Eve Dishes On Female Rap, New Album, & Interracial Relationships

Published: Friday 30th Nov 2012 by Sam

Eve‘s new album may be called ‘Lip Lock’, but the femcee unlocked a whole lot of info during her visit to The Angie Martinez Show on Hot 97 this week.

Now residing here in London town, the self-proclaimed “pitbull in a skirt” spoke candidly about her hiatus, the state of female rap, her new album, and dating Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta‘s Stevie J (back in the day). The 34 year old also opened up about her new relationship and what it’s like being in love with a White man (her words, not ours).

The insightful interview awaits after the jump…

While we’re sure the interview provided many a soundbite to debate, we’re just amped for this long over-due album. E-V-E’s features over the last few years reaffirm that she still has “it”, hence we can’t wait to see her return so as to provide some much needed variety on the femcee front.

The ONLY REASON other female rappers can’t make it to the top is because they don’t have the connections nicki have.

They don’t know how to get with who is hot and popping on a record for a feature. They don’t have that strong following that will buy records. They are not co-sign by a popular rapper that’s selling records worldwide.

Most of these female won’t make it cause they just don’t have that one popular rapper for that co-sign or that following of a strong fan base that will buy you’re album in a snow storm they don’t care.

    • IDK November 30, 2012

I kinda feel you on this because most of the female rappers that made it big was brought out or introduced by a BIG TIME rapper. Look @ Foxy, Lil Kim, Nicki, trina I think eve might be an exception even tho she had ruff ryders but I do get what you saying and that is so tru. Too bad the Female rappers that are BIG TIME now wont reach out to the up and trying come female MC’s. But things could change. I hope somebody come’s and do what lil kim did with ladies night. Now that could be the new beginning of something BIG to come for females.

    • Trev November 30, 2012

but ALL big rappers were cosigned by someone at some point…not just female rappers…give me a list of 10 of the most successful rappers and i guarantee i could tell you their cosign

now lets keep it all the way real…at the end of the day it’s about music…Nicki is big because her music is hot….Azealia, Angel Haze & Iggy are coming up now because they’re music is hot

Y’all can hype Eve up if y’all want to but her latest tracks are waaaack…so was Missy’s and Kim’s…which is why it didn’t chart on billboard or itunes…i love Eve & Missy dearly (Kim is wack to me) but if the NEW stuff was hot AT LEAST the hiphop chart would show

      • IDK November 30, 2012

yea, I completely agree with you except the wack part lol, but Nicki’s audience is much broader than Eve’s and Missy’s music if you really think about it. Because if you compare their style of music……………………. ….. you really cant because they’re all different . All I’m saying is I want the female MC’s to WIN and they wont be able to do that unless they work together. The fellas do it all the time and half of them secretly cant stand each other.

      • Trev November 30, 2012

you may have a point there with the “working together” thing…i think the younger girls will be fine…but Eve, Missy, Shawnna, etc def need to work together

i want to see female MC’s win too…no matter what I’m gonna buy any female rappers stuff unless it’s DEAD wack ie. Kim…i bought Kreayshawn’s even though that flopped beyond belief i loved it…and i will buy Eve’s album…these new chicks are dope though

      • AmbeRussell November 30, 2012

      • IDK December 1, 2012

    • FAF November 30, 2012

      @Nahjee they’ve already done that

In the span of their legacy

      it’s just NICKI’s time NOW …

and she has made endorsements that will be ongoing

she has her OWN label, perfume, ec .

  2. Steph November 30, 2012

Awesome interview! Can’t wait EVE! April 2013!!!!

    • FAF November 30, 2012

No shade, do you honesly believe that ? Eve has been “about to come out” since ’07 =/

    • AmbeRussell November 30, 2012

she should do a scripted tv show of her life, a former rapper dating a white guy and going back into the music. and she could “record” her stuff on her show and stuff and make it seem like she is actually doing a behind the scenes reality show, but it’s all acting

“They don’t have that strong following that will buy records.”

…and Nicki does? The re-release of her album gave it a 500-something% sales increase to a mere 36k…which begs, how much (or rather how little) was she selling the week before?

If your career has to be qualified by stunts and co-signed by hot guest stars on your record, then you’re time is ticking. What are you gonna, ALWAYS put out songs with other hot rappers? Does every song on your album have to have high profile guest?

Salt-N-Pepa and Lauryn Hill remain the biggest selling female rappers of all time…and I can’t recall a single song they put out that featured another hot rapper. It was all them, just about all the time…and if they did have a feature, it was some no-name or up and comer who they were extending a branch to.

