Madonna: “Lady GaGa’s ‘Born This Way’ Is A Remake Of My ‘Express Yourself’

Published: Thursday 12th Jan 2012 by David

Upon the release of Lady GaGa‘s  upbeat anthem ‘Born This Way’, the songbird found herself coming under heavy fire  from many critics who suggested that the number was a direct ‘rip off’ of Madonna‘s iconic jam, ‘Express Yourself‘.

Now, almost a year after ‘Born‘s release, the Pop icon has shared her opinion on the track, an opinion which may just make life very awkward for mutual Interscope boss, Jimmy Iovine and any associated with both ladies.

Her comments below…

Speaking to The Daily Beasts Jacob Bernstein on the song, Ms. ‘Take A Bow’ explained:

I thought, this is a wonderful way to redo my song (‘Express Yourself’). I mean, I recognized the chord changes. I thought it was…interesting.

While we are all for Madonna and her impact on Pop culture, we find it oh-so funny that she is accusing GaGa of ‘swagger jacking’ her when the first few years of her very own career were spent avoiding claims that she had ‘bitten’ Cher and Cyndi Lauper.

Even if Germanotta did indeed take the concept of ‘Express’ to create ‘Born’, petty remarks such as these overshadow the positive impact both tracks have made both on the charts and the day to day lives of their respective fan bases.

Either way, only time will tell if Madonna’s upcoming interview with Cynthia McFadden will see her share more damning views on her younger counterpart.

Your thoughts?

  3. DanityKiWi January 12, 2012

    Shade! The Queen Of Pop.

  6. JJFAN1814 January 12, 2012

Almost all artists these days swaggerjack for ideas.

Gaga, Beyonce, Nicki, Rihanna……Nothing wrong cause each of these ladies pull it off and make it more successful than the original.

I’m so glad Janet has originality though, along with Alicia Keys.

    Anyways, f*** Grandonna.

we’ll see how the gaga fans react to this. i feel madonna is right n if u think otherwise, ur just in denial. nothing rude was said here, just said what every1 else outside of gaga’s stan base was thinking/saying besides a few ppl. it is the same chords, just different lyrics n message. i think if lady gaga admitted to being influienced by madonna with the melody n structure of the song, it would of came n went, BUT bc she went on to say whitney was my main inspiration n try soo hard to distance herself from anthing madonna, it back fired hard. even her chore os very madonna esq n laurie ann made it know that she was inspired by madonna past stuff while creating gaga’s presnt stuff

Oh come on BTW obviously had the same beat as express yourself and Madonna is not a hater for pointing that out. And both songs had the same message of accepting yourself.

No matter where Madonna’s career is now or how she got there she is a music legend and it’s really pathetic that fans try to place new comers over the pioneers.

When Gaga is in the industry for 20 years and has an Emmy then you can compare the two.

where u when the song came out the world knew she stole the song style gaga lied on ellen that she recived an e-mail from madonnas e-mail that she had her support. But madonnas team said she was lying

Madonna my dear. Don’t let your title go to your head. They are two completely different songs. Don’t stoop down and leech off Lady GaGa’s fame.

Sometimes it’s hard to except the fact that we’re getting older. You were great in your day and a master at publicity, but Gaga has a way better voice and message.

  12. AmbeRussell January 12, 2012

cant be mad at madonna for knowing the melody n chords of her own song. be mad at gaga for acting like it was something new. . madonna just calling it as she heard it n she heard express yourself.

o n madonna maybe old(we all get old) n not making music(she has a catelog most would die to have 1/2 of) but she is here, still standing for a reason so any1 wanna call her irrlevant can go suck a monkeys nipple bc she has changed music since her break n does not need to release another material of music bc her past creations speak for themselves. n the sames goes for janet n them other chicks. i dont see nobody saying s*** when diana ross releases an album that doesnt do well or aretha, but if janet or madonna do twice the sales of those 2, it still isnt good enough. anyways, them 4 are all living legends who used inspiration n creativity to become who they were n still are today n their names n music is still being said n heard for a reason. so go a head n diss madonna for speaking THE TRUTH, but doesnt change the fact that those songs are structured extremely similar n that she has accomplished more so much more than 90% of the musicians out toda in her career. just saying…

  15. Bey’knight January 12, 2012

I dont think Madge was petty at all. She said wat evrrones speculated since the song was released n she’s a legend, she has no business mincing words. My only issue. Why has all her buzz bn surrounded by her younger counterparts, Lady Gaga, Britney. Her formula these days is so pathetic, puttin Nicki on a track, doing a whole album w/ Timbaland n JT. Could she be more transparent?

  16. WHUT January 12, 2012

    OOPS!! SNATCHED!!! KIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!

  17. HaterzStayPressed January 12, 2012

Wigs and clothes and styles can be ripped off, it is an unfortunate part of the industry. But when you rip off songs watch out! Song writing and publishing are the foundation of the of the music business! Madonna could sue Lady Ga Ga and get part of that copyright if not all plus damages if she chose to sue. I would suggest in the future the young lady watch it. There are folks in this business you don’t p*** off and Madonna is one of them. The industry insiders know that if there was a lawsuit Ga Ga would lose.

    • Qweenie May 31, 2012

Not if I was a juror. Madona is great at publicity but Gaga has the tallent although she should cut the crap cause she doesn’t need it with that f****** incredible voice. Madona sounds “reductive” compared to Gaga.

