Hot Topic: Is Beyonce’s ’4′ A Classic?

Beyonce 4 Hot Topic: Is Beyonces 4 A Classic?

With over 2 million copies sold worldwide since its 2011 release, it’s safe to say Beyonce‘s ’4′ struck a positive chord with the general public and her ever loyal ‘Beyhive‘.

A cool fusion of Alternative R&B and foot stomping power anthems, the project- by way of sound- might be described as the lovechild of 2003′s ‘Dangerously In Love’ and 2008′s ‘I Am Sasha Fierce‘.

However, perhaps in response to the star’s well publicized 2012 Grammy snub, the topic of ‘4‘s critical appeal still burns bright, with critics and fans torn between how influential the project is, how will it be remembered in ten to fifteen years time?

So now we throw the question to you.

Do you think ’4′ is a classic?

Weigh in below…

OH and note; that is rhetorical question, because until Kat Dalunesta nabs a Grammy, have an arena’s worth of seats!

      • It was only a “classic” to some of the gays. The album was simply mediocre r&b and that is the consensus from consumers on Amazon. No real hits, no real classics. Actually all of her solo albums have been mediocre but they at least had a couple good singles on each one. This album was the same but lacked a hit song. Interesting how this topic does not have a poll but no need since the consensus is already on Amazon.

Im not into stans and fans and shade and all that pop culture non sense. Im a musician and Im into real music. Some One Please explain to me why and how is it that artist like Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Chris Brown etc make generic pop/dance commercial music Beyonce makes authentic music and people say it’s just okay.

yes MJ’s last album was not as big as his others. I think every good artist has at least one flop album. It will not effect beyonce tho. Her fanbase is too big and she’s too talented and commercially intact to care.

Yea but MJ was going on his 30th year in the industry. Beyonce is still young, and is getting treated as a legend. I think that is making her old to me. SHe needs to still wrok and put out songs the way she did during 2006. It seems as if she is this big legend but her solo career only started in 2003. When Michael Jackson was 30 “Bad” sold 30-32 million copies and had 5 number 1 hits. Beyonce is too young and popping to be having flops

IT’S A GOOD ALBUM, BUT NOT A CLASSIC.

BUT I FEEL LIKE PERSONALLY FOR BEYONCE HERSELF IT’S A CLASSIC BECAUSE IT’S WHERE SHE WAS AT IN HER LIFE. BUT I WILL SAY THIS AND DIL ARE MY LEAST FAVORITE ALBUMS FROM HER, BUT I DO FEEL DIL WAS AND WILL ALWAYS BE A CLASSIC ALBUM (WHETHER I LOVE IT OR NOT)

I DO HOPE HER NEXT ALBUM IS A LOVE CHILD OF B’DAY AND I AM… SASHA FIERCE!

I HOPE SHE GOES BACK TO MORE POP R&B TRACKS….

I HOPE MORE UPTEMOS ARE LIKE “GET ME BODIED” “UPGRADE U” “SWEET DREAMS” “SINGLE LADIES” “END OF TIME” AND THE MID TEMPOS ARE MORE “IRREPLACEABLE” “THAT’S HOW YOU LIKE IT” AND THE BALLADS ARE “I AM…” DRIVEN ALL THE WAY!

      • 4 had some amazing songs, the problem is that music has shifted so much since the release of “I AM Sasha Fierce”. The euro/ pop trend has taken over and only Adele has managed to avoid jumping on that bandwagon.

I feel that B also made a huge mistake by getting rid of her dad as her manager, this album had the power to “Snatch Wigs” but the lead single was a mess and the whole promo of the project was all over the place. Beyonce is GREAT at what she does, but she is no Jay Z. I think that she needs to share some of the power and focus on what she’s best at singing and being a kick ass performer.

      • That is where i disagree with you. She is now in her 30s, a wife, and is now a mother. I feel like she should make music to reflect this. She has blue ivy to set an example for. I feel like she should begin making grown and sexy music with a few up tempos here and there. She shouldn’t be making music where she will be on stage gyrating in a leotard that leaves nothing to the imagination. I so desperately want for Beyonce to go back to the wholesome talent she was when she didnt have to sell sex to sell an album. I feel like Beyonce has lost a lot of respect in the industry and in the world of record sales due to her latest shenanigans in the media. She needs to come back more sophisticated and lady like.

A classic is when an album have HITS and sales record and goes down in history as a great album…I.E. Adele’s “21″ will be a classic because each song released was pretty much a hit.

But a classic can be defined as Rihanna’s “GGGB” she has the hits and sales off of that album for such!

I am…sasha fierce is as iconic as any MJ album. For an album to be a classic it has to have commercial success, tons of good reviews, and sales off the wall. Beyonce is always snatching wigs. Even tho I don’t stan for her like that, I give credit where it’s due and this woman puts her everything into her work. It WILL be remembered. But 4 definitely not. It has nice songs but it wasn’t good like her other albums.

That depends on what you consider a classic. I actually liked 4 more than her previous albums. The content was good IMO (see: I miss you, I care, schoolin life, countdown, start over, and end of time). I believe her mistake was putting out the wrong singles that her audience (teens-early 20′s) couldn’t relate to. The album didn’t do well because she was trying to experiment with almost an entirely different sound and style too fast.

