Timbaland: “Aaliyah Would Have Been On Beyonce’s Level”

Published: Tuesday 10th Apr 2012 by David

Following her passing in 2001, the question of what Aaliyah could have been was she alive today is a question many still find themselves asking today.

To some, she was on her way to becoming the biggest crossover act of the noughties, rising above her R&B princess status to enjoy the global acclaim the likes of Beyonce & Rihanna enjoy today.

Now, long time friend Timbaland has weighed in on the matter.

His thoughts below…

During an interview with Power 105.1’s ‘The Breakfast Club‘, he confessed:

I think she would have been Beyoncé status ’cause she was the first one who was doing all those things.

Then, on Drake‘s hint at a duet with the late star, he revealed:

I know they tryna drop some  records. I got something that I never put out. I’m trying to get one done now just for the fans, but if [Drake] do it, it should be with me and him and Missy. The best decision what the fans would want to see is all three of us. It can’t be something to make money off of ’cause I think it’s wrong to make money off the dead.

While some choose to dirty the Beyonce/Aaliyah comparison with ‘fan boy’ type comparisons, it is likely the pair would have been friendly rivals if the latter was still here.

Sure, while she was set to make the transition to the A List faster than Knowles was (and give her a run for her money as far as popularity goes), it’s silly to think they couldn’t happily co-exist in the way Prince and Michael did back in the 80s.

Both  talented with immense  potential, it’s a shame we never got to see the pair excel together in the way many would have hoped.

Still, with a legacy of timeless music under her belt, Aaliyah’s mark will live far longer than the conjecture, and to be honest- that’s all that really matters.

Your thoughts?

  2. Ink. April 10, 2012

Aaliyah would be like Brandy & Monica. No More needs to be said.

  3. READY.TO.BE.ENTERTAINED April 10, 2012

    Lies.

  4. therealest April 10, 2012

Excuse me but Aalliyah would have well SURPASSED Beyonces level.

People are suspicious of Beyonces ‘status’ because she copies all her ideas. She is not an originator.

In Aaliyahs short career she was a complete innovator. She would be truely owning the game right now.

    Beyonce would pale in comparison.

  5. Onyx April 10, 2012

No because Aaliyah’s status is far far away from that woman, that woman would never have the tenderly the Baby Girl has.

  6. enrerwj April 10, 2012

To be honest you should disable comments.
We all know how this site gets and people//stans will eventually be rude to the dead and that’s disrepsectful.

    COULD HAVE BEEN
    SHOULD HAVE BEEN
    WOULD HAVE BEEN…

She has passed away, she is gone. Just pray for her instead of bringing her up, trying to throw others in the dirty or compare her. She’s a talent gone. End of story.

  7. Teyah April 10, 2012

I’m sick of the comparisons!!! Everybody should just let it go and get a life! Aaliyah would have faded just like Toni Braxton, Monica, Brandy, Ciara and Ashanti!

  8. Ink. April 10, 2012

Aaliyah wasn’t big in the first place.

but i love how beyonce is the STANDARD.

  9. KAT DELUNA FAN April 10, 2012

I wish people let this girl REST IN F***** PEACE

Anyway,Alicia Keys is here for that.

Cant wait for Timbo,Nelly,Missy and probably Justin ‘s return.

  10. Rated-Next April 10, 2012

    First of all…..

    Beyonce’ came from a Group…Aaliyah did not….

Alliyah garnered success all on her own. She was not a feature Artist.

Before her passing aaliyah sold 30 Million Albums WW. Mind you she was an R&B Star. No major Pop Songs.

I think that People just really miss her….

It’s funny because she has been gone over a Decade yet she is more relevant than most stars ALIVE and releasin Music Today. She is also just as relevant as the Biggest Stars today with no type of Album Video Montage….Nothing….

The question everyone should ask is this:

HAD BEYONCE PASSED IN 2001…WOULD SHE HAVE BEEN CELEBRATED LIKE AALIYAH IS?….TALKED ABOUT…MISSED…ETC….

    URMMMMMMMMMMMMM NO….

LET AALIYAH RIP…ITS CLEAR SHE LEFT ONE HELLA OF A GAP AND SHE IS TERRIBLY MISSED……

LET BEYONCE DO BEYONCE….BUT ITS FUNNY THAT AALIYAH IS THE ONE BEING INTERVIEWED…IM JUST SAYING 😉

  11. Onyx April 10, 2012

Sometimes i feel like if i live in a desert island, i mean what the f*** BEYONCE HAS DONE FOR THE MUSIC INDUSTRY, did i miss something, i mean all this people bowing at her feet like she was something out of this world, she’s talent so what, there are people with more talent, i don’t understand please help me coz i just can’t seems to understand.

  12. Alex April 10, 2012

I do NOT want to see a Drake, Aaliyah, Missy and Timbo collab; I love Aaliyah and Missy but Drake is stupid

  13. Shynlow April 10, 2012

That is true what timbo said! and i’d say even bigger than Beyonce! because Aaliyah was authentic & incredibly talented! i miss her so much! RIP Baby Girl!

  15. Teyah April 10, 2012

    @Rated-Next

She did not sell 30 million albums WW when she was alive! Stop being delusional. Her album sales went up after her death! She wasn’t that big when she was alive. She was on her way to becoming a global super star like Beyonce but then she died!

  16. Ink. April 10, 2012

child Aaliyah wasn’t bigger than brandy lol child with this mess lol

  17. BeyHive April 10, 2012

F*** OFF AL OFF U NO ONE DOES LIKE BEYONCE AND NO OTHERS WOULD OF BE IN HER LEVEL WHOZ AALIYAH to beyonce? King B s the BESTEST

  18. bill April 10, 2012

    Duh Rip king MJ

  19. Nats April 10, 2012

I love Bey to death, but Aaliyah would have slayed her. She may not have been as big as she is now if Aaliyah had not died. Someone had to fill that void, and no one could have done it better than Bey. RIP my Angel! Love u always.

  20. flawda April 10, 2012

At the time of Aaliyah’s death her biggest selling about to date was 2 time platinum, at that time Destiny’s Child album sold somewhere like 9 million. Just stop it, no one knows how Aaliyah’s career would of turned out. Look at Brandy, at one time she was a huge artist and now she can’t even go gold anymore.

This Aaliyah argument is like the Biggie argument, you don’t know how their careers would of panned out. The fans taste change so often that’s impossible to tell who would be relevant.

Plus vocally Beyonce does things that Aaliyah could never though.

  21. MISHKA April 10, 2012

Lies, Lies, Lies. No disrespect to Aaliyah’s memory but this is a lie.

When she died, Aaliyah was on her way to go big, but she wasn’t there yet. Brandy, her one-time rival was more successful than her.

If she was alive, Aaliyah would be just like another 90’s superstar, she’d be where Brandy, Monica or Chili from TLC .

  22. jay April 10, 2012

she would have been over the top ¡ aaliyah had a classy original style that todays girls only can dream of ,plus her songs are way more classy and meaningful than the other diva, but the sho ulda woulda coulda ,doesn´t exist so just let her rest in peace

  23. ROMANHOLIDAY April 10, 2012

People need to stop contradicting them self with this Aaliyah was innovative cause honestly TLC and Xscape Salt N Peppa Mary J was wearing baggy clothes glasses hats etc 1st Aaliyah mimicked Janet then Ciara came alone and mimicked them both do i feel Aaliyah would have been as big as Bey no if she was still alive i believe Aaliyah would have left music far behind and be doing movies like Latifah and JAnet releasing songs only on soundtracks

  24. flawda April 10, 2012

PS Aaliyah has sold about 17 mil worldwide, stop posting baseless WIKIPEDIA as a source for your information. Soundscan got her at 17 mil

  25. Onyx April 10, 2012

I can’t this site and her fans go to the point to shade a dead person just to make this woman looks relevant or iconic, this is too much have some respect.

