As the biggest-selling female group of all-time, Destiny’s Child have earned themselves a collective place in music history. Perhaps most impressive, though, is that it’s status Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams achieved by the time they were 25.
Yet it’s their arguably abrupt end at that such a humble age (back in 2005) which has many pining for their comeback – some seven years later. Granted, at the time, Beyonce had become…well…”Beyonce”, and Kelly and Michelle were blossoming in their own right, their final outing ‘Destiny Fulfilled’ ironically felt like their first “group” album. Indeed, while the ‘Single Ladies’ singer was still covertly “lead”, verses were more equally shared, with the growth in her comrades given ample spotlight. And then…

Have to disagree. Looking at Kelly Rowland’s BET Awards performance and listening to her singing a Mariah Carey song at the last BET Honors awards, I would honestly say they’re equal. Beyonce just gets more hype and has better access to the best songwriters and choreographers.

As big of a fan I am of the group and as much as I want to see them together again, I’d have to say now is not the right time… I’d still love to see more of what Kelly can do on her own given the success she just had.. I’d most def want to see her in another movie or two….. Same thing with Michelle… She’s had great success in theater and now its time for more MUSIC…. I’d love to see her transition onto the big screen and also do something with Tyler Perry… He has a big following so it would of course put her face/name out there more… i’d say in 2-3 years another album / tour would be the perfect timing… Maybe even some sort of bio-pic….

Mariah Carey, Rihanna, and Mary J Blige are just as recognized as Beyonce. When Beyonce and Mary J Blige performed at the televised Essence music Festival, both women were given equal top billing. Also, I honestly see more Rihanna these days then Beyonce. In fact, according to wikipedia’s highest selling artists, Rihanna sold more albums as well as Mariah, Whitney, Janet Jackson, and Sade. I like Beyonce’s music, but I’m not such a blinded fan that I would say she is the most recognizable when the other ladies mentioned above (especially Riahnna and Mariah) get just as much love.

Kelly should stand on her own two feet now and I think she must continue her growth as a solo act. Actually, Spice girls is the best selling group and TLC is the SECOND best selling girl group. Destiny’s Child comes in THIRD. Look it up on wikipedia. The only people that are saying DC was the highest selling are those who are UNFAIRLY factoring in their SOLO projects to boost up their GROUP numbers (Just like Beyonce’s camp added in DC’s sales to her solo numbers to boost up her individual sales). Thankfully, there are many reputable sources that take this into consideration and accurately report the sales. If Michael Jackson’s sales with the Jackson 5 are not counted in his individual sales and vice versa and Justin Timberlake’s NSYNC sales and the many other group acts turned solo, why should Beyonce/Destiny’s Child be allowed to do that? A group is a group, no matter how talented Beyonce was, DC was a success because of ALL its talented parts so group sales and individual sales need to be separated for fairness sake.

It’s funny because as a fan of Destiny’s Child, beyonce never outshined her band mates. Sure she was given waaaayyy more singing parts and was always PLACED in front of everyone, but when the others were GIVEN A CHANCE to actually sing, they proved themselves COMPLETELY capable of being on the same stage with Beyonce. I saw DC in concert live as well as Beyonce solo, and I can tell you that vocally and performance wise Kelly Rowland is seriousl UNDERRATED and vocally, Michelle can tear up! Latoya Luckett has also proven to be a capable singer even though her performance skills need to be more polished (but that is probably because she’s been out of the limelight so long). Beyonce has been given EVERY opportunity to be showcased and developed to her full potential. This is why the other girls left, because were RARELY allwed that same opportunity. Not hating, Beyonce is talented but the others, especially Kelly can throw down on stage and they’ve always were on the SAME LEVEL as Beyonce when they were a group. They just got less shine, because someone’s daddy was the manager. Now if every group member was given the same amount or at least close to the same amount of singing parts and camera time, then maybe you would have a case of Beyonce out shinning everyone in that group. But looking at Kelly Rowland’s 2011 BET performance in which EVERYONE said was the best of the night (even over Beyonce’s), I would have to disagree.

