New Video: Solange – ‘Losing You’

Published: Monday 1st Oct 2012 by Rashad

Four long years have passed since Solange released her critically acclaimed sophomore set ‘Sol-Angel & The Hadley Street Dreams’.

Fast forward to today and the eclectic star is ready for round three, moments ago serving up the lead single from the as yet untitled project. Christened ‘Losing You’, the track and its accompanying video premiered literally seconds ago. As ever, we have your first listen…

‘Losing You’ may just be a winner! A catchy 2012 ode to the ‘Wanna Be Starting Somethings’ (Michael Jackson) and ‘All Night Longs’ (Lionel Richie) of the early 80s, Knowles has certainly built a career on playing on the tunes of yesteryear.  If such homage will finally pay off in her favor remains to be seen, however.  For, despite the high regard for the fashionista’s eclecticism, the tune is not exactly the most radio friendly.

Here’s hoping the rest of Miss Knowles offerings tip toe that fine line of staying true to herself while still serving hits that go side-by-side with radio.  “Losing” may very well be the start.

    LOVE IT

    • whocares October 2, 2012

Don’t understand how she and Beyonce can be related. Solange is just on another level intellectually. While Beyonce has peanuts for brains. LOL

      • whocares October 2, 2012

and love the vibe of this vid. reminds me a bid of Janet Jackson’s Got til it’s Gone and Find someone to call my lover vids. Greatness at it’s greatness.

  2. Monstarebel October 1, 2012

guuuuur GoodFUCKINGBye!!!!!! did we really need that long intro for this wack song UGH!!! Shes clearly stuck in the 70s/80s so over it xo

    • CHILE PLEASE!! October 2, 2012

I agree…………she’s just trying to be very different so no one can compare her to Beyawnce! This was wack as hell! & her vocals sucked c*** hard! NEXT!

      • Monstarebel October 2, 2012

@ChilePlease okaaaaay!! idk why people on here are acting like its hot smh

    • whocares October 2, 2012

      I’m guessing you’re 15. right? LOL you’ve gotta be.

  3. Beyonce’s Weave October 1, 2012

Firstly I would just like to say that I love Soalnge’s hair. She made a good decision going natural because her hair has grown so much, is fuller and is making her look mighty fierce.

Secondly The song is just OK to me, I will say that her vocals have gotten much better, she is sounding crispy clear on this song so good job on that front.

Lastly I am very disappointed with the music video. When she said she was filming it in South Africa, I didn’t think she would go to the townships. I’m sure many South Africans would have liked it if she showcased more of the city like Cape Town which is beautiful, showcased more of the new black middle class which is doing much better in the New SA than they were under Apartheid. If she showcased more of the nicer parts of SA, the parts of Africa we never get to see on TV instead of sticking to the stereotype. Now Americans are going to remain ever more ignorant of how SA is and will think it is just a bunch of people living in the townships.

    • ck October 2, 2012

I understand your point a lot of western people just have a biased perception of Africa but I am from Ghana myself and i have been to SA a few times and the city is just beautiful.

But she didn’t do anything wrong because even though she went to a village she showed them having fun, laughing, dancing not crying, begging, with no clothes etc. like the media always does. The villages or townships are not always what people and the media make them seem. Not everyone in the villages have a bad life. And yes south Africa like most of Africa has really nice and beautiful places and there are a lot of rich people who live in mansions, drive bentleys, rolce royce etc. But the problem we all have in common is the huge gap between the rich and the poor. There is nothing wrong with showing a township or village because as long as the wealth is not distributed properly among the nation this will stay a part of Africa,

Am proud to be an African but I say it as it is.

    • KING-BREEZYONCÉ October 2, 2012

@Beyonce Weave: You sounds really smart for an Hoenna Titanic 😆

    • Justin October 2, 2012

I totally disagree with you BW. You are looking at it in a negative way which is always paired with our townships. Who care’s what the west thinks, some of them don’t know where Canada is on the map.
Solange’s sound has a 60’s, 70’s influence and she needs to portray that in her videos as well. If you think back to those times in SA the most fashionable, artsy, musically talented people and all the good parties came from Gug’s and Sophiatown. That’s where all the creativity was and that’s what she is portraying in the video.

    • RymeReason October 2, 2012

I disagree with your statement. I’m from South Africa and I am not offended. Most people by now should know that South Africa has beautiful cities and towns that pale in comparison to Venice and Miami beaches, as well as areas like Beverly Hills. We see South Africa on a major scale now in the USA on movies and in reality shows where the affluent suburbs are captured. She wanted the artistic feel of the historic townships.