  18. Tami January 12, 2012

Its true. Born this way is a mix between express yourself and vogue’s instrumentals. You would have to be deaf not to hear it.

    • Qweenie May 31, 2012

Yeah, and the Kinks, “Thats what I Like about You” ripped off Neal Diamond’s “Cherry, Cherry”. It happens all the time, yeah-yeah.

  19. ITAINTYOBABY January 12, 2012

Madonna just stated the obvious so why are all these Gaga fans pressed, everyone knows Gaga swagger jacks just like Madonna swagger jack Express Yourself from the Staple Sisters

  21. RDK January 12, 2012

i remember an interview with kim when she complimented Gaga saying she saw some of her self in here,in the way she dress and everyone was like she was just complimenting gaga right kim fans rationalize the situation and it was killed and forgotten,so now madge do the same thing here complimented Gaga all of you wants to go in on her man f-ck yall a set of Bias f-cks…..and sam twisted it and is making sure this turn in to a mass stan war…over something it,s not.

CLEARLY MADONNA WAS MORE OF THE S*** THAN LADY GAGA AND SHE STILL LOOKS TWICE AS BETTER

  26. MsThing485 January 12, 2012

Madonna was just telling the truth. If that were me and Gaga hijacked MY song, I would be A LOT more blunt about the thievery than that. F*** shade, I would straight BLAST the b**** for it. Gaga is nothing but a reheated Madonna for a generation of idiots born after 1995 who don’t know any better. Yeah yeah everyone has their influences, inspirations and such, but Gaga is totally overwhelmed by her idols and brings nothing NEW or uniquely HER to the table. In short, she has no personality and is more like a robot programmed by the past than her own star.

  27. HaterzStayPressed January 12, 2012

Supposedly, T-boz from TLC said that the song takes chords from the hit song Waterfalls as well. If this true, it is only a matter of time before this girl gets nailed. Beyonce gets scrutinized for nearly everything she puts out. But Gagaloo is blantant regarding her borrowing and gets hailed as a genius. No shade, just an observation.

  28. CALL ME HATERRRRRRRRRRRRRR January 12, 2012

“EXPRESS”- “IF YOU WANT IT RIGHT NOW, MAKE HIM SHOW YOU HOW”

“BORN”- “YOUR BEAUTIFUL IN …..GOD MAKES NO MISTAKES”

    SOUNDS ALOT FAMILIAR TO ME

  29. CALL ME HATERRRRRRRRRRRRRR January 12, 2012

THIS IS DEFINITELY THE DECADE OF IMITATION, YOU GOT THE RIHANNAS, AND NICKI MINAJ’S, AND LADY GAGAS AND DRAKES AND S***

  30. CALL ME HATERRRRRRRRRRRRRR January 12, 2012

IT EVEN SOUNDS LIKE LADY GAGA IS TALKING LIKE MADONNA, OH WOW…PEOPLE ARE REALLY IGNORING THE “GREATS” WHEN THEY CALLING THESE NEW PEOPLE OUT

    O WOW

  31. Mike January 12, 2012

Of course the sound alike. BTW is speed up a little but the chord progression and melody are the same. There are mash-ups of the 2 songs going together perfectly. And the Staple Singers song and Express Yourself have nothing in common aside from a similar lyric while BTW and Express Yourself SOUND alike. Madonna is 100% correct.

  32. KELIS January 12, 2012

GO MADONNA ! SHE CALLED HER OUT !
i Knew Madonna preferred Britney over gaga hahaha

  33. Lady Gaga: The Supreme Incarnate of Pop January 12, 2012

Everyone knows Madonna is THE QUEEN OF THIEVES! Girl has never once had an original moment. All her “iconic” moments were tings she stole from other people.

    – “Vogue,” a rip off of McLaren’s “Deep In Vogue.” Song and video, EVERYTHING.

    – “Frozen,” stolen from a German artist.

    – “Hung Up,” is basically a reworking of ABBA’s Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight).

    – “Justify My Love,” she STOLE the lyrics from a poem written by Ingrid Chavez, Prince’s Protege, and the beat from Public Enemy. She was sued and LOST and had to pay millions.

Hey if I was as old and haggard and battered as her, I’d make this a shady attempt to take Gaga’s fanbse too. But please, we all know her next album is going to tank and flop harder than Hard Candy and American Life. Haha.

She still wishes that at her age she had HALF of Gaga’s raw talent as a SINGER and songwriter.

  34. Queen Size January 12, 2012

This isn’t the first time Gaga copied Madonna. Born This Way is the frosting on the cake. Gaga was dope on her first album. She was the s***. Don’t know what happened. Her and Nicki are one in the same.

  35. Xadax January 12, 2012

Ugh Delsuional Monsters (Yes, that includes you Sam). Quit rationalizing, her Madgesty is speaking truthfully – she ain’t no plastic like you or your Caca.

  36. B. Hill January 12, 2012

I think people are tired of pretending that Gaga is great and now the ax is coming down on her head. BTW failed to live up to full commercial expectation, didn’t sell as much as THE FAME, was upstaged by 21 and then “Marry the Night” flopped. Now this. Can we say “backlash”?

    Ha.

But Madonna is right, “Born This Way” almost plagiarizes “Express Yourself.” It wouldn’t be so bad if Gaga just ADMITTED it, but the b**** tried to act like everybody was crazy for pointing it out. So I guess everyone is wrong? LOL

  37. onyx January 12, 2012

Typical Answer from her, very Madonna.

