The world may be presently mourning the passing of one pop icon, but another R&B/pop starlet is still being sorely missed.  Over 10 years may have passed since the passing of R&B beauty Aaliyah, but the once touted ‘Sparkle’ star’s shine is still bright as she is regularly mentioned in comparison with today’s chart topping contemporaries.  Like most fallen stars, especially after the success of hit 2009 film ‘Notorious’, chatter spread across the industry about a movie depicting the starlet’s life and – most importantly – who would be tapped to play her.

With rumors swirling that ‘Dreamgirls’ (2006) director Bill Condon had signed on to direct the movie, Canadian songstress Keshia Chante had long been rumored to be depicting the ‘Hot Like Fire’ hitmaker in the film.  Sharing an uncanny resemblance to Haughton, Chante was once thought to be the perfect fit.

Now, the Canadian chanteuse, speaking with Chris Yandek, tells a different story.  Will there ever be an ‘Aaliyah’ movie?  Find her thoughts below:

Via CYINTERVIEW:

CY: A few years ago there was talks of you know, playing her in a movie of her life and I just wonder for myself and everyone out there what really happened?

KC: What I will say is…I did meet a few people production company wise that are developing the Aaliyah movie and they spoke to me about playing her in the biopic of her life.  And from my understanding, there are people trying to create a movie and Aaliyah’s family are still mourning her loss and aren’t ready to share her story and create a film. So there’s a bit of back and forth thing with her family and with creative people.

…unfortunately from my understanding they don’t have complete control of her estate. So a movie could technically be made without them green lighting it and I kind of think that’s unfortunate. So I want her family to be on board and to be happy with it. It’s still kind of lingering in the air. I would love to play the part. I’m a huge fan of Aaliyah…I would want to do it justice and exceed people’s expectations of it.”

CY: I think that could be your Selena moment. Do you feel like that could be your big moment?

KC: If it happened that way, that’s the way God intended for it to be. But I mean it’s not something that I’m sitting there like, this has to be it.

CY: I wonder if you feel for yourself is there any kind of bigger responsibility when people say you know, you’re carrying on the torch for Aaliyah or you are like her or you are the artist that resembles her today. Do you feel like any kind of bigger responsibility there?

KC: I grew up with her and I wanted to be just like her. Even in the Unpredictable video and my Bad Boy video, so many people were like, ‘Oh my gosh, she looks like Aaliyah.’ I was never, we never sat there and said, ‘Let’s try to mimic or find inspiration from that. But I do look at, I look at a lot of her work and she was so ahead of the times. She’s very futuristic.’

My thing is…i love Aaliyah i do. but i wouldnt know what to expect from this movie. First of all she was only 22 when she died. And i feel like she was a just a normal person off the scene so i dont know how interesting it would be. Just saying. I would definitely looooove to see a TLC movie (biopic) in maybe 10 or 15 years. I feel that movie would be just filled with interesting turns and twists.

I beg to differ. Aaliyah (although she passed at a very young age) had a lot going on. Especially during the beginning of her career. When she was younger she made mistakes but prevailed in the end. I’d like to see her progress from a young timid woman into the successful young adult she blossomed into before her untimely death. I’d like to see her relationship with her family and friends (especially her brother Rashad, Timbaland and Missy) play out in the movie. She was an interesting, fun spirited young woman and you can even see that in “The Diary of Aaliyah” portrayed on MTV before her passing. She had an eventful life, the movie (if done well) could be fun and very emotional to watch.

Damn Skippy It’s About Time For A Aaliyah Movie ! From Influencing Beyonce, Ashanti And The Likes Of Ciara She Deserves It. I Know It Must Be Hard For Her Family After All These Years, I Hope They Give The Movie The Green Light !

  3. exaltedone February 18, 2012

Yes we’re ready! I hope the family gives the green light when they feel its time.

  4. Ass February 18, 2012

She really does resemble aliyah. She would be perfect for the role.

I believe this chick and drake used to date before he blew up.

I think he dated her because of his obsession with aliyah.

Anywoo I hope the film eventually happens.

I understand what you sayin @Jazatha but if you look at the Selena movie the only major thing that happened was the way that she died and her getting married and we could see the same things about Aaliyah…..She has influenced so many and it would be a shame if we don’t get to see this movie.