Like @Justin stated, the townships are known for the artsy fashionable vibe where popular music originated in the Aparthied era. This is the same vibe that Janet captured in her “Got till it’s Gone” video. You can see the similar fashion. The people in Janet’s video were supposed to be in the shabeens of the townships partying. If anyone still thinks people are riding on elephants and eating with Lions and Tigers than I pitty them for their ignorance.

It’s 2012 and there is too much information out there to still have the media control your perceptions of African countries and cities. Google Cape Town, South Africa and see what beautiful images pop up.

      • RymeReason October 2, 2012

I meant Venice and Miami beaches pale in comparison to South African beaches. Also Table Mountain in Cape Town is officially one of the 7th Wonders of the world.

    • Stoney-Brie October 3, 2012

I’, sorry but u really don’t know what you are talking about dear. Everything she did on the video is on point, why go to places that looks like new york or atlanta to shoot a music video in South Africa with the whole SA vibe behind it?????

  4. Paul October 1, 2012

    It’s actually very good. Wow!

  5. Mo October 1, 2012

I LOVE how different she and Beyoncé are from one another. They’re both just amazingly talented in their own right. Love it!

    • whateva October 2, 2012

she might not have made it big in the music industry but she has a modeling career with NEXT modeling management one of the top three modeling agency in the world.

    • Lax October 2, 2012

You go Solange, and don’t let your sister THUGyonce effect you.

  17. christinastherealtalent October 2, 2012

I almost lost interest within the first minute until she decided to start singing. I love the beat and her vocals seemed to have improved dramatically, either that or they used auto tune. Anyway, I love that Solange and Beyonce and 2 completely different artists. Solange doesn’t really fit into the trend of music that’s popular right now and she never has. The only thing I could say is that Solange leave the choreography to her back up dancers and just focus on singing.

    • Lax October 2, 2012

Yes her and Beyonce or two 2 Entirely Different People,
and so are all of the Other Cazillion of very different and Unique Artists around the World. If yo ass can see a different in Solange and Beyonce SURELY yo can see the different in all of the Others, cough*, cough*, cough* and yes i am talking to yo Hateful Ass Christina,,,,You comment lets me know that you are as full of “Shyt As A Christmas Turkey, Boo, boo. 18. jr kitty October 2, 2012

LOL AT PEOPLE WHO THINK HER HAIR IS REAL!!

      • jr kitty October 2, 2012

oops that pic is from june 2012. but my point is still valid. thats not her hair. it doesnt matter how well u take care of your hair its all based on genetics. most black women cant grow long hair. sorry but its true.

      • millhouse October 2, 2012

Solange is wearing a lacefront wig/// it would take Solange atleast 5 years to get her hair to that length naturally…. trust me i know… im natual -_-

      • Beyonce’s Weave October 2, 2012

She had a twist out in the video, a twist out can sort of enhance the length of your hair. How did Kimmaytube grow her hair in 3 years?? If she flat-ironed her hair, it would look even longer. She is not wairing any lace-front wig, that is her real hair.

      • fanya October 2, 2012

a twist out aint gon do that much to your hair! please! that aint her real hair.

  19. You Mad? October 2, 2012

  20. SuxMyCockieness October 2, 2012

    The video + The song – – – – > > EMBARRASSING TO SEE, DISAPPOINTING, LAME

Going to South Africa is no longer one of my dreams after this GAPING, FARTING COW’S ASSHOLE of a video.

  25. JCrewedup October 2, 2012

This is SO good. Definitely not for the mainstream crowd (thank goodness).

    Totally into it.

    • Beyonce’s Weave October 2, 2012

It’s a twist out, that’s why it looks so long. You should Youtube how to do a twist out, there are countless tutorials.

  26. kevin October 2, 2012

LOL @ the people lookin at her like…who the f*ck is dis gurl?

    • N October 2, 2012

      Exactly.

They gave the 87 y.o. Granny Mohamambala 17 Rands for just a 3-sec video shoot while she sits on a chair, and that helped her to feed her children and buy a new house TOGETHER!

i LIKE IT AND its different!!!!! looks like she had alot of fun doing ths video i wish her the best

  28. Beyonce’s Kryptonite October 2, 2012

The song is REALLY GOOD! It reminds me of a Jody Watley-meets-Madonna song of the mid 1980’s while sounding very current. The video is very beautiful and artistic as is Solange.

  30. Casual October 2, 2012

Look at the wildly conflicting opinions here . . . classic Solange.

