Moving: Monica Talks Love, ‘New Life’ & Creative Evolution

Published: Thursday 19th Apr 2012 by David

In a world where many believe R&B to be a dead and buried genre, Monica remains an exciting exception.

After taking a four year hiatus from music to raise her children, the performer returned to the scene in 2010 with the Gold album ‘Still Standing’.

Showcasing her powers to pull in impressive numbers, the LP welcomed its follow up ‘New Life’ last week and now, in an interview with CBS Atlanta, she opens up like never before.

Her moving interview below…

Great watch.

Though ‘New Life‘ has been a little disappointing on a sales front, it is a much better piece of work than ‘Standing’. Ironic, as the latter received more of a push ( see BET Reality TV series of the same name).

For that very reason, we hope Monica returns to the network to promote the remaining part of ‘Life’s campaign, and serve more interviews like these far more often.

This is why I love Monica. See I am not here for the microwave pop driven inspired R&B. I needed that Classic, that soulful R&B that discusses triumph, love and hurt. This album “New Life” to me is Monica’s best vocal album. She put her heart into this and its a reflection of where she is in her life. I love an artist who is not in it for fame, but more so to inspire others & to share her gift. Monica’s vocal phrasing makes you believe what she is singing, which is rare in music today.

If you do not have a copy of new life I suggest you get a copy its worth it. Only if you are into GREAT SINGING, MINUS THE AUTO-TUNE!!! New Life in stores today.

    Correction:

In a world where many believe R&B to be a dead and buried genre, Monica is not an exciting exception. She is part of the problem, and her mediocre album only contributes to the downfall of R&B.

I like Still Standing album, but this NEW LIFE really sucks…. sorry singing about the same old topics…. and that “it all belongs to me” is the worst song this year, I expected more from them than talking about Mac book, etc

    Love Monica!

  16. GURLLL April 19, 2012

This album is the pits sorry, and still standing was great but stop acting like she was sitting on Billboard Hot 100 or went platinum with that album. Just stop it.

New life is sleepy, inspiring, non creative, and just flat BORING yes she sounds good (when she is not sounding like a frog) But thats about it, Lyrically and production wise this is a piece of garbage compared to her other albums

    and J Boo,

I know you are hating on the Brandy fans because this album flopped but it was to be expected, she had no hits, no anticipation and nobody cared.

Brandy on the other hand has people’s attention… Interest and all around support, because this is Her comeback album, Monica did her’s with still standing so please sit.

You go head and illegally download Brandy’s album, No worried thats what most people did with New life right before they dragged the folder to the recycling bin

    Oop

Still Standing & New Life are two different bodies of work
They are both AMAZING in their respective ways!

No comment. People so negative. There is a difference in having an opinion and being an asshole! Nonetheless New Life is by far one of her best albums. She sanging her ass off. If you never been through nothing then no you wouldnt understand!

Who says that “r&b is a dead and buried genre”?! Please who in their right mind says this? Last time I checked there are still many r&b artists having success and Many r&b fans. Just because the genre isn’t currently #1 on the pop charts like it once was doesn’t make it “dead & buried.” it just means if you like pop music then listen to whatever flavor of the moment is “pop” right now such as dance and country or whatever. If you are a fan of r&b, you will listen to r&b music same as always.

  23. Kyle April 19, 2012

Wow, what a great interview. I’m really shocked by some of the negative comments regarding the album. It’s great R&B music and I think she was really able to show her growth on this album. Monica has always been the type of artist where the production of the song never overpowered her vocals and that’s what I love about her. She seems to have a great head on her shoulders and she speaks the truth. This just made me want to go out and buy another copy of “New Life.”

  24. Jamie April 19, 2012

I’m going to buy another copy. . . maybe 2. I’ll give them away as presents to people I know love SOUL music.

This interview was such a telling one. She’s a genuienly sweet girl who is madly in love with her children and husband.

She’s in a GREAT PLACE in her life. I applaud her!

  25. Bran Star April 20, 2012

The fact that people are actually calling this her best album (very sad to hear IMO) really speaks about the quality of her music…Personally, I think the album is just OK…it’s not bad, but it’s not really good. It’s so-so. The sound, style, and content of the album mirrors that of Still Standing…They’re too close. I think she started recording this album too soon after the last one because I don’t really hear much growth in her vocals or music at all. After The Storm is her best album to me, followed by Miss Thang, then TBIM. Hopefully her next album will be better.