  38. Lady Gaga: The Supreme Incarnate of Pop January 12, 2012

Haha and I love this more press for Gaga.

Look what your interviews have turned into. Discussion forums for and about Gaga. Haha if this doesn’t show the power of Gaga and her impact on culture, that such an iconic performer as Madonna is being nagged about Gaga on HER OWN interview, than I don’t know what does. Haha.

Madonna, huntee I feel bad for you when Gaga releases her next album. Which I’m sure, due to the not-so-hot-commercial response to her BTW songs, will have massive hits-to-be.

Gaga is making are turn to her hit-making roots. So beware girl. Do something else instead of constantly trying to win over this younger generation. They belong to Gaga. Go clean up after the disaster of your movie W.E. or whatever it’s called. Haha.

Long live Gaga, The NEW Queen of Pop. Haha! (“)(“)

  39. Mafalo January 12, 2012

Gaga has spent her entire career copying Madonna letter for letter. She’s like a robotic version of her. BTW was just par for the course. I’m glad that the tide has turned and more and more people are “over” her. Gaga is totally useless.

  40. onyx January 12, 2012

Gaga has been transforming into Madonna since the days of THE FAME MONSTER listen to Dance in the Dark, she has morphed into Madonna on this track.

  41. onyx January 12, 2012

I like to call her Printer Gaga or Lady Printer (which you think fits best for her?)

  42. Paul January 12, 2012

nearly a year later and we’re still talking about born this way comparisions

  43. Vandrea January 12, 2012

Isn’t this what people have been saying for a whole year though? That “Born This Way” was a bite off of “Express Yourself?” *shrugs* All Madonna did was say what most people seem to think. Gaga ain’t slick and everybody knows what she did. Meh. Whatever. IMO Madonna’s song is better.

  44. Jansel January 12, 2012

I LOVE Madonna but when a b**** can’t grasp the idea that EVERYTHING in this vast universe has a begining and and end it’s time to check-in for some phsycho theraphy. She had her time and she was (still is) one of the best recording artists. But B**** YOU’RE NOT THE ONLY BEING IN THE UNIVERSE!!!! Feel proud if anyone should want to follow your steps… it means you’re doing a great job… don’t attack or critisise them. There said!

    Sincerely,

    A Fan. 🙂

  45. onyx January 12, 2012

@Lady Gaga: The Supreme Incarnate of Pop
Long live Gaga, The NEW Queen of Pop

Do you copy that from me, i always say that Long Live The Queen of Pop ect, i guess the little monster has learn that from her mother.

  46. onyx January 12, 2012

Now thats a slap in da face….but done with class …love Madonna..AKA GOD

  47. B. Hill January 12, 2012

    “LADY GAGA
Behind the ludicrous and attention-seeking Halloween costumes, the obnoxiously overblown music videos, the swagger jacking of Madonna’s personality, and the conspicuous plot to manipulate the socially awkward and misfits of society into thinking that they have a voice (and are empowered) through her, is a bunch of banal and contrived gibberish heavily propped by media hype that does not live up to it. What began as a bouncy, pixyish, one-woman-show-esque version of what the Spice Girls did in the late 90s has now become an egotistical, overproduced–yet still oddly generic–mess of grating sounds that is irritating to listen to and takes itself too seriously.

Once upon a time this character that is ‘Lady Gaga’ may have provided a cheeky and quirky contrast to what had been the model of what was popular, and it may have been quasi-endearing, but when pop stars infuse that much camp into their image, at a certain point the irony *will* get old and lose its charm. In the meantime, this woman has literally crammed about a decades worth of gimmicks, put-on’s and media saturation into a three year span. We have seen her show up kite high, in meat dresses, with horns attached to her head, dressed as a man, with discharged gay soldiers as her escorts, etc., etc. The ‘shtick’ is old. There are only so many heavy-handed stunts you can use to dumbfound the public into noticing before they become either hostile or jaded, and a backlash ensues.

Lady Gaga has always been a ‘character’ for show, but she has become a caricature and a parody of herself. No longer is it “refreshing,” abstract or inventive; it is now tired and dated. Overexposure is killing the cat and quite frankly Gaga is losing her relevance. By making herself into such a sneaky little cartoon who is force-fed to the public in obscene dosages, she has backed herself into a corner. The only thing left for her to do at this point is to throw on a pair of jeans and act normal, but how boring would that be for someone who named herself ‘Lady Gaga’ and made being strange her ticket to fame? She was here; she dominated the world of music and got her press, but the milk is now sour. The writing was on the wall when dowdily dressed and anything-but-flashy Adele c*** blocked what was supposed to be a Gaga-dominating 2011. Kids do not listen to her, it is not “cool” to be a walking freak show…and quite frankly it is not cool to like Lady Gaga now.”

  48. SLAYFANISTANN. January 12, 2012

I actually agree with your commentary here this time,Sam.

People always throw Gaga under the bus for “copying” but they never look at their own fave’s dirty laundry.Marilyn Monroe and Guy Bourdin should be examples.

I have NO qualms with Madonna being the queen of pop.I have problems with people who want to throw the book at Gaga YET act as if Madonna was the most original of them all.

People create straw man arguments on why they dislike Gaga, sometimes.

  49. morgat January 12, 2012

    it’s over !!!
    we want ORIGINAL MADONNA!!!
    don’t wanna copycat !!

