Its ability to compete MATTERS, which is why you won’t see a Battleship 2, but you’ll see an Avengers 2. Its release strategy, like G.I. Joe before it, gives you a clue as to how the film is really doing. Studios know how to inflate numbers by particular release strategies, and one must pay attention, close attention to figure out the worth of a film.
Again, you will NOT see a Battleship 2. If it was a hit, there would most certainly be one.

I’m not a Rihanna ‘hater’. The movie is doing “okay”. Simple as that. It’s getting creamed by Avengers, and will get lost within the shuffle of summer blockbusters, with Men in Black III coming out. Well, I think it’s good she got casted in the film, but you do have to remember that this isn’t a very well-respected movie. They also casted Brooklyn Decker, a model. It’s just spectacle casting, not serious consideration, which reflects the nature of the movie.
You also have to remember that facebook fans and twitter followers aren’t necessarily fans, they’re just “onlookers” a lot of the time. Sometimes twitter followers and facebook “fans” don’t even like the people they engage with, which means they don’t buy albums, or go see films they’re in. They just tune in for a laugh.

Battleship sucks big time!! With out without Rihanna it would have still been boring. I can’t believe I sat and watched the entire thing waiting for some excitement. Transformers it is not. “Battleship” has a FINAL, “get-to-theater” cost of (at least) $400-Million (most say $450)!

3.) So what’s the actual “promotional budget” that-that $50-Million was added to?! Well, let’s look at a movie that cost AS MUCH to produce and was seen in at least as many places as “Battleship”: “John Carter”. ‘John Carter’ was/is similar to ‘B’ship’ in many ways. Not only is it too a “tent-pole” movie, as ‘B’ship’ is, but it was seen in AS MANY places, and was given, a now verified, promotional budget of (at least) $100-Million. ..You see, you the rational is that you have a big-budget film, and you advertise it with big-budget to match. So if a film say costs $200-Million to produce, it’ll THEN have a promotion budget of (dollar-for-dollar) equal to the production budget= $200-Million for production costs, $200-Million for P/A (prints and advertising)!
So, let’s see, so far we’ve got $250-M + $100-M + $50-M = $400-Million. But that’s NOT the what ‘B’ship’ has to return. NO! In order for a film to make money, ALL the overhead has to be taken into consideration, so the accountants and statisticians all then come up with a “metric”: 1.4X “known costs” = on-the-bubble fail/pass. And 1.75X”known costs” = passing-with-flying colors success!
That said, in order for “Battleship” to NOT lose, it has to return 1.4 X $400-M (low-ball number) = $560-Million. <—THAT'S OVER 1/2 BILLION DOLLARS NOT TO FAIL GIVEN THAT HUUUUUGE COST TO FINALLY GET IT TO THE THEATERS!
"Battleship" was off to a head-above-water (not outstanding) WW start: $115-Million. But look at the -60% decrease during its 3rd week's WW run. What happened? "The Avengers" happened, that's what! Matter of a fact, since "Avengers" began its overseas run, it's literally cut "Battleship" overseas box office IN HALF! Long-story short: The film's producers knew EXACTLY what they were doing when they let Rihanna do this movie. They found their perfect "useful idiot": an easily recognizable world wide name/face. Someone who was willing to do the film no matter the consequences for her brand. Someone who could carry the blame, should the film fail, but who could be ushered-out the way should the film succeed. Rihanna, in her haste to outdo Chris Brown checked ALL the above boxes.. Rihanna WILL be 'the face' of a $450-million disaster-at-sea..!!
