New Song: Bruno Mars – ‘Locked Out Of Heaven’

Published: Monday 1st Oct 2012 by Sam

Bruno Mars is back!

The Soul-Pop crooner debuted new single ‘Locked Out Of Heaven’ seconds ago. Produced by Mark Ronson and Mars’ own production unit, The Smeezingtons, the cut serves as the first to be lifted from the 26 year old’s sophomore LP ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’ – which arrives via Atlantic Records on December 11th.

Having sold almost 2 million copies of his first album ‘Doo-Wops & Hooligans’ in the US alone, the question of whether Mars can do it again arises. You be the judge after the jump…

OMG I am freaking out, I love Bruno Mars. Clearly one of the best songwriters in the business. He’s talent is unreal, he’s voice is so pitch perfect and smooth, not a single crack. I just love him and I love this song.

    • Benron (King Of The Navy) October 1, 2012

I dont know how he does it, he sounded amazing on “Marry You”.

      • Beyonce’s Weave October 1, 2012

I know right, I love that song too. He is just amazing, I cannot fault any vocal he does, plus the songs he writes are amazing. My favorite song he has done is “It will rain”, the first time I heard it, I had a Rihanna – Diamonds period (played it on repeat for 3 days straight). He is an amazing talent in my books.

      • Benron (King Of The Navy) October 1, 2012

It will rain is great, I think I might even buy his album this year.

      • Beyonce’s Weave October 1, 2012

I know I’m buying. It’ll be a good year for me, Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Brandy, Xtina. Cant wait.

      • Benron (King Of The Navy) October 1, 2012

I can’t wait either, Ill definitely be buying Bruno and Rihanna’s, plus if J.COLE (Rihs label mate) puts anything out Ill eat it up.

      • Beyonce’s Weave October 1, 2012

        YASSS J.COLE for sure too.

      • Benron (King Of The Navy) October 1, 2012

        You like J.COLE?

      • Beyonce’s Weave October 1, 2012

Ya I do, I like a lot of stuff I’ve heard from him, which is enough for me to buy the album.

    • Benron (King Of The Navy) October 1, 2012

  5. JoJo (istan4rihanna) October 1, 2012

His voice sounds great but not feeling the song

  6. mkigz October 1, 2012

Not a bad song – I really like the lyrics and the metaphors he uses lol. Although part of the background sounds like Grenade.
    I would give it 3.5/5

  7. That B*tch (I can’t with these delusional stans) October 1, 2012

Im sorry Bruno but I dont really like it too much.

  10. Noel October 1, 2012

Totally here for this!! This dude is so legit.can’t wait for the album. Great singer/songwriter.

  11. lol October 1, 2012

I have a love /hate relationship with this song

I love the vocals very bright and clear , the adlibs in the background remind me of Michael jackson ‘ “beat it” , the rock pop sound is nice , but doesn’t sound generic or like a typical radio song made for radio but i hate the lyrics almost like he’s equating s** or his women on the same level or status with God or religion … almost mockingly… the lyrics are very faux -religion ,like Gaga something gaga would write

    • Benron (King Of The Navy) October 1, 2012

I somewhat agree, his album is even called “UnOrthodox Jukebox*

  12. Mr. Popularity October 1, 2012

    His voice is so crisp!

  13. Casual October 1, 2012

I’m a Bruno Mars fan, but I’m going to need a few more spins.

This song takes me back to the early 80s – the Police, the Romantics.

  14. Monstarebel October 1, 2012

Its okay my baby daddy Bruno Mars is bout to slay these other n*****

    • Ren October 1, 2012

      You’re a f*****.

  15. MC October 1, 2012

His vocals and the production are pretty good, but I am not really into the actual song. I’ll give it a couple of listens. I think this song will fare well on the charts and do well commercially. Does this song remind anyone of “We are young” by Fun? I think a couple of beat points and the production makes it sound like that song. Anyways I hope he does well because he is a talented man.

    • Benron (King Of The Navy) October 1, 2012

Omg, you jsut compared it to We are young, I hate that song with a passion. I disagree though, the production was kinda lacking at points in the verses but his voice carried it. Not his best but a nice tune, Im intrested for his next project.

      • MC October 1, 2012

Lol. Its just that some points in this song reminded me of “we are young” I don’t particularly like that song. I still think this song is not it, but I agree his voice pulled through. I too am interested in his future projects and will tune in to see how it turns out.

    • Benron (King Of The Navy) October 1, 2012

Im replying to your comment up here that you posted down there because there is more room.

I do not know, Rihanna just has a spark. Her visuals were the first thing that got me, and then the tone of her voice really pulled me in. She and I have similar attitudes and opinions (No, I am not ‘thug life”) at times and she is just very relatable.