Bitch is a FLOP and so over. This Beyonce bitch is a boring ass flop who even her hubby has no confidence in. I mean Jay-Z told Rita Flopa that he wants her to be as successful as Rihanna and not Beyonce, that should tell you something if even your hubby thinks you’re so over.

She stood out in Destiny’s Child because the other two were as dull as dishwater, now that she is solo, she has to compete against the others in the game and people are just getting bored of her. Time to retire, “4closure” was a disaster.

It’s too early to be considered a classic. But 4 is Beyonce’s best album. The sounds are unlike anything I hear on the radio (End of Time, Love on Top, I Miss You) 4 is so underrated. Beyonce’s most classic album in my opinion is I Am… Sasha Fierce, that era was amazing & it slayed in every aspect (sales & Grammys) it even started a dance phenomenon (Single Ladies). Not to mention songs like Halo & If I Were A Boy are still memorable & will never get old.

YES “4″ is the epitome of a CLASSIC !! obviously you idiots don`t understand the true definition . this album can be played straight through 100 times and still be my favorite of hers to date . A classic is an album that stands the test of time…do you listen to Soulja Boys albums today ? NO but he did have hits so my point is : an album is a classic when it is praised for the material and commercial success is apart of it of course . Being that she is one of the few still obtaining platinum status and had a top 20 and R&B #1 from the album , this by definition makes this record an all around masterpiece .

    -have several seats,
    and i thank you :)

    • As much as I like 4 I really don’t know if it will stand the test of time, and time is exactly what this album needs before we can start asking if its a classic, it only came out last year. To me a classic doesn’t necessarily mean your best piece of work, I would call 4 Beyonce’s most solid effort to date but I regard DIL more of a classic than 4. Plus I just don’t think 4 has had the warranted enough commercial success for it to be considered a classic either, not saying that, that is all that is required in order for an album to be a classic but I do feel that it is an aspect of it.

The album was filled with mid-tempos and ballads…so? Beyonce was doing a bunch of runs…so? The meaning of a “classic” album is an album that is considered an artists best or most distinctive piece of work that exemplify a stage in the history of music. Now please tell me with FACTS, not your opinion or using those measly two #1 singles, how “4″ is a classic album???
      Examples of TRUE classic albums:
      Michael Jackson – Thriller
      Whitney Houston – The Bodyguard
      Prince – Purple Rain
      PS: Truth doesn’t equal hating.

    • What does them being in the game longer have to do with me listing their albums as classics? When those albums came out they were in the game as long as Beyonce is today. Their sales, critical reviews, and innovative material made those albums classics. If you NEED someone in modern day since you pulling shit out your ass, Adele has been in the game LESS than Beyonce with an album that can truly fall in the classic category. And I’m not a stan for Adele nor do I have her album so don’t play that bullshit. And second, why don’t you reiterate your “facts” so we’re clear??

Songs like 1+1, I care, Start Over, Schoolin’ Life, & I was here will always have a special place in my heart. I thank Bey for putting forth such an amazing work while surrounded with many mainstream artists today who don’t really share the same drive that she encompasses. Some people point out that the all of the album’s songs don’t really make for a cohesive piece. I think it depends on your outlook towards it. As an album, there was not much there conceptually that I could see, aside from great music. She didn’t really try to implicate any gimmicks with this album, just her talent and creative drive. As an artist, she continually shows growth and consistently gets better as time progresses. It’s actually quite scary when I think of how amazing she will do with the rest of the opportunities she has set for 2012.

  • This album is a classic! No if’s and’s or but’s about it! The ’4′ album finds it’s way into these different post almost as much as Bey does. It’s compared to any pop or R&B album that gets released. Do you know why? … It’s because it made a lasting impression. As much as people try to downplay the success of that album it just doesn’t stick.

After barely receiving mainstream airplay, all the nit-picing with her videos controversies, the near month long album leak and the haters giving her singles low rating on itunes – Beyonce still came in at #1, stayed there for 2 weeks, lived in the top 10 for almost a dozen weeks, produced 2 #1 R&B hits(as well as a Dance #1) and went platinum plus. Sorry, but it’s not a flop by anyone means.

Bey’s peers are at the peak of their careers and they’re also inside the same 1-2 million bracket Honey B (whose been in this game for 15 years now) is in. *Hand claps*

It’s nothing to prove! It’s all about continuing to build your legacy. None of what Bey achieved was an easy feat. This was a pregnant woman were talking about , STILL out performing your favs.

…but let’s talk about sales, since it’s so damn important: Rihanna’s TTT been out for 7 month’s and it’s still not platinum, Nicki Minaj is barely obtaining Gold (almost 3 months into her era), Madonna MDNA doesn’t have success in it (it’s no longer on the charts), Usher ‘slooking For 4 M…iracles(he’s not on track to go platinum at this point). The list goes on (add these names: Kelly Rowland, Monica, etc ). I’m not being harsh, I have nothing against some of the artists I named. It’s just always people throwing bricks from their glass houses everyday living just to bash Beyonce.