  51. Ren January 12, 2012

Gaga is rush rerecording a new album because BORN THIS WAY didn’t perform as well as they wanted it to. It’s not the music (even though it’s awful) it’s her. People are tired of her.

  52. onyx January 12, 2012

People love a good diva-off and Madonna never fails to disappoint, hahahah i love that B****.

  53. LTM January 12, 2012

I must say, Madonna, Christina, and Keri are the queens of shade, I love it!!

@Lady Gaga: The Supreme Incarnate of Pop
sweetheart please, your fave will forever be stuck in the shadow of Madonna. and lets not with Gaga’s songwritting skills

  54. LTM January 12, 2012

the only reason people go in on Gaga for copying so much is because the media and critics wont. they call it “similar” or “inspired from”. she gets praise for Born this Way, Judas, Alejandro, etc even though they are obvious rip offs. but the media is quick to attack Christina for biting styles with Not Myself Tonight or Rihanna for her music videos.

  55. Edgy_Timeless January 12, 2012

Oo Madge need to stop.. like really. All for attention. This is Y Janet will always be above this b****. She know damn well wat she doing, by comparing herself to Ga Ga now.

  56. NaQu January 12, 2012

^ Janet is doing Weight Watchers commercials. She’s not above anybody.

  57. 0123 January 12, 2012

What was Madonna supposed to do when asked? Pretend she hadn’t notice that this pathetic freak show wannabe hadn’t jacked her song? Please. Madonna should have sued her ass.

  58. SLAYFANISTANN. January 12, 2012

    Copying Accusations-

What seemed to be used occasionally a few years ago has become rampant:The accusations that X is copying Y.These copying accusations have become overused, rudimenary, and just plain useless (just another good reason why society is on it’s way to degrading itself IMO).Back then, people would enjoy the music for only entertainment purposes, and not necessarily for who is copying who.Fast forward to the 2010s decade and you have Gaga stans arguing with Christina stans, and Madonna stans arguing with Gaga stans, etc. over something ridiculous such as attire from a photo shoot that does not exactly look the same. These occurrences have become so BLOWN OUT OF PROPORTION that people as old as 40 years of age argue about minor similarities with someone as young as 12 years of age.The irony about all of this is theat people have gone as far as to generalize one’s stanbase as a certain age (usually a young age at that) when they themselves resort to tactics a five year old will use as means of play.
To encourage,or “egg on” the demise of someone else’s career is also unnecessary. If you do not like someone as an artist, that is your business, but do not copy and paste someone else’s opinion from a rather irrelevant blog and expect it to be truthful. One flop single does NOT guarantee that a star’s career will be ending. Also,it is the business of Madonna and her people if she wants to sue,NOT her Non-receptive fans/stans. (The only thing the songs have in common is the Chord Progression, and the fact that both use semi-gospel like voices.Other than that, the similarity is just not there)
To conclude this comment, which some of you may criticize as “being incoherent,or all over the place,The people who use terms such as “Madonna Copycat” as a reason to loathe/insult MISS Stefani Germanotta, really need some growing up to do because you are acting in a manner that is no better than the Gaga stans you tend to throw shade at.

  59. DRB January 12, 2012

Why does she need to stop? Gaga needs to be glad she didn’t get sued. She blatantly rips her off, lies about Madonna playing along via email and acts like she’s the savior of music.

  60. Forever Animal January 12, 2012

Well no duh BTW is similar to EY, anyone with ears cant tell. But Madonna should expect this. She is the Queen of Pop, every girl is going to take something from her book. I think GaGa should do GaGa and stay away from anything Madonna related. The more she does these things, the farther in Madonna’s shadow she goes. These comparisons arent helping her and she definately doesnt need them now with the lack luster commercial performance of the BTW album+singles

  62. Katy+GaGa=Queens January 12, 2012

If Madonna truely cared she would have said something last year when the song came out and this was a hot topic, not a year later when everyone hs moved on. She’s only bringing it up now because she is planning her return. Sorry Madge, but that single with Nicki and M.I.A will flop. If you want a hit and a successful comeback you should kiss GaGa and Katy’s ass like you did with Britney and Xtina and do a song with them.

  63. LTM January 12, 2012

    @SLAYFANISTANN.
dead!!! Big Bird isnt to bad at shading, the problem is she has no fans to back her up when she gets dragged for it lol

She’s such an easy target too which makes this funnier…

Christina has loyal fans. Madonna has loyal fans. Keri…..err…ummm..oh.

  69. Those That Cannot Do, Stan January 12, 2012

Just said what everyone thinks. Gaga really lost a huge part of her fanbase this go around and little by little she’s losing more and more fans. We all knew eventually even Madonna would grow tired of sugarcoating it and speak the truth.

I think Madonna thought it was cute at first but then got tired of Gaga being her #1 Stan.

As for Gaga and the fans…no one gives a f***. All that mother monster nonsense makes them sound like a damn cult of losers. If they can’t even make her singles hit the tops whats Madonna got to be scared of anymore.