I like Rihanna more as a person, her music is good too. I know she does not WRITE as often as Mariah, or sing like Whitney, or even dance like Janet but she tries and I appreciate it. She is very s***, fun and theatrical and I will continue to support her through this.

    • Benron (King Of The Navy) October 1, 2012

(Continued) But I know that she is very hit and miss and I shouldn’t invest all of my “stan energy to her” so Im experimenting with music types and seeing what I like. (Hence me siting J.cole, Chris brown and Sean Paul as my other faves) I am starting to like Bruno as well, so time will tell. I was checking for pink but she bored me, I tried to give brandy a try but she wasn’t really doing it either. So yah.

      • MC October 1, 2012

        Cool stuff.
Well, I stan for Mariah, Whitney, MJ, etc (mainly Mariah tough) because of their music and not their personal lives. I like them as individuals, but what pulled me to them (especially Mimi) was their voices/styles/lyrics. There is always a Mariah song when I’m sad, happy, excited, playful, depressed, mad, and sometimes just random feelings. I feel like her music really speaks to me. I also appreciate her success and the name she built for herself. I love people with talent. I have a naturally high standard for everything, including myself and my musical preferences so that’s why you always see me defending the legends. Even though I’m 16 I still find myself being pulled into the old 80s and 90s era of music and social standards than this era. My friends don’t connect with me musically and wonder why I listen to old songs. I think to sum it all up, I was born in the wrong era of time. Somebody find a way to send me back.

      • Benron (King Of The Navy) October 1, 2012

Im sure there are some people in your school with similar prefrences. There is Rihanna music for every feeling Im feeling aswell, Rated R for when Im angry or feeling like a ballad. And TTT for when I want a catchy tune/ballad to sing along and dance too. She is not perfect, but of the current artist, I do favor her the most.

I know you think she is a gimmick but you might (emphasis on might) Like songs like some songs from RATED R like Stupid in Love, ColdCase Love and Fire Bomb.

But, since I do listen to a different style then you, what do you listen to when you want to dance?

      • MC October 1, 2012

I have always been dememed as “parent” by my friends due to my constant fuss over them and maturity. I honestly could care less about connecting with kids at my school who mainly grove to Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, One Direction, Rihanna (no offense), Psy, Beyonce, *insert anything that is currently “hot” * I could care less about 16 and 17 years old than act less than their age.

I usually listen to Usher, Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown (sometimes), Michael Jackson, some Beatles, some Prince, some Tina Turner, some James Brown (my dads favorite), lots of Ethiopian traditional and modern songs, etc when I feel like dancing.

BTW I think Rihanna’s best song, vid, and creative thoughts to date are Man Down and We found love.

      • Benron (King Of The Navy) October 1, 2012

I knew you would love the song Man down, Man down is the ish. I dislike most of the artists you named and I dont get to hear many traditional ethopian songs. Maybe I can check them out with some doru wut and Ningera 😛 some time.

      • MC October 1, 2012

        You should 😉

    • JOHNVIDAL October 2, 2012

omg are u only 16? By your taste in music I thought you were older 🙂
I never had the typical taste in music when I was that age either. Tina, Mariah, Whitney, Celine, Alanis… yes; Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears… just NO. Being a kid or a t*** doesn´t mean you have to like basic stuff. That´s why i don´t accept the excuse of Taylor Swift, Justin Beiber, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and the rest being loved by the kids. Those must be basic kids. Of course when you grow up you like more an more different kinds of music, but still, you should know what talent is when u are a kid too
I also agree, the main thing is music and talent. Not how nice a girl seems. Can´t believe Rihanna and Britney Spears have fans cos they are nice and cool persons LOL

      • MC October 2, 2012

Yeah, I always been told I seemed much older than I actually am, I’ve even been referred to as a “parent” by people my age before. I agree about the talent thing.
“Can´t believe Rihanna and Britney Spears have fans cos they are nice and cool persons LOL” Lol indeed. Kids my age don’t not care to investigate musically and scrape beneath the “trends” to find real talent.

  16. Benron (King Of The Navy) October 1, 2012

I used to not ike Bruno, because At the time I was not here for ballads. But slowly thinking about it, “Marry You” “Liqour Store blues” and many of his songs are definitely my taste, Ill have to buy this with diamonds when I can finally get my ass to the mall tommorrow.

This song is geat and nothing else can be said, Bruno will indoubtly go number one, get a whole string of hits and hopefully pull an ‘All of the lights” (a song with to many damn people) and collab with all my faves. Rihanna, J.cole, Chris Brown, and Sean Paul.