But personally, I’m not sure what I think of this.

  31. Realest October 2, 2012

Anyone who doesn’t like this doesn’t appreciate good quality music! It may not be an “i sold out at the integrity of my music” generic, expected hit but it is a deliciously, easy listening tune that most def is a huuuuuuge breathe of fresh air for those of us GROWN FOLKS who appreciate musicality, vocal depth and #GrownMusic. Yall say it sounds old but your fav’s tracks sounds like EVERYBODY else’s and fits right into the cookie cutter.. Keep doing you Solo, lol you know most the haters on here were probably in single digits (age) when your 1st album dropped #FuckTheyKnowAboutAnything. Bravo! keep it coming!

    • Lax October 2, 2012

      Different strokes for different folks,,,

  32. POP ROYALTY ( RUDE BOY) October 2, 2012

    that was so Good.

she’s my fav knowles. she has her own crazy style and just … crazy !! this gave me 80’s madonna tease and the production is hella perfect.

    good job solange. 😀

    • N October 2, 2012

      OK I’m just telling you.

Even Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Getting Back Together” >>>>> This KRAP.

At least, we get to know how many friends she has in school and how they’re doing at school. This s*** is EMPTY, LAME.

  33. I’m not throwing shade, but… October 2, 2012

I don’t dislike it, but i’m not sure i like it. The vocals and the beat don’t seem to go together as if this is a remix from the original song…. so i await a remix that might blend with the vocals better.
The video, yeah, its okay and been done before, but to be honest it could’ve been filmed anywhere, from the exclusive clip we saw a few weeks back with the card and kissing i expected a better video.

  34. queen ciara best performer ever is back!!!!! October 2, 2012

  35. Speaks Truth October 2, 2012

Yessssss I love this song…. It’s so pretty omg…. I’m in love with her dances moves, this was a cute video & song, I like

  36. BEYONCE’S BODYGUARD October 2, 2012

    GOOD JOB Solange!

Shout out to Cape Town, I’m from Johannesburg.

  37. millhouse October 2, 2012

Uhhhh, didnt Janet Jackson make this video already…. and she did a better job at it. I thought I was gona like the video from the pix, but i was wrong cuz i dont like it

    • BitchICan’tEvenSpellWelfare October 2, 2012

Yes, it’s very “Got Til It’s Gone” but that’s what makes this particular video so dope. It’s an explicit reference.

But if you don’t like it, that’s cool.

    • B Lamont October 2, 2012

Yeah…it’s like a mashup of Escapade and Got Til It’s Gone!!

  38. Todd October 2, 2012

I love it ! The song is great, the video is great!

  39. BLK PHAT BOOTY October 2, 2012

  40. Oh Yeah!!! October 2, 2012

Sounds good, I just wish she would stop dancing like Beyonce! Be your own person Solange, you are Talented!

  41. IMO October 2, 2012

Personally, I liked it, a lot. I’ve played it a couple of times. I like the fact it’s a bit different and no typical, mainstream R&B. Vocals and video are ok

  42. Matthew Charlery-Smith October 2, 2012

The song was good, although the intro was TOO long.

    The video however…

It did NOT go with the song at all. The tune is bright, happy, skippy even. We are faced with a dull video which doesn’t go with the song’s tune or lyrics at all. She’s still young so why couldn’t she have a video made up with props and fantasy like a film set?

Where’s Mandy Moore’s video director when you need him?

Either way, it’s a credible song and no one will be able to accuse her of making bad music after this…even if it is on Terrible Records!

  43. RoyalKev October 2, 2012

Solange is a dope artist and I’m a big fan, but this song doesn’t suit her. Sorry, but that’s the truth! Vocally she doesn’t do the song justice. It’s a little too girly for her and at times her voice (especially in the verses) sounds empty. I don’t need her to scream on the track, but she’s singing without any conviction or personality.

I think Slange shines when she tackles something a bit more abstract or complex. That works on her, this doesn’t! She’s still a great songwriter and cool person, but this sounds like something she should have skipped out on. Janet and Madonna would do better on this track, or anyone in that lane. Still love Solo though!

  44. soulmusiclover October 2, 2012

gotta love her style and vibe!

  45. JOHNVIDAL October 2, 2012

Ok this is my first time listening to this Solange girl (please Sam stop trying to make it seem like she can make hits or she had in the past cos just NO)…. and I have to say that wow she is much more of an artist (musically) than generic, repetitive and average Beyonce
It´s not like this is a masterpiece but it sounds so cool and it shows artistry. Obviously she will never have a hit but I´m sure she´s not searching for that

    • Matthew Charlery-Smith October 2, 2012

Hey Vidal, which part of Spain are you from? De donde eres?