  26. Ink. April 10, 2012

Ppl always try to say Aaliyah was classy.. NO SHADE being married at the age of 15 to a 25 year OLD MAN isn’t CLASSY

    • Carmen cruz July 2, 2022

      I know that’s right.

    • Carmen cruz July 2, 2022

She wasn’t classy at all, not being married to a man twice your age.

  27. MISHKA April 10, 2012

*she’d be where Brandy, Monica or Chili from TLC are today.

  28. the real deal April 10, 2012

this site is a joke if Aaliyah was alive Beyonce would faded just like Ciara and Ashanti! beyonce stealing ppl acts and videos the only reason she big is gay gays like her and want to be her and white girls can say they like r&b and that keeping it real do the math and if 2pac and biggie was here jay-z and lil wayne would be lost in the game

  29. BeyHive April 10, 2012

Ok let’s compare Beyonce first album DANGEROUSLY IN LOVE debuted on #1 317,000 first week sales Aaliyah first album
Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number debuted #18 Beyonce second album BDAY #1 first week sales 510,000 Aaliyah second album One in a million #18 Beyonce Sasha Fierce #1 480,000 sales Beyonce 4 #1 315,000 who’s Aaliyah to beyonce? Beyonce sold over 130 million records worldwide Aaliyah uhhhh 45million ahahahah she will or would of or could of be like beyonce madness KING B S BETTER NO 1 will ever do it like her

  30. Onyx April 10, 2012

All the people comparing a dead person to someone alive is a shame.

  31. Girrrl April 10, 2012

Aaliyah would have been a big movie star. Those matrix movies would have solidified that. Ciara wouldn’t have a career.

  32. QueenOfTheNavy April 10, 2012

    How horrid.
Look how low these honeyless Bees are stooping to prove their point. Low down dirty b****** you are!
You have no respect for the dead and will shade the deceased just to protect the name of that thieving voodoo princess you call your fave.

Aaliyah was ten times the woman Beyonce is because she had class and integrity, she was beautiful and understated, she didn’t steal peoples ideas and smile in their faces once she had done it.

She didnt wear a prosthetic bump over her stomach to give the impression she was more pregnant than she actually was.
She didnt marry a man who stabbed a man, beat up his former girlfriends and then turn around and judge Rihanna for being in love with Chris Brown.

And last but not f****** least, Aaliyah worked her way into the industry and stayed there by talent alone. Beyonce worked her way into the industry and had her father backstab anybody he felt was in her way.

    So to answer the question…..

No, Aaliyah would NOT be on Beyonces level because Aaliyah would have flown above that witch and her non #1 single having broom.

  33. WHUT April 10, 2012

Wow. Just wow @ these Fossil-yonce stans. They really have no limits at all.

Look at them going for a dead woman’s throat box with such venom, such spite, such pure vitriolic disrespect all because a few posters highlighted that the woman was an innovator to which she was, an original to which she was and an extremely talented artist to which she was.

Nothing is sacred with these people. There are no lines drawn. SMH.

They disrespect legends, icons and now even the dead all in the name of a woman who wont even say a simple hello to them on twitter. My heart breaks. *Wipes Tear*

  34. WHUT April 10, 2012

@Queen and ONYX I have now seen it all.

  35. the real deal April 10, 2012

    QueenOfTheNavy lol you right

  36. GetChoLife April 10, 2012

Like I said to someone on Youtube yesterday. When comparing Aaliyah to Beyonce people always try to downplay Destiny’s Child success. Destiny’s Child was highly successful before Aaliyah even passed. The Writings on The Wall went 8X platinum by 2001. Survivor had sales of over 630 thousand first week. And Destiny’s Child won a Grammy before Aaliyah passed. I have receipts for every single claim I’ve made. Aaliyah was super talented but like most artists that pass at a young age, they become more famous after they’re gone.

  37. Onyx April 10, 2012

    @WHUT
That’s my point, i would never think they would go so far.

  38. King Tasha April 10, 2012

Slightly true…B still would’ve been inches above her because of the stronger vocal ability and stage presence…Aaliyah and Beyoncé would have been buddies, I just know it..they both remind me of each other in interviews..not competing with no one but themselves and staying grounded…MTVHITS gave me LIFE playing “greatest Aaliyah videos”…Aaliyah couldve kept “the one I gave my heart to” and Beyoncé couldve kept “if I were a boy” unless performed live of course i.e. Grammy performance

  39. Stephen April 10, 2012

Musically, Beyonce would more likely have been more successful, but Aaliyah would have transitioned into movies. Who likes “Steady Ground” by Aaliyah?

  40. WATCHA LOOKN AT April 10, 2012

Aaliyah would have been a bigger than Beyonce when it came to acting get movie roles but Aaliyah would not have been as big as Beyonce Vocally/performance wise HELL NO i mean Aaliyah was beautiful but there still would be Beyonces and Rihannas but there wouldn’t be Ciaras and Ashantis…….but we all are listening to Timbaland of course he would say something like that this is the same guy that said Keri Hilson is on Beyonce level and question WHERE IN THE HELL IS KERI HILSON

  41. King Tasha April 10, 2012

AND KEEP KE$HA-RIHANNA OUT OF THIS WHEN DISCUSSING LEGENDS AND SALES, REPLACE HER WITH GAGA WHEN MENTIONING SALES OR SOME S***

Are you serious??? Its the Aaliyah stans that won’t let this go! That’s so disrespectful to her! Whenever something about Aaliyah comes on TV or if some famous singer talks about her, the Aaliyah stans start the “If Aaliyah Was Alive Beyonce Would……” I’m sick of this s***! The BeyHive are only here to defend their queen!

  45. t April 10, 2012

Lmao aaliyah stans are the most delusional stanbase hands down. Destinys child was waaaaaaay bigger than aaliyah while shr was alive. Aaliyah could never see queen bey.

  47. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) April 10, 2012

    Of course she would have.

Aaliyah was HUGE. Some of the love deprived teenagers that post on this site probably haven’t checked their facts. Aaliyah was one of the most successful r n’b artists of all time. She had 3 albums in a row going triple platinum in the US and she sold incredibly well worldwide with no promo. She’s called the queen of urban pop for a reason. Aaliyah started it all…And she’s still missed. 2002 was going to be her year wih 3 movies coming out, lots of campaigns and a smash album if she hadn’t passed away…

Beyonce herself has declared that she respects Aaliyah. Hell, DC were covering Aaliyah songs back in the day!! Timbaland didn’t say anything bad either, but some of you are just looking for a reason to be negative. SMH…

  48. kingphoenix9 April 10, 2012

    @Onyx

You need to concerned about the second-fastest drop in album sales EVER and about you know whose hip during this upcoming tour…

    @Whut

How are you huny? Pressed as ever huh? Do you think that the singles kween will be able to get a #1 with her latest effort “Take Care”? that video was very….hmmmm….emo

  49. RoyalKev April 10, 2012

I love Aaliyah, she was definitely coming into her own before she died. To be honest though, she was struggling with her last studio album right before her death. I brought it the first day it was out and I remember how surprised I was to see that it wasn’t doing so hot initially. The album was fire, don’t get me wrong, but sales increased after she died.
Also, Aaliyah wasn’t bigger than Brandy. Her and Monica were neck and neck, but I do believe Aaliyah’s star was rising. Also Brandy was in the movies first, not Aaliyah. So with that being said, I don’t see how Bran & Mo would be the only 2 in that bunch rebuilding their careers, while Aaliyah would be soaring high above them throughout the last decade. Toni Braxton was bigger than all 3 and she’s not making an impact at all right now(which is a shame). The Aaliyah thing, doesn’t make sense.