    • Beyonce’s Weave October 1, 2012

YASSSS A Bruno Mars & Rihanna collab would blow my socks off. I would have to call in sick that day, buy brand new speakers and wait for my eviction notice because I would play it full blast on RIHpeat. Please Please Please music gods, make it happen.

      • Benron (King Of The Navy) October 1, 2012

Just think of it, Beautiful like Diamonds in heaven.

But I wanna see Rihanna bring out the dark in him like “It will rain” but I want him to bring out her ballad-ness and attitude like stupid in love.

        What would you think?

      • Beyonce’s Weave October 1, 2012

Ya, I agree, Riri bringing our Bruno’s dark and emotional side would be awesome but I would love it if Riri channeled more “Fool in love”, that song just does all sorts to my emotions, you can tell that came straight from her heart.

And Bruno Mars or Ne-Yo should pen the song together, now that would blow everything in sight out of the way, after Russian Roulette, I never question Ne-Yo on his song writing skills.

    • MC October 1, 2012

” (a song with to many damn people) and collab with all my faves. Rihanna, J.cole, Chris Brown, and Sean Paul.” LOL! Chris Brown is now your fave? I could have sworn the Navy or Navi hated him up until Rihanna said she loved him during the Opera interview. Is he now forgiven or is it temporary? Anyways what is is about Rihanna that makes her your fave? What does she do for you that you don’t from other artists?

      • Beyonce’s Weave October 1, 2012

The Navi is torn on Chris Brown, some like him, some don’t.

      • Beyonce’s Weave October 1, 2012

I don’t know about others but IMO, what makes Rihanna a standout act like Madonna is she can do anything. She can sing RnB, Pop rock, Reggae, Electro Euro Pop/House and Adult Contemporary pop (Russian Roulette, Diamonds) and still sound excellent and make it work. Very few artists can do that, some just sing RnB their whole career, others cannot venture out in places Riri dares to venture in and still be successful.

Every Riri album you get since Good Girl Gone Bad, you cannot get bored because you get a lot of variety, you get a bit of everything and it just keeps me ever so interested. People think Riri started the dance thing in the LOUD era which is not true because she did it a long time ago with “please don’t stop the music” and “Disturbia”.

I also like that she re-invents herself, every person in marketing knows that re-inventing yourself is good for the brand. Just look at Colgate for example, they come out with new packaging for the same products every now and then, it is smart marketing the way Riri re-invents herself.

I also like her personality, with Riri, I feel she is not some super important celebrity I have to worship, no, she comes off as just like everybody else, that one girl who hangs out with everybody and can have a laugh with you. She is so down to earth and real and I just love it.

      • Benron (King Of The Navy) October 1, 2012

I grew up on JUST him music, so even with him annoing me with his tomfoolery and twitter rants I still check for him.

He was the s*** back in the day, FOREVER WAS MY SONGGGGGGGGGG!!

      • MC October 1, 2012

        @Beyonce’s Weave
Rihanna’s voice sounds good in the studio not live. Any artist can sound good/ record all types of genres, but what is the meaning if they can’t perform it live and give it to you performance wise? Anyways thank you for sharing candidly.

        @Benron(King Of The Navy)
Are you really actually 15?! I thought you were joking last time. If you are 15 it explains your musical preferences (don’t take this the wrong way…)

      • Beyonce’s Weave October 1, 2012

        @ MC

Even Madonna sounds good in the studio, Rihanna and Madonna bother never claimed to be singers, they both have the X-Factor, that special something that keeps people interested and have fun at their concerts. It is not all about singing but the overall value of the music, RIhanna’s music is good and has got great value, that’s what makes her great. She never claimed to be a Whitney, she did however say she wants to be like Madonna. Nothing wrong with that.

      • Benron (King Of The Navy) October 1, 2012

Just turned 14, (by YOUR musical prefrences I thought you were like and would laugh at me for being waay younger than you.) you thought I WAS old?

      • MC October 1, 2012

        @Beyonce’s Weave
To this I can agree. But what makes it hard for me to appreciate Rihanna is the fact that she never does anything on stage! Janet wasn’t the best singer, but she gave one of the best performances. Madonna wasn’t the best singer, but she gave theatrical performances w/ dances etc. Mariah, Celine, Whitney weren’t dancers but they slayed vocally. What does Rihanna have to offer if her voice isn’t it and her performances are it? Its a hard pill for me to swallow.

      • Beyonce’s Weave October 1, 2012

        @MC

But Rihanna’s performances are very visual, especially on tour. For example her performance on SNL of WHYB was very visual, probably the biggest set in SNL history. On her LOUD tour, she gave many visual performances. I’m sure even Riri knows she is not the best singer, best dancer but she does bring it on tour which is why I cannot wait for the Diamonds world tour.