Beyonce is not the most successful black artist out there. Mariah and Whitney (The Voice ) Houston have outsold her by almost a 150 million and have been awarded WAYYY more awards in total than Beyonce has. Also, Janet Jackson and Mary J continue to get HUGE respect after over 20 years in the business. and have been awarded WAYYY more awards in total than Beyonce has. Beyonce did not get 16 grammy’s off 4 albums, she got 16 grammy’s off 8 albums (she got her first few with the 4 albums she made with Destiny’s Child). With those only 7 albums, Whitney sold nearly 200 million and SET the bar for female vocalists, including Beyonce. She as well as Mariah and Janet have also been awarded far more. Even Rihanna’s solo album sales top Beyonce’s solo sells (check wikipedia Grestest Selling Artists of all time). Beyonce is talented, has garnered MEGA success, but she had ALOT of people backing her from jump street. Her father was the manager and Beyonce was given more singing lines and air time, because of that. It’s just the truth. There has never been a time where I thought Beyonce could sing or dance better than the original DC members (Michelle Williams is another story even though she def CAN SANG). In fact, it was a long running controversy that pissed fans off as to why the other were not given the limelight. It’s clearly not because they are less talented because I’ve heard live performances from Kelly and Latoya and they can blow just as good and Kelly can dance her but off too. She hooked up with Jay Z giving her street cred and the rest is history. Raw talent alone don’t make you a superstar. That’s only a SMALL portion of the formula. Most of it is wrapped up in getting the best managers, songwriters, choreographers, and making the right connections to generate the hype. Beyonce was not more talented, she just had a WAAYY better crew behind her solo projects than the other members.

If Beyonce was really their ‘friend’ she would have spoken up for them when HER FATHER was biasely giving her the bulk of the singing parts, a lot more air time, and a bigger cut of the profits than her so-called friends. Afterall, the manager was her dad, if she wanted to she could passed over some of the parts/limelight to the others. They had every right to call her, her father, and whoever else was behind that mess out. They spent just as many years laboring in the group and, from what I’ve seen of their live performances, clearly had talent as well so why should they always be relegated to the background when it was a “group” effort. Yes, I’m totally with you. It’s aggravating to see Bey catching so much heat because she’s naturally gifted. I was ecstatic when the group parted ways, because people blamed Bey for things beyond her control and ran 100 excuses for Kelly’s mishaps (disregarding the fact that many of her live shows were lacking or that her albums weren’t performing well). Now that there’s no Bey, no Mathew, etc there isn’t anybody around to point fingers at.
Remember when it got to the point where people honestly expected Bey not to release an album when Kelly was out. That was the most ridiculous thing I ever heard! I can see if Bey came out every year, STILL you can’t put your life on hold for anyone. They should all just keep the past in the past!

From what I’ve seen Kelly has kept the past in the past and Kelly can perform and sing very well. So can Letoya and Michelle, When Letoya left the group, she left the record label as well so she had to start all over again. Michelle went into Gospel/Inspirational (which never gets as much publicity/album sales as pop/r&b) and when Kelly hooked up with Nelly and Lil Wayne she did produce hits. When Beyonce came out, she had the same weapon with her that Rihanna had, JAY Z. That connection with him, who was PRESIDENT OF ONE OF THE BIGGEST RECORD LABELS at the time and one of the most respected rappers in the game, as well as the fact that her DAD was the manager of the group worked strongly in her favor, regardless of her talent. She, just like Rihanna does now, gets the best songwriters, choreographers, tracks, and support. That has alot to do with the long term success of an artist. Letoya leaving the group, Michelle doing gospel, and Kelly still under the management under Matthew Knowles at the time were not going to produce superstar careers anyway simply because of their circumstances not their lack of talent.

They already got their fair share of success and fame, the industry is fine without them granted that, while great performers, they simply aren’t what you would call groundbreaking musicians and all the members have chosen a different direction for their respective solo careers, so a reunion would just look contrived, even more so than the last time they attempted it with the 4th album, the first time that the critics went in for the kill and slated them.
Why not just give a shot to a bunch of new girls with talent, will to work hard and passion for music instead of bringing back a group that disbanded 8 years ago? Put it to rest, let them have their solo careers and make room for a new girlband.