Now, mary J Blige wasn’t as big as Toni or Bran and she had the most longevity. Her day came along a little later too. So, I have to think of it in these terms with Aaliyah, but it just seems so unrealistic. What I will say is that Aaliyah had enough talent to make a comeback (just like a few people that were truly gifted are from her era do) and if she didn’t go off to the dark side I would put my money on betting that she would be relevant, well respected and rebuilding like some of her peers right now.

  50. Hot! April 10, 2012

After listening I really am starting to like Tim as a person he seem like he went thru alot and is still by the grace of God pulling thru and doing his thing. I see thatgrapejuice has to use the drama of Beyonce and Aaliyah to rile up views when in fact this Man has so much more to say. Oh well tommorow hopefully will be a better day.

  51. Onyx April 10, 2012

    @WHUT
I agree, those people are Talifans.

  52. minajeesty April 10, 2012

she was good, but looking back on the videos i think ciara is a better dancer than both aaliyah and beyonce. and beyonce is better vocally than aaliyah. aaliyah was still really good, none of us know what would have happened. nobody really expected beyonce to own the 00s decade back in 99/2000.

  53. Kemar April 10, 2012

You people are so ignorant. I love Aaliyah & Beyonce. You guys are trying to compare them when they are two different artists from two different eras. Beyonce had the advantage of being in a group, being over-exposed and THEN going solo. The group was a platform for her to become a superstar. Aaliyah had many accomplishments and did well for herself without being overexposed. They are both talented and had love for each other. I don’t understand why the Aaliyah fans and Beyonce fans always talk s*** to one another. I am a HUGE Aaliyah fan (even have a tattoo #dontjudgeme lol) and I’m a HUGE Beyonce fan. I just think its ignorant to say what couldve been and what is than to just honor their legacy and the examples they set forth. To the Beyonce fans, as a Bey fan I know y’all know that Beyonce’s stock has lowered a little since the release of 4 along with the constant rumors and lawsuits she’s plagued with all the time. I’m NOT hating on Beyonce, I’m just being an honest true fan and stating what it is. Still love you Beyonce and I’m here to be a REAL fan!

  54. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) April 10, 2012

    @ROYALKEV

The album was near platinum when Aaliyah died. The reason why it hadn’t already reached platinum was because of the confusion surrounding the second single. Her label promoted ‘More Than A Woman’ but then they scrapped it to release ‘Rock The Boat’ which was more suitable for the summer. That last minute decision caused a decrease in sales which was about to be resolved during the last quarter of 2001 when the single releases would be on point…

Besides, her previous multi-platinum albums didn’t take off immediately either. They both debuted out of the top 10 with low first week sales, but they were slow burners, which is why her music is timeless. She was never the kind of artist that had front loaded sales, she sustained her sales for MONTHS, though. Which is how an album that peaked in No.18 managed to sell 3 million copies just in the US 😉

‘ΛΛΙΥΛΗ’ was her best first week in terms of the chart position and in terms of the actual number I believe, so its performance was anything but disappointing 🙂

  55. YOOSONDALOOSE April 10, 2012

Poor Aaliyah, her music is so timeless, she was so ahead of the game and so underrated easily the most underrated star of her generation.

    R.I.P. Aaliyah

  61. I was there….so I Know April 10, 2012

This is just timbaland’s and Aaliyah’s still depressed fans opinion.
The truth of the matter is I was in the 8th grade when Aaliyah died.
I remember there was a girl in my engineering class and she said”Oh yeah I heard aaliyah died,….Well at least it wasn’t Destiny’s Child some one said and the class muttered in agreement.”

Aaliyah was never on beyonce’s level.
She was nt even on brandy and Monica’s level. To be honest the closest act to her or that she was outselling as far as t*** black female stars was mya.

That’s why I Hate when someone dies. They always try to make them more special than they really are.

The only ppl who believe this are haters.

    SMH at this whole article

Timbaland didn’t even try to start anything, but some of you are so drama obsessed 🙄

If you disagree, just don’t post anything or post something simple and go. Like seriously? 3-paragraph essays to discredit an artist that passed away 11 years ago. Pathetic much?

  65. RoyalKev April 10, 2012

    @ Asap
I respect your input and even agree with you often, but I’m not convinced with this one. Aaliyah’s ‘Rock da Boat’ and ‘More than a woman’ singles/videos would have helped her era out, but those songs could have easily gone unnoticed at the time. Brandy came hard with ‘Talk About Our Love’ and Mya did too with ‘Whoa’ and they didn’t go platinum right after 2001. Aaliyah was definitely hot, but i don’t see how it would be so easy for her to outdo Bey. I think some stars (especially the really beautiful ones) have to work a bit harder than the rest to win after their no longer new. In my mind Aaliyah had what it takes to always remain relevant though.

  71. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) April 10, 2012

    @ROYALKEV

I never said she was going to outdo Beyonce. Maybe she would, maybe she wouldn’t, but that’s too hypothetical to discuss. All I know is that in 2001 Aaliyah came REALLY hard with her 3rd album, which got massive critical acclaim and good sales before her death and then went on to be considered one of the best r n’b albums of that decade. Aside from that, there are many could have/ should have scenarios, but since Beyonce as a solo act and Aaliyah were never in direct competition, I won’t get into all that. They both excelled at what they did and got their time to shine.

As far as Brandy and Mya are concerned, Brandy’s ‘TAOL’ wasn’t that much of a good comeback granted that uptempos and hard basslines were ruling back then and Mya’s ‘Woo’ was solid and charted well but she still didn’t promote it and she released it after a 3-year hiatus, so her audience was gone. Both were in a different place in 2004 and 2003 respectively compared to Aaliyah in 2001.

Aaliyah and Beyonce are both amazing performers. Aaliyah is the better artist/innovator. Her music is/was also outstanding. Both can sing. Aaliyah was more versatile. Grammys have not a thing to do with it. Aaliyah was doing damn good for an r&b artist that was really about to breakout.

  76. TheMan April 10, 2012

    ______
Some of you people (NAVY) are a joke. In no way is anyone disrespecting AAliyah’s memory. Are facts suppose to change because she has passed? I am confused? So if the Kween of the Navy were to pass away tomorrow are we suppose to ignore the fact that MOTS, AGLM and RR were flop ass albums? Or that she sets bad examples for abuse victims by returning and working with hers? Girl bye with the Navy trying to be holier than thou. AAliayh was not perfect, she has her past like everyone else and that will not change. As an artist she borrowed as well reference TLC for the styling but she was still AAliyah. I do believe if she was still alive she would be a global superstar(Music and films), she was beautiful in and out. Like someone else said I love how Bey is the standard for the lessors lol.

  78. Carl April 10, 2012

  84. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) April 10, 2012

    @YEAH I SAID IT

‘ΛΛLIYΛH’ had been certified gold 2 weeks before she died. In its first 6 weeks, it had outsold both Brandy’s and Monica’s third albums, so she was ahead at the time. There is no reason to compare her to other artists actually, but don’t try to discredit her. If she wasn’t successful, she wouldn’t be remembered, like many other artists that die every year. But Aaliyah is one of the most heavily remembered stars. BET, VH1 and blogs are still talking about her and paying homage, 11 years later. So don’t come for her.