    Aliyah= Aaliyah

    My bad

  7. STR8FACTS February 18, 2012

Okay, so you guys always see me in here, especially on regards to an Aaliyah post lol. i just want to address a couple of things.

First off, Aaliyah’s family has publically expressed disdain for a movie depicting her life, most notably her brother Rashad. If you follow him on twitter (@RAD_6) he sometimes answers questions about/regarding Aaliyah and he has said time and time again that a movie about Aaliyah’s life is against his and his family’s wishes as it is not something Aaliyah HERSELF would’ve wanted.

Secondly, since I am a TRUE Aaliyah fan, if any production company had the audacity to green light a film about her life without her family’s blessing I WOULD NOT support it as it is a complete slap in the face and disrespectful to her family and her altogether.

Third, Aaliyah’s entire persona was created around mystery. A lot of people are so facinated with her for the simple fact that they know so much about her but yet so little, she worked hard to keep her image that way for years so don’t you guys think a movie depciting her life would just tarnish her legacy altogether? What would happen to the mystery? It wouldn’t be the girl behind the sunglasses anymore.

A couple years back I was all for an Aaliyah biopic, I thought why not, but honestly after thinking about it, it’s just not necessary, especially if it isn’t something she herself would have wanted. Also, I can image how greif stricken her family still is to this very day and if they did decide to go on and green light a movie, I’m not sure if any of us could stomach any harsh reviews (which are always guarunteed)

    IDK, just my thoughts.

  8. STR8FACTS February 18, 2012

Also, to add to what I said before for those of you who don’t know, Aaliyah’s older brother Rashad is into video production HEAVY and if there were to be ANY sort of movie/documentary etc. whatever I can pretty much bet my life that he’d be the director. There is absolutely NO way around that I promise you, when and If there ever will be a movie, her family will have no problem letting the world know because they will be behind it 200%. TRUST me on that.

  9. Dev February 18, 2012

I think she did really well in that interview. I like the fact that she would like the family to be happy about the movie before taking it on, and how her intention not to have her moment from it. Personally i think too much time has gone. I’m happy for a TV special with the family remembering her, but a movie is unnecessary, but its also a shame that her family dont have control over her estate.
As for a TLC film, not too keen on that either. Anyone who say the documentary saw Left Eye right up to the moment she died and that was chilling enough for me

  10. Laurie February 18, 2012

No movie about Aaliyah is needed I 100% agree with her family so this girl need to stop thnking about how it could be it for her and need to go find another job or role.
Aaliyah is a beautifull mystery that must not be touch.

  12. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) February 18, 2012

It is DEFINITELY time for an Aaliyah biopic!! YES! I am a HUGE fan and I just want people to know more about her. She still gets massive love and recognition (seriously, she died 10 years ago and there are still stans out there, her legacy is growing, it’s amazing!! ), but this movie could introduce her and her music to a whole new audience and may I add a whole new generation. And her music definitely deserves to be spread…it’s timeless and it still sounds fresh!

  13. YOOSONDALOOSE February 18, 2012

Yes I think it is, they should do it, remind people about Aaliyah, make a movie, a greatest hits album.
Bring Aaliyah back in our memories

  14. swagg February 18, 2012

i am on the fence since her fam doesnt want it to happen i just dont know why tho i mean all of her fans would love this if its done right we all know she was young when she died but she had quite a bit accomplished for a 22yr old its alot of ppl that just get started at that age and she was getting ready to be a mega star..I know they say its not what she would have wanted but she was a star star’s love attention an publicity so we dont TRULY know what she would have wanted

  15. Tammy February 18, 2012

Her family don’t want to release the movie because they would have to admit her relationship with R.Kelly.

