Epic: Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’ Enjoys 451% Sales Increase

If your name happens to be Katy Perry, it’s safe to say you’ve got quite a bit to smile about today.

For, in what can only mark a monumental moment in her career, this week saw her 2010 release ‘Teenage Dream‘ achieve a mind blowing feat, by enjoying a sales increase of 451% in the space of a single week.

Exciting details below…

Spearheaded by the release of her acclaimed ‘Popumentary’ ‘Katy Perry: Part Of Me’, the release rose by 22 spots on the Billboard 200 to #2 with sales of 76,555 copies.

Impressive, as the project is now two years old but outsold Justin Bieber’s ‘Believe’ and Usher‘s ‘Looking For Myself’, both of which were released less than a month ago.

Sat one spot beneath Chris Brown‘s ‘Fortune’, ‘Dream‘s sales boost meant she was a mere 57,000 units away from securing the #1 spot- a spot she may enjoy if sales of the album are unfazed by the release of Frank Ocean’s ‘Channel Orange‘ which is set to dethrone Brown in the coming week.

Thus far, ‘Dream’ has been certified 2x Platinum in the US, 3x Platinum in the UK and a whopping 4x Platinum in Canada, debuting with sales of 192,000 copies following its August 2010 launch.

Major!

Okay??? Umm, an album that came out a few years ago is selling better then albums that came out a few weeks ago. I bet the album came with movie tickets and counted as a sell. But still, this CD is still on top after two Rihanna CD, a Gaga and Britney. 6 #1’s and two top 3. I think this album will be our Control an will be remembered 20 years from now (as a POP album tho)

No, this is how an album suppose to be, hot for a few years, not a few weeks. People were rocking MJ and Madonna and Janet albums for years. No matter how little your album sales, you keep dropping singles and promote it more then just for a week.

I agree. I’m tired of all these throwaway albums where someone promotes 3 singles and you’re expected to just but the whole 14 dollar hint no knowing what’s on it.

Albums are supposed to last more than a year and Katy’s killing her contemporaries in terms of album sales and awards so she’s onto the right idea.

She funded a movie in support of her album and sold 76,000 copies. Stop with the “percent” You use them for Nicki too and it just exaggerates the actual succsess.

What do you do when all other sales tactics have failed besides remixing your songs to help boost the sales? you release a pointless movie that you know only the teen girls and gay queens are going to watch to help boost album sales and sales of your current single. I can’t think of any other demographic besides the gay queens and teen girls going to see that ratched movie. This album will drop tremendously next week.

I like the songs teenage dream, peacock, and wide awake. But after a certain point with his era they just started getting greedy and desperate and it gets old and annoying after a while. 2 yrs later and shes still milking this era. Most artists are already working on the follow up and ready to release it but leave it up to Katy to drag this shiy out. I wouldn’t be surprised if they released a remix album next year and included all the remixes what she’s done already and remix all the other songs.

Facts aren’t excuses. Her album was avaiable for 99 cents on Amazon and this explains why it had a huge increase this week. TD had a boost of 400% on sales!!! It shows that people were not willing to buy her album for the regular price.
She’s successful, but she isn’t that impressive album seller. She has been promoting TD for over 2 years, over 5 #1 hits, a re-release, disconteded album etc. TD ‘just’ sold 2.3 million which it isn’t that impressive. 4 sold 1.3 without a single hit and just a few live performances. Lady Gaga sold that in less than a year, without a re-release and with underperformed singles.

Maybe it’s because some of those songs would not have gotten to number 1 if she didnt release multiple versions of them. ok im not saying that Katy is an album artist, (nothing wrong with that) and teenage dream hasn’t sold that many copies….but there is something wrong with u if u think “only straight men buy full CD’s” and teenage girls or other people don’t???? LOL how messed up does that sound. my friend is straight and he has the whole teenage dream CD. im 19 yrs old and i have the full CD. and u even said it, Katy has 5 number one singles from 1 album ( 6 including part of me) , u truly believe that only gay guys and teenage girls r making this happen???? really?

