Jennifer Lopez‘s shock departure from American Idol has seen many a name touted as a potential replacement. One of the most speculated is the 42 year old’s age-mate and rival Mariah Carey.
And while the diva (of all divas) remains “mumm” on the topic, her trusty husband Nick Cannon couldn’t resist voicing his opinion (a filtered version of hers, perhaps) into the mix.

Idol may not be able to “afford” Mariah, but her career could definitely afford Idol. Let’s keep it all the way 100.
For, as cemented as her legendary status is, her contemporary relevance (after a string of chart disasters and a cancelled album) is at best “untested” and at worst “hanging by a string”.
Despite her wealth of talent, there sadly exists a much-subscribed to industry age bias – which tends to commercially “write-off” females once they enter 40-street. Yet, as J.Lo showed, the “afflicted” can grant themselves relative immunity by exploiting a popular platform such as Idol; a platform which panders to the record-buying mass. Hence, how Team Mariah act like such shows are “below” her when her record sales are “below” the norm beats me.
Here’s hoping they see sense and collect that cheque!

Mariah was the highest selling female of the 90s. That means she can negotiate whatever offers she wants. Even if she does end up doing idol it is a smart move on her part to already put it out there (through her husband) that her contract would have to be huge (bigger than Jennifer Lopez’s) to consider it.

i agree with you about her career but I have to say I think we all need to stop calling other artist FLOPS. It does not make sense. All the artist people try to compare can NOT be compared. And to call Beyonce a flop is just hating. I am not coming at you, I just want us all to be honest. Beyonce is the new legend. 40 is no problem for an artist like Mariah, her and Whitney were smart and their back catalogue of music consists of classic mature timeless songs that will transcend through time.
No shade, but 40 will be a problem Rihanna if she doesn’t change her stance soon, because those songs will have nostalgia but sound dated.

Mariah’s last album was a holiday album which has sold almost or about 600k gold and that was out for only a few wks. Thats more than all of these r&b flops now. Her music speaks for itself. Her holiday album flopped like a Time-Life “Best Of” collection. It didn’t scratch the surface of the sales of her first Xmas album and was a waste of a CD. E=mc2 selling 1.5 million after Mimi went like 5-6x platinum IS a flop. And I see you conveniently left out the abysmal performance of that Impaired Angel album! Or that she had to cancel its follow up because it was shaping up to be a disaster and the public wasn’t anticipating it. LOL
In the last 10 years Mariah’s had only *ONE* real successful album. Everything else from the 2000s (from GLITTER to ANGEL) either underperformed or outright flopped, which leads me to think that her Mimi album was just a fluke.
#I Can’t @ these stunted Mariah fans still thinking it’s 1996 and that she has all the star power and hit making prowess she ever did. She’s in the exact same boat/sinking ship JLo was in pre-Idol and absolutely could greatly benefit from being on Idol, if she’s looking for a career resurgence. If she’s content with being a fading diva from yesterday then, hey…let her act like she’s too good…and let us all watch as her next album flops like the others did.

So sad that Mariah is branded a “fading diva” for continuing to work hard and put out material, when most of her peers have plainly retired and/or are living off of the memory of their glory days.
In the last ten years, Mariah put out seven albums all of which “either under performed or outright flopped”; In the last ten years, Diana Ross put out one album. Where is her “hanging by a string” article? The assessment of her contemporary relevance? Whitney put out 3; Elton John, 4; Stevie Wonder, 1; etc. etc.
Compared to the unparalleled numbers achieved by the 90′s Mrs. Tommy Mottola, the success of her recent output have been minor and specific; but she has proven to be more determined and diligent than most of the half-trick gimmicks praised on this site after their song jumps five spots up the charts.

Well, if she will be sitting in the seat that was once occupied by Jennifer Lopez, then yes, she deserves twice the amount Jennifer received. Musically, Mariah is lightyears superior to Jennifer, so naturally, she would be a more resourceful and credible judge. No offence to Jennifer Lopez.
Now, as for this article: I’m disinclined to believe that Mariah NEEDS American Idol. In 1991, Mariah wrote lyrics to a piano ballad composed by pianist Russell Freeman several years prior. Not long after Mariah released the Emotions album, Freeman retired, partly living off of the royalties he received from Emotions. Having taken that into account, just imagine the cheque Mariah cashes every Christmas/Holiday season.
Secondly: something has to be said about Mariah’s work ethic. She has exhibited more adaptability, endurance and longevity than anyone else in the business, aside from Madonna, of course. And they both do it by remaining “Mariah” and “Madonna”, without becoming an “Older Lady GaGa” or “Older Rihanna”. We can dissect piece by piece the numbers accomplished by her recent work, but those numbers are still larger than many members of the current R&B community can ever dream of. Mariah said herself that she leans towards the R&B direction because she personally enjoys listening to it. Thank God Mariah never abandoned the genre or the audience and became a trend-chasing industry puppet.
She will continue to write, produce, sing and perform the music that she connects to (whatever it may be at the time), damning the music listeners who are drowned in the tidal wave of overproduced dance music.