  85. therealhonesttruth April 10, 2012

I honestly the only Aaliyah song that ever pops in my head is i miss you and she was laready dead when that was released. There is a big difference between potential and kinetic energy. Aaliyah showed her potential energy. She hinted at the things she was able to do. Beyonce has shown her kinetic energy. Beyonce showed us what she was able to do. You can’t compare what Aaliyah could have done to what Beyonce has actually done. Beyonce has gone fa. First she was shitting on the charts with Destiny’s Child then she went solo three years after Aaliyah and did amazing things.

  86. ILOVEKELLY April 10, 2012

On the real Beyonce didn’t do nothing major in R&B or music only some pop songs that only girls liked. She has a great voice and is a great performer (only artist that can sing and dance live) but she aint done nothing big for music and she cant act on the real. So yes Aaliyah would have been bigger even though her voice aint as strong as Beyonce but she made hits songs loved by men and woman , had mad swag didn’t had to be naked and she was a great actress. R.I.P Aaliyah because you are truly the queen of R&B..

  87. therealhonesttruth April 10, 2012

That’s one thing i don’t like that people say. Beyonce is always naked. Beyonce can give a performances of a slow song fully clothed. It’s just a stage presences. Just think about it. Imagine beyonce doing crazy in love in a full length tom ford dress.

  88. Oh Baby(B****** Will Deal) April 10, 2012

Ofcourse this is a Beyonce WORLD and all these other starlets are just….there… like all the other planets in the universe! Beyonce is the PINNACLE/ THE STANDARD. However people should just stop comparing Aaliyah to Beyonce or any other singer out now for that matter! let the woman rest in peace! geez!

  89. therealhonesttruth April 10, 2012

People just need to admit it. They hate Beyonce. Beyonce is one of the most successful female black women in music of our time but just out of spite people don’t give her the recognition she deserves. You guys say Beyonce was too pop and the reason for that is because black people never liked her. Especially black women. I am happy for Beyonce that she doesn’t have to depend on the Bet Awards to push an album. The mtv awards and the Grammys welcome her with open arm . Her own race turned their back on her and she still at the end of day tries to make people like her.

  93. K.I.S.S. April 10, 2012

  94. therealhonesttruth April 10, 2012

Beyonce is so far ahead of her. Especially in cross over appeal. I don’t her white people singing Aaliyah. To be good you have to break barriers. Latinos Blacks Asians Europeans Black People all know Beyonce. Beyonce can go to any country in the world that is not a third world country and people will recognize her. I can’t say the say for Aaliyah. Yes she is highly cherished by blacks but outside of the black community she is nothing. Beyonce is a international super star without even adding in her sales, #1’s, or things like that. Aaliyah even if alive today couldn’t do what Beyonce did. Which is break race barriers.

Shut the f*** up WHINERS! Beyonce fans are as pressed as a freshly flat-ironed weave. Aaliyah would have crushed every w**** in sight if she was still alive. She PRE-dated Beyonce and starred in film way before her. It’s NOT a comparison (but we can get into that, if you really want to) but a way to say what trajectory Aaliyah was on. It’s a compliment to Beyonce!

Beyonce crushes the current whores so obviously, so tremendously so completely, that there she cannot be compared to them. Longevity is what he was commenting on, and Aaliyah would have had that, as BEYONCE does.

  97. Edward April 10, 2012

Aaliyah was very successful as a music artist and upcoming actress. But she was tragically underrated when she was alive. Billboard NEVER acknowledged most of her songs that i think were hits

(Are You That Somebody #21,One In A Million #25, Rock The Boat #14, More Than A Woman #25, Come Over#32) They were always so picky whenever it came to Aaliyah for reasons i will never know but there was always hope because she could sing and perform well despite what some people may think. I know for a fact she would be an A list actress right now with an Oscar or at least nomination. She was venturing more into films.

  98. therealhonesttruth April 10, 2012

I’ve seen Japnesse people sing Beyonce’s song when they don’t even know how to speak English or understand it. People in Russia Germany India can sing a whole Beyonce song and not even know what they are singing about. That’s what you call a super star. Aaliyah is great at what she does but why do people always try to bring Beyonce down a level.

I’VE SAID THIS MANY TIMES, SHE WOULD DEFINITELY BE HUGE TODAY AND PROBABLY BEYOND BEYONCE. SHE WAS ALREADY A SUCCESSFUL SOLO ARTIST AND WAS THE TRUE TRIPLE THREAT OF HER TIME. SHE WAS A GREAT SINGER, ACTOR, AND DANCER. SHE WASN’T OVER EXPOSED OR SEXED UP. SHE DIDN’T EVEN GET S*** UNTIL HER 20’S ON PURPOSE. SHE WAS SIGNED ON TO DO MANY MORE FILMS BEFORE HER PASSING (HONEY, SPARKLE, SOME KINDA BLUE, THE MATRIX SEQUELS) AND BEYONCE WOULD BE PLAYING CATCH UP. AALIYAH HAD A GREAT VOICE AND FOR THOSE WHO ARE HER TRUE FANS KNOW THAT SHE DIDN’T SHOW OFF EVERYTHING SHE COULD REALLY DO. HER HIGH NOTES WERE NOT THE PEAK OF HER VOICE. IF YOU LISTEN TO “GIVING IN” THAT SHE RECORDED FOR SPARKLE THEN YOU KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT. WHITNEY HOUSTON (WHO IS THE VOCAL QUEEN) WOULD HAVE NEVER HIRED AALIYAH FOR SPARKLE IF SHE COULDN’T SING AND SING WELL. IF THAT’S THE CASE THEN WHY DIDN’T SHE HIRE BEYONCE? BECAUSE BEYONCE COULDN’T ACT (CARMEN WAS RELEASED AROUND THIS TIME TO VALIDATE THIS REASON) BUT BEYONCE IS A HUGE PERFORMER AND A GREAT SINGER. I DO SOMETIMES FEEL BEYONCE OVER SINGS AND AALIYAH DIDN’T HAVE TO DO THAT. SHE HAD A TONE AND A VOICE AND A DISTINCT SOUND THAT COULD GO WITH ANY BEAT AND SHE DIDN’T HAVE TO OVER SING TO STAND OUT, SHE JUST DID, BUT SHE COULD EASILY DO IT IF SHE WANTED TO. AALIYAH WAS ALREADY A HOUSEHOLD NAME (OFF OF R&B ONLY) AND AN URBAN POP PRINCESS AND SHE WOULD BY NOW BE A HUGE POP STAR FAR ABOVE HER RIVALS. SHE HAD IT ALL AND GOT PLACES BECAUSE OF HER TALENT, NOT JUST BECAUSE OF HER NAME OR BRAND. SHE EARNED HER CAREER. BEYONCE IS HANDED MOVIE ROLES BECAUSE OF WHO SHE IS. AALIYAH WOULD BE FAR ABOVE EVERYONE, AS SHE ALREADY WAS. MTV’S DIARY, AND THE BEHIND THE MUSIC SPECIALS DOCUMENTED EVERYTHING SHE DID THE BEST. SHE WAS THE YOUNGEST PERSON TO PERFORM AT THE OSCAR’S AND HER CAREERS WASN’T BUILT OFF OF HITS AND SINGLES, IT WAS BUILT OFF OF GOOD MUSIC, GREAT ALBUMS AND STELLAR WORK. THIS IS COMING FROM A HUGE DESTINY’S CHILD FAN AND BEYONCE FAN AND A HUGE AALIAYH FAN. THEY WOULD BOTH BE BIG AND HUGE AND GREAT BUT ON TWO DIFFERENT LEVELS, AALIYAH BEING THE BIGGER LEVEL AND THEY WOULD BE IN TWO DIFFERENT LANES.