The bottom line is that stunts and gimmicks and tricks and manipulations are what you call “short money.” They only work for the time being, it gets old quick — and doesn’t keep the public riveted for the long haul.

The problem with artists today is that they can’t stand on their own two feet and build a name for themselves. They have to come on the scene as part of some clique or as someone’s cheap protege. Then when the popularity of said click, or said star who they came out with, starts to dwindle their careers die right along with it.

I think it’s pretty safe to say that when Wayne/Drake/Cash Money cools down, Nicki is done. That is if she doesn’t play out sooner.

    • Trev November 30, 2012

      1. you can’t compare album sales that are like 20 years apart
      2. Collaborating is more popular now then it was 15-25 years ago
      3. The album is 7 months old of course it’s not going to be selling 100,000 every week
      4. The ReUp was a re-release and was the best selling re-release in a very long time
      5. How is nicki done when she has 4 songs on Billboard Hot 100? #13 #21 #22 #88

      • IDK November 30, 2012

        right!

    • Britbutnotproud November 30, 2012

Your response is well articulated I couldn’t have put it better myself.

      • IDK November 30, 2012

right! we need more TRU music lovers like yal to comment more often! Being able to hold a well articulated educated conversation on here. All of the Shady/F***** or hater stans are getting out of control. You cant even hold a decent conversation with them without them being so strongly vigorously bias towards you. Like seriously? All I said was I hope they go platinum and you calling me all types of b****** and s***? Whatever happen to agreeing with a response or disagreeing with a response. Smh! crazy.

      • Trev November 30, 2012

oh stfu you stank c***, your fave is a flop and is working at Kmart *me mocking them* lol…but yea they don’t know anything other than vulgar insults…but i love this site, besides them hating on Rihanna for no reason…but the hate is lessening slowly but surely

      • AmbeRussell December 1, 2012

@FAF i guess u didnt get the fact that nicki multiple feat. she was on prior to becoming famous and even releasing her 1st single, which didnt appear on her album. and the countless feat. she had on her album as wellen vogue is not a group group, which the comment stated, rappers. at lease say kim with ladies night and all her songs with big, lauren hill being apart of the fugees. but ur examples did not help with your case, since lady marmalade came out yrs after kim 1st came out onto the scene so…

You old die hard Hip-Hop fans have it all twisted. JUST ABOUT EVERY ARTIST OF EVERY GENRE WAS SELLING millions of albums years ago. You want to know why? It is because ITUNES AND AMAZON.COM DIDN’T EXIST!!!!!! If you liked a single, YOU HAD TO BUY THE ALBUM! Nicki has had hits like Right Thru Me, Your Love, Starships, Va Va Voom, Superbass, without any features or any features of a hot rapper.

  4. That B*tch (redbone) November 30, 2012

Azelia Banks & Eve are two smart ladies.
Go for the white men honey! They dont return to violent black men that beat them to a pulp.
I wish she wasn’t so far in London though. I wanna hear some new music Eve.

    • Vandrea November 30, 2012

Don’t put words in Eve’s mouth. She said that while she’s with a white man right now, she hasn’t sworn off black men for the future.

  5. Edubb November 30, 2012

Eve you are severely IRRELEVANT. Buh bye!

    • Vandrea November 30, 2012

    E.V.E

  13. courageous November 30, 2012

lol at someone saying salt and pepa was the biggest selling female acts in female hip hop.
So Lauryn Hill didn’t start with fugees and wyclef.

Where do you find these stats

Some of you know so much but don’t know s***.

Anyway if Nicki chooses to work with these hip hop mc it’s a lose lose for her. People are waiting to see her demise. They will go crazy saying they killed her on a track true or not. The female can build off of her momentum. What does Nicki get from it. None of these females helped her so why should she help them?

  14. lola December 2, 2012

Eve needs to give it up. Female Hip-Hop rappers are done and over with. Nicki Minaj is urban crossover and that is why she was able to make it. That whole “Nicki is Pop and has no substance” needs to stop. She gets on my damn nerves, but at least she was able to understand the music industry and become a mainstream star. If you’re not Pop, you have no career! Adele did soul/rock, but because she’s European, has a big voice, and sung many ballads, it crossed over to Pop music and many people of different ages supported her. Eve should focus on getting married and having children or maybe writing for others. And for her ghetto, ugly, m***** ass to get a white man…. he must be ghetto himself.