  16. Nu Nu February 19, 2012

Tammy you are completely right. They would have to admit to her relationship with R Kelly. I feel the family will do what they can to prevent it from being produced. If it is produced although, I hope it wont be as bad as the Biggie movie, smdh

  17. MusicAddictJane March 4, 2012

    Alright in my opinion,
I really would like to see a movie about Aaliyah done, but with so many arising from this about production and the wait. I don’t know anymore to be honest. I think over the last few year of supposedly a movie to come out but I think people fear that her reputation may be ruined whomever plays her role. I am so ready to see movie about Aaliyah, for me as a long dedicated fan of Aaliyah’s I will have to wait even longer for approvals from trying to keep the fans happy, whomever the heck gets the production rights for this movie and the approval of her family. I guess all I have memory wise is her music and her video’s. Aaliyah inspired me to advanced my poetry lyricism to what it has and what it is to date. I have to say it is hard because there has been so much disapproval and unhappiness of who would play Aaliyah. So much bickering and so much disagreements if ever there was a movie who gets the role, cause of the differences between family and the fans of who should be approved of the role. Over the years I checked in, guess I have to wait whenever. For now her music lives on and be excited to hear some unreleased music/album.

  18. Mrs. Tremaine Aldon Neverson March 24, 2012

Please let this happen Haughton Family. I would love to see her life on the big screens one day!!!

  19. zanaia w. June 17, 2012

I think that aaliyah’s family did the right thing. Not to let them make a movie abbout aaliyah’s life because not everyone want. To see a move about a famous pop artist who died years ago people want to forget but not forgotten aaliyah. Aaliyah will always be rememberd and to sit there and watch her whole life agen not just her becoming famous but her getting into that plain and dying is not right her family don’t want to see that as much as we love her and her family she will always be in our hearts no matter what

  20. Shanti July 14, 2012

As much as Aaliyah loverz would love to see her ressurection in the box office, her family doesn’t owe anything to hollywood to ressurect a superstar..no one can play Aaliyah better than Aaliyah. Plus, her family and friends…especially her mother (who slowly moves past that date everyday) would love to see her walk through a front door in spirit or in person. So if they say no…who are we to say yes, so we can watch someone else play her and put her business out there? Let the movie idea rest as peaceful as she’s resting.

I swear to GOD I hate the sh*t out of Keshia Chante. What a fame wh*re. There are those who genuinely care and then there are those who are nothing but OPPORTUNIST. She is look at this biopic as a way for her to become even more famous and more rich and more opportunities for her career! I mean really. Just by reading that interview I can tell she is full of sh*t. Yeah right if she cares that she want the family to be happy. Please! Yeah say all the right things to make ppl like you and not get pissed off. She knows darn as well she doesn’t care if Aaliyah’s family is happy or not…she just want to be able to do the freakin movie. I honestly can’t deal with Keshia Chante..and she doesn’t look like Aaliyah…she look like Faith Evans with her big head swollen big jaw chipmunk lookin self. I can’t deal. A lot of us Aaliyah fans can’t deal. I still miss Aaliyah. It’s hard…it’s soo hard and I def don’t want to see her playing the role as Aaliyah. When they came out with a movie about Biggie it was all good. When they came out with a movie about Tina Turner, the Jackson Family it was all good. But it’s different with Aaliyah.

  22. goldie espinoza August 13, 2012

to the actress that wants to play aalyiah your pretty but you look nothing like her aalyiah cheek bones are flat the side of her face are sharpe very chillized face beatiful hard to find to play someone you would have to become them be them and since she is not around for you to mimic her its very unfair to play her no offence taken i hope that girl is beatiful inside and out one and a million a diamond the best cut you can find .

  23. jewels September 13, 2012

Keshia Chante looks nothing like Aaliyah. They need to have an open casting call . I hope no one mentions that ugly girl from youtube with the wide nose ,huge lips, masculine jaw,Lolita Price. She is worse than Keshia Chante!

  24. lil mama November 14, 2012

I really miss Aaliyah. Even though I was only 3 when she died I still remember her. My fave song was Rock the Boat. Anyway I really hope for a movie and I support her family’s wishes too.

  25. crazy girl November 14, 2012

Wtf is about all this movie s***. They been talking about that since like 2008. Do it if you want if not don’t.

  26. jazmine Thompkins April 2, 2014

I think the girl should play aaliyah because I think that what she would want some body to tell her story I would tell her story if I had this offer I love to sing and dance to her music I think she would want this some body to tell her life story how it was before she be can the Queen of R&B tell the story of a aliyah I would love to see the movie I still listen to her songs to this day

  27. darren April 9, 2014
