‘The Voice’ Continues Ratings High; We Ask “Is It Now Top TV Talent Show?”

Published: Tuesday 6th Mar 2012 by Sam

A surprise hit.

Indeed, that’s the title NBC’s ‘The Voice’ was christened with upon launching last April.

Tossing it’s wig into the ever growing ring that is the TV talent arena, the show was viewed by many as an inferior American Idol. And yet fast forward a year, and the series (now in its second season) is being hailed as Idol’s conquerer.

Full story after the jump…

Boosted by a Super Bowl launch, season 2 of the Dutch import has averaged 16 million viewers an episode. A figure which was expected to drop this week as the staple auditions ended. However, true to the show’s winning streak, last night’s first Battle Round episode pulled in 16.32 million viewers  – up 13% from the previous week.

Immensely impressive in its own right, the figure sees the Christina Aguilera fronted show attract more viewers X Factor USA (and its 12 million average). Yet, perhaps most notable is its standing when compared to American Idol – which after 10 years is now averaging 16 million viewers an episode.

And while it’d be premature to mourn Idol’s reign, the show’s neck-in-neck ratings and Voice’s overall “fresher” look/ feel has seen it emerge as the favourite for many in the court of public opinion.

That said, ever eager to pierce through the smoke and mirrors, we want to know…

Has The Voice trumped the competition?

Your thoughts?

I LOVE HOW THEY NAMED THE SHOW AFTER MS XTINA… YESSSSS

  2. KING#15 March 6, 2012

ALSO THE FACT THAT ALL THE JUDGES ON THE VOICE CAN ACTUALLY SING

  3. Garrett March 6, 2012

It will not conquer until it actually produces acts! None of the artists from the first season even had albums chart in the top 100, while Idol had three from the last season (granted they were all country, yuck).
The Voice will conquer Idol once they create names somewhat as influential as JHud, Fantasia, Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks, Daughtry, Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood, or Katharine McPhee.
Hey, even Taylor Hicks is more popular than the previous winner of the Voice, idk even his name

  4. Small_Angel March 6, 2012

I really think The Voice is a better show than American Idol and X Factor. AND THAT IS ONLY MY OPINION.

  5. social1 March 6, 2012

Love the show and the success of it, but I want to know what happened to Christina’s single she was suppose to drop in February?

  6. jesselopez March 6, 2012

American idol is very much still the king of talent shows….like garret said when they produce kelly clarkson,j-hud,mcphee,fantasia,jordin sparks, adam lambert or even clay aiken stars then and only then will we think of them as the new king! also they might be tied in views but def not in talent, american still has way better singers!

  7. nate March 6, 2012

I could care less that The Voice hasn’t produced a talent yet, it’s still an entertaining show. The judges have THE BEST chemistry than any of their competitors. The talent this season is off the charts, the battle round episode was so good!! This show is single handedly saving a whole network, so to me yes it’s surfing past Idol.

  8. IMGUNNACHECKUBOO March 6, 2012

People don’t watch the show to see who the voice is gonna be. They watch cause it’s entertaining. AI is boring as hell. The End.

  9. ChristinasCOMING March 6, 2012

For those of you referencing Katherine McPhee and Taylor Hicks in your post….you’re forgetting that those 2 are 1 hit wonders.

The talent this season of the Voice is sooooooo much better than the first and I can definitely see whoever wins become really huge!

A lot more people are resorting to the Voice because rather than judge somebody off their appearance or style, they judge them based purely off their voice. Because the judges are turned around, the contestants can concentrate better on their auditions.

The Voice has the more entertaining concept because AI has failed to reinvent and get judges who are REAL singers and relevant.

  11. Small_Angel March 6, 2012

I agree The Voice has a better Coaches/Judges if we are going to compare them with Idol and Factor. They have Christina the best of her Generation.. The only way that Idol and factor need to do is to get Mariah or Celine to Judge a show.. so we can have a competion.