Bottom Line: ’4′ is a great album, it’s going to be talked about for a long time to come and I do believe it’s one of those albums that will get the respect it truly deserves 5-10 years from now.

    • Yes and let’s talk about how she went against the grain and didn’t make an electro-pop dance album. Beyonce already knows how to get people to dance she made he dance album with B’day with them rough hard club beats, and with I Am.. Sasha Fierce. For an R&B album to go platinum, and achieve top 20 hits on the POP CHARTS, body does that these days! She really changed it up and I love and appreciate 4,. Queen B STING!! “PLATINUM” considered a flop for Beyonce, but a HUGE success for other artists.hrmm check yourself.. B still moving units and watch her hold it down on the next album..

In my opinion 4 was Beyoncè’s best and most mature work as a whole. With better promotion and single choices this album had the potential to sale atleast 7M WW. But it didn’t sell great and nor did the singles. This doesn’t take away from this album being great tho. It’s easy to listen to and IMO it has a few songs that are classic I.E.(End of Time & Schoolin Life). But this album is not a classic on the sales front.

Yes to me, It’s a classic. I still played it straight thru today. Tbh Bey’s artistry is underrated, it’s something i’ve discussed with music enthusiast friends of mine who arent even into mainstream music. The thing the woman does with her voice …. The next artist simply cant. I hope when she’s in her 40s, she’ll start flaunting her skills to the fullest. Her sexy image can be placed on back burner then. She is yet to utilise her full potential as is

What is classic and what isn’t depends on how you look at it. Major hits, record achievements, major album sales, and critical acclaim can make an album classic, but an album can still be considered a classic without all of that. Like someone already said, Blueprint 1 is a hip-hop classic without hits or sales. Britney’s Blackout is a pop classic even though its her most under performing album (with the exception of Femme Fatale). IMO, 4 is an R&B classic album. It was a unique work of art with a sound similar to no other release that time frame. 4 is something that can be listened to time and time again (your a liar if you say I Was Here didn’t slay your life). 4 is a flop by Beyonce’s standards and for any major release, but for an R&B album it did good. Name one R&B album that sold better that year?

This feels like a post created solely for the purpose of inciting drama. Anywho, I don’t consider this album a classic. I personally didn’t care for it, but that’s just me. However, it did garner great critical response and it seemed to go over well with most of the Beyonce fans-some didn’t like it though. I think ultimately it may find it’s place in the category of “underrated” or “fan-favorite” in the Beyonce catalog like Whitney’s “I’m Your baby Tonight” or Mariah’s “Emotions” or Madonna’s “Erotica”

    Ok, I have to say…

“4″ was not a flop in terms of artistic achievement but it didn’t fare very well commercially. I would not say it was a classic and that comes down to it’s execution and production. Many of the songs just don’t stand out enough with production that sounds unfinished and unimaginative. Beyonce said she wanted to visit some of the by-gone era’s of music. The major problem here was that she failed to add anything to genres and styles that had been done very well before. Consider “Party” and “Love on Top”, enjoyable songs? Yes. Amazing productions? No! I couldn’t understand why there were no futuristic or unique embellishments to these songs. These styles have been done before so if your going to remake it bring it to today’s standards. An example of what I’m talking about is Herby Hancock’s “Rock It” and Michael Jackson’s “Bad” singles (the extended dance mix of the latter) You can clearly hear how MJ used a similar type of electronic sequencing/white noise and polished so that even today it sounds revolutionary. “4″‘s music just sounds unispired with the exception of “End of Time”, but that song is not without it’s faults either.

“End of Time” is ruined by DULL percussion. You can imagine how it would have sounded had Quincy Jones or Narada Michael Walden produced it with crisp clear snare drums and, cymbals and high-hats etc. Good examples of their SHINY sounds are found in “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”, “Workin’ Day and Night” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” “License To Kill”. All of these songs have horn sections yet manage to balance out the texture of the sounds so it doesn’t feel so heavy. Wasn’t this mentioned around the executive decision table!!!

“Countdown” is ANOTHER misstep. When do Dancehall music inspired songs NOT have a bassline??? Coming from the Caribbean we know that any time you drop a Dancehall beat you HAVE TO HAVE a good bass guitar or even keyboard to go with it or it sounds empty. What do you dance to if not the bass? That song could have destroyed Notting Hill Carnival if it was done correctly…but nope!

“Best Thing I Never Had” was very oversung. Beyonce went back to here DIL era and riffed and ran all over the place to the point where the message wasn’t even believable. The song was quite good but felt a bit out of place. It wasn’t even obvious it was Babyface which is unusual, his sound is normally VERY distinct and his songwriting.

“I Care” is AMAZING and demonstrates why Beyonce is one of the best singers in Pop music., This woman KNOWS how to drive her voice with great steering. I have to say though that this Babyface/Diane Warren/David Foster was again let down by dull percussion which makes it ound noisy. Compare Whitney’s “I Have Nothing” once again you hear sharp, crisp clear percussion which balances with the timpani sounding booms and loud sounds created by the percussive instruments. Jeff Bhasker, who is a great musician/writer, shouldn’t criticize Rico Love and Kelly Rowland when he needs to listen to Babyface, Narada, Darkchild and Quincy Jones because his work is almost like their’s, it’s just not as refined.