People need to stop forreal with comparing Aaliyah to Beyonce. Aaliyah was a beautiful and talented woman, and i loved her music. Let’s be honest though Beyonce is an all around entertainer. Yes Aaliyah sang and dance, but it was no where near what Beyonce does live. If you going to compare Aaliyah do it to someone like a Janet Jackson. Beyonce is a way better singer then Aaliyah was, and to me you just can’t compare I’m sorry. We don’t know what Aaliyah would have been face with in her music. If i’m being honest Aaliyah became more mainstream after her death. She was Known more in the Black Community and was just starring to appeal to the so called white audience. She i believe would have been big in movies.

  106. IKNOWTHETRUTH April 10, 2012

AALIYAH’S LAST PIECES OF WORK CAME OUT OVER A DECADE AGO AND THEY LOOK AS IF THEY’VE JUST BEEN RELEASED TODAY AND ALSO I’D LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT HER WORK HAS BEEN REPEATED BY MANY FEMALES. Beyonce always had a record deal. I hate how people try to act like Beyonce and Destiny’s Child are two different things. Beyonce sold a lot of records with Destiny’s Child then she went on solo. Beyonce is not the best but she is way better than Aaliyah. The only people keeping Aaliyah relevant are Timberland Missy Elliot and Drake. Without them her name would have decayed faster than her corpse. People keep keep talking about movies. Nobody cares this is about music. And last time i checked Aaliyah nor beyonce have one any awards pertaining to acting. As matter beyonce has been nominated and Aaliyah hasn’t so f*** her acting. Beyonce would do the EOT stomp all over this b****. She is nothing. Go look at Beyonce’s awards and nominations then look at Aaliyah’s. Go look at the greats who have complimented Beyonce. But for Aaliyah not even a peep. Like i said before the only people who are still riding Aaliyah are barely relevant in music anymore. Missy & Timberland. Remember timbaland supports Keri Hilson and look at her Grammy-less ass.

Beyonce outdid her in acting. Beyonce has been nominated for acting while Aaliyah has no nominations ever. and i know for a fact that Beyonce is not the best actor.

I don’t stan for Beyonce. I stan for credibility. There are very few people who do hard work but are constantly but down. Beyonce is one of them. It’s sad to say that she might not be truly appreciated until she dies. Just look at Micheal people insulted him his whole life even though her had the awards. People didn’t realize how influential he was until he died.

HER VOICE, HER STAGE PRESENCE, HER LEGACY ISN’T ANYWHERE NEAR BEYONCE’S… AND WOULD HAVE NOT BEEN IF SHE WAS ALIVE…

WOMEN LIE, MEN LIE, NUMBERS DONT…

I totally agree i think baby girl would have been a league of her own. I feel she would have went the JLO route where she focused on movies and just killed the roles and def a contract with some agency modeling and tons of endorsements because the girl was just too pretty.

  133. David April 10, 2012

Some of the comments on here are borderline sickening, disturbing, ignorant, childish, closed minded and young minded….On both ends.. I wish people will stop comparing these two. If Prince and Michael Jackson can exist in the same industry then Aaliyah and Beyonce can.

  134. therealhonesttruth April 10, 2012

But prince and micheal are close in relation. they are both very big stars worldwide.

Beyonce and Aaliyah are not similiar. They are on two different levels of success.

    Do not get it twisted.

It’s like comparing a humming bird to an eagle. One will go from flower to flower getting food. An one will snatch a baby goat off the side of a mountain.

  135. KillBill92 April 10, 2012

Beyonce would’ve been on another level than Aaliyah. Destiny’s Child was bigger than Aaliyah, and Beyonce is bigger than DC. #ThatsAll

  138. Kemar April 10, 2012

To this day, I will NEVER understand why Beyonce & Aaliyah are being compared. They are in two different lanes. Beyonce is a mega pop star. Aaliyah was a mega R&B star who was branching off into acting. Everyone is comparing their levels of success when Aaliyah didn’t want the overnight success that Beyonce experienced. Aaliyah wanted to work her way up, work on her craft and become an even greater entertainer overall (as evident when looking from the beginning to end) whereas Beyonce had the platform of Destiny’s Child who came up with catchy singles to keep them relevant. For you guys information (and no shade to Beyonce or Destiny’s Child) but DC’s first album FLOPPED! They had 1 hit off of it. 2 DC’s second album was only successful because of the drama and controversy surrounding the lineup changes. Yes, Beyonce is an AMAZING performer and I’m not discrediting her but discrediting and bad mouthing Aaliyah is unnecessary. I don’t know why people want to put them against each other so much. Beyonce even said HERSELF that she looked up to Aaliyah (noted in interviews and stated in Aaliyah’s biography, where Beyonce made comments about Aaliyah). instead of taking away from Aaliyah’s legacy just shut up. And for the Aaliyah fans, stop it as well. There is no reason why they should be compared. If anything just say they could’ve co-existed like how Beyonce & Lady Gaga/P!nk/who ever else does today!

  139. JAY April 10, 2012

Weren’t Brandy and Monica way more successful than Aaliyah back in the 90’s and look where they ended up now…

  140. HIVE MAKE ME VOMIT April 10, 2012

    Yall are PIGS!

    R.I.P Aaliyah.

  141. Gilberto April 10, 2012

Aaliyah is definitely a reference of early 90’s R&B. I don’t think she would’ve been as big as Beyoncé if she were alive though. Honestly, Aaliyah wasn’t even on Brandy’s level back then. Brandy was one of the first multi-formated singers. During her golden days, she had successful albums, hit singles, her own tv show, endorsements, successful movies. But it’s hard to know what could’ve been, Aaliyah was starting to get noticed by pop radios, general public and international market when she died.
I really think Timbaland would’ve made Aaliyah a international star. All the hits he produced to Nelly Furtado (Loose era), he would’ve given to Aaliyah and she would have been really big.

  142. irene46 April 11, 2012

you all spewing about aaliyah fading like ciara, toni braxton, ashanti, monica, brandy etc are talking epic trash.

aaliyah was going to blow up big because she was loved by some heavy hitters set on making her a triple threat (singing, dancing and acting).

she starred in ‘romeo must die”, “queen of the damned”, was slated to be in a matrix sequel and whitney houston wanted her for the movie ‘sparkle’.

aaliyah was a huge talent and had all the right people backing her so no way was she going to be a flash in the pan.

  143. SHAME ! April 11, 2012

YOU BEYONCE FANS ARE SO MATERIALISTIC , HOW DARE YOU COMPARE SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN DEAD SINCE 2001 , ALL HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS WERE DONE AND OVER AT THE AGE OF 22 , UM , BEYONCE WHO IS STILL MAKING MOVES IS ALMOST 31 YEARS OLD …. GRAMMYS AND ALBUM SALES DOES NOT MAKE YOU “BETTER” THAN ANYONE ELSE… AALIYAH HAD SPARKLE , THE MATRIX RELOADED & MATRIX AND HONEY ALL IN THE WORKS FOR HER TO FILM AT SUCH AN EARLY AGE , SHE DIDN’T OVERDUE DO IT , STAGE PRESENCE??? THAT TAKES TIME ….AND BEYONCE HAS GROWN WITH HERS AS WELL …. AALIYAH HAS HAD MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS , BUT YOU GUYS HATE FOR PEOPLE TO BE IN COMPETITION WITH BEYONCE , EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON , AND IF AALIYAH , BRANDY & MONICA DIDN’T EXIST ….. OR NEVER BECAME SINGERS…. DESTINY’S CHILD WOULDN’T HAVE CAME OUT OR EVERYTHING WOULD BE CHANGED , MUSIC WOULD BE SO DIFFERENT ….SO IF YOU LOVE THE PERSON YOU ARE DEFENDING , RESPECT THE PEOPLE THAT CAME BEFORE THEM , ESPECIALLY THE GIRLS THAT WERE TEENAGERS ….. BECAUSE ALL OF THEM HAVE A PIECE OF EACH OTHER IN THEM ..AND UM DESTINY’S CHILD LOVES AALIYAH ….AND SHE LOVED THEM BACK …TOOK THEM OUT TO EAT AT ROSCOE’S CHICKEN AND WAFFLES AND EVERYTHING …SO WHY YA’LL SO DAMN MAD AND THE POINT IS ….EVERYTHING BEYONCE HAS DONE TO THIS DAY …AALIYAH WAS GOING TO BE THE PERSON THE DO THAT FIRST …. SHE WAS THE YOUNGEST AND ONLY TEENAGER TO EVER PERFORM HER SONG AT THE OSCAR’S AMONG OTHER THINGS…. BUT PLEASE…. LET HER REST IN PEACE , YOUR IGNORANCE IS NOT NEEDED …

