Epic: Adele’s ’21’ Sells 10 Million Units In The US

Published: Wednesday 28th Nov 2012 by David

‘Rumor Has It’. ‘Love Song’. ‘Rolling In The Deep’.

The above three serve as one of the many reasons Brit gem Adele became one of the highest selling entertainers in chart history last year, with the release of her sophomore set ‘21′.

Now, in what will leave quite a few Pop damsels in commercial distress, the project has now hit sales of 10 million units…in the US alone.

Good news below…

With 28,000 copies sold in the last week, the LP’s combined US sales sit pretty at 10,020,000 copies sold, and is one of only eight albums to sell this many units, after spending 24 weeks atop the Billboard 200.

Billboard explains:

“21” is one of only eight albums to hit the 10 million mark within two years of release (104 weeks). In addition to “21,” “No Strings Attached” and “Millennium,” Santana’s “Supernatural” (60 weeks to 10 million), Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill” (66), “The Bodyguard” soundtrack (72), Creed’s “Human Clay” (93) and Shania Twain’s “Come On Over” (96) all raced to the figure in under two years.

“21” shifted another 28,000 in the past week, bringing its to-date sum to 10,020,000. “21” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and spent 24 non-consecutive weeks atop the tally — the most in the SoundScan era. It hasn’t left the chart since, earning 80 weeks in the top 10. This week, the set moves 31-35.

“21” is the third album to cross the 10 million mark this year, following Linkin Park’s “Hybrid Theory” and Usher’s “Confessions.” However, those sets took much longer to reach 10 million. Linkin Park’s set was released in 2000 while Usher’s effort bowed in 2004. (Next in line to hit 10 million is likely Pearl Jam’s “Ten,” which has sold 9.98 million so far.)”

the first and probably last diamond album of the 2010s decade. Congrats Adele!

    • Beydoll November 28, 2012

Bye RIP Rihanna, Mariah and Lady GaGa 🙁

      • WHO FCKIN CARES REALLY? November 28, 2012

10 million…it is all about longevity.
She is the flava of the year…just like Gaga !!!!

      • theman November 28, 2012

Exclude, Mariah she has three diamond albums, she’s in a class by herself. Quit the games.

  2. Jahlal November 28, 2012

she could’ve done more if she toured and promoted this album!!

    • Mario November 28, 2012

      That so true!

    • WHOOOO! December 4, 2012

yeah but she had that surgery on hr voice (which I think made her voice sound better) and she had her baby i think that if neither of these happened she would still be touring recording an album and 21 would probably sold like 15 mill

  3. I mop the floor with your faves weave November 28, 2012

Only Rita Ora can do better than this. R**** and Bey combined could NEVER.

    • mr.m November 28, 2012

      You’re funny LOL!
Rita? okay .. at least you made me laugh 😉

      • Mario November 28, 2012

Out of everyone you could pick you picked Rita..Child please I like her but that straight stupidty.

  4. Jamil November 28, 2012

I’m really confused what is so special about her music. I felt like her album was the same song sung in the same tone and it all it did was make me sad. Can someone please explisn to me why you liked this album.

    • ABCD November 28, 2012

OMG, I THIUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE!! LOL

      • theman November 28, 2012

She has a great voice, music, and is a real legit artist. Her songs do not sound the same. “Rolling In The Deep” sounds nothing like “Someone Like You” nor does “Set Fir e To The Rain”.

    • NOBITCHASSNESS November 28, 2012

You’ll have your “Adele moment” soon lol. We all have.

      • Mario November 28, 2012

Jamil what makes Adele so special is the fact that her music was not like everything that was out.Yes i get the same song one tone thing you were saying but Adele does soul pop and was successful when other artist was doing european influnced music. So she came in like breath of fresh air and her voice was the only thing she needed and not gimmicks that other artist used.

      • ABCD November 28, 2012

@ MARIO YU SOUND LIKE A JACKASS THERE WERE PLENTY ARTISTS OUT THAT WERE SINGING ABOUT HEARTBREAK!!