“1 + 1″ was good but I’m not sure if that was the best song to OPEN the album with. “I Miss You” was empty and started just as it begun, it drifted off into space with no impact except it sounding nice. I’m sure music should do more than that.
“Rather Die Young” was really good, especially because it sounded similar to E, W & F’s “After the Love is Gone” however, at the end it didn’t progress, the instruments didn’t “jam” like a song of that era should. Compare the triumphant ending of Earth, Wind and Fire’s songs such as the aforementioned and “Fantasy”. Even their fast songs like “Let’s Groove” and “September” end on a climax.

Lastly, Beyonce like Christina Aguilera REALLY NEEDS to invest in using backing singers for their projects. Despite their big ranges and impressive skills there’s only so much one person’s voice can do. Even Whitney and Mariah had male and female backing singers who had different ranges, tones, textures and brought a unique sound to the music. (CIssy Houston is on “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and Trey Lorenz isn’t going ANYWHERE!!!) Chaka Khan even used a young Whitney on the original “I’m Every Woman”. It seems that with church choir singers you’re made to sing with other people/alternate parts and appreciate their unique voices but with child singers they can be so used to always singing alone or being told by people that they’re great they really think they can “Do it all!!!” This is what separates the Whitney’s, Mariah’s and Chaka’s from the Beyonce’s and Christina’s. Even Lady Gaga’s 1st album got tiring just because she was the only voice singing on it…it was too much after a while.

I would have liked to throw in the Beyonce songwriting issue as classics really come from originality …and honesty but I see such topics don’t get covered on TGJ anymore!!! Writing a song is not the same as buying one…congrats Amy Winehouse, Adele, Duffy and the older greats MJ, Mariah, Stevi, Donna Summer, Lionel Richie!!!

  • if the woman released the right singles at the right time this album would have done so much time and been a classic

She hardly used her pregnancy to her advantage apart from the Love On Top MTV stint. not releasing it as a single with a video after that was the 2nd biggest mistake of this whole era.

The Biggest Mistake is not releasing End of Time instead of Run The World as the Lead Single.

if she did those two things right she’d have two #1s off this album and it would have sold much more than 2.7 Million,

the 1st week sales would have been off the chart and she’d be at something like 7 maybe 8 Million WW by now like with her other Albums.

End Of Time and Love On Top had the potential to be her biggest hits but her Marketing team are idiots.

Forgot to mention that the cover art was TERRIBLY BORING!!!!! Beyonce was in Paris when she shot that, why didn’t she show it!?! She could have taken that pic in her bathroom! Not to mention the bear costume she’s wearing! The deluxe pic is MUCH better!!

As for awards, she did win an American Music Award, Soul Train, MTV Video, Billboard and BET are sure to give her the whole station at this point so it’s not over yet!!!

Not to mention she’ll def enter “Live at Roseland” for the Long Form Video Grammy, (and probably “I Care” & “Love on Top” for Vocal Performance too) which will be a way of her winning an award for her whole album which she performed live or “live” (not sure) sans “Start Over.

For an album to be a CLASSIC It has to have commercial success, a lot of successful singles on billboard 100, not just a few, and it has to be remembered years from now.

Will we care about run the world, I care, I was here, and the other ones years from now? NO. It was only good in the moment cuz we love Beyonce and we are watching her every move. But at least I can say the album is a lot more classic than TTT and any of riri’s albums. *shade* (no offense. I did love rihanna’s album LOUD tho but not as a classic)

I think the album itself wasn’t about #1 singles, or the most airplay, I think it was just about making a statement and good music. I have to admit, 4 caught me off guard but yes it was a great album. She’s already proved she can have hits, she’s already proved she can move units, EVEN WITH a lead single that people are iffy about. (ie B’Day, which i think is her best body of work to date!) The question is, can this body of work be appreciated for what it is, and not what it sold or singles it produced? I’d rather have a great album that makes me feel good about the money I spent, instead of buying a album just because the first single “slayed” the charts. Smh, it just comes down to, people not knowing real music anymore. I’d say the album is classic beyonce.

I really think that “4″ is a classic album. The album is full of hits, melodies, harmonies, and creativity. This album is one of the most cohesive albums since “Dangerously in Love”. I love the album and I love Bey. No other artist can do it like her. You can all say what you want about her but at the end of the day you have to RESPECT her for perfecting her craft. Count the number of artist that can sing live, and dance their butt off during each performance w/o it sounding like crap…very few. Bey is the best performer of our GENERATION. • To me “4″ si not a classis…
There are millions of albums that have been made that mean millions of different things to millions of different people. But there are a few of these that can be said are timeless creations, works of art that define a movement, time or place in popular culture. But what defines these albums? When it comes down to figuring this out i believe the qualities needed to create can be split into four categories; Lyrical quality, musicianship, social context and how innovative a piece of music is at the time of release.