  17. JER October 1, 2012

Too much yelling on an otherwise great catchy song

    • Luis October 1, 2012

I love some of his songs but he always sings like someone is squeezing his balls :/ it gets irritating after a while.

i do love the songs and melodies, don’t get me wrong. but i’m sorry he sounds like someone is beating the s*** out of him

  18. Chachanana12 October 1, 2012

Omg this has got 2 b my favorite comments section no one is cursing each other out or being rude n disrespectful . I totally agree with MC but I will say I’m only….12 I hate 2 admit but. right now I’m watching Cadillac records now Bey is singing I’d rather go blind…. “than to c u walk away from me chile well u c I love u so much” it’s on that part I actually like her cover more than Etta’s. My sister makes fun of me cause my list is filled with Whitney swv destinys child guinwine new edition Boys 2 men d’angelo mary j blige old songs u remind me sweet thing real love etc I did my 90s first ( favorite era) I’m listening 2 end of the road now. I’m going 2 do updated music tomorrow MJ mc Tina Etta Aretha Chaka Diana etc-the legends this Saturday cause that’s gonna take time. I also have a lot of Beyonce 2 Rihanna (we all want love n watch n learn) bout 5 Chris brown. But Beyonce my probably my fave. I know I sound like a tipacal 12 year old bout my fave but u know I love her..,oo DC “Girl” on “girl u don’t have 2 b hiding to say he hurt u” yay Rihanna is okay though. I really don’t like her like I used 2 since loud my latest song that was my ish was hard but u know.,, I prefer her personality over her music. But I like no hate cause the one about rihannna breaking comment record is a MESS. They just hating on Bey. I stopped reading beyonce n Rihanns comments like a month ago.

    • MC October 1, 2012

Its okay to be on this site with your parents approval because your a little young, but otherwise I think you have a surprisingly great taste in music for the most part. Well, keep on feeding your hunger for music. 😀

  19. SBC19 October 1, 2012

Wack song. Wack singer. Not gonna buy it.

Bruno, One Of The Most Talented Artists On This New Generation Full Of Pretty Face-Talenless Pretending Artists\Singers! His Live Performances Of ”Run Away” Were Just SICK!

  21. Hilly October 1, 2012

This is good, really good! I love the mix of pop, rock and soul! Thank God it’s not an electro song! And he sounds really good!

  22. mr.m October 1, 2012

    FLOP M*****

  23. theman October 2, 2012

Very talented as an artist. This is a great song for pop radio.

  24. POP ROYALTY ( RUDE BOY) October 2, 2012

finally something that doesn’t sound like what we hear in the radio by a talented M A L E artist.

i like it , but dear bruno , this sound like any songs from his last album , like “marry you” for example ….. but overall , i approve 🙂

and i don’t like the album title ➡

  25. BohemianChic October 2, 2012

The more I listen to this song, the more I like it. I’m not normally into “pop” music, but Bruno just does something for me. I think it’s the fact that he has great vocals, performs live, no playback or dj but a live band (including horns) and background singers. He also strictly uses real/live instruments for recording his music, which is damn near unheard of when it comes to chart artists. Plus, his pop records are never stereotypically pop, as in ‘the sound of what’s hot at the moment’ pop. He definitely has the makings to become a legend.

  26. lola October 2, 2012

I really don’t like Bruno Mars’ music. It consists of generic pop ballads most of the time. I respect some things about him, like the fact he uses live instruments, and puts effort into his music and singing, but I never could get into him. That album cover is disgusting…it looks like an old hooker posing. This song is EXTREMELY REPEATITIVE and not in a good way. The vocals…. I actually think it sounds like he’s yelling more than belting out the song and the single doesn’t sound hit worthy.

  27. JOHNVIDAL October 2, 2012

I like it. Only first listen but I already like it
Talent to the top please, like it usually was 15 years ago! Is it that much to ask???

  28. EMMA October 3, 2012

I LISTEN TO THE SONG REPEATEDLY AND BELIEVE… I LIKED IT EVEN MORE.. ACTUALLY I LOVE IT!!! BRUNO CAN SING ANY GENRE..POP, ROCK, RAGGAE, R N B…HE CAN PLAY GUITAR AND DANCE…SONG WRITER AND A HUMBLE ARTIST…. in my opinion he is genius and talented human being!!! BRUNO ROCKS MY WORLD!

  29. april February 5, 2013

im not going to lie, I f****** hate this song.
    its annoying and sounds hippie.