  46. Xertified October 2, 2012

First off what does this video or song have to do with Beyonce? I’m convinced that some of you hate Beyonce so much that Kelly,Michelle,Solange,Letoya,Latavia,…hell even Farrah could release a song that sounds like pure S*** and you would still say it’s great or better than anything Beyonce has done. You know it takes alot more energy to be a hater than it does to just say nothing at all…Solange was a dancer for DC.So why can’t she dance when she gets good and ready. You guys are always reaching over stupid s***.

Anyway…the video seems so low budget.
The song on the other hand is actually very good. I’ve been a solange fan since solo star. Of course this song isn’t for the mainstreamers who only listen to certain artist just because they are popular. It has a very retro cool feel to it. I like that the beat is up tempo while the lyrics are deep and kind of more serious. A-(The video miss Knowles! no ma’am!)

don’t leT beyonce be a star NO MORE!!!!!!

  49. justsayin October 2, 2012

what is sad? whats sad is that you people do not appreciate MUSIC. It has to be “so much” dancing, p^ssy popping, and fashion w/ vocals.
This song is very good. The video was beautiful. I’m sure if it was Beyonce, RiRi, or any of the females that you “shallow folks” speak of, it would of been Amazing. There is nothing wrong with this video nor the song,
Ya’ll should really stop being so negative, its not cute.

  50. Oggie ‘Singer’ October 2, 2012

LOVE IT!!!!!!! its fresh and just makes me exhale, cos its so damn good and the video is brilliant too, the track reminds me of 80’s janet with a new twist which is Solange, i love her and this is a GREAT joint 10/10

  51. Nayah82 October 2, 2012

I like it! I think she’s very refreshing and fun.

  52. RichnBlack11(JUST LIKE BEY) October 2, 2012

    cute vid I LOVE IT

  53. Papa Preached October 2, 2012

Wow a whole bunch of non factors telling us what Solange “needs” to do. How about you go get a record deal and do it yourself!

    – Just because she’s influenced by an era doesn’t mean she “needs” to portray it in her video. Kinda cliche, u think?
    – Yes it’s shot in a rural area but I don’t see not one sad face or hungry children.
    – She makes music cause apparently she loves it. She does it different because she can and your mad because you can’t.

  54. pat October 2, 2012

dang…her and kelly’s new songs sound like rejects from Janet’s control album

  55. yarrrrr October 2, 2012

I like it! Who cares if it flops, look at the calibre of songs getting number ones nowadays.

NOT gettiing into the top 10 is usually sign you’ve created something worth while nowadays. I listened to that diamonds song and was so shocked at the shittyness and then in the next few hours it was number 1 on a kagillion charts. F*** the charts! lol who cares anymore.

I’d hate to be a musician right now, imagine when you were putting out records back in the day you were competing with the michaels jacksons and princes’s – people who were actually muscians. Nowadays who cares if you win, you’re just competing with the bottom of the barrel anyway.

  56. d October 2, 2012

this video and imagery is VERY JANET JACKSON GOT TIL ITS GONE. THIS IS AN ARTIST BEYONCE NEEDS TO GIVE US CLASSICS AND SUBTANCE LIKE SOLANGE

  57. Stan for the one you love October 2, 2012

I thought I read Beyoncé was going to have a cameo in this video? 🙁 Very disapointed this didn’t happen. I won’t be supporting her music because of this.

  58. credits October 2, 2012

The aesthetic is quite similar to rihanna’s ‘we found love’ and cee-lo’s ‘no one’s gonna love you’ but alot more innocent and clean, just plain fun. With this production she is in a lane of her own at this point, it’s like dance without the dance. it’s iight.

  59. B_STANNING (BEY STAY WINNING) October 2, 2012

GO SOLO I loved it. She truly has her own thing going on.

  60. Adrian October 2, 2012

she really starting to come into her own fashion wise and the song is cute.

  61. morgat October 2, 2012

song is really good, so fresh, 80’style, go Solange

    beyonce out !!!

  62. MC October 2, 2012

She is talented, but again I am not feeling it today with Solange. The song sound so vintage and retro, which is a plus but still not feeling it today.

  63. Tasha October 2, 2012

It sounds better than put it down!

  64. ,,, October 2, 2012

love the song. and i absolutely love her style, she should be the one designing that tacky ass house of dereon s***.

  65. phillydoinit October 2, 2012

  66. Koodzi October 3, 2012