So again to me I will consider albums such as

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill = CLASSIC
Back To Black (Amy Winehouse) = CLASSIC
    Illmatic (Nas) = CLASSIC
    21 (Adale) = CLASSIC
Come On Over (Shania Twain) = CLASSIC
Blackout (Britney Spears) = CLASSIC (We all know Britney is not the strongest vocalist when compared to Christina Aguilera or Mariah Carey, but strong vocals is not what “Blackout” is about. “Blackout” is fresh, modern, and edgy and Every track on this album is hypnotically produced to create a sound that listeners and critics would expect to hear in 2020)

The only album I LOVE from Beyonce is “B’DAY”…. I love how that album was influenced by a variety of American genres. but it still not a CLASSIC.

Classic,’ is when you hear a record that gives you a moment that you can remember where they were when you first heard it or heard your favorite song I think Beyonce did that with this album for me so its a classic in my book.

First Of all : what genre is “Run the World” ?

this is important when you are a Beyonce FAN.

-Second : The lyrics Were NOT all that. Or maybe it was too conscious for a Dance song !! And Folks don’t wanna hear about a woman Empowering other women , they want ” Cake cake cake” , ” Like a girl gone wild’ , you know , those songs that will make you dance but won’t make u think too much about the lyrics.

      they are like :
      {
bitch say what , ” my persuasion can build a nation” ??!! are u fuckin’ serious ???

      BITCH PLEASE , i’m here to party , don’t ruin it for me. NOW mr. DJ , give me a damn Real dance song }

-Third : The Lyrics + the Beat weren’t Parallel with each other , You have a Very Danceable beat which require minimum Lyrics/talking and you have Too much Lyrics Over/throughout the track , which will sound TOO much for the average Listener , hence liking “Pon de floor” More despite being the same song “sound-wise” !!
-Forth : BEYONCE STANS expectations were higher and Bigger than “Run the world” , they wanted that single form her that will stay in #1 for like a Year or so as a sign of victory or something i don’t know about .. . And when they heard “RTW” the leak , it helped a LOT to make things worse , their Expectations went higher to the point they Won’t let her do what they don’t want Her to do , when they Heard the full version ” when released to iTunes” , they gave Up and trashed the song more than her actual haters who laughably loved it.
to sum it up : they wanted a “SAFE” , “TYPICAL-beyonce ” and a “HIT” single form her but she gave them a Pretty much “experimental” one , and since that was not wanted at this Time around , they Left it to rot in the bottom of charts. they wanted a single that will achieve that ” ROUND IV” frenzy they dreamed of , but “RTW’ was not it , so ….

but “RTW’ what make me respect beyonce as an artist who wanted to Widen her horizons as an artist without giving a damn about superficial things like #1′s and sales and shit ! #TRUE artist !

      WELL DONE BEYONCE.

here is the whole thing !! And BTW , that came up from a BIG beyonce fan who is a friend of mine and i pretty much agree with it !!

      THE END

    • RTW is a great song (I think people bash it because it was a lead single). It was too much innovation for some folks. I’m glad Bey brought that single to life with her performances and the amazing visual. The song doesn’t have to fit in a genre or follow the typical structure of every song we hear on the radio. The enitre ’4′ era was raw and risky. It’s actually one of my favorite era’s from her. I not only fell in love with Bey all over again, as an artist – I ended up having a new found respect for the woman.

  • I would say yes, its a classic. Due to Beyonce status as an artist she knew she could afford to make a less commercial album but in the grand scheme of things in will not be viewed in a negative light in the long run. Years or decades from now some of those songs will be included in a ‘Best Of’ type of collection and purchasers will consider them classics. I have such collections by artists like Prince, Patti Labelle, Marvin Gaye or Gladys Knight and although some of the included songs may not have charted high or garnered a Grammy nomination, the body of work of these type of artists, including albums and compilations, is viewed as classic as a whole. Beyonce will be the same.

it is a GREAT ALBUM , and it is early to call it a CLASSIC. maybe one of the best albums that was released in 2011 will be reasonable and understandable , but CLASSIC is too much glorifying and Over-rating for “4″ i guess … , but it is already the most played album in my Last.fm library , so , GOOD JOB Beyonce !! “4″ is a great album and i love it more and more with every play.

    PARTY , LOVE ON TOP , I MISS YOU , 1+1 , i was here >>>>

the album is DOPE DOPE DOPE

BUT the word “Classic” differs from person to Person , but STILL i can see “4″ handle the test of time !! and Classic albums should be “Known” for everyone ( e.g : Thriller , like a prayer , JANET , etc ….. ” , “4″ is TOO young to be called a Classic , the same goes to “21″ !! we still don’t know what the future hold when it comes to artistry. It Get Worse at times , but also we got People like “LANA del rey” who really make a balance in people’s personal tastes , Not the Garbage artists/Teen Pop acts we are having now.

OVERALL , another DUMB POST to get hits by @sam ….

your Blog performance is just like “Talk that talk” and “You Da One” chart performances , NO …. even worse !

  • As a whole album it falls out of the Classic Category to a wide commercial audience because of it rushed promo. But she has songs on the album that will stick out as classics to her fan base and still be appropriate and exciting to hear her perform 15 years from now. such as 1+1, Love on top, and Party, and end of time if she still wants to dance at 45. I really believe this album gave her some timeless material. As she gets older certain songs and types of choreography will leave her set list but she has a boat load of materiel that she can turn too.

  • For those that stay pressed to say “Beyonce’s latest album was un4tunate”…I say, “off with your heads!”

