New Song: Nelly Furtado – ‘The Spirit Indestructible’

Published: Tuesday 3rd Jul 2012 by Sam

With comeback effort ‘Big Hoops’ failing to ignite the charts, Nelly Furtado will no doubt be hoping its follow-up, ‘The Spirit Indestructible’, enjoys a better fate.

The cut, which is the title track of her new LP (due September 18th), was premiered live in Paris recently. However, the official studio version surfaced merely moments ago. As ever, That Grape Juice has that good good. Take a listen after the jump…

Now this, quite literally, is more like it!

Fresh, melody-led, and entirely more radio-friendly than its predecessor, the cut does a stellar job of appealing to the masses, while giving a qualitative nod to the Furtado of  ‘Whoa, Nelly’ and ‘Loose’.

A hopeful hit.

worse than Big Hoops. Shame because I really like her and Loose was epic 🙁

      i hate that i agree

      • Timago July 3, 2012

This song is complete SH. Nelly, drop the music and take a new angle on life…This sucks!!!!!

      • INCAS July 4, 2012

hmm the live version was so much better. I wish the backing vocals in the chorus were louder and harmonized better with nelly’s voice…like in the live version. Sort this sh*t out nelly, I would rather pay for the live version and not this single….. Whoever is producing nelly’s music this era isn’t doing her voice any justice. I swear Timbaland knows exactly what to do with Nelly’s voice….Loose era, Nelly had a smoother sexier sound

Her single choices have been very strange with this whole era of her music. I actually really liked this song when I heard her perform it live but this studio version is just…not good. Her voice sounds even more irritating than it did on Big Hoops and I really didn’t think that that was possible. This entire thing has just been a mess and at this point I don’t think that she’ll be able to pull it together before the album release. It’s sad because I was actually looking forward to this album but if this is a reflection of the rest of the material then she can keep it.

    Her voice……I can’t take it

I LOVE IT!!! Uplifting banger! Go Nelly!

I hope it does better than ‘Big Hoops’. If she delivers a HOT video for it, it might be quite the unpredictable hit!

P.S : Props to the producer (Darkchild, right?) These drums slayed my life!!

I need to remind to all of those who complain about her vocals, that one of her biggest hits in Europe and Australia EVER was ‘Maneater’ and her vocals on the verses of that song were no less nasal than her ‘Big Hoops’ delivery. Just saying…

Nelly’s tone is her signature. I agree that when it’s not controlled (i.e: ‘Big Hoops’), it can be quite the epic ear drum catastrophe, but you can’t seriously tell me that her vocals on this track annoy you 😕

    • virtuoso intellect July 3, 2012

I can honestly tell you that it does esp when she veered into the hook/ pre-hook, not sure which it turned out to be … didnt stick around long enough. Like Sam above said, it’s more cacophonous than it was on big hoops

    • Honestly Speaking July 3, 2012

Her voice has sounded irritating on everything that she has chosen to release from this project so far. Not only do her vocals sound irritating on this song but it sounds like an unfinished demo, you really shouldn’t discredit someone else’s opinion just because you have a delusional and irrational love for someone who apparently forgot how to sing.

      • JoArmy&CarrieUnderwoodArmy July 3, 2012

        Thank you said

      • ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) July 4, 2012

        Delusional and irrational love???

I’m not a Nelly fan. I only own ‘Loose’ and the chick has released 4 albums already! I don’t even know if I’ll buy the new one yet. I just think it’s unfair for her to get such a huge backlash. Don’t make conclusions that easily and don’t post your inaccurate conclusions as a response to my comment please.

As for discrediting opinions, I never did that. I just gave you an argument that you are free to agree or disagree with. I never insulted any one in my comment.

    • virtuoso intellect July 3, 2012

      ikr, 10 seconds-deep i was like, ” really? TGJ calls this radio-friendly ….” lol

  8. The-Truth July 3, 2012

Darkchild is recycling. The last single was a Rip off of Brandy’s I wanna Fall in Love and I swear this sounds like “Make it Last Forever” by Ciara

  9. KANG !!! July 3, 2012

    Its hot!!!
i bet the hq is better , and its radio friendly …. i need it to smash!

  17. MH July 3, 2012

The beat is crazy. I like.

  18. POP ROYALTY ( Révolution) July 3, 2012

it sound just like ” the bigger the better” , the difference that the lead single was more enjoyable.

sorry , this is a hot boiling mess. sounds like those songs in “sims 3” or “need for speed” ……..

  19. Roman July 3, 2012

Why has she become so nasal. This song is actually very hot, the break down of it is orgasmic. But it’s lacking that edge her vocals had during the Loose era… I’m sad 🙁

  20. Christian July 3, 2012

IMO I feel that Nelly, Britney, Rihanna and Shakira all have very unique voices and that their tolerable at times but for some strange reason Nelly’s is the ONLY one out of the 4 that I can’t stand even while listening to the studio version. I was cringing while listening to this song. NOT GOOD!!!! Not good at all.

    • Stephen July 3, 2012

Shakira sings better than the others u mentioned

  21. yeyay July 3, 2012

she should forget about the crappy US radio/music scene and focus on the rest of the world…US radio isn’t gonna play this either..I’ll be shocked if they do….She’s not a white lady from the UK or Canada, Riri, Nicki, Pink, Katy, or Kelly….so radio has it pre-determined that she gets no airplay….that being said Big Hoops is a better song than this…Big Hoops shoulda been a moderate hit at least…I can see radio picking it up if she gets Pitbull or FloRida on a remix because we all know they are pop music geniuses (HAHA…Hell No!), but US radio loves mediocrity…yuck!

  22. Jer July 3, 2012

What. The f***. Is she even saying. She needs to fly to India and have a seat charmIn a damn snake with that nasally thin ass voice. A1 Hott Mess.com

  23. Casual July 4, 2012

Needs a better edit. The intro was a complete turnoff, and I nearly voted “miss” before the beat kicked in. Cool track otherwise.

  24. Saetana July 4, 2012

I like this but Big Hoops is better, I actually bought it last week. I like her unusual tone and she is far from the only singer who sounds nasal some or all of the time, take Rihanna for example (who I also like). I hope Big Hoops has some chart success but this just isn’t as good ;o)

  25. Spuddy July 4, 2012

The song is nice. I like the message as well as the production. It does sound unmastered though.