      • ABCD November 28, 2012

There were Many other Artists making PURE SOUL BLUES MUSIC EVEN BEFORE AND WHEN ADELE CAME OUT YU DUMB JACK ASS!! YU JUS PAID ATTENTION TO ADELES MUSIC SO DONT MAKE IT SEEM AS IF SHE WAS THE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR WHO WAS DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT!! HOW ABOUT STILL STANDING BY MONICA??? THAT ALBUM HELPED PERSONS GET THROUGH TOUGH TIMES!! IT GAVE PEOPLE HOPE IT TOLD PERSONS NOT TO GIVE UP AND THAT YU CAN STAND ON UR OWN TWO FEET EVEN AFTER UR STRUGGLES!! IT WAS AN ALBUM THAT HAD SONGS LIKE MIRROR WHAT ADDRESED SELF ESTEEM, BELIEVEING IN ME WHAT ADRESSED BELIEVING IN UR SELF, STILL STANDING WHAT ENCOURAGED PERSONS TO STAY STRONG!! AS WELL AS ROMANTIC AND RELATIONSHIP SONGSTHAT ALBUM WAS A TRUE DEFINITION OF BREATH OF FRESH AIR THERE WAS NO ALBUM AND YES I SAID IT NO ALBUM LIKE THAT ALBUM WHEN IT CAME OUT!!! WHY WASNT THAT ALBUM RECOGNIZEDD???

      • ABCD November 28, 2012

Don get me wrong Adele is a talented artist however all im saying is SOMETHING IS COMPLETELY OFF!

  5. Jamil November 28, 2012

Hybrid Theory was a far better album.

    • Common Sense November 28, 2012

      Unlike everything they’ve released since…

  6. Key Amino November 28, 2012

Congrats Adele 🙂 I have to be honest though, I didn’t like any of your music, but it’s obvious that there are people out there that do. Getcha Money.

  7. MC November 28, 2012

We all saw it coming, but congrats to Adele nonetheless. This is a rare thing to happen (1st one since Usher’s “Confessions”) in this new millennium.

  8. Jay Jay November 28, 2012

Congrats!!! I still haven’t bought it yet lol

  9. rihnavy777 November 28, 2012

Rihanna’s album unapologetic shits on this album, its wayyyyyyyy better than the this f*** of an album 21, i dont get why the hell is it so successful, its so lame. In fact rihanna’s entire album catalogue shits on adeles catalogue.

All of adele’s song are boring and redundant, she’s just like a norah jones, hot now, but she will NEVER repeat the same “success” with this s*** of an album, i still scratch my head to this day.

RiRi for life bitcheds, and i dont give a damn if u think otherwise halla

    • mr.m November 28, 2012

Rihanna’s 7 albums together <<<< Rolling in the deep
      bye

      • Absolved November 28, 2012

Unapologetic won’t even sell 1/3 of what 21 did and you know this. In fact, the sales of 21 alone damn near wipes out the sales of Rihanna’s entire discography. LOL

        Have a seat, little one.

      • Mario November 28, 2012

That is so true.Don’t hate cause your fave will never see the delight of a Diamond album.

    • kim November 28, 2012

sheet i was just thinking she puts me in the mind of norah, both overated

  10. King Bey + Queen Adele November 28, 2012

As much as I love and respect Adele, I think ’21’ is an overrated album. ’19’ was her best album and one of the very best albums of all time, IMO, not ’21’.

Anyway, congrats to Queen Adele for earning a Diamond album. I am very happy for her!

    • Mario November 28, 2012

      19 was really good too.

    • Common Sense November 28, 2012

19 was flawless it simply lacked the commercial hook that 21 had in spades.

  11. Christina Aguilera November 28, 2012

Remember Norah Jones, Enya etc? Yeah, neither do I. Adele is next. She will never have the longevity that I have. And you f*** will deal!

LOTUS- collecting dust at a media outlet near you!

    • mr.m November 28, 2012

      YAAAAAAAS! LOTUS 😀
I kinda agree with what you’ve said
But adele will still have the longevity I guess
She will not be as successful as she is now OF COURSE!
but she’ll still be remembered coz she’s mainstream!
Her songs smashed .. not just the album
Norah, Enya or whatever were NEVER mainstream
Adele is .. as for now
So, her image and songs will remain remembered ..
      Anyway, she’s OVER’f******’Rated

      • theman November 28, 2012

Enya still sales very well when she releases music. Adele’s first album is still charting, so sit down with that bullshyt.

    • MRDIVABITCH November 28, 2012

Enya outsells Christina, so you will sit the f*** down and deal, b****.

  12. BIG DOGG November 28, 2012

    ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

    GRATS SLAYDELE 😥

  13. NOBITCHASSNESS November 28, 2012

    19 & 21 are GREAT albums.

This just may be the last album to go Diamond for a while!