    Well, your ears rather!

Beyonce’s “4″ is a just a small window frame of the epic, grandeur, and simple greatness that is Bey! Every track resonates with the liste…you know what, I”m not even going to finish this, just so some random fan- of some other random artist (who will be forgotten about, unless they churn out more crap every six months)- can comment something of absolutely no worth.

    Simply put…”4″ isn’t a classic, it’s iconic.

Thriller did not have any trash songs. All the lyrics made sense. That album was original. I can’t say any of these things about 4. Why did it get snubbed at the Grammys? The best R&B album but no noms for best R&B album. Goodnight!

CLASSIC albums are the likes of The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill, CrazySexyCool, Brown Sugar, Stripped, Confessions, The Chronic…NOT ’4′ – a sub-par pop album released not even a year ago, that underperformed both comercially and critically and failed to bring anything new to the music scene. No hate. Only truth. I own the album and I like Beyonce as a performer, but the notion of considering this album a classic is beyond ridiculous. Real talk.

  • A classic? No. But it is one of the Beyoncé albums that will be remembered in Summer 2011. When you think of “Dangerously In Love” and “I Am..Sasha Fierce” you think of classics. But “4″ is Beyoncé’s biggest yet. What do you do when you have 16 Grammys and you are a multi-platinum selling artist? “4″ gives Beyoncé a crown. She still has the throne. Now a rising Legend. “4″ gives me a mature, more responsible woman. Beyoncé said they are songs that she can sing when she’s 40 or 60…

Of course not! It was pure SHITE !! Did you not see all of the singles from 4closure FLOP? No one was interested! A classic is one that will be remembered years & years from now

How do you suspect that 4orgotten will be remembered yrs from now if no one was interested in the music that was released from it? :/

& the album was only “critically acclaimed” because FLOPonce did something other than making ass shaking anthems for once..the response to that was flop after flop single HOWEVER I give her credit for trying :)

I dont really know if Beyonce has deliever a CLASSIC album yet. Her first solo one was the closest to it but i think out of that era “Crazy in love” the single!! its a classic, not the album.

When u think about a CLASSIC album its an album that goes beyond hits on billboard, an album that leaves a mark in pop culture, thats a CLASSIC album.

    Examples

    Prince: Purple Rain
    Madonna:Like a Prayer
Mariah Carey: The Emancipation of Mimi
    Adele:21

This four albums are example of albums that people will NEVER forget, people (the random listener” even know the name of the albums cause they are CLASSICS

Adele 21 its already a Classic and it is still on the charts its not just an album selling well with hits on hit (Rihannas:Loud) , it makes an impact, marks an era!!

u all are speaking from a stan’s perspective. I’m speaking from a practical perspective. In my opinion it is not a classic. The urban and bey stans may think so but it hasn’t clicked with the general audience like DIL and I am…sasha fierce. Just my opinion. Classic in terms of good music YES. But I still think the songs are bland and could have been better. It’s not like it’s all that. Most of the songs on the album besides love on top, RTW, EOT are kinda boring. Jus sayin.

All these Beyonce juvenile stans don’t understand the music business or the true definition of a “classic album.” 4 doesn’t fall in the true meaning of a classic by a long shot. It is NOT her most distinctive piece of work and has NOT exemplify a stage in the history of music at all. Throwing out slow songs and doing a bunch of runs on them doesn’t mean sh*t. This is NOT an album people use to describe Beyonce’s music to someone who’s not familiar with her work. Sorry, that’s FACT and opinions don’t ever over rule facts in the court of law lol! #FactOverOpinion.

  • To be honest I do look at it as a R&B classic. It’s easily one of the best contemporary R&B album of the last 5 years. To me, a classic isn’t defined as an album full of hit singles and multi-platinum sales. A classic album is about the material and the artistic growth that the artist shows.

    • Phyllis Hyman didn’t have “hit” singles that were chart toppers nor did her album go multi platinum. But what makes her album “Living All Alone” a TRUE classics (by definition not opinion) is that it exemplified a stage of history. It was distinctive and her most well known piece of work. When you describe Beyonce’s music to someone who doesn’t follow her career, do you use any material from “4?” Absolutely not. Again #FactOverOpinion

For me, they were the classic on that album.

I did like “run the world” however I think it flopped because it really isolated the male buying public out of the equation.

In all truth, that very single’s theme probably killed a lot of buzz off the album for a number of men.

  • I wouldn’t call “4″ a classic but it is a great body of work. I don’t see how people could call it a flop. Maybe it didn’t measure the success of her previous albums but it still sold well in this current musical climate. These days, it’s hard for artists to go gold, let alone sell a million copies or better. I don’t think a classic necessarily has anything to do with sales anyway. It’s about the quality of the music and how it resonates with people. Nas’ and Jay-Z’s first albums are considered classics although they didn’t sell well.