Drag her, diss her, mock her…she’s got 30 years in the game and her hands in every medium. She’ll be here long after Gaga fades. Seems like Madonna was laying low till she got back in the music game…it’s bout to be interesting huh? Lol

  70. onyx January 12, 2012

Anyway i like Gaga, i really do, i’m a fan of her too but i’m not call myself a little monster, my problem is that she pretends to be better or unique, like we are never seen something shocking or outrageous, i mean if you want to see something scary, take a look to Marilyn Manson he really was a badass in hes days but the people gets tired of him, Gaga pretends to be a shock, is just a blatant lie,cuz she is no even closer of what i call a MONSTER no even Madonna, just to be clear, she has to changed the outrageous things and comeback to be normal but i do no want her to change her Musical direction cuz i thing it’s only gets bettter, i have nothing bad to say about that. The Fame was good but The Fame Monster was Better and Born This Way is Great, so far my favorite female album of 2011, of course Madonna comes first but i really like her, its just that some little monsters act like music has never exist before Gaga and it is when i get angry cuz most of the little monster believe Gaga is the only singer in the world, i know Madonna is a bad B**** but i love her for that, one thing you can’t deny is that she is the most influential female musician of all times, you like it or not, She’s just as relevant today as when she debuted, no matter what you say about her collaborations with young artists, she always make her present. Goodbye B****** have a good night, and don’t forget without this old b**** no one of your b****** would be here today except for those who are in another direction like Adele, Alicia Keys ect…. but Rihanna, Britney, Christina, Katy, Gaga, Kylie, Beyonce ect… are here because of her….kisses.

@Those, I’m sorry- I’m going to have to disagree. There’s NO denying that Gaga has some cult like fans (side eyes this –>http://atrl.net/forums/showthread.php?t=164060 ) but,not all of us seem that crazy, especially when there’s a chance that some of these people who call her fanbase a cult still believe in the Illuminati.

If the QUEEN says, then it is so… All the little pressed children can run back to their corners sucking on gaga’s sweaty toes. Born This Way was a cheap rip off of Express Yourself, while blatantly exploiting the gay community with superficial lyrics of pride to make cash. DEAL.

  76. Those That Cannot Do, Stan January 12, 2012

No doubt Gaga has some cult-like fans but I think the spotlight is on them these days. I also don’t think it’s all her fans. But I do think things are changing. I remember once Gaga was rather untouchable in the media but lately there’s been too much negative focus on them to attack Madonna. Gaga just apologized for the Adele thing, you know the media would love to spotlight on the newer singers fans trying to destroy her idol.

  77. Rihanna Stans = Broke Navy January 12, 2012

OLDdonna has no business talking about swagger jacking, when she has the most lawsuits for copyright infringement in history. Nothing abut her work is original, she’s been stealing and copying for most of her career and not giving credit. She’s simply mad and bothered that Gaga is far talented than her . OLDonna has a history of being catty and jealous of female singer she sees as a threat(i.e Mariah Carey in the 90s)

  80. irene46 January 13, 2012

    @ haterzstaypressed..

i didn’t know t-boz came at gaga about it but the first time i heard ‘born this way’ the ‘waterfall’ cords totally assaulted my ears.

the video with bey and gaga as sorta thelma and louise characters reeelly mirrors the madonna look.

  81. Heh January 13, 2012

Gaga should have come out more original. It’s all well and good to be inspired by those who came before you and to incorporate some of what they did into your own ideas…but Gaga has no ideas of her own, and that’s the problem. She’s a giant costume and swagger-jack. And that’s the difference between Madonna and her. Madonna’s got a personality, attitude and swag that’s 100% her own. Whatever idea she may have taken from others she rearranges and presents with her own attitude and style all over it. In short, Madonna may take a recipe from a cookbook, but she cooks it herself. Gaga just looks in the freezer for s*** already cooked to defrost in the microwave and then serves it to an ignorant fan base that’s too young to know any better and too shallow/stubborn to care. Behind those ridiculous customs and silly pandering to gays, Gaga is colorless and empty. She has no personality and her swag is fake. And that’s why she’s wack.

That being said, “Born This Way” was an indirect bite off of “Express Yourself.”

  82. Anne January 13, 2012

“Petty”–are you kidding? Her song was completely ripped off! There’s nothing petty about that. Also, I don’t remember any sound claims of Madonna ripping off Cyndi Lauper or Cher. Madonna came on the scene before Cyndi Lauper. The first Madonna video that I remember was “Borderline” and before that she had “Holiday” and “Everybody” and then “Lucky Star”. All of these videos were groundbreaking and came before “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” I honestly don’t see any comparison with Cher. Anyway, Madonna was asked what she thought about Gaga’s song and has every right to give her honest opinion.

How the f*** was her comment “petty?” Considering how Madonna SHOULD HAVE slammed her for making “Born This Way” too close to “Express Yourself,” her comments were downright cordial. TGJ is just on Gaga’s nuts and have been for a good minute. Methinks you’re in cahoots with Gaga’s people to constantly lick her ass. Since Madonna was restrained in her comments, I’ll be a b**** for her and say that Gaga is a motherfucking copycat b**** with no shred of originality and her music is silly, overproduced crap that’s full of itself. In short, I hate the b****. IMO she ruined popular music with all this ridiculous ass “electro” crap that she ushered in. Give me pre-2008 over the last 4 years any f****** day of the week. If Gaga was on fire, I wouldn’t spit on the b****. That’s what Madonna SHOULD have said…

  89. Saetana January 13, 2012

Sigh, I really didn’t think Madonna would stoop to this – a part of the chorus of Born This Way uses the same CHORD PROGRESSION as Express Yourself, its hardly unusual for this to happen in music and its not usually deliberate. I could barely hear the similarities and the songs are certainly not about the same subject – Madonna’s Express Yourself (not one of her better songs in my opinion so why would Gaga want to copy it?) was about female empowerment, Born This Way is about loving yourself and is a song for EVERYBODY not just women! She just makes herself look jealous of Gaga’s massive popularity and is fueling the ongoing stan wars like the b**** she is.