Those albums came out 10 years ago when every major artist sold over 10million albums f*** tard. Welcome to 2012 where no one buys albums. Thousands of current artist would kill to have albums go 2x platinum in the U.S today

Katy’s album should be at least 5 or 6x platinum by now: AT LEAST. Hell, if you think about it, she should be rivaling Adele’s sales; long as its been out and as many hits she’s had from it. That little over 2 million she’s done is a joke and a half. I’m just laughing at how cocky fans of these silly pop girls of today are when it comes to hyping up these jokers when none of them sell worth a damn. I remember when a 2 million seller was like a “C” on your report card. Adequate, but not impressive.

Linda Perry was right. “Who wants a f*****’ Katy Perry album?” Nobody, so they just download what they hear played on the radio and don’t think about it after that.

Agree. The sales don’t match the hype. It’s that way with ALL of them…Katy, Gaga, Rihanna, Nicki, etc. They are called “it” girls but are lucky to go multiplatinum. Da f*** is that????

When Michael had 5 #1’s from Bad, the album itself was around 8 million in US sales alone. People didn’t JUST buy the singles. When TLC’s “Waterfalls” was at #1 for like 7 wks, people were simultaneously copping the CrazySexyCool album in droves.

None of these current hoes would have lasted pre-2003, back when music was a PHYSICAL experience and artists had to convince people to care enough to make an effort to get it (i.e. get in their car and drive to the record store.) Back in ’98, NOBODY would have bothered to do all that for a piece of s*** song like “Wide Awake”. But people today will go ahead and click on an app on their PC or phone to buy that crap because it’s just that easy to. People won’t spend $11.99 on her whole CD, but if Amazon slashes it to the price of less than a single, they might lazily bother. This is all very embarrassing and I’m glad I was around to see when the music industry was booming like it’s supposed to.

Standards of success are in the toilet today and that’s the only reason this latest crop of pop stars are able to sustain their careers and don’t get laughed off the block (as they should) when their album moves less than 200k during release week. Once upon a time, that would have been enough to get a major artist dropped.

You want Beyoncé to do other things besides singing because your fave can finally shine. Don’t worry. Bey is already working on her new album and two new movies.
4 sold 3 million or so without hit singles, major promo campaing. This era was a ‘flop’ because her standard has been huge for years. Katy Perry will never be able to say that she achieved 3x, 4x, 8x Platinum and Diamond albums. NEVER. Actually, she can’t even say that she’s a great vocalist, dancer or performer. LOL. She’s totally a basic b****. LMFAO. She can’t even be proud of her #1 hits singles, she used so many tricks, payola and remixes to get them that I’d be ashamed of this desperation. PATHETIC.

DEAD @ 2.3 million. You need to study charts before replying my comments. I am not here for unofficial numbers by Mediatraffic/United World Charts. I can’t. 4 sold between 2.8 to 3 million.
They claimed that Shakira’s She Wolf sold like 700k, but it sold around 2 million, according to IFPI (official).

Ok, Discounty Perry. Was the selling of the album for 99 cents the back-up plan for when the movie bombed? As a way of changing the subject? That’s what it looks like. This girl’s record label has spent soooo much money buying her hits and for what? TD is a mediocre album that hasn’t sold well despite being pushed HARD for years. So pathetic! I would seriously like to know if they have even made a profit.

Also, Katy will pass her budget of her documentary. People act as though this was a blockbuster movie. This is something she did for her fans. It wasn’t a flop. She spent two million out of her own pockets to finance it.

Are you serious she spent 2 million on a tour movie. Thats a waste of money. Beyonce has the same exact thing on DVD and she probably spent less than 5,000 dollars. Go watch I Am World Tour it’s the same concept. Tour footage with behind the scenes videos and never before seen clips. I bet you Beyonce will edit her Revel DVD herself and it will look better than this ish and she’ll probably make a whole lot more money. Katy that’s when you know your doing too much.

Actually, they spent over $12 million making the movie + budget for promo. I’d say they spent at least $15 million on her flop movie. It was expected to gross around $100 million, but it barely grossed $15 million to date. Probably, it will gross less than $25 million after all. LMFAO.
Beyoncé is an amazing DVD seller.
