Madonna Moves To #1

As reported last week, ‘Holiday’ hitmaker Madonna would have much cause to celebrate given the expected performance of her 12th LP ‘MDNA’.  Industry insiders expected the ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’-led LP to shift 300-350k in its first week based on the strength of its first day sales.

However, much like in many other aspects of the 53-year-old’s career, the Material Girl silenced naysayers when she even exceeded those expectations.  Bursting onto Billboard, find out how much Madge moved after the jump (in the absence of a major promo push):

359,000

These official numbers are her best since 2000’s ‘Music’ (which sold 420k) in its first week.  Next week, however, expects to see big numbers from the Material Girl’s new gal pal/’Luvin’ co-star Nicki Minaj as her sophomore effort ‘Roman Reloaded’ landed in stores today.

Until then, congratz are certainly due to Ms. Ciccone!

I told ya Madonna was gonna say them bad reviews she got don’t mean nothing. It’s all about records sells b**** not people talking s*** about a album.

Men lie.. Women lie.. Numbers don’t..

Madonna will always be the queen of pop
    Remember that you losers

Watch here comes the haters but Madonna don’t give a f*** she sitting back counting money while ya live off ya mom and dad smh

  2. Anne April 3, 2012

Good for her. All hail the QOP!

  3. Mike April 3, 2012

I bow down to Madonna! She living good!

  4. Mafalo April 3, 2012

Actually the vast majority of MDNA’s reviews have positive. It’s only the hack bloggers who’re bitter because Madonna’s still the alpha female she always was (and continues to grab the spotlight over the competition) that try to be negative with their commentary. The PROFESSIONAL and ACCREDITED reviewers who write for reputable magazines/blogs have been largely enthusiastic about the album.

Anyway, Madonna’s still in charge and still the reigning Queen of Pop. Stans may lie, but numbers don’t.

  5. MONINJBHJV April 3, 2012

MADONNA JUST SHUT ALL THE HATERS UP…LMAO!!

  6. KAT DELUNA FAN April 3, 2012

B**** please ..Numbers do lie and all those new girls have made the numbers lie.

”Madonna‘s “MDNA” album is expected be the number 1 album in the country this week. Final numbers will come in later today. But in fact, Lionel Richie, with nearly 200,000 copies of his “Tuskegee” album sold–his best debut in 20 years or m0re–could post a valid complaint. It turns out that a hefty number of “MDNA” albums weren’t sold the usual way. Madonna’s label, Interscope, and Live Nation, which owns Ticketmaster, bundled the album with her ticket sales. For every ticket sold online to Madonna’s upcoming shows, purchasers automatically receive a copy of “MDNA.” They get a link to a free purchase on ITunes, or they can send in their mailing address for a physical CD. It doesn’t matter if the concert ticket is $52 or $350. It’s a smart marketing move for Interscope. It unnaturally inflates sales, and uses “MDNA” for what albums have become–souvenirs, or loss leaders.’

    @KAT DELUNA FAN

    Damn, thats f***** up!

  8. myla April 3, 2012

Kat Deluna Fan is telling the truth.

  9. B. Hill April 3, 2012

#1 in 50 countries with virtually no promo. Bow down. Madonna owns this music industry.

  10. OctoberNite April 3, 2012

Lies. Purchasers didn’t “automatically” receive a free copy of MDNA with concert tickets. They had to opt for the album, and THOSE tickets had an inflated price to cover it. If you honestly think Madonna and Live Nation would give away her album and take a financial loss, then you have no idea what you’re talking about.

If concert goers wanted to spend the extra money for the CD with their ticket, then so be it. You do know that CDs are always sold at concerts, right?

Madonna’s tactic was a stroke of genius. And in the meantime, Billboard and Soundscan are well aware of this and have not rejected this measure (because, again, ticket buyers are BUYING the CD; they’re not getting s*** for free). So in the end everything is legitimate.

Try again, haters. That was a fail.

  11. RYK101 April 3, 2012

Exactly, haters just talk s*** without knowing well s***! The option of getting the album with your ticket was paying the ticket AND the album, so fail!