  144. MRDIVABITCH April 11, 2012

    Not singing pure R&B.
R&B just isn’t that popular outside the USA or countries with a substantial black population.
Plus, her vocals were nice she didn’t have Beyonce’s vocal ability.

  145. MelodyMami1489 April 11, 2012

I personally think Beyonce would have been flipping hamburgers if Aaliyah was still alive. You can’t even compare their talent. Beyonce music WILL NEVER TOUCH anything Aaliyah has ever made. Her music is classic and if she was still alive I don’t think Beyonce would have been able to keep up. Her music is just too b******* for that. I don’t think Beyonce has the talent to be famous now, so if Aaliyah was alive it would just seal her uniform at McDonalds or Burger King.

RIP aaliyah , i won’t say ” she would have been on , she would have did … ” , the girl is dead , f*****’ dead , let her RIP and let it go. k ?

oh and no one’s spot is safe in the music industry to begin with , so …..

  147. Kacey April 11, 2012

Yes, I think Aaliyah would have been on Beyonce’s level. Aaliyah had a this presence about her, she had this natural beauty about her that all the guys adored even the white guys. Yall can’t forget that. Aaliyah had signed on to do the Matrix 2 before she died. Yes my girl was about to crossover big time in movies & music. Could yall imagine if her and Justin Timberlake would’ve done a collaboration together, that s*** would’ve been crazy. Plus Brandy would’ve been made her comeback a long time ago, but bad decision making and that accident caused her a few setbacks. Plus Aaliyah & Brandy would’ve both been on top because ghetto were both taking diverse roles in their careers. Beyonce just got lucky through the years. I’m old school pop culture junkie. Timbaland knows what he’s talking about!

  148. glum April 11, 2012

While it’s true that she would have been on Beyonce’s level, I still think she might end up just topping the R&B charts as time went along.

i like aaliyah, but her dancing skills werent as good as ciara and her vocals werent as powerful as beyonce. i dont give dead singers a sympathy point. she was good, nobody knows how her career would have panned out, but lets not fool ourselves.

  153. Andre April 11, 2012

Think about it aaliyah was amazing but she was nothing compared to Beyonce, Beyonce does everything acts very well sings amazing and she is the only person who can dance while sounding brilliant live when theres another proformer like that then we can talk about Beyonce levels but for now beyonce is above everyone in the industry

  154. aynon April 11, 2012

aaliyah would never have been on beyonce’s level. she couldnt dance like beyonce, she couldnt sing like beyonce, she didn’t sell like beyonce. lets compare aaliyahs 7 year career to the first 7 years of beyonce’s career.

    Aaliyah 1994-2001

    #1 Albums – 1
    #1 Songs – 1
    Grammys – 0

    Beyonce (inc DC)1997-2004

    #1 Albums – 3
    #1 Songs – 6
    Grammys – 8

if Beyonce had died in 2004 she would have accomplished far more in 7 years than Aaliyah did.

Aaliyah had no worldwide hits – Try Again was big in the US but not really anywhere else it certainly wasn’t on the scale of Crazy In Love or Independent Woman.

Then look at the acts who tried to fill Aaliyah’s spot…

    Ciara
    Cassie
    Rihanna (old records)

Aaliyah as good as she was, was easily replaceable. there is no other Beyonce, noone can do what she does. there have already been 3 other Aaliyah’s.

the fact of the matter is if beyonce died in 2004 she would have gone down in history as being the front woman of the best American Girl Band of All time, and for Crazy In Love the best song of the 21st century so far with 8 grammys and 6 #1s to prove it.

  155. lol April 11, 2012

keri hilson is the the one walking in aaliyahs footsteps ..KERI HILSON IS THE NEXT AALIYAH BECAUSE SHE WORKS WITH TIMBALAND AND MAKES THE SAME TYPES OF MUSIC AAILYAH DID.

  156. lol April 11, 2012

KERI HILSON IS PICKING UP WHERE AALIYAH LEFT OFF THANKS TO TIMBALAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  157. Tosh April 11, 2012

Its hard to say what a deceased person would be…I liked Aaliyah! She was sweet, had a sweet voice and she could dance…and I think she acts better than Bey!

I believe the difference between them is Beyonce trained to be a iconic performer & multi-threat! Aaliyah did what she loved! Is either wrong?? Certainly not, but that is the certain level of stardom that seperates them.

Either way…I would have loved to see the 2012 Aaliyah but because I can’t I embrace what I remember! 🙂

  158. therealhonesttruth April 11, 2012

LOL your right. Keri is the continuation of Aaliyah. I star that is nothing outside of the black community. Loved by many and has talent but has absolutely no stage presence. Keri is the Aaliyah of today.

Sidenote. How can Keri write a number single for someone else but she has yet to write herself one. *cough *cough. (intense shade)

  159. Jasmine April 11, 2012

I agree with Timbaland but I also agree they could have co-existed in the spotlight. One of the main differences with Aaliyah and Beyonce is that when Aaliyah was interviewed or performed there was a humbleness and sincerity that shines and is one of the many reasons she is missed by many. That is not there with Beyonce. I don’t like all the negativity in many of the posts above because everyone should live in reality….Aaliyah is past and died in 2001. Beyonce began her solo career in 2003 so one does not have anything to do with the other. Realistically, any comparisons do not make since because you cannot compare an artist that has past with the accolades of an artist who is living.

  160. ImJustsayin April 11, 2012

Don’t yall DARE tell that lie Keri is not following in any footsteps of Aaliyah nor is she a continuation of her. Aaliayh was different and made hits and actually sold records and could act she was not a shady flop. IF anything thing Ciara and Cassie would be the spinoffs of Aaliyah. Please don’t say that flop is caring baby girls torch because is just disrespectful.

  161. RichnBlack11(Beyonce keep em MAD) April 11, 2012

  162. K/\Z April 11, 2012

I miss Baby Girl so much…That clip of her with Beyonce was cute!! At the time of her death LiLi was going places, No one can say for sure where her career would have taken her a few years down the line. When she died she was an American artist who wasn’t really known outside of the US. She was literally breaking into Europe, With more and more people becoming aware of her, the year of her death, With alot of publicity planned following the release of her 3rd album, Including live performances and concerts. Her death made Europe (particularly the UK) more aware of her music. I think that she would have continued to make music after her 3rd album, But she would have carried on with her acting career number 1 priority, There would have been room for both Aaliyah and Beyonce with some healthy competition along the way… But Aaliyah wasn’t just an artist.. She wanted more out of her career than just music! 🙂

  163. LH April 11, 2012

Ok lets just get it straight. Aaliyah and Beyonce wouldn’t have even been in the same category. They both can sing and dance but they both catered to two different audiences. I am a huge beyonce fan but I also really liked Aaliyah. Yes, Beyonce came from a group but that doesn’t mean that’s why shes at the top, shes at the top because of her work ethic and her ability to deliver a great show and make hits. Aaliyah was an innovator while she was here and had she still been here she would have probably achieved the status as Beyonce in the R&B world but beyonce has r&b and pop. And lets not get it twisted Timbaland said he didnt kno if she would be BIGGER than beyonce. So there u have it.