But who will battle the caliber of cee-lo? Adam and blake? Those 3 are the best in their field…

  12. JER March 7, 2012

yeah. I thought the voice would 4lop but it’s Xfactor that is a 4lop and American Idol is not all that anymore

  13. jesselopez March 7, 2012

the voice is entertaining?? with al that planned fake figthing? please i want real not real housewives. they say it’s about the voice and than when the voice is bad and they turn around and the person is cute they say awww can we go again? if the person is not they just say sorry…so b.s. on that.

and how does the voice have better coaches? uh steven tyler is a f****** legend, jlo is a f****** triple threat success and randy has produced stars as i mentioned above. while xtina is/was talented and the others are amazing singers, that doesn’t mean they can make a star. hell all of xtina’s lastest performances have been a disaster, whilst jlo’s has been amazing! and that host always seems awkward and out of place with his creepy bug eyes.

  14. aishaaguilerakeys March 7, 2012

U dared to compare Aguilera and Jlo. Wow. Lol. Otherwise I watch the voice- only for Aguilera- and I like it, but I don’t like the battle concept. As for the other talent shows, I don’t watch them at ALL.

I think ‘The Voice’ and ‘American Idol’ can definitely co-exist.

My personal favorite is ‘The Voice’. It’s so interesting and fresh and it supports real talent. And this year, it’s a much more advanced platform for the winner and the finalists, so maybe some of the contestants will have some commercial success, which would make the show even MORE reliable and credible!!

  16. linker nippel March 7, 2012

    is all about xtina 😉
i love the voice ..its the best casting show #fact
    -best coaches
    -best talents
    -best performances
    – and xtina

  17. Xadax March 7, 2012

    XTINA!!!

  18. LaLa March 7, 2012

I love American Idol & I love The Voice!
AI is veteran singing competition & The Voice is fresh! ofcourse it will gain new fans. but kudos for AI & TV who still gain a great ratings despite the crazy 3 similar singing show airing (last/this) year.

    @JesseLopez
wow you sound a lil bit deluded.
“american (idol) still has way better singers!”
if you talking about 2011. I might agreed with you but not @ 2012
    (we’ll see the progress though)

Did you really watched the talent/singers on The Voice??!
coz this season they have so many amazing talent!

& why the need of sayin… “hell all of xtina’s lastest performances have been a disaster, whilst jlo’s has been amazing!” ???? Do you really need to reaching like that? xD

  19. jesselopez March 7, 2012

@lala the reason i pointed out xtina and jlo’s lastest performances was because everyone was saying the voice has better judges who actually can sing. and i will admit that i haven’t been watching the voice so my comment on their talent was a little bias. and american idol has some amazing passionate sangers this season…search deandre brakensick, erika van pelt and jessica sanchez from this season.

    @ASAP
supports real talent? the contestants on A.I aren’t real talent?

  20. LaLa March 7, 2012

    @JesseLopez

lol at your reasoning. is very contrary. but nvm…

Oh I love Jessica Sanchez… her voice remind me of JHud + Bey! I Hope she made it to the top 3!!! & Deandre is good with his falsetto & high note. & on the Voice last episode I Love this performance! Give me chillssss for sure. check this out…

  21. jesse lopez March 9, 2012

@lala ……YES! that’s exactly what i said. i said she sounds like j-hud mixed with beyonce and does the x-Tina finger tapping the mic thing.

  22. LaLa March 9, 2012

High5 Jesse 😉 I hope AI will have female winner this season. It’s been long overdue right?!

  23. jesse lopez March 10, 2012

I just realized it has been a loooong time since a female won. I stopped watching after fantasia, then came back for Adam lambert and left again until j lo came. I don’t know though I really like deandre…but he might get ate up by the strong voiced girls like Jessica S. , Elise T. and Erika van pelt. oh or even that country girl…..her name escapes me. i’m not opposed to a girl winning though.
