Must Hear: Leona Lewis – ‘Shake You Up’ (Produced By Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins)

Published: Monday 22nd Oct 2012 by Sam

After a rocky few years musically, Leona Lewis is back.

The vocal powerhouse is riding high on the UK charts with her third studio album ‘Glassheart’, which packs a solid collection potential smashes – the most notable being ‘Shake You Up’.

Produced by hitmaker Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins, the track has been clocking up many a spin here at TGJ HQ. And with good reason too. It’s sublime.

Take a listen below…

Audio fire!

With its 80’s, Synth-Pop sound and vocal melisma, the cut gives a nostalgic nod to many a Whitney Houston uptempo and -for us- serves as a great roadmap to the type of lane Leona should play in more.

Stellar.

This girl has so much potential. A voice will get you no where if you aren’t doing music that people can relate to….(Adele is a prime example of that kinda success).

Oh well…At least she had 2 hits in the U.S….Bleeding Love & Better With Time. :-/

Her label are choosing good songs for her but not her great ones. This song is great.

I agree with you, her label SUCKS they should release SHAKE YOU UP, GLASSHEART & SUGAR as singles . also I think she needs a better team that can show her voice. IMO or she’ll fail I almost think that’s what syco want for her.

  3. Monstarebel October 22, 2012

I Know it’s hard for producers to do music her but damn this ain’t it. No one can seem to understand her lane.

  7. IDK October 22, 2012

  12. Hilly October 22, 2012

This is really good, is it in the album?

  13. Gilberto October 22, 2012

    It sounds good.

  14. Auntie_Jackie October 22, 2012

It’s good! I like it. I think it could be a U.S. hit! Her lane isn’t defined because producers don’t know what to do with people who can actually sing anymore.

    • Dev October 22, 2012

Disagree. As an artist who has had chance after chance to make a success of herself/brand Leona is yet to take the reigns of her career and is being directed in what to do.
I truly believe that Leona believed in Sprit or was excited about her job because that is the best vocal preformance she gave, since its been artist direction. Any artist that has faith in their music regardless if its a hit or not sings we passion and belief, Leona doesn’t do that, she just sings as if empty and void of emotion. There is no lane for leona until she takes over the driving and puts herself in it.

You’ve made some good points, passion and emotion, not just a great singing voice, will get you to the next level.

This is givin gme a tad to much Rihanna! I am not a fan but her last single TROUBLE is my jam. This I thik will do well on the Pop Charts and they are looking to push another European/UK act in the USA so this might be her chance to finally make it in America.

  16. KD October 22, 2012

She looks amazing in that pic.

  17. Peter Griffin October 22, 2012

“Can you turn the music up a little bit please”, how dead does her voice sound when she says that! Leona ‘doing average uptempo’ > Leona ‘doing ballad all the time’.

    • Matthew Charlery-Smith October 22, 2012

True, I was thinking the same thing.

  18. bibi93 October 22, 2012

    Very good song!!

  19. my hip, my back October 22, 2012

    It actually sounds really good.

  20. UMo October 22, 2012

Don’t love it or hate it. It’s “ok.”

  21. Matthew Charlery-Smith October 22, 2012

The music has a similar sound to Kelly Rowland’s “Turn It Up” from her last album. I don’t like this. the snare drum is bad and it has Leona doing her usual belted notes. Truth is the girl sings with no soul.

She needs backing singers with heavier voices. Whitney and Mariah understood this. Newbies like Christina, Beyonce and Leona etc think they can do it all due to their extensive ranges. It’s samey and boring!

Shake you up is a good song, but I to You is a “bombazo”