  164. riri April 11, 2012

    R.I.P Aaliyah

I dont know what Aaliyah would have been like today. If I be honest, Aaliyah became bigger AFTER her death. Janet Jackson did what Aaliyah was doing then. I dont know….

  165. Aaliyah is Queen B**** April 11, 2012

Yess!!!!!! @RATED-NEXT and QUEENOFTHENAVY. Ya’ll made some very true statements.

To the haters who said Aaliyah would be no where near Beyonce’s level, B**** HOW DO YOU KNOW?!!! Ya’ll are comparing Destiny’s Child (a group) to a single artist at the time (Aaliyah). Everyone knows that groups make more money especially at that time in the music industry than any single artist would unless you’re MJ. Beyonce’s solo success doesn’t even compare to the numbers she sold while in DC. And ya’ll compared Beyonce’s first albums to Aaliyah’s first albums still proves nothing! First they came out at two different decades. Plus like someone said earlier Beyonce was riding off of DC’s exposure when she came out as a solo artist, plus she was the lead singer of the group. The real question is if Beyonce came out as a solo artist w/o having been in a group in 96′ like Aaliyah, who would have sold more? Or if they both came out in the 2000’s again w/o being in a group who would have sold more?

Then the people who compare Beyonce’s vocals to Aaliyah’s vocals. People forget Beyonce’s family was rich before she got into music, she had musical training and had a vocal coach to teach her everything to classical opera. I heard beyonce’s voice as a little girl compared to christina aguilera’s and honey christina had no vocal training and could sing waaay better! So all that she had a natural big voice/ she could saaang since she was a little girl is complete bull! That chick had massive training and even with that she still wasn’t that great as a child until she developed her voice more! She did not have a natural god given talent! She paid for it! Plus people underestimate Aaliyah’s talent. She was more than just a pretty face she did have real authentic vocal chops!! See: Givin Up, Steady ground, Ave Maria! Had she gotten a vocal coach to train her to sing opera like rich kid beyonce’, I assure you she would have been able to. And as far as acting goes Aaliyah was a natural unlike Ms Knowlesa and ya’ll know it! Aaliyah would have gotten her oscar by now unlike Beyonce’ who has to pay directors and executive produce movies in order to get any shine. In the music industry you can buy success but in the movie industry you CANNOT! IF YOU CAN’T ACT YOU CAN’T ACT POINT BLANK PERIOD!

So in case ya’ll didn’t get it by now Aaliyah would be the bomb dot com if she was here today! And like someone else mentioned had beyonce died in 2001 would people care about her as much as they do Aaliyah? It would have been tragic but probably not! Aaliyah had fire and personality! People could relate to her. Oh and to the person who said Beyonce’ reminded them of Aaliyah in interviews… That’s a damn lie! Aaliyah was smooth in her interviews not grasping for words like a dumb duck. She would have been a great singer, performer, actress, and eventually mogul. And she would have been the better eye candy! Beyonce’ is pretty but most guys liked her for her b***! Aaliyah was drop dead gorgeous without having a donkey ass! Oh and another note there would be no Bey and Jay because Jay loved him some Aaliyah even though she was with Damon Dash!

And let me just say that you Beyonce’ wannabes NOT FANS BUT WANNABES are completely pathetic!! In fact any fan of an artist that lives vicariously through them is beyond pathetic! Why are ya’ll so concerned about what this woman (beyonce’) is doing? Or what this woman has achieved? What have ya’ll achieved? Beyonce’ said it herself ya’ll fans go hard for her but need to bring it down a couple hundred notches!! While ya’ll are screaming team Bey! She’s enjoying her life with ya’lls hard earned money and doesn’t give a damn about yall. So think about that when ya’ll go to sleep

    THAT IS ALL

  166. Toni La Nae April 11, 2012

Okay I love Timbaland but people need to stop comparing all it does it create talk for division. For example back in the 90’s people Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, just to name a few all had success. All of them had different styles and different talent. I loved Aalyiah and missed her dealrly she had a voice and a sweet spirit. If you loved her great just hold on to the memories. Besides there is always an artist or group that begins as unknown and they might dominate a whole deacade. I mean you never heard about Patti Labelle dissing Aretha. One thing about my generation that baffles me is we always want to comapre and divide people. And I saw the comment asking what Beyonce’ done for the music industry? First she was in a successful group say what you wanna say Destiny’s Child fanbase and record sales speaks for itself. Next she can actually sing and puts on good concerts. Aaliyah was not the first singer to crossover into acting many of women in music did it before her. I understand that was his friend but she did not set the standard for versatility in enterainment.

  167. MuzikPro April 12, 2012

for people to compare my favorite two artists who were close friends that also dated two men that were best friends at the time is so incredibly silly. Jay-Z ,Beyoncé’s now husband wrote a song about how much he loved Aaliyah as a friend, so why are people trying to make something out of nothing. If Aaliyah was alive and on tour, Beyoncé and Jay would be in the audience supporting and vice versa.

Timbo didn’t mean it in the way how people are taking it. it was a Metaphor. He loved Aaliyah so much that he chose his wife because she looked like Aaliyah. & He just stated he bought and sent gifts to Beyoncé’s child. So cmon folks.

& I love that Beyoncé actually stated it to her group of fans that do such nonsense as if to say, “Be Nice to Each Other and Calm Down Children, Mother Will Be Back Soon…” smfh lol

Why “fans” argue over comparing artists that are friends and support each other in real iife are BEYOND me…they don’t really care or agree with what you’re saying and at the end of the day they are just making money off of you. So stop being sheep. You can support, but let it make SENSE.

_Much Love to Aaliyah’s Memory! _& Much Love to Beyoncé’s future success! 2 beautiful and talented black women!

  168. Happy F3eet April 12, 2012

    I agree with @Aunt Jackie

Apparently, people have no idea how big Aaliyah was.. before her death she starred in two major motion picture Romeo Must Die and Anne Rice Queen of Damned… also was slated to Star in the Blockbuster Matrix series… She was well own her way mainstream… chances are she would have had endorsements deals galore because of her beauty and talents. She was a natural on the screen and musically . Beyonce is Beyonce and Aaliyah is Aaliyah. No one knows how big she would have been but I know that she would have been Huge. Just looking at how mainstream was taking a chance on a R&B singer with no acting skills. They ask Aaliyah not Beyonce that tells you something.

  169. richnblack11(beyonce keep em mad) April 12, 2012

that video with the two of them is just so cute, and look at Bey being silly.

you can tell they were ke ke

  170. D-n-da-ATL April 13, 2012

Appreciate people while they are alive.

While I love Aaliyah’s music , I have to disagree with the comment that ” Aaliyah would have been as big as Beyonce’. She most likely would be acting, but singing,I don’t know? Truthfully, Brandy was outselling all of these ladies during that era, along with having a hit show, and currently she is making a “comeback”.

It confuses me that people celebrate Aaliyah’s artistry, but the artist we do have around and living people “dog” and tear apart verbally on these blogs Everyday. I’m talking about Brandy, Monica, Ciara , Ashanti and even Beyonce, just to name a few.

As, Lauryn Hill stated after Whitney Houston’s passing ” Appreciate the artistry while these people are alive”.