Well, the proof of the pudding and all that, let’s see how Madonna’s new album does against Gaga’s, if that single is anything to go by then I’m not optimistic unfortunately :o(

  90. Saetana January 13, 2012

Unfortunately it seems most commenters on here either have very short memories or are too young to remember when Madonna first arrived on the scene (Debbie Harry anyone? – for those who do remember). Madonna copied or, if you like, was inspired by loads of people and never gave credit for it so why the f*** should Gaga? All music is recycled and has been since the eighties. For those who think Gaga doesn’t have a trademark sound of her own (not that she needs one), how about Poker Face, Bad Romance and Judas, the stuttering lyrics are her trademark if we wish to attach one to a star who fearlessly mixes music genres and was brave enough not to stick with the type of song that got her a break in the first place – Born This Way is a far better album than The Fame, Gaga is not short of fans, and she is a far better live singer than Madonna. Also, Madonna was never known as a kookie fashion icon, how the f*** people can keep on comparing them I have no idea. Well, actually I do, they are both blonde (dyed or wigs I might add) and Italian American, way-f******-hay. Madonna has earned her crown, Gaga (or any of the current batch) haven’t been around long enough – yet – but, if she doesn’t burn out from overwork, I can see Gaga taking the title in the years ahead. And, no, I’m not a f****** litlte monster ;o)

  91. Wizard January 13, 2012

Madonna pulling a lil kim lmaooooo tryna get buzz for the new album still love Madge

  92. Pop Royalty (The BeYhive) January 13, 2012

Actually I saw this one coming !!

and I feel embarrassed to be in this post. like Madonna , you are so late with this one
But after a second thought , I guess this is a part of your promo strategy 😉 , smart !

and what u said above was … Interesting ! if gaga is remaking your music then u re-made careers. and I’m one of your stans.

but I know gays gonna love it. they love watching How to shade : DIVAS edition all the time.

    It’s cool still. 🙂
Madonna is calm. and gaga will be ” pissed off” !
and I think Madonna was ” pissed off” when gaga teamed up with ” CHER” and the other has-been woman ” cyndi something 😡 ”
and this moment of ” CHER , can u hold my Purse ?! ” at the VMA’s and Cher agreed and even said yes to making a duet with her after that . which mean more support from the gays !
and Madonna can be cool with anything but taking her gays away from her 😆 😆

Again , this is CHER 😯 !!! and this is GAGA ! the voice of gays of nowadays !! can u imagine @Sam ?!

I’m sure Madonna didn’t like this mess !! and that s*** pissed her off.

So all in all , it’s a game between old divas and they use younger artists like ” GAGA” and ” Justin bieber ” ( for MC) while in the game. 😡

    Game of relevancy.

so both ” gaga” and ” Madonna ” are pissed off by now. let alone press and Stan wars and the other s***** stuffs.

But after all , the most important question at the moment is :

will this do the job and create a buzz for her madonna’s new album ?! will this make Madonna ” MORE” relevant than she really is ?!

    We will see …

  93. Royalkev January 13, 2012

I knew it from day one. BTW is a carbon copy of EY. I didn’t ever in my life see such a shameful act done so boldly before. Gaga was the ONLY one that could get away witht his BS! That’s why I’m so happy to see that Madonna choose to speak her mind. Lady Gaga deserve everything she’s getting right now. I still see right through Madonna’s plan to stir up trouble and hype before the album drop(but this one had to be done).

  94. Absolved January 13, 2012

    Sorry Saetana, but no cigar.

Madonna and Debbie Harry are completely different in music, sound, temperament and overall style. There’s not a single Madonna song that sounds even remotely reminiscent of Debbie/Blondie. The only thing they ever had in common is hair color and maybe a loose comparison of “risque” outfits, but even that wasn’t all that similar. The only reason anyone would compare the two is because Madonna sort of preceded Debbie on MTV as that blond siren…but, again, their respective works and the personality they each bring are night and day. Spin again with that one.

As far as “Born This Way” and “Express Yourself” go, while I do hear a faint similarity, I would agree that the comparisons are exaggerated as far as the songs themselves go (although the obvious inspiration isn’t)…however…Gaga brought it on herself. BTW was not the first time she not so covertly “borrowed” (copied) from Madonna. Hell the single before BTW was “Alejandro” and the video for it screamed Madonna (and even the Latin pop undertone of the song seemed reminiscent of something Madonna had done/would do.) There are about a dozen other little tidbits that Gaga has thrown out that were taken directly from Madonna’s playbook. After a while they begin to add up. As someone else said, BTW was just the culmination of it all. Had those other instances not happened prior, and had Gaga not created this image of herself as such a Madonna-imitator , people probably wouldn’t make such a big deal out of BTW sounding vaguely similar to EY.

As far as the rest of what you said goes…meh. “Poker Face” wasn’t at all original; it sounded like something Britney or Christina would do. While I hesitate to give credit to Gaga for showing a rare sign of originality with “Bad Romance,” and while “Judas” made a poor attempt to play on it, from what I’ve heard the majority of Gaga’s music doesn’t sound like it, but rather cheap rehashes of 80’s pop new wave with mid 90’s Euro beats and tempos–so, yes, others were justified in saying that Gaga doesn’t have a unique sound/style of her own. Just about everything she does is “inspired by” something that came before her that anyone over the age of 25 should recognize.

