The last few years have seen Lil Kim hit headlines for everything but her music.
However, in a new insightful interview with MTV Sucker Free, the Queen Bee has revealed that there’s a method to her madness.
Opening up for the first time on the topic, the femcee revealed that a succession of lawsuits and label drama have kept her from officially releasing new music, and at one point left her indebted to a former label.

“When I came home from prison in 2006, I was really unhappy with my label so I wanted to get off, and I didn’t get released. I wasn’t dropped. I had to pay them. So, at the end of the day, it’s like that takes time. For two years, I fought and fought and fought and finally there was a break. During those two years, I did my Hollywood thing, I mean doing reality shows, ‘Dancing With The Stars’ and all that good stuff. But in between me doing ‘Dancing With The Stars’, I struck up another deal. I did deal with Track Masters, and it didn’t work out, but that took another year or two.
Contractually, by the courts, I could not record any music. I wasn’t supposed to put any music out. Technically ‘Black Friday’ was a mixtape, so I was able to get away with that. But technically they could have come after me if I were to put out an album. I couldn’t do it. So, this is something that my fans don’t know, but now you know. Legally I wasn’t allowed or able to do music. And ’til this day I’m not going to say I’m glad that the lawsuit happened with Trackmasters, but it made me more of a business woman.”
Now the puzzle pieces are falling into place.
It has since emerged that Kim was sued by Brookland Media (Track Masters) in 2008 for a whopping for $2.5 million dollars and rendered legally disallowed to release new material after bailing on the record deal. Word has it, Brookland forked out $200,000 to Kim’s former label Atlantic to buy her out of her contract, going on to spend $240,000 to produce 8 songs for the scrapped LP and over $12,000 to rent housing near the studio. Needless to say, it’s clear Kim either didn’t refute the claims or lost any such rebuttal.
In any case, it’s great to finally have some clarity on the matter. Because, punchlines aside, yours truly was all sorts of in-love with her last effort ‘The Naked Truth’, and couldn’t understand how – after scoring a coveted 5 Mics from The Source – she’d go ghost on everyone. Especially with the thirst for new material from her then-being at an all-time high.
That said, shouldn’t she have just said (or at the very least, alluded to) this to begin with, instead of fueling pointless beef, which left her own career worse for wear?
Still, what’s done is done.
With her legal woes now seemingly behind her, here’s hoping the material she’s been drip-feeding to iTunes as of late is followed by a meatier LP. Love her or loathe her, the success of Nicki Minaj has re-opened the doors for the Kim’s of the world, hence now’s the time to capitalise on it.