One last comment, sales doesn’t mean your the best, I don’t care if Spice Girls sold more then DC or TLC to name a few, fact is non of the Spice Girls has had a great lasting solo career on their own, A Destiny’s Child reunion tour would be bigger, not sure if the Spice Girls reunion was just Uk or global, fact is we know DC will be worldwide and I’m pretty sure they could still sale big as a group now, if they were to make music again, which is probably unlikely with some other girl groups especially The Spice Girls, they did well at their time but non of them is as influential as Beyonce, that alone makes Destiny’s Child greater then the Spice Girls.
Album sales may not be an indication of who is the better performer (like you said none of the Spice Girls have produced a solo career nearly as successful as Beyonce’s or even Kelly’s). However, greater albums can indicate that a group has a LARGER FAN BASE. Depending on the Album/sales ratio, if Spice Girls sold more copies per album, this would prove that they had a larger fan base than Destiny’s Child, therefore, they would sell out a better tour than DC. I like DC way more than Spice girls, but I think Spice Girls do have more fans, especially internationally. Just being honest.

On topic, no. They need to have their solo runs first. If a DC reunion happened right now, people would say the girls were overexposed. When they each have NOTHING else going on, THEN they should reunite.
I think a lot of people downplay the contributuion that Letoya and Latavia made to the group and because of the PR that DC had they make it oout to seem like they left the group when in actuallity they were fired. Point blank you hear that FIRED just because they sent a letter of dissastifaction to their manager who by right didnt have the right to do that. And most people talk about DC3 but i dnt really see the big deal when most of those people are beyonce fans so yall dont have a say as it would be biased. Plus the group never throughout its history got to showcase its groupness if you know what i mean. I feel like if they do come together it should be Five members but everything needs to be out in the open clearly business wise so that when they hit the studio everyone is clear on whats expected.
Also everyone should have equal wirting, vocals and stage presence and great harmonies like in DC4 but also a verse for eveyone wheter it be 16 or 8 like in DC3 but when it comes to the stage everyone should be on point with their delvieries and moves.

THANK YOU so much for this post. I’ve been trying to tell people from the jump that you can’t compare performers when its not an even playing field. When Destiny’s Child first came out I NEVER got a chance to hear Latvia and Letoya sing and BARELY got to hear Kelly. When I saw DC perform live at award shows, ALL of the girls seemed equally capable in their dance routines and everyone sounded good (even with the little parts the others got). I never saw Beyonce standing out from the rest on stage. She just got more singing parts and camera time, that’s all. This didnt make her the better performer, just the one with most power because of her father. The Beyonce you see today is one that has been PUT TOGETHER by a crew of extremely talented songwriters (she DOES NOT write her own songs no matter what she says), choreographers, designers, record execs (who got the payola to get her stuff played and the hype made), and JAY Z and PAPA Knowles combined with her talent.
DC was Beyonce and 2 glorified back up singers, the closest we’ll get to DC is a Beyonce Kelly Collaboration otherwise its over.
The only reason why they were backup singers was because Beyonce’s father was the manager who made sure they remained back up singers. If you’re so much more talented, why not give others the opportunity to at least sing some solo parts so that we can REALLY judge who is the best.

Again, like I’ve been saying, Latavia and Latoya were NOT ALLOWED to contribute! That’s why they left. They did help write songs on their debut album AND Writings on the Wall (they were on TWO albums not one) and some of DC’s greatest hits like Bills, Bills, Bills, and Say My Name were performed and co-written by them. However, outside of singing back up and co-writing on some tracks they were restricted from doing much else. It’s funny how some people ignore the fact that THREE former members of DC (Latavia Letoya and Farrah Franklin) have said the same thing, that Matthew Knowles was biased towards his daughter, did not pay everyone equally, and did not allow everyone to conrtibute equally to the group. DC went through more members than the Supremes. CLEARLY the issue was with the unfair treatment. It’s sad that those girls worked that hard to alongside Beyonce and Kelly to get the group signed in the first place, to just be thrown in the background and fired a couple years later. If Beyonce was soooo much better than them as ya’ll claim, why did she need to be in a group in the first place? Why didn’t she go solo like Whitney, Mariah, Janet, Monica, or Brandy (even Rihanna)? Clearly the labels told her she wasn’t good enough YET on her own to get signed solo. She needed to be DEVELOPED into the star that she is today and, unfortunately, the other members were in NO WAY given the same amount of development or attention to even have Beyonce’s career. We all saw that when they would not let let any of them sing solos but her despite the fact that they could all sing. Stop with the bias and just be honest.