  • What the fuck? Are their any intelligent people left on this fucking planet? The only reason why Beyonce’s 4 album does not seem like a classic album to some idiots is because of a few reasons…for 1, SHE WAS PREGNANT! What person on this planet do you think that has the endurance and strength to do a quarter of what she did in her live performances and in her videos while being pregnant? Rihanna, Katy Perry, Chris Brown, Bieber…etc cant do that now. Being that she was a pregnant woman she also could not promote as much as she would have liked to (and still sold how much? Ok then). Not to mention, Beyonce is a true musician. she didnt conform to doing dance/pop music like EVERYONE else, so I guess some ppl had a pitty party bcuz of that. Your preferance is your preferance. Plus she is the only one out of the lozers that I named that has been writing most of all of her music and that has an ASCAP award, which is given to writers obviously for writing outstanding music. Beyonce is the truth, appreciate art for what it is and not the stupid politics surrounding it. You all are puppets and influenced by the most minut and balderdash situations. No intellect.

    • You’re apparently not one of those intelligent people. When the hell does being pregnant become an excuse for an album that isn’t qualified to be deemed a classic (whether promoted or not) become one because of poor planning on the artists part when it comes to their vagina? Keri Hilson won awards for her debut album, is that a classic? Since you “feel” your intellect is so superior to those with facts as to why 4 is no were near classic status, give us the dictionary definition (not your opinion) of a classic and see if 4 can be placed in that category..
PS: Writer???? LOL! You make yourself look even dumber than the people you try to discredit!!! Everyone who even knows what a Beyonce is KNOWS that hoe pays to be credited as a songwriter..No intellect lol! STFU you bafoon.

Beyonce’s 4 Album is a classic ask any real musician or singer. Ask people who study and know music if the 4 album is a classic. Just because you shake your ass to the latest by Chris Brown, Rihanna and 2 Chains doesn’t make you qualified to determine what is classic or not. • You try and dismiss and “call out” someone when they provide you your “facts,” yet you dont state any “facts” as to why you THINK 4 is (which we both know why you can’t)….The fact that many including myself who follow music…excuse me.. QUALITY music don’t know a 4 track from a cut off Paris Hilton’s debut album is exactly why it’s not a classic. You’re obviously sucking hard on Bey’s left nut and think whatever she puts out is “classic.” Like I said, the PUBLIC has proven it’s not, hence no major awards or recognition past her obsessed queen audience. #WheresYourFactsBitch?

The first time I met Timmy Kelly was in 2007, backstage at the Grammys. He was only 13 and he touched my heart with his voice and his love of music and life. He’s now 18 and he’s graduated high school — I’m so proud of him! Timmy was born blind, and with cerebral palsey. But this never slowed him down — he has proven to everyone, that anything is possible if you believe in yourself and work hard. In Philadelphia, he’s known as the good luck charm to the Eagles and whenever he sings the national anthem before a game they always win. His strength and determination is an inspiration. Timmy was just accepted to Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance. Congratulations Timmy!

I would have to say no. “Dangerously In Love” is and will always be considered a “classic” album from Beyonce, in my book.

  • in my opinion, it has some great songs on the album but she just didnt release them. i thought run the world, love on top, 1+1 and the others were poor single choices. She should have released ‘i was here’, ‘i miss you’ and ‘i care’ etc. So good songs but to sell 2million or 2.7 million, whatevere it is a FLOP in terms of beyonce! im sure she has quadrupled those sales on her other albums. Adele has sold alomost 4 million of her album in UK alone, that puts the album into perspective.

so no, the album ’4′ will not be remembered but thats beyonces own faut for poor single selection choices

  • 4 is my favourite album of Beyonce!! I am from Argentina and i dont speak english so well but i think that 4 is HER best album, because she mix a lot of cultures and rymths. Love on top is a Classic.

  • 4 is a classic FOR ME. she did this album because she wanted to do a thing that everything made from her. without matthew and others.. and this is beyonce’s first real “art” album. there are no market songs in album. this album is full of beyonce from a to z. her love, thoughts, hate, criticism.
I love 4 so much and 4 is classic for me. my favorite bey album.

  • 4 isn’t a classic. I think a classic album should have a huge impact in the music history. 4 didn’t have this. It’s definitely her best album, it’s vocally a masterpiece, she really freed herself to explore a new world of beats. But general people weren’t into it.
Thriller, Bad, Bodyguard, Back To Black, The Dark Side Of The Moon, Music Box, Back To Black, 21, Nevermind, London Calling are classic albums. These will be remembered for decades to come.
Beyoncé’s classics are definitely her live performances.

  • NO!
Is she capable of making a ‘classic’ album like ‘The Miseducation…” or ‘Butterfly’ or ’21′? I’m not sure.
The songs on ’4′ were good (except for that horrible first single), but everything she did on the album could be traced to other artists who did it better.
    Next try, B.

  • I think the Beyonce 4 cd is a classic or it will become a classic, & Destiny fullfield is a classic as well, me & my boyfriend had this discussion a year ago, but he said Beyonce first cd is a classic, but i cnt see myself playing her first cd like i play Mary j BLige my life cd, until she came out with the 4 album.

  • i see lots of people saying that sales has to do with whether an album is classic or not which is not true. being able to withstand the test of time makes an album a classic. if in 2012 you are still jamming to dangerously in love, then its a classic. the only classic thing about dangerously in love is crazy in love. single ladies is a classic as well, but i wouldnt say the whole i am sasha fierce album was. thats the thing with beyonce. she has yet to release a classic album, but she does have a few classic singles. i havent played the album 4 since 2 weeks after its release. but on the other hand, i can listen to bday all day long. if any of her albums should be considered a classic, it should be bday in my opinion.