As far as fan bases and album sales go. Another meh. Madonna’s next album most likely won’t shatter any sales records; but neither will Gaga’s. Madonna, though, has had numerous albums with skyrocket sales…has broken records far beyond anything in Gaga’s grasp, and therefore is allowed modest sales at this stage in her career. With only 2 albums, Gaga hasn’t proven herself to be more than a fad (more on that later. :))

Born This Way was touted to be the “Album of the Decade” and it’s clear that everyone in her camp meticulously plotted for her to rule 2011…then came Adele and 21, which made Gaga seem kind of “silly” in comparison. When the smoke cleared Born This Way (despite how over-saturated in way promotional wise) not only failed to rule the music world last year, or get acclaimed as the album of the decade, but it also actually sold *less* than The Fame (interesting tidbit, Madonna’s first 3 albums each outsold the one before it…and each outsold Gaga’s comparatively.) The only 2 songs from this era that had any real lifespan were the title track (thanks largely in part to the EY controversy) and “Edge of Glory.” “Judas” and “You and I” sort of came and went, despite how their overblown videos suggested that she hoped they’d be bigger…and “Marry the Night” bombed. So what can we deduce from that? Yeah, Gaga may still have her hardcore stans, but she’s not the “It”-girl she was in 2009-2010. It appears she is losing a number of casual fans and doesn’t seem to be making any new ones. For someone who is still early in her career, that’s happening kind of soon. From what I can tell a storm cloud of public apathy and cynicism hovering over Gaga’s name these days, which leads me to believe that her prospects for (commercial) longevity is questionable. She’ll be around, I’m sure, but a pop queen she won’t be.

While Gaga may have tried to emulate Madonna’s persona and career, in the end she’s looking more akin to something like The Spice Girls or Backstreet Boys; more a 3-4 year overhyped fad that eventually passes than a mainstay. I can tell you one thing, at this rate Gaga won’t ever sell 300 million+ records the way Madonna did, therefore she will never take her “title.”

  95. Saetana January 13, 2012

@Absolved – I phrased that badly about Debbie Harry, what I meant was without Debbie Harry there would have been no Madonna, I didn’t mean to imply that they sounded the same. However, it is just as silly for you to compare Adele with Gaga, Adele is an Adult Contemporary artist not a pop singer, her music is so far removed from artists like Gaga and Madonna that the comparison makes no sense at all – Adele has enjoyed massive crossover success, which is very rare.

I wouldn’t be too sure about Gaga not selling as many records as Madonna (do you mean albums there or singles and albums by the way?) if she proves to have longevity. Peoplel tend to forget that Gaga is far more than just a singer – she is singer/songwriter/musician/fashion icon and performance artist all rolled into one, can’t recall Madonna being known for anything other than catchy pop tunes and for being the queen of reinvention, her greatest talent in my opinion and where I think she will fall down this time. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not wishing she will fail but, if the first single is anything to judge by, she has made a mistake this time.

Gaga has the 2nd biggest selling album WORLDWIDE (not just in the US which far too many people seem to take as an indicator of what the rest of us are listening to – yeah right) for 2011, coming second only to Adele’s massive hit album 21 which came out earlier than Born This Way. I’m not saying Gaga will end up selling as many of BTW as Adele’s 21, Adele has a far wider market with her innocuous sound, but I’d hardly call Gaga a fad, she just hasn’t done as well with the singles this time around, some of which is due to poor release strategy.

By the way, stans make up a tiny percentage of an artist’s sales, the rest is made up of FANS and the wider pop buying public, just for your information ;o)

  96. KAT DELUNA FAN January 13, 2012

    Did she lie?

Thiefy Gaga is a fraud. She stole Kat whole sound then act like she is a genuis 😕 😕

  97. JP January 13, 2012

Clearly, Madonna’s song is the better of the two. Express Yourself is a class.

Lady Gaga is just overrated and hasn’t really done much to justify all the praise she receives when her act has yet to stand the test of time.

  98. B Lamont January 13, 2012

Madonna was just telling the TRUTH! It’s instantly recognizable as Express Yourself, even if GaGa wants to still claim that she was “thinking of Whitney Houston” when she made the song. Have no idea how they are even related topics. Maybe she meant Madonna cuz there is no way Whitney has anything to do with it…lol

  99. Bey Fan… January 13, 2012

I like donna….but anyone born in the 80’s and up on pop culture knows that Madonna has been “inspired” by artists , more times than beyonce gets inspired by youtube. (I love my girl bey…lol)

Im not gonna agree or disagree with Madonna. I just don’t want her to throw stones living in a………. well you know the rest.

  100. Dunk January 13, 2012

Correction TGJ Madonna had records out at exactly the same time as Cyndi Lauper she did not swagger jack her at al!!! If you know anything about Madonna you’ll know that she used to walk around with ripped and torn leotards that were pinned together cos she was a dancer and she had no money, this became her fashion and look as she lived in NY people that she looked dope, when she did her first video she had that look and then the whole world thought it was iconic and original, plus its a well known fact that in the 80’s Madonna hated cyndi lauper and Cher sp please get your facts right! Madonna’s main influences were david Bowie and Blondie, and it’s one thing to have a simular look to an artist but another to ripp off there song! the chords in Born This way are a direct ripp off from Express Yourself, gaga is obsessed with that song so much so that even in Bad Romance her look and choreagraphy is very simular to the live performance of Express Yourself, she is a hardcore Madonna fan and thats totally cool but, the fact is she ripped off that song!