All of them haters are just pressed Madonna is slaying the game and proving to be as popular as ever

Kat DeLuna b****, you should keep everything cute, since your fave is a flop and all the girls you love beside that flop are flopping too!! No surprise you are always hating on more successful artists, you are just pressed, and calling people talentless as if Kat DeLuna was a major talent

  12. DD1G April 3, 2012

OCTOBERNIGHT just delivered a backhand b**** slap to the ignorant naysayers. Loved it. Yes, you had to buy the cd with the ticket. The album doesn’t come free with tickets. Prince gave away free cds with his concert tickets and Billboard said no. Madonna bundled the cost of her tickets with the cost of her cd, and Billboard said yes. Why? Because the cd is still being sold. It’s just another way to buy music — aside from the typical record store experience. Hell, Lionel sold his album on the Home Shopping Network and those sales are being counted too. No one’s cheating here. LOL

  13. Mike April 3, 2012

If I pay $200 a ticket to go see the Queen and get the album with the purchase it most definitely should count. I mean the haters can’t see that people are willing to pay big $ to go see Her Madgesty live instead of just $12 to buy the record. Fact is Madonna had better first week sales than Beyonce, Britney, Rihanna or Katy. Other artists her age (and any artist aside from Adele and some country artists) don’t sell even close to what pop stars sold in the 80’s and 90’s. Most people prob already had the leaked version of the album so these numbers are quite impressive

  14. Tbozfan10 April 3, 2012

Some people have no clue what they’re talking about. The album didn’t “automatically come with a ticket” fool. Customers were given the option of purchasing a copy of MDNA with their ticket. They didn’t have to of they didn’t want to.

Anyways, these sales numbers are amazing.apparently inter scope is doing something right! Without a huge single and little ordinary promo too. I was very surprised that these sales even beat “Confessions on a dance floor” 1st week sales which were 350,000 in the first week and during Christmas holidays too!

    ——–>Here’s the wording from Ticketmaster’s website(inside Forbes article) :

Get “MDNA” with your Ticket- Madonna is having a huge party and everyone’s invited. For every ticket purchased online, you’ll receive your choice of a digital or physical copy of Madonna’s new album MDNA. Prior to the album release on 3/26, you’ll receive an email from Ticketmaster with redemption instructions. If you purchase your tickets on or after 3/26, you’ll receive your email within 48 hours. Offer is valid for United States residents & events only. Please note: This offer is not valid for tickets purchased through Official Platinum Seats or TicketExchange.

    They continue with this:

“Not everyone takes the CD,” says the source, although it seems unlikely that customers who want a ticket to see an artist don’t also want their new music– as it’s already included in the price of admission.

Looks like most people WILL opt to include the album simply because its a better deal. It would be in their best interest. The cd is apparently included with the ticket sales. I don’t think anyone’s hating on Madge, it’s just a matter of stating facts. Lionel Richie was #1 on Amazon & ITunes, while Madonna was at #4 for most of the week. Those are only 2 music purchasing outlets, but they are both pretty major ones. It’s just odd to see Richie outsold by over 150k.

  16. There is enough place for every artist – Stans stop hating others April 3, 2012

    With no U.S. hit singles.

    With no promotion.

Ha-ha-ha. People are nervous @ TGJ HQ. LMFAO.

  17. Jasmine April 4, 2012

There is too much negativity on here. I am all for stans defending their favorite artist but when a decent news article is posted and most people leaving positive comments there is no reason for comments like:

“Watch here comes the haters but Madonna don’t give a f*** she sitting back counting money while ya live off ya mom and dad smh”

  18. Carter April 4, 2012

Ummm I could be crazy but I would consider a headlining performance at the super bowl promotion. After all, annually this is the most watched television event year after year in the US. This is in conjunction with the onslaught of interviews and snide remarks directed towards her contemporaries (which was clever) and garnered her some much needed attention. This was by no means a “grass roots” movement. I’ve been a fan for years, so no hate just bringing a few things into focus. I have my ticket and CD(they came together btw) and I can’t wait for the show!!

  19. AC April 4, 2012

The only reason it sold that much is because it was offered with every ticket purchase. Who would opt out of getting a free CD with their ticket purchase? No one would and I highly doubt anyone did. Either way you are still paying the same price. A large percentage of people who purchased tickets to her show would have never bought her album. I’m sure that Madonna and her team knew that if they hadn’t used this tactic first week sales would have been weak just like the material featured on it. The real question is if it will be able to hold up during the second week of sales. I doubt it. Just speaking the truth.

