With a career spanning almost 40 years, KISS front man Gene Simmons is just as renowned for his Pop culture impact, as he is for his talent.
Never one to mince his words, his outspoken persona has oft landed him in hot water, coming under fire in 2011 for his ‘controversial’ stance on the late Michael Jackson‘s personal and legal issues.
Now, he has weighed in on the supermodel Rihanna. Slamming her for what he calls ‘fake bullsh*t’.
His comments below…
During a press conference in aid of KISS’ upcoming tour with the Motley Crue, Gene confessed:
We’re sick and tired of girls getting up there with dancers and karaoke tapes in back of them. No karaoke singers allowed. No fake bullsh-t. Leave that to Rihanna-Schimianna and everybody else whose name ends with an ‘A.
We’d say he’s being a little unfair.
Because, 8 times out of ten, Fenty does sing live, which is more than can be said for a number of her contemporaries.

Beyonce sings beautifully. For example, I wouldn’t call her beautiful vocals on Halo yelling by any means whether she’s live or in the studio. I think Rihana has a huge following and has solidified herself with hit after hit, and the hitlist will keep climbing. However, she hasn’t stepped her live vocals up at all. She does sing live, but she’s not very good. Most of the ime you can’t hear her for the loud backing tracks and band, which is definately intentional. I do agree that Katy Perry does yell. The most famous lipsingers and autotuners today that somehow get a pass from the pulic are Britney Spears and Nikki Minaj, who both ironically end up as judges on singing shows. Go figure…

I think he used Rihanna as an example because she has lip synced for some major tv performances of “Found Love” lately and maybe he saw them. As for Madonna, everyone knows she was lip syncing at the Superbowl. But I think it would have been better for him to name someone with more of a history of lip syncing on a regular basis, like Britney Spears or Janet Jackson. Both have done so on a consistent basis for years. Regardless of who is being used as an example, overall though I agree with his point. Lip syching the majority of a song should be rarely done by a vocalist. If they can’t sing the major parts of the song and dance then they should just stand there and sing and leave the dancing to the dancers on stage. If artists insist on dancing but can’t pull it off while singing, they should just let the song play without moving their mouths as they dance, pretending to sing. In other words, just be real, don’t fake it to deceive the audience. Especially not on a regular
basis or you will lose credibility as a vocalist. For example, since they lip sync so often swear I have no idea as to whether Britney or Janet have any ability to carry a tune long enough to finish a whole song. Rihanna may not sound great when she sings live but at least its real and honest.

I am not exactly disagreeing with Gene and the subject of his tirade, but I think having a second rate musician, whose band relies heavily on theatrical displays because their music is not of a good enough quality to stand on its own airing these grievances is kind of ironic. Sure I agree that this kind of American Idol-esque performance is way over done, but to suggest that people want to see old men wearing silly clothes and painting their faces while singing simplistic three chord rock tunes is not really my idea of a decent replacement. Kiss was always more of a show band than a quality musical interpretation. And Motley Crue was just another cookie cutter hair rock band that were a dime a dozen back in the eighties. These guys are barking their profanities like they were class acts in their times. Now they’re just a couple of old swear boxes trying to recapture the fame they once had. But once again, their words do have a vein of truth behind them. The only problem is its just the pot calling the kettle black in this case.
