music reach worldwide, just demographically speaking. For example, Lil Wayne has done an entire rock album, but is that nigga a rock artist HELL NO! I would say she was more R&B/Reggae when she came out but now, she’s pop and does some R&B songs from time to time. She’s a great pop artist that dips her feet in different pools of music but at the end of the day, she is a POP artist! People say don’t box her into that category but when her ass is on the cover of Vogue, GQ, Glamour and other magazines being called Pop star, icon, or what have you nobody says nothing. So I would definitely say that award definitely should’ve went to someone is R&B!

Just because some of her songs is R & B, doesn’t make her R & B artist, none of her songs this past year was in the top 10 on the R & B chart. I think Beyonce is R & B and her music just crosses over to pop. They run Beyonce on the hip hop station. They put Beyonce in all those pop category, which Rihanna should’ve been in those category and Beyonce did nothing on the pop charts, Beyonce hit the top 10 R &B charts twice from her album. This might sound off, but I think Demi won that award over Rihanna and Lady GAga because neither attend and I think they wanted to give her something because she performed for them. I am pretty sure that the navy went hard for Rihanna in that field. I just doesn’t like these awards shows any more too much politics.

Rihannas music do get played on urban radio. You day one gets played on my station here in the Atlanta and they’ve even throne in a few minutes of wfl into a mix. I find that many radio stations be it pop or urban do support Rihanna. She’s just loved all the way around. I’m not mad at her getting love from everywhere. If they want to nominate her for all genres. Its all good with me. But on the real. This has more to do with the politics of America where pop has always been seen as white. So now that RI RI is the only black female dominating in that category, I think they are a little scared of her walking away with the award and snatching pop away following the white girls. So to be on the safe side and give her her just deserves, they stck her in the r&b category.

That category was based on mainstream popularity, because Bruno Mars and Rihanna isn’t R & B and they can’t keep nominating Usher when he didn’t have an album out last year. Did the grammys put Rihanna in the R & B field, no they didn’t. Chris Brown, R Kelly, Beyonce, Miguel, Trey songz are the top R & B artist of the year. I don’t even know why Neyo was nominated his album flopped, I think they nominated him because they recognize who he is. The 5 artist I named had at least two or more top R & B songs off their albums.

Here’s the thing, Rihanna’s music incorporates so many different genres. It’s so many under one umbrella when it comes down to her “artistry”. She’s similar to Beyonce and has model her career after her. She does some R&B, Pop, a little Rock, Dance(which Bey hasn’t really tapped into) and Raggae. The difference between her and Bey is that Bey isn’t always doing different styles of music when it’s trendy. Rihanna follows every music craze to fit in. She plays follow the leader. So, I kind of laugh when people make her this big pop(only) act. Madonna and Janet do pop in their music (90% of the time). Bey, Rih and maybe Ciara now do more Pop/R&B. There’s actually a compliment in what I’m stating about Rih.

The Navy is some dumb motherfuckers. The R&B award was not about her old albums/ songs. They are talking about Rihanna recent ones. PCA calling LOUD & TTT R&B which I know Rihanna & her label don’t want that title because she is POP. What the PCA’s are telling you that POP was mostly for the whites, There are other artist that are R&B but do some POP but they do more R&B than POP so that makes them R&B artists.
Hay I remember the Navy saying that no one is checking for R&B. Funny now R&B is so important because it’s Rihanna. I bet Katy,GAGA, Ke$ha are laughing their asses off seeing Rihanna in R&B Category again like the Navy would say R&B is for hood rats LMFAO. Welcome to the club Rihanna #1 hood rat hahaha

people get your shit together, rihanna didn’t even start out as r&b she started with dancehall, and reggae. know your facts!!!!!!!! she then went into pop and r&b, then to dance.
she is versitile so i classify her as pop because that is genre she keeps coming back to.

Rihanna however produced some R&B songs+included R&B elements.When I first heard Man Down,I thought it was a POP song,but songs like Rehab,and Photographs have ELEMENTS of R&B included in them.
Also,a while back,There WERE certain Rihanna stans who were throwing shade at this genre of music saying it wasn’t going to be shit,et.al. If you don’t think she’s R&B,you don’t think she’s R&B.DON’T try to flip the script after you let your thoughts out and pull something out…..

Modern R&B does NOT mean rhythm and blues, it basically just means music of black origin, the Grammys get it right as they have two categories – one for modern R&B and one for original R&B (think Chuck Berry, Little Richard, songs like Maybelline, Johnny be Good etc). So, sometimes Rihanna is R&B in the sense of singing music of black origin (Rude Boy is the first one that springs to mind) and sometimes she is a pure pop act. Peoples Choice is a crappy awards show anyway, she didn’t even bother to turn up and I don’t blame her ;o)

Her music is defined as either urban R&B, aka rude boy, umbrella, pon de replay, etc and electronic r&b aka only girl in the world, we found love, don’t stop the music, etc. So what do you call “Turn me on” – David Guetta and Nicky Minaj = Electronic R&B w/rap. What do you call Flo Rida – Electronic Hip Hop or Hip House. What do you call Pitball w/Chris Brown – International Love. It is Latin Electro Hip hop w/R&B infusion. There is other music besides Urban Hip Hop and Urban R&B. Learn to diversify your musical interests. No wonder Hot 97′s ratings are in the toilet.

I am happy for her success but she is NOT R&B, … Many white award shows only give awards in this category to Rihanna, Alicia, and Beyonce because they are ignorant of most black music…. they only know the cross over acts like Mariah, Bwyonce, Janet, etc… Mary J didnt win a grammy until the Breakthrough… ridiculous.
It is one thing for the WHITE award shows to do this but it is really upsetting when the BLACK awards shows give awards to Beyonce and Rihanna instead of REAL R&B singers like Fantasia, Keyshia Cole, Monica, and Jill Scott.