  101. linker nippel January 13, 2012

Madonna has been there and done that and better

She is nothing like Debbie harry
She is nothing like Cyndi Lauper

Yes she coopted the styles of legendary blondes such as Marilyn and Marlene Dietrich but she made her interpretations ICONIC

Gags is just a gimmick now *starts playing Vogue*

  103. Those That Cannot Do, Stan January 13, 2012

    @Absolved

That was one of the most intelligent and well written things I’ve seen on this board. Lots of good points and yes there is something in the air that suggests public favor is turning against Gaga. I dare say Madonna is being so honest because she can sense it as well.

  104. josh January 13, 2012

I don’t blame gaga fans for being mad but she is a rip off…JustSaying

  105. OrgoMego January 13, 2012

Don’t see why she’s trying to throw shade. Gaga did an interview (I believe on Leno or Letterman) where she clearly stated that Madonna had given her blessing to Born This Way….not sure why anyone was ever pretended it wasn’t a remake (just a different way of doing it)

  106. mel January 13, 2012

Gaga always stated she Loves Madonna, Madonna even stated that she loves gaga and Born this Way reminded her of her song. BUT now since her album is coming out, madonna has a problem?

Clearly Gaga is copying BUT she doesn’t disrespects her like Nicki minaj is Lil Kim, Minaj Want to be kim so bad, doing the exact poses on pictures, copying styles.

  107. YOOSONDALOOSE January 13, 2012

LOL SHE IS OWNING! Still love Gaga but Madonna is owning

  108. JohnVidal January 13, 2012

Sorry but madonna is pressed! Way too pressed when she doesn´t need to. Someone needs to remind her her whole image for the her first eras was a copy from Marilyn Monroe. Yes she is the queen of pop and Gaga is following her steps, but i think it was time for someone to bring what Gaga brought to musical industry nowadays. Also, Madonna has lipped her whole career except for a few accoustic shows and Gaga always sings live, not to mention she actually sings great and madonna doesn´t. Still, no shade to madonna, she is one of the 4 biggest females ever

  109. arob January 13, 2012

Funny since now that she will be releasing a album, she wants to address these things.

  110. ThatBoyLuke January 15, 2012

IDGAF if Madonna mentions it a year later or a decade later, we all know what she said is true and if she’d taken Gaga to court the h** would have been paying the Queen royalties as well as homage.

  111. Saetana January 15, 2012

@THATBOYLUKE – If Madonna really thought that Born This Way was a ripoff of Express Yourself she would have sued Gaga like a shot, Madonna is more than familiar with this type of lawsuit as she has been on the receiving end of plenty of them during her career. Again, trying to drum this into people’s thick heads – BOTH SONGS USE THE SAME CHORD PROGRESSION, mainly in the chorus, Madonna does not own chord progressions and this particular one is a typical 1970’s (Madonna was not around then) disco staple, Gaga cannot steal from Madonna what does not belong to Madonna in the first place! When Gaga does acoustic and acapella versions of this song its damn well obvious that the similarities to Express Yourself are small and superficial as you can’t even hear it when she strips it down.

I’ll give Madonna one thing, the woman certainly knows how to create publicity for herself and get people talking, something she badly needs with the long break she has taken from the music business. I wouldn’t have been so bothered about her snide remark if it wasn’t for the fact that Gaga only ever has good things to say about her, and any other female singer come to that. It makes Madonna look like the b**** she is. Saying which, I’m looking forward to hearing her new stuff, can the queen of reinvention pull it off again?

  112. RavenRaven March 1, 2012

I grew up listening to Madonna, and back in the day I liked her music, but honestly people, she cannot f*****g sing or dance her way out of a paper bag if she, I’ll keep my fingers crossed, happened to get stuck in one.
Madonna’s videos are lame, she cannot sing live, her voice is weak and puny, her music style is so very passe, and her arrogance is beyond ridiculous.
To be miffed and claiming GaGa is copying her music is almost as lame as Madonna’s music, singing and dancing abilities.
Check out this link, this link contains photos of the long, long list of famous women’s looks and styles that Madonna has copied throughout her wayyyyy toooo long career.
    http://www.aishamusic.com/lawsuit_many_artists_madonna_stole_from.htm
Madonna is an ego-maniac, who’s time has come and gone, and it is time that she retires her Borderline sagging ass, picks up some new hobbies, like knitting and crochet, and leaves the pop music industry to the young people.
I mean seriously, she looks ridiculous trying to keep up with an amazingly talented young woman such as GaGa.
GaGa has an incredible voice, she can dance circles around Madonna, probably blindfolded, and she’s not an ego-maniac like Madonna.
All artists borrow from one another, this is an age old practice.
If someone were to ask me who GaGa reminds me of, I’d say Marylin Manson and David Bowie.
Gaga is unique in that she is obviously influenced by several music icons, but she has her own individual style that shines through in all of her performances.
Madonna is just yapping her sagging jaw, and accusing GaGa of stealing her music, because the truth is…Madonna is beyond afraid of losing her long standing position as queen of pop music.
Get real Madonna, and accept that you’re a talentless, manipulative business woman, who understood how to market your talentless ass to the gullible masses, and made a name for yourself in the music industry.
Sweep it over Madonna, shut your yapper, and let the real talent shine.