  14. ABCD November 28, 2012

I DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT IS SOOO GREAT AND SPECIAL ABOUT HER!! THERE ARE OTHER BLUES/ SOUL SINGERS THAT SING WAAAAAAY BETTER AND MAKE BETTER MUSIC!! ADELE’S VOICE IS NOT EVEN STRONG!! I GUESS PEOPLE JUST LOVE TO FOLLOW THE CROWD!! CUZ IF ADELE IS GETTING THIS MUCH SUCCESS AND RECOGNITION WHY ARENT THE OTHER SOUL SINGERS THAT SING WAAAY BETTER SUCH AS MONICA, BRANDY, JILL SCOTT, and ELLE VARNER GETTING THE SAME THING??? SOMETHING IS COMPLETELY VERY VERY OFF!! THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS SOOOOO POLITICAL, IT IS OBVIOUSS!!! THIS INDUSTRY IS TOOOOOOOO BIASED, ITS SICKENING!!!! IF SHE TAKING HIM SIX GRAMMIES!! WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OTHER TALENTED SOUL SINGERS LIKE I SAIDD THAT SING WAYY BETTER!! SOMETHING IS OFF!!!

    • mr.m November 28, 2012

      SPEAK!

      • Mario November 28, 2012

What made Adele 21 a success is because of her target market. Her market is the contempatory market. This section of the market actually buys albums that is way.Monica has been singing the same 8 notes on her last couple of albums,Brandy does r&b music and that has lost its musial stronghold that it had in the 90’s and Elle Varner is good but she does not have the support behind her that she needs to succeed.Adele found the right market and was still doing pop soul that draw in some of the itunes generation which alllowed to have 3 #1 hits.

    • wrinkle flop ora November 28, 2012

Elle Varnver, Brandy and Jill scott can NOT WRITE THE TYPE OF SONGS ADELE DOES. End it now. Adele sells because the art in her lyrics. I have never heard Elle, Jill or Brandy write a thought provoking song. Adele is not about the singing. Her lyrics are powerful.

      • wrinkle flop ora November 28, 2012

Do not even compare Adele to wack Brandy, Jill scott or Elle varneR. Adele is on the artistic level of Dido, Norah jones, Alanis morrisette, Sade and Amy winehouse.

There is nothing artistic in Elle Varner or brandy’s music.

      • ABCD November 28, 2012

Yu DUMB ASSS H***, BRANDY AND JILL SCOTT HAS HAC LYRICS ABOUT THE SAME TOPICS AS ADELE’S LYRICS SP THERE IS NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT ADELES LYRICS!! IF HER LYRICS IS SOO ARTISTIC SO IS JILL SCOTT SND BRANDYS LYRICS!!!L. * SINGS HAVE YOU EVER BY BRANDY*. BYE HOESSS!!!!!!

      • ABCD November 28, 2012

*SINGS REFILL BY ELLE VARNER* LET ME GUESS , YOUR SAYING ADELE IS ON THE LEVEL OF THESE ARTISTS YU LISTED BECAUSE SHE ISWHITE RITE??????

    • ABCD November 28, 2012

OK DUMBASSES, IM TALKING ABOUT SINGING TALENT, AT THE END OF THE DAY MARKET AND POPULARITY SHOULD NOT DETERMINE RECOGNITION, TALENT SHOULD HENCE THE WHOLE MARKET THING IS IRRELEVANT!! TALENT SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED!! PURE TALENT NOT POPULARITY OR A SPECIFIC AUDIENCE!! YOU GUYS JUST PROVED WHAT I SAID TO BE TRUE!! IT IS ALL POLITICS!! AT THE END OF THE DAY BRANDY MONICA JILL SCOTT AND ELLE ALL SINGS SONGS ABOUT HEARTBREAK SO WHAT THE F*** DOES ADELES WRITING SKILLS HAVE TO DO WITH THIS!! THIS JUST SHOWS THAT THE RECOGNITION IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS NOT BASED OFF OF TALENT BUT POLITICS, POPULARITY AND IMAGE!!! WHAT HAPPENED TO TALENT BEING THE DETERMINING FACTOR!!!!! ITS ALL BIASNESS, AND POLITICS THAT DETERMINE THE RECOGNITION IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY NOT TALENT!! YU PROVED WHAT I SAID TO BE TRUE DUMB ASS H***!!!!!! THEREFORE THE RECOGNITION IS NOT ACCURATE IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY!! BIASNESS AND POLITICS IS WHAT ITS ABOUT!! AT THE END OF THE DAY ADELE SINGS THE SAME BORING ASS WEAK WAY,, ABOUT THE SAME BORING ASS REDUNDANT THINGS! SO DONT DARE COME AT MONICA BUT SHE SINGS THE SAME EIGHT NOTES!! YOU SOUND LIKE A REALL JACK ASSSS!!! MONICAS RANGE IS VERY INTERESTING AND I DO NOT FIND HER VOCALS TO REDUNDANT ! HER VOICE HAS CONTINOUSLY MATURED THROUGH ALL HER YEARS IN THIS INDUSTRY THAT IS OBVIOUS!!!!! ADELE ON THE OTHER HAND DOES THE SAME WEAK ASS, SINGING!!!! BORING, PALE SINGING!!! YAULL H*** SIT YUR ASSES DOWN!! CUZ WHAT I AM SAYING IS TRUE!! TALENT IS SUPOSED TO BE THE DETERMING FACTOR, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO RECOGNITION NOT NO DAMN SPECIFIC AUDIENCE!,,

