In a day where many performers struggle to live up to commercial expectations, it’s safe to say that Young Money’s Drake is one of a few exceptions.
Second only to mentor Lil Wayne with regards to pulling in Hip Hop numbers, the Rapper has now seen his star power secure fellow MC 2Chainz his first single to move over 1 million copies, digitally.
Details below…
Released on May 8th, the Def Jam backed by number has now been certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, for sales of over 1 million copies in the US alone.
What makes its success even more of a surprise, is that it only scored a peak position of #24 on the Billboard Hot 100 upon release, but did hit #1 on both the US Rap Songs and US Hot R&B/ Hip Hop Songs charts, marking one of the highest selling singles of the year.
As of November 11th, the single’s supporting album ‘Based on a T.R.U. Story’ has sold 375,000 units since its arrival on August 14th.

Hip-Hop is not dead, no one said it was dead. All these rappers (good or not) debuting high with 150-200k or like Lil’ Wayne 1 million etc so they sell really well…..its R&B that’s dead. Rap & Hip-Hop like in the 90s is selling really well. Rap/Hip-Hop, Country, Rock, Pop sell where R&B etc doesn’t.

Hip Hop IS DEAD! This new form of “hip hop” is not hip hop. Timbaland and Missy (rap pioneers) in a recent interview spoke on the subject and how everyone has the same beats and arrangements in thier songs, there is no creativity, they all rap about the same things: strippers, money, drugs, material possessions and bitches. That is not hip hop. You must be under 25 and need to go back into your history books to learn what real hip hop is. I don’t even think Jay Z is real hip hop, he’s overrated and married to Beyonce which makes people think he’s more than what he is, lyrically he’s fallen off.
R&B is alive and well, it’s just not as popular as it was in the 90s and even early 2000′s. Artists who sing R&B have not degraded the integrity of the music like these new “rappers” have done to hip hop. Just because trash is selling like hot cakes doesn’t mean it isn’t trash, it’s still trash. You just have people who buy what they are told to buy and what they are told is “cool” for right now. Hip Hop is dead.

Its true that people under 25 tend to have weak taste in music but you can’t apply that to every person, and certainly not me. My comment had nothing to do with “Real Hip-Hop”, it had everything to do with Hip-Hop of today selling. Its true that true Hip-Hop has died along with the legends and those who shaped it and we are now left with bullshit that is confused as “real music/real Hip-Hop” however, you can say the same for real R&B, Pop, Country, etc….ALL of these genres experienced “death” of its true form and instead replaced with shells of its past form. No one makes R&B like the 90s (Brandy, Monica, Toni, DC, TLC, etc) or pop (Mariah Carey, Celine, Whitney, etc), Country (Bonnie R, Dolly p, etc….), etc……all of these genres are replaced with Trey Songz, Rihanna, Ke$ha, Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, etc……
