Pop minx Aubrey O’Day is back!
While the status of her record deal with Universal Music/SRC remains a mystery, the ex-Danity Kane star is cashing in on her revitalised popularity – owed much to her stint on the current season of Celebrity Apprentice.
The result? ‘Wrecking Ball’.
Released to iTunes today, the cut was penned by American Idol alum Pia Toscano and produced by David Hodge (who cooked up Kelly Clarkson‘s ’Because of You’).
Does Ms. O’Day have a hit on her hands? Judge for yourself after the jump…
Aubrey presents quite the conundrum with this one.
Indeed, though a solidly serviceable “Pop” cut, it’s not a patch on the Pop-Urban she so skillfully sewed together on Oxygen’s ‘All About Aubrey’. Material, which by any measure, was a natural progression from her efforts with Danity Kane.
Still, given the “mainstream” audience she amassed courtesy of Apprentice, this is likely more a strategic move to garner success from a broader audience. Whatever works, ay?

TGJ are such bad judges of music. I’m hardly a fan, but this a strong pop/rock effort with of a tinge of country. Fairly similar to Kelly Clarkson, but very catchy. It could be a hit, but I don’t think it will.

@andysays she was always a diamond in the rough, but she can sing, dance and always seemed to be a great judge of music on Making The Band.
Don’t let the plastic surgery and ugly hair fool you. She’s talented.

Aubrey is a man’s name. Swap the “b” for a “d” & for a start. Then learn to sing.

@MARA I’ve never heard of a man named Aubrey? aubrey is clearly a girl name, and while you’re not doing anything she is.

OK, I like Aubrey a lot, I think she’s a great performer, but I don’t like this song and I feel like it hardly has any potential. The only artists that can pull off Billboard hits with this kind of songs are country-pop singers with top notch promo, like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. I don’t think this is Aubrey’s lane. I’ll be waiting for the next single

@G
Drake’s real name is Aubrey so there…now you know of a man who’s named Aubrey. Like Mara said,Aubrey is IN FACT A MALE NAME and Audrey THE FEMALE EQUIVALENT,but ofcourse,no name is ever exclusively mono-sex. I mean shoot, there’s male Ashley’s and Kims. Anyone can name their child whatever they want.
But while i agree with @Mara on that note,it ends there because i actually think Aubrey can sing! and i like the song,so good for her!

I like the song. Hope it coudl atleast become a minor hit for her.
Sadly to say I think she was dropped by Universal, UNLESS they just didn’t pay for this single.
On iTunes you can see she is listed as the songs publisher/copyright holder: (P) Aubrey O’Day, unlike her single “Automatic” which was listed under Universal… Interesting.
I liek the song, because I hear a slight Danity Kane ‘Welcome To The Dollhouse’ feel on it. I coudl even hear parts when Dawn and Aundrea would sing lead or adlibs. If you can’t listen to the outro chorus, and tell me you couldn’t hear which lines/adlibs Dawn would have sung! ! !

@ NoNo,
I agree about hearing the Pop Rock sound of the track, but I hear NO Country on Aubrey’s version. I’m sure the song COULD sound Country but with different instruments and maybe a different voice/Country singer.
@ TGJ,
I don’t know why you think Urban Pop was the route Danity Kane was carving, because it wasn’t! Danity Kane WAS on the Urban Pop/R&B route during their first album, but the girls all and Diddy too I think, were going for an International Dance/Pop sound for their second album… Not Urban Pop.
With that beign said I think this song is def in line with Danity Kane’s musical progression. Not to mention it is a better introducing track, cause its the kind you’d hear her perform on morning shows or late night talk shows, to garner interest.