  15. ABCD November 28, 2012

    But CONGRATS to ADELE!!

  16. Beyonce’s Weave November 28, 2012

    Congrats Adele.

  17. J November 28, 2012

never listened to the album but congrats anyway girl! She seems like a down to Earth, nice person.

  18. Monstarebel (THE UNAPOLOGETIC PRINCE) November 28, 2012

    ADELE=QUEEN……

  19. mr.m November 28, 2012

As much as I know she’s talented and a good song writer ..
I enjoy her music .. etc BUT shall I say this?
” THE MOST OVERRATED ARTIST OF ALL TIME “

    • John November 28, 2012

      That title goes to Beyonce

    • Common Sense November 28, 2012

Oprah is calling Justin Beiber the next MJ I think that earns him the title of “Most Overrated Artist of All Time.”

  20. My forehead tho November 28, 2012

    And this shocks absolutely no-one.

I thought she already passed 10 millions though…

    • hk November 28, 2012

I like Rihanna though, but someone should send her that picture on twitter! loooooool……YOU’RE GOING TO HELL!

  21. Mario November 28, 2012

Oh and this longeivty question Adele had the best selling album for two years in a row in the US(the world’s biggest music market).

  22. speechless November 28, 2012

    So yall mad huh?

  23. Nichole November 28, 2012

I think she’ll end up like Norah and Susan Boyle to be honest. Congrats are in order, however, 21 is not a good album in my opinion.

    • MC November 28, 2012

      19 is better tbh.

  24. CzarM November 28, 2012

Adele was marketed to a very broad audience. Everyone from teenagers to senior citizens to pop fans to confused R&B fans bought into her s***; after a while it buying that album just became the “thing” to do (I bet half of the people who bought 21 never bothered to listen to it.) That’s why she saw these numbers. The industry manipulated people into thinking that she was some kind of “real deal” breath of fresh air and that 21 was a “must-buy.”

Personally, I can’t stand Adele’s music. I find that brand of “hipster soul” she does to be tedious as hell to sit through, and I don’t like her dry, howling voice. However…I DO appreciate that she isn’t dance/electropop AND that she derailed Gaga’s plot to take 2011 hostage…but aside from those little arbitrary things, I have zero use for her as an artist.

The truth is that Adele really was just in the right place at the right time. Normally artists like her go unnoticed and fail to make a commercial dent, but every few years the industry looks for some frumpy, dumpy, unglamorous “serious” female singer to play Cinderella with, and showers them with critical acclaim and mass marketing/promotion, just to atone for doing the same thing in reverse with shallow idiots like Gaga/Katy/Rihanna/Kesha the year or so before. Adele is basically damage control.

    • kingcere November 28, 2012

Everyone can have an opinion so if u don’t Adele’s music that’s find but to go as to say oh she was at the right place at the rite time that’s b******* cuz her 1st album was critical acclaim as well n she won 2 grammys for its..so she wasn;t no damn “it” girl for the moment!!

    • Common Sense November 28, 2012

“Hipster Soul” Lol I can’t even. She makes contemporary pop. Yes it’s hard to imagine music without the ridiculous amounts of overproduction these days, but it still exists.

  25. MRDIVABITCH November 28, 2012

    FAT B****

    • Mario November 28, 2012

And her pockets are fatter than yours to!

      • MRDIVABITCH November 28, 2012

No boo, I’m a trust fund baby. Yew mad?

      • rich86 November 29, 2012

dont mind him,he wished he had a trust fund, primohomme stop coming on the web and making such an ass clown of yourself sweetie,muah:-)

  26. Mark November 28, 2012

10 million in the US alone! 2 number ones, record of the year, album of the year. And she wrote her song AND her single and albums are selling, CASH!!!!! Makes me wonder why Usher and Beyonce went pop when their highest selling albums are R&B albums.