  20. aishaaguilerakeys April 4, 2012

Wow. Especially for what I consider to be a bad album.

  21. TheMan April 4, 2012

So they basically brought the cd correct with the ticket? Those are great numbers. Amazon’s album sales aren’t that high really, and itunes albums do good kinda. But the bulk of album sales come from physical albums.

  22. Remey April 4, 2012

Madonna just reminded all of you why she is still the Queen of Pop. (see: Madonna MDNA album sales)

This is EXACTLY what Rihanna did, but Sam refuses to give credit where it’s due. With virtually NO promo, she sold 200,000+ the first week. And she is still selling with NO promo.

This is what a queen does. She never has to explain herself. She laughs and lets her talk WALKthatWALK

  23. Ny April 4, 2012

No Promo???! Um Madonna had a whole superbowl performance not to mention I keep seeing her cd promo Everywhere on tv. Take a seat, and her album is not number 1 in the U.S. check billboard and ITunes. It’s Number one in the UK that’s it, but MDNA flopped

  24. RYK101 April 4, 2012

@NY are you retarded? i’m serious

MDNA is not #1 in iTunes you’re right, but that isn’t an official chart
2nd MDNA IS at #1 in Billboard 200, reading is fundamental

and people say it got no promo because 1st of all the Super Bowl was almost TWO months before the album release, which only contained one song off MDNA, by promo we mean Madonna actually promoting, going to TV shows, performances and s***, she did that for the Super Bowl but not for MDNA, TV and radio ads are promotion by Interscope

  25. RoyalKev April 4, 2012

superbowl performance — video(GMAYL) —clear channel Radio play (every hour on the hour) Interviews/Appearance on Anderson &more — Tour promotion — video (GGW) — snippets released. This looks like promo to me.

  27. tyra April 4, 2012

LOOKS LIKE LADY GAGA AINT THE ONLY ONE THAT CHEATS LOL

  28. Mr.Geezy April 4, 2012

There was promotion for MDNA, it was just done a little differently but Madonna got good looks on the promo side. But congratulations are certainly in order to Madonna for nabbing another # 1 album.

  29. KAT DELUNA FAN April 4, 2012

Eyes see what the spirit wanna see, some people just cant think by themself.

Madonna is a good performer,I have mad respect for her longevity but she treated Gaga like an insecure old b**** she is using some lessy lessers strategies.

Lmao How do you know Kat is not “DAT TALENTED”,You dont know s*** about her.

  30. kijano April 4, 2012

And she deserves it ! congrats

  31. Rick April 4, 2012

Ha she used cunning into her cd’s being sold such a low move for someone her stature
and it still sold this amount
imagine if she did not do this as
KAT DELUNA FAN and ROYALKEV talked about and its the TRUTH
SHE WOULD HAVE SOLD MUCH LESS……
MAKE SOME GROWN UP MUSIC MADONNA…..

  32. Onyx April 4, 2012

All bows down to the Queen, 30 years in the game and still the Queen, her Madgesty is the top of the top, it doesn’t get better than that, when i first heard about the news i read an article in billboard and 5 minutes after they say it was #1, the haters scream FLOP like i mean what do you call success, not all the singers from the 80’s can’t have a #1 album this days, the album would slow down just like Beyonce’s “4”, Gaga’s “Born This Way” and Britney’s “Femme Fatale” but is #1 people C’mon stop with the hate, she’s 53 years old, she’s the only one at her age alongside with Bruce Springsteen who can do this, i will say one more thing Rihanna’s albums may not debut at number 1 but her albums are always in the charts, She did it again B****, i tell you never underestimated the power of Madonna and her fans, we already let the singles flopped but we give her a #1 album and will give her another monster Tour sales.

Long Live to Her Royal Highness Madonna The Queen of Pop!

  33. LJS April 5, 2012

“she’s the only one at her age alongside with Bruce Springsteen who can do this”

Um…Barbra Streisand did it, Cher did it, Sade did it, U2 did it…need I go on?

  34. Amy in Chi-town April 5, 2012

Congrats to Her Madgesty the Queen.

  35. Jules payne April 6, 2012

Yeah but the album still sux …frankly. And in all honesty i would like to see her in concert rather than listen to her recent…s***…if only to wait for the slipped disk..pop! She is a living legend but honestly she should have picked an easier target to promote her album.