  171. Noxie April 16, 2012

I think both women were great and unique different in so many ways and yet similar. There is no way to know where Aliyah would be in this day and age, so the best thing to do would be to enjoy what she left us and the person that she was. And stop hating…Beyonce this… Beyonce that come on now stop being so negative this woman is an icon, this woman is a living legend, she is a star. Let us stop this madness these women are great talents and have given music that will last a lifetime and moments we will never forget.

  172. James Alexander April 16, 2012

I won’t say that Aaliyah would’ve been bigger or as big as Beyonce but I do think she was well on her way to bigger things than Beyonce at the time of her passing. She had so much on her plate at that time from her Aaliyah album just coming out to signing on to do tons of movies. But just like the amount of licks it takes to get to the center of that tootsie pop, the world may never know. R.I.P. Babygirl

  173. Jacxon April 17, 2012

Some of you are living in a dream world. What do you mean Aaliyah wasn’t bigger than Brandy? Really!? REALLY?! Moesha wasn’t Friends, lets not act like Brandy was (or is for that matter) mainstream. Stop it.

Aaliyah for sure would be giving Beyonce a run for her money BIG TIME. We already know she could out act Beyonce because bey can’t act to save her life. I’m not all about how many big notes someone can hold, that’s not what determines an artist anyway. Aaliyah was growing with each album she came out with (something I can’t say the same for with Beyonce). Aaliyah for sure would be doing big things right now. People need a reality check and snap back into reality. Aaliyah didn’t even have the jacked up representation of Brandy, Monica and even Toni Braxton. All of which should be MUCH bigger than they are but they have jacked up representation. Aaliyah had stellar reps that helped her make right decisions.

  174. Anne April 17, 2012

I agree with those who said she would be like Brandy. They were what and what IMO. Both had some crossover success. It’s hard to acheive longevity, no reason to assume Aaliyah would have done so. The bottom line is we will never know what would or would not have been, way too speculative and obviously was not meant to be anyway.

  175. LeGeNdArY April 17, 2012

    beyonce is SUCHa FLOP!!!

  176. Jay April 28, 2012

Shut the hell up everybody knows aaliyah is better. Now let me give an example aaliyah rock the boat, try again, and are you that somebody. Now do you understand why aaliyah is better

  177. Haughton June 28, 2012

Timbaland could have, and should have, given his opinion on how big a star Aaliyah would have been had she lived without mentioning another celebrity. There’s no question in my mind that she would have been a huge crossover star. Romeo Must Die was a crossover hit movie. So was “The Matrix Reloaded”, even though her role had to be recast because she was gone before production, but after she landed the role. The point is She was landing those kind of roles because she was getting popular beyond “black america.” And who wouldn’t have noticed her? She wasa traffic stopping gorgeous DARKER SKINNED black girl. Girls of all races aspired to have her wispy hair style (most of it was her’s…very little weave), her slender physique was attractive to mainstreem audiences, and yeah, the girl could SING HER ASS OFF, with out over singing/riffing. She stuck to the melody and still maintained an R&B sound…had perfect clarity and pitch. She was that rare mix of authenticity with crossover appeal.

  178. oki! September 4, 2012

its really hard to say but the truth is everybody’s fame/career dies down including beyonce’s… the sad thing is aaliyah didnt get to finish her career and live the rest of her life and start a family or atleast grow old. sadly we have to be strong and keep her in our thoughts and be sooo sooooo thankful for the pictures and music videos and movies left behind of her. its but breaks my heart and pisses me off when i see that plane crumbled like that…. and i feel the anger left in the air (damn) we all love aaliyah and miss her dearly!! she cant be replaced or compared but she will be copied only because their a fan too. so much talent and beauty

  179. Sky December 23, 2012

Aaliyah wasn’t a huge super star. I’m not hating because I was a huge Aaliayh fan from 94 until her passing in 2001. If she had lived, yes I do think she would have been great at the cross over affect into film.

Facts – Aaliayh was the face of Tommy Girl Jeans; Nom. for Golden Globe & Oscar for Journey to the Past.

But musically she was still on the R&B level. Brandy & even Monica had already crossed over to pop with there 2nd albums.

So if Aaliyah lived she would mostly be on there level doing music and film. A mother with children.

But that’s not a question we can answer b/c God had a bigger plan for her. So where ever she is she’s doing something more amazing than simple what the world knew her for.

If Aaliyah never died, Beyonce would not be who she is today, and the music game would be entirely differently. lets not forget Damon Dash was CEO & owner of Jay-Z and the roca-fella brand. Jay-Z broke his hold from Damon Dash in 2002. a year after Aaliyah died. Beyonce was not even known as a beyonce back then, she was the blonde head chick from destiny’s child. Aaliyah’s death opened the door for Beyonce to take the seat of power that Aaliyah was already in. Regardless if she reached icon status Aaliyah was in that seat. Lets not forget before her death Aaliyah was set to appear in matrix sequels, and reading tons of scripts for more blockbuster hits. Beyonce still struggles as a actor and can never be a natural easy going actor Aaliyah was. The comparison between the two is just idiotic. Lets face it Aaliyah legacy is still more legenedary than Beyonce’s. People like Ashanti, Ciara, and Rihanna prolly would have never been given a record deal if Aaliyah was still here.
She was only 22, and was 8 yrs strong in the industry. The fact remains that she was taken away from us, by a careless decision she made, when she decided to ignore the pilot’s warning, and took a chance that took her life.
Right after Aaliyah demise. Beyonce struck out, and changed the game forever. It’s just a huge void, that music suffers still to this day, and it never amazes me how even after all this time. Aaliyah is still more relevant than ever.

I agree 100%. Aaliyah started to crossover during her One In A Million era. When she came out with “Try Again” and all those other songs from her last album. She was like boiling water she was about to blow up MAJOR! Then she dies, making it effortless for Beyonce to rise to the top. Of course Beyonce’s voice now sounds better than Aaliyah’s voice then. She was only 22 years old when she died. Had she lived, her voice would’ve matured the same way Beyonce’s did. Listen to Beyonce, Monica, Brandy, etc. back THEN and tell me they don’t sound better to listen to NOW! Plus this whole comparison between Aaliyah, Monica and Brandy. Monica and Brandy weren’t even on Aaliyah’s caliber then. Aaliyah had her own still of singing. She sang that way purposely to portray a certain image, “street but sweet”. She didn’t need to show all of her skin to be relevant. She didn’t have to shake her behind and whip her hair. She was classy. She executed each dance move she ever did with little to know effort. Plus she didn’t have to try as hard as Beyonce to be relevant. If Beyonce was as good as everyone makes her out to be, she could drop an album and wait 5-6 years and come back with no problem. Just saying. Don’t underestimate the legendary Aaliyah. She paved the way for a lot of the female artists today.

Its fair to say that Aahliyah’s music career was evolving. At the time what she was contributing was groundbreaking and fresh within the RNB paradigm.I believe if she toke of that formula of singing more generic rnb/pop songs like no scrubs, all for, independent woman, u remind of a girl etc. You know those more catchy mainstream tunes her album would’ve performed better on a global stance. I commend her last effort for being excremental and fresh. Her carrer as actress was going to explode no doubt about . She had the image and style in the bag and i can see her becoming a brand in business. The main ingredient for Aahliyah going forward was to blend her rnb/hip hop sounds with pop . I think she would’ve managed to successfully transition like usher into pop territories. Given her multi talented abilty i think she woudve been on par with Rihanna and Beyonce . I think Beyonce awesome and amazing i just think thou successful her style and flow remains stagnant. Props to Rihanna for always coming different. At the end of the day they are all amazing black queens
