Jessie J Dances To #1 With ‘Domino’

Published: Sunday 15th Jan 2012 by Sam

While 2011 was breakout year for Pop force Jessie J, 2012 looks set to cement that success and then some.

For, in a unique feat, ‘Domino’ – the 6th single from the singer’s debut set ‘Who You Are’ – has hit the top spot.

Full story below…

Nine weeks prior to its physical release, the Dr Luke produced cut has soared to the coveted #1 spot on the UK’s Official Singles Chart.

In a testament to J’s growing international presence, the track’s success isn’t confined to here in the UK alone. ‘Domino’ serves as her highest charting US single to date; thus far peaking at #17 and climbing on the Hot 100 and being certified Gold by the RIAA for sales of over 500,000.

Congrats are most certainly in order for the Essex belter.

Yes, the song may be a Katy Perry rehash. And, yes, there are a multitude of better cuts on her album. However, what the success of this track does is open the doors for more creative freedom moving forward. Success and longevity boils down to how well one “plays the game”, something J clearly knows given how well she’s playing it (see: Jessie two years ago  – Jessie now). And, for that, we’re not mad at her.

It’s just refreshing to see actual talent getting their props. More power to her.

Your thoughts?

SORRY , CLAUDE KELLY ONE OF ‘DOMINO’ SONGWRITERS WROTE ON HIS BLOG THAT IT IS NOT A KATY PERRY REHASH BUT A STRONG WHITNEY HOUSTON INFLUENCED TRACK.
    READ HIS BLOG ABOUT IT.

when Dr. Luke, Jessie J, and I sat down in our favorite studio again for the first time in months, we were faced with one problem…how do we let the world see just how damn amazing Jessie is.
by the end of that session we had “Domino”.
When you have a singer with the range, and depth that Jessie has, the obstacle is finding ways of showing that off on a pop song without making it so flashy and complicated that people cant sing along.
We imagined that Clive Davis probably struggled with the same obstacles when trying to introduce Whitney Houston to the world. he figured it out, masterfully.
so…early Whitney Houston records is where we looked for inspiration.
WE PLAYED THIS SONG (very loudly):

i’ve heard & read a lot of comparisons to Katy Perry. flattering? yes…she’s a current pop machine. Accurate? eh, maybe. music is subjective. people hear what they hear. and Dr. Luke is the mastermind behind a lot of her hits too.
But the TRUTH? the inspiration “for Domino” was early Whitney Houston. she’s an icon, and one of Jessie’s & my favorite artists…and 1 of the best places to go for inspiration.

  6. TB January 15, 2012

Wtf is top comment all about…she is from essex! She’s from the same place as Jesy Nelson from LilMix….congrats jesy anyway

  7. TruthTeller January 15, 2012

So I guess the UK charts exist again?
    LMAO!

  8. B January 15, 2012

@TB she’s not from essex, the place her and jesy nelson are from is actually part of greater east london, both in london boroughs, not even in the county of essex and hasn’t been since 1965!

  9. zed January 15, 2012

its number 1 weeks before its offiicial release because u can actually download it duh! with radio stations playing it and it being avaiable to download from her repackged album, people would obviously download it now rather than waiting for it in February! sometimes authors on this site say the most silliest things!

  10. TinaMinaj January 15, 2012

Wow always had a soft spot for this song but never thought it would do so well. Anyway good for her. Hopefully can replace a talent-less act there.

  11. TinaMinaj January 15, 2012

@zed go hate some place else.

  12. Yellow Gorillah January 15, 2012

Awwww that’s cute…. it sounds waaaay to much like Katy Perry for me though.

  13. Those That Cannot Do, Stan January 15, 2012

Aww congrats to her and yes the Whitney Houston vibe is strong on this song but we all know Sam’s kinda clueless about music. All he knows is hate and pettiness. Katy Perry re-hash…that says it all, eye roll.

  14. commanderofthedancefloor January 15, 2012

hahaha now uk counts??? @sam pick one like i said before you cant have your cake and eat it too!!

good to see she is performing well i dont like the song because the melody is too much like last friday night. but i started paying attention to her since she came out with do it like a dude early last year! which was a song she origibally wrote for rihanna!!

  15. LTM January 15, 2012

congrats to Jesse and her Last Friday Night 2.0 song

  16. scars January 15, 2012

    hit 2012

  17. I’ma have to send her to her maker January 15, 2012

I wasn’t a fan of the song at first at all but I must say congrats to Miss Jessie J. She certainly snatched katy’s wig with this song because it sounded like a katy perry song dead on but with better singing.

On a side note, I just wanna tell Bey Knight, the gal always wit a stick up her ass on this blog, to TAKE THAT. Came up here shadiing jessie j saying adele was better with her boring ass 2 octave range. She may slay on the billboard but it looks like miss j wasn’t a let down after all. Haha, so shut up you stupid h**.

  18. I’ma have to send her to her maker January 15, 2012

Oh and jessie j can sing circles around adele anyway. Don’t believe me youtube jessie j singing live. Her imbellishments, runs, range is very impressive over Adelephant.

  19. Katy+GaGa=Queen January 16, 2012

Flop b**** needs to stop biting Katys sound and swagger

  20. Saetana January 16, 2012

Oh come on, I’m no Adele fan, its not my kind of music (I make an exception for Rolling in the Deep), but there is no way Jessie is a better singer than her – Jessie’s live singing is variable to say the least and she has a tendency to get shouty (although at least she doesn’t seem to suffer from nerves like Adele). Saying which, I do like most of Jessie’s stuff, a breath of fresh air on the UK pop scene, only heard Domino for the first time earlier today and I definitely like it and it didn’t remind me of Last Friday Night, thank f***!

  21. riri January 16, 2012

Adele and Jessie are completely different to each other!

Jessie J killed her own song during her ex factor performance!

  22. Saetana January 16, 2012

They may be completely different but they are both up for the same award, that therefore gives a basis for comparison ;o)

  23. riri January 16, 2012

    @Saetana point taken!

I also think if her next album is anything like her first then she is finished!

  24. Saetana January 16, 2012

Ouch! I haven’t actually heard the album, just the singles from it, some are good but they didn’t really give me the urge to stream the rest of it, she has a reasonable enough voice but I think a whole album would be a bit too much of it ;o)

  25. number1k9 January 17, 2012

This song was MOST definitely made to sound current and similar to Dr. Luke’s current body of work/current smash hits.

And who has Dr. Luke been creating smash hits with time and time again. Guess who? KATY PERRY. IDK this song was def made to sound like a cut from her ‘Teenage Dream’ album. And it wouldn’t surprise me if the beat was one Katy didn’t use and Luke reworked it for Jessie.

Song is catchy, but it gives 95/100 ppl the Katy vibe, and maybe 5/100 if you’re lucky, a Whitney vibe.

    CONGRATS, #9 US iTunes!
