This week’s From The Vault video comes courtesy of the Spice Girls.
Released in October 2000 as the first single from ‘Forever’ their first and final album as a quartet (following the departure of ‘Ginger Spice’ Geri Halliwell), ‘Holler’ was yet another #1 UK hit for the ladies.
It, however, never reached the doors of the Billboard Hot 100, which was a first for a Spice single.
‘Holler’ and the ‘Forever’ era, more wholly, represented a double-edged sword of sorts for the Girl Power ambassadors. For, though the material was qualitatively superior to prior releases, the appealing campiness and “care-free” of their heyday had been replaced by a glossier, sexier image and a less adventurous sound.
In the eyes of many, this safer approach was that since their last chart assault in 98, the industry had drastically changed, slowly turning its back to Pop-bands, while opening itself to Urban music.
Still, few can deny that the four remaining members did delivered a stellar addition to their catalogue with the Darkchild produced cut. Its accompanying video, which boasted a Four Elements-theme, was directed by Jake Nava – and saw Mel B in particular dripping all sorts of swagu.
No matter what the worldwide charts say, ‘Holler’ stands as one of the greatest offerings from one of Pop’s greatest groups of all time.
———————
With confirmation from Scary Spice this week that a brief reunion is in the pipeline for the Spice Moms, 2012 is shaping up to be the year of the “female-band”. From X Factor winners Litte Mix, to the return of the original Sugababes, could the second wave of ‘Girl Power’ be nigh? Time will tell.
Your thoughts?

They remind me of Lady Gaga. Own the planet for 2 or 3 years, then kaput.

It’s crazy this is my favorite song EVER by the SG and probably top 20 fav songs of all time for me. Kinda weird to say that but the time period this song came out mixed with the AMAZING production and even more amazing vocal arrangement and adlibs brings a certain feeling to me that I cannot explain. I could and do listen to this song OVER AND OVER.

The Spice Girls KILLED it with this song, as well as with their album, Forever. Rodney really gave them great material, as well as the other producers who contributed to the album – Jimmy Jam & Teri Lewis. Its a shame this era didn’t fly like their previous years because, once again, this album was absolutely phenomenal, and is still one of my top favorite albums of all time. Thanks for showcasing this, TGJ.

Please TGJStaff!!! Are you tring to say these girls had lots of talent or something??? Grow up. We all enjoyed them as kids but that´s it
@ WizKey
Hmm Gaga is an artist. And will last long. Are u trying to say this type of untalented teen groups are in the same category as grown up artists that actually can sing in studio and live, and also songwrite and play instrumets? Answer is NO

Mel B looks damn hot in this video.
I think the song and the video suit the foursome. If Geri was still in the group it wouldn’t be the same.
They need to make a come-back album and proper world tour.

Wow the Illuminati Pyramid thing was going on long before RIhanna and Lady Gaga came on the scene. Guess our eyes are only now opened to it, yet people still support their music! *SIGH*

THIS SONG IS SUCH A HIT. IT IS AMAZING. FROM THE VOCALS TO THE VIDEO. IT COULD EASILY FIT IN ON TODAY’S RADIO. THEY HAD SUCH AN URBAN THIRD ALBUM AND IT WAS A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. THIS SONG SHOULD HAVE BEEN HUGE IN THE US. IT’S IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO HEAR GOOD MUSIC SUCH AS THIS. A NEW GROUP SHOULD REMAKE THIS SONG AND RELEASE IT IN THE US. THIS SONG IS EASILY ONE OF THEIR BEST. THE R&B SOUND WITH POP APPEAL IS ONE WE NEED MORE OF ON THE RADIO.

What the charts say is that this song was a big hit for them! It was top5 everywhere, apart from the US of course. It was #1 on the MTV European top20 for weeks, and I was SO glad because this song is fucking hot! One of their best, and the video is amazing. 12 years on and it still looks incredible. Emma and Mel B OWN IT!