@Kimberly Destinys Child had two Albums when it was Letoya and Latavia in the group the albums are Called Destinys ChILD (SELF-ttitled) and & Their Breakout The Writings on The Wall. Check the videos No no no part 1 & 2, With Me, Get on the Bus Bug-A-BOO, Bills Bill, Bills a song with MATTHEW mardsden She gone. Contrary to popular belief they helped established the group to be what it was they may have not done the rest but neither did Kelly or Michelle who didn’t really write none of their biggest records as a three member group. So I advised you and anyone else doubting these two woman go check becasue the Name DC became a success off their hardwork and the controversary that followed anything else was a piece of cake ask Beyonce’s FATHER.
Another album NO, a tour together Maybe in the future; that sounds better then an album bcuz what will they sing about? A performance with all the girls on maybe the Grammys, MTV or BET Awards would be epic though. Beyonce is SERIOUSLY overrated. She is very talented but several R&B artists (Mariah, Whitney, Rihanna, Janet) are equally if not more talented and have sold more albums than she has as a solo artist (in fact, Whitney and Mariah sold more albums than her solo AND as a member of DC combined!) . The above four artists have also produced more number 1 hits as well. People need to get their facts straight and check the Billboard Bestsellers and greatest hits charts and you will see. Even Kelly’s “Delimma” scored a spot on Billboard’s greatest Hot 100 Singles in Billboard’s 50 year history. Beyonce can sing and dance, but there are others who are just as talented, they just don’t get the hype and shine of being in the most popular couple in R&B/Hip Hop right now (I’m talking about her relationship with Jay Z). You cannot say that that didn’t help catapult her to the level it did. Just look at what it did for Rihanna’s career and she has half the talent of Beyonce but because Jay Z is her manager, she actually has garnered more hits in a shorter time frame than Beyonce. Out of her 8 number one hits in the US, two were with a Rapper (one of them being Jay Z and the other with Slim Thug) and 4 were with Destiny’s Child. For whatever talent she does have (which I am not denying her talent) she has usually had to collaborate to produce number one hits (Baby Boy with Sean Paul, Beautiful Liar with Shakira, Telephone with Lady Gaga). Irreplaceable (a song written entirely by NEYO) and Single Ladies are the only two number ones she had on her own (and we all know that the video made single ladies a hit). Sge’s talented, but she needed assistance just like others (ALOT of it apparently). That why she couldn’t get a record deal as a solo artist from jump street (unlike Whitney, Mariah, Mary, Alicia, Brandy, Monica, or even Rihanna). The labels apparently told her she NEEDED a group in order to be fully DEVELOPED ENOUGH to actually become a solo artist. So her FATHER, the manager of the group, created some BS group, made the other girls work their butts off for years alongside Beyonce, just to be treated unfairly when they actually got the record deal. They got next to NO singing parts, little camera time and press, and less money than Beyonce even though they contributed years of blood and sweat with Beyonce to get the group a record deal in the first place because Beyonce COULD NOT GET A DEAL ON HER OWN. Then when it was time to go solo, Beyonce got the BEST writers, stylist, producers, choreographers and hooked with Jay Z to give her the street cred she needed cash in on the then popular hip hop/r&b callabo trend and PRESTO you got a new R&B sensation. Not the most talented but the most promoted and hyped and hooked up. It”s not fair to compare these girls to Beyonce when they weren’t even given the chance to fairly compete with her from jump street.
