D’Banj Debuts ‘Oliver Twist’ Video / Afrobeats Hits Mainstream

Published: Sunday 18th Mar 2012 by Sam

After burning up the clubs for many a year, Afrobeats are finally roaring their way into the mainstream.

And with the likes of Tiwa Savage leading the way, next up is Kanye West‘s Nigerian protegee D’Banj.

A staple on the music scene of his homeland, the rapper was snapped up by Ye’s GOOD Music imprint last year, and has today unveiled the video for his first mainstream release ‘Oliver Twist’.

Armed with many an African ism (see: “gari”, “omotola”), the uptempo sees the rising star fuse the West with West Africa, blending up a banger of a track.

Hit ‘Play’ on the clip above (which features cameos from West, label mate Big Sean and Sugababe Keisha Buchanan) and let us know what you think!

High point,Kanye cameo. The song is wack and makes no sense/has no meaning. Nice beat though.

  4. you March 18, 2012

@you,Its not about being a beggar, it about wanting more- oliver twist- not being able to settle for one woman but you are attracted to different aspects of different women.

Sam u r an idiot! Dont disrespect Nigerians! Afrobeat is the Kuti’s, Lagbaja and so on! And all those guys are well known over the world. Their tours overseas go for hundreds of dollars and they all sell out.

Dbanj is cookie cutter pop. He cant sing one bit. His entire voice is auto tuned to death here and American public will kill him to death. He cannot sing for s***! And the lyrics of the song are so much rubbish that even a blind retarded kid could have written!
Dbanj is too rass! He is a high school dropout and its evident in the way he carries himself.

@Beth: you just spoke my mind. D’Banj himself knows that he isn’t a vocalist but an entertainer that can barely dance

D’banj’s OlivEr Twist is the last of his tracks that would be a bang cos he is empty without his producer (Don Jazzy).