    • mob November 28, 2012

I think there is a great deal of finagling that goes on behind the scenes in the music industry. I keep telling folks, the POWERS THAT BE didctates more than ppl want to believe!

  27. Benron (Shine Bright Like Rihanna’s 100 million records sold plaque) November 28, 2012

21 is mediocre, she just complains about how she was dumped and draws vague comparisons to random things like “rolling in the deep”, “set fire to the rain”, “turntables” and the rest of that mediocrity. There is no range of different types of music on this album, all the same. She is not a skilled songwriter or singer, all this media hype is unneccesary, she is nothing special, not even a personality and has been using her weight for her advantage for a long time. “OH BLAH BLAH BLAH People hate me cuz Im fat, No one likes me cuz Im fat, I make real music cuz Im fat and this somehow means its ok for me to blatantly admit I’m a terrible visual artist.” Ugh.

Go buy unapologetic for R&B, Pop, Hip Hop, country inspired, Rock inspired and many more typed of tracks with great production and a unique voice on it.

    • John November 28, 2012

Says the dumb ass who stans for someone with 1.0 octave range

      • Benron (Shine Bright Like Rihanna’s 100 million records sold plaque) November 28, 2012

        2.5 octave range. Buy unapologetic.

    • kingcere November 28, 2012

this the dumbest s*** i think i ever read on this website!! 21 is a better album combine with all of rihanna albums who gives a f*** with it have different genre inspired!! adele is soul/pop artist n her music have soul n depth..not no suck my cockiness n lick my p**** type music..we get it that rihanna have money !! people love Adele’s music cuz they can relate to what she’s saying!! not come here rudeboy can u get it up!!

    • Shymir06 November 28, 2012

Benron nothing your f***** ass says matters and nobody takes you at all seriously.

      • kingcere November 28, 2012

        correct

    • Mario November 28, 2012

Benron called Adele medicore but he stans for Rihanna,Boy stop it…You have me LMFAO!

      • Benron (Shine Bright Like Rihanna’s 100 million records sold plaque) November 28, 2012

Go get luigi and phuck off.

    • Common Sense November 28, 2012

OMFG I’m dying!!! 21 Mediocre then telling people to buy that piece of s*** UnaFLOPagetic? You couldn’t pay me to waste the broadband or hard drive space to download that s*** for free much less pay for it.
      21>Rihanna entire catalogue
      19+21>Rihanna’s career.

  28. sammi November 28, 2012

I may be in the minority on this but I think Adele is just a bunch of hype. Her music is somber and heartbreaking and it all sounds the same to me, breakup music. I liked whats she has produced so far but I dont see how this album was moving the numbers that it was. It was selling like one million copies a week last yr lol. She’s all hype to me, Im over the Adele thing.

  29. mob November 28, 2012

Wow, congrats Adele. I like some songs on ’21’. The POWERS THAT BE have really set her up well! Good for her.

I miss CREED! Also, I miss Shania Twain……that cheapm lesser, non-talented banjo player must go! 🙂

  30. ceaton85 November 28, 2012

it is so sad that the people who comment waste time trying to shade Queen Adele while her album has moved 10 Million units in less than two years, meanwhile where is the post about The Reup being a RE-FLOP and dismally selling less than 35,000 copies and debuting at a dismal 28…. Adele continues to remain bigger and better than your faves.

  31. theman November 28, 2012

Lol at all of the flop stans of other artists complaining. Her album is amazing. Adele not only has a great voice, but she is a genuine artist. She isn’t contrived.

  32. Belladonna November 28, 2012

(21)is One of the best albums ever made like (The Bodyguard) and this is way why I was going to buy Rihanna’s new album but didn’t at the last min. Lol Because I want to be able to listen to the albums I buy forever or at lest no you worked really hard to make it and but time in care in to it. I like Rihanna and I wanted to buy her new album but I just couldn’t do it. I think how she act’s is cute on twitter but I don’t want it in my real life.

    • MC November 28, 2012

You are beyond delusional, even 19 was better than 21 let alone being one of “the best albums ever made”…….? Yes, its successful but success =/= best album ever….

      • Common Sense November 28, 2012

He realized that UnaFLOPagetic wasn’t worth buying so he can’t be that delusional. In my opinion 21 is a great way to introduce people to Adele. 19 Isn’t as easy as 21 to get into but worth the time.