  • It’s her only cohesive album. Most of her other albums have been scattered messes whereas ’4′ flows really well from one song to the next.

I doubt you can label it a classic yet though, you could only really label it a classic in a few years if people still remember it & the tracks that go with it.

  • The only reason Beyonce said she wasn’t looking for #1 singles is because she knew after RTW leaked, that it was str8 to hell from there. Classic my ass, I can’t even listen to half the CD. RTW sucks, IWH is so… (LOT, EOT, Party are nice) I feel the same through all of her albums, whether its a sad song or up-tempo. Her albums evoke no emotion.
This was not a bad album but is was so flat. It seems now a days there are different standards for a classic album.
Marvin Gaye The Beatles Janet &Michael Jackson all had innovative albums. Their albums had socially conscious songs like What’s Going On, Rhythm Nation, State Of The World, Man In The Mirror, Give Peace A Chance. It was not just about Heartbreak and cheating men, it was about pain, love and all the in betweens. Thriller, St. Pepper, Diamond Life, Dirty Mind, Back to Black, Nevermind are still remembered. When those albums hit the scene it was instantly classic, there wasn’t a debate, it was just obvious.

  • Honestly, none of Beyonce’s albums are classics. Classic albums have songs that impact not just the music industry, but drastically affect Pop culture in general. Yeah, Beyonce has monster hits like Crazy in Love, Baby Boy, Irreplaceable, Beautiful Liar, Single Ladies, If I Were a Boy and Halo, but those songs are classics simply because of their success, not because of there merit of a song. The crazy thing about all of those songs is they weren’t even written for Beyonce. Halo was for Leona Lewis, If I Were a Boy for BC Jean, Single Ladies for Britney Spears, Irreplaceable was for MJB and Baby Boy was for Ashanti. Beyonce’s albums have really good songs like Yes, Signs, Speechless, Flaws and All, Get Me Bodied, Smash into You, I Miss You and 1+1 but they’re still not classics. If Beyonce really thought 4 was a classic, she would not have released songs like RTW, Countdown, Love on Top and Party as singles, songs which clearly have mainstream commercial appeal. She would’ve let this album stand on it’s own merit like Gaga did with BTW. The only 2 singles that were actually single material were Born This Way and The Edge of Glory and possibly Marry the Night. But Judas and You and I were horrible choices for singles, which is why they weren’t huge hits and Marry the Night, kinda flopped too. Gaga spoke so highly of BTW as a whole body of work and she realy let that album stand on its own which is why it sold 7 million copies with only 2 huge hits. Beyonce only really said “well I just to perform songs like this when I get older”. Beyonce is a really good artist, but she’s not a great artist nor a iconic artist yet. She still has a long way to go. Artists like Gaga and Adele seem to genuinely know music and what it’s about and how to make it. Beyonce, IMPO seems to to do it just because. She’s tries TOOOOOOOOOOOO hard to be an legend/icon, which is why the Grammys snubbed her.

  • yes. without any questioning Beyonce “4″ is a classic album, if you think about the production she has given it that Live Band feeling, in a POP dominated Era Beyoncé has managed to keep it soulful with the styles of he 80′s and still remain on top, her icon status is untouchable everything she does is amazing. Beyonce could have given in and just done a normal pop album and thrown that out there but she took her time with this one, Beyonce “4″ has the feeling of a Grown Woman. Sales wise it may not have been wise but Vocals, Production & its Longevity will be forever known, this album has a different feeling to all her recent work. Timeless classics from 1+1 to Countdown to I Care. this woman has worked for this CLASSIC ALBUM. it’s different compared to what other artists have done.

The different beats and the different Vocal ranges slay, and when people say it’s rubbish i would love for them to go and compete against Beyoncé vocally. over the same beats.

    Beysus. is the 1.

Good album, yes. Classic album, no. Beyonce has yet to record one. However if I was to give her a classic rating for an album it would be B’Day (altho I personally think most would say her debut). That to me is her Thriller in a sense. I do think personally to her it was classic tho bcuz of the things she expressed on it. U could tell it was from where she was in her life at that time.

  • I think 4 was her best album since the B’Day era, I Am Sasha Fierce wasn’t bad but 4 GOES HARD, i’m a not die-hard fan of Bey but she went back to SANGING on this album with tracks like 1+1, I Care, Dance for You, Rather Die Young and start Over i was impressed and I think Bey’s at the point where she’s been doing what people wanted for years and now she’s just doing her thing…but i think B’Day was like her perfect album in regards to dance records and etc i remember that time when B’Day dropped that summer all i heard was Beyonce in philly, but she’s grown musically and her lyrics have more sustenance now which i like i think the next album after 4 will probably blow everyone away, i still cant believe that Bey and Jill Scott didn’t win grammy awards when their projects were great…the grammy committee doesn’t aways salute good work though

  • Anyone who thinks it’s not a classic is delusional quite honestly. Anyone who thinks it’s “mediocre” simply has deplorable taste in music.
