Album Review (With A Twist): Rihanna – ‘Unapologetic’

Rihanna Unapolagetic5 Album Review (With A Twist): Rihanna Unapologetic

Seven years. Seven albums. And seven million opinions. Rihanna has undoubtedly become one of Pop’s most pronounced polarizers.  Indeed, in an industry which sees tastes and consumption pattens change with the wind, some cultural commentators see the star’s candy-coloured wigs and annual albums as the blueprint for commercial survival. For others, her quantity over quality approach is the root cause of everything wrong with the once flourishing music business.

Whatever one’s take on the Bajan bombshell, the fact is…you have one; an ethos the 24 year old is all-too-aware of on her latest opus ‘Unapologetic’.

A flagrant courter of controversy, the album ironically takes aim with the tabloid flames she and her team ignited to burn her name into mass consciousness. Smartly, though, such themes are merely a light undercoat to an otherwise “business as usual” Rihanna LP. Catchy hooks, stellar production, and questionable vocals characterise much of the record; again, polarizing opinion. For, while some love her for this, it’s these exact traits that certain sects loathe.

Alas, in tipping our hats to the Roc Nation star’s status as That Grape Juice’s most-talked-about act, we want to hear YOUR review of ‘Unapologetic’! Did she deliver? Did she disappoint? Sound off below!

That Grape Juice’s Favourite ‘Unapologetic’ Tracks:

* Nobody’s Business (ft. Chris Brown)

* No Love Allowed

* Stay

* Jump

That Grape Juice’s Least Favourite ‘Unapologetic’ Tracks:

* Fresh Off The Runway

* Numb (ft. Eminem)

*Right Now (ft. David Guetta)

That Grape Juice Rating: 3/5

Conclusive: Album boasts strong moments, yet is plagued by disturbing and heavy portions of filler.

      • “I don’t wanna give you the wrong impression/ I need love and affection,” Rihanna and guest rapper Future insist on ‘Loveeeeeee Song’. It’s one of many ballads on her latest album that tap into somewhere deeper than your average slowie because of the circumstances surrounding her and Chris Brown which, whether she likes it or not, are felt throughout Unapologetic.

      • Another is the set’s lead single ‘Diamonds’, a Sia-penned serenade about beautiful-but-ultimately-doomed love that could easily be attributed to her on-off ex, even if she did dedicate the song to her recently-deceased grandma Dolly.

      • The same goes for “Stay”, the LP’s most
Underproduced track that includes the lyric: “Not really sure how to feel about it/ Something in the way you move makes me feel like I can’t live without you” – a line that sounds even more poignant when offset by Mikky Ekko’s angelic vocal.

      • Then there’s the duet with the man himself on ‘Nobody’s Business’, an uptempo R&B-funk number which finds Brown doing his best Michael Jackson impression (who shares a co-write here) and, cleverly, serves as one of the album’s standouts. Its playfulness is short lived though, if the seven-minute confession ‘Love Without Tragedy’/'Mother Mary’ – which curiously shares the same producers – is anything to go by.

      • Elsewhere, there’s a sense of last-minute record label box-ticking. The Chase & Status-helmed wobble on the chorus of ‘Jump’ and a dancefloor-friendly bounce courtesy of David Guetta on ‘Right Now’ are somewhat safe options; but there’s plenty elsewhere (including closers ‘No Love Allowed’ and Labrinth-produced ‘Lost in Paradise’)
That proves why, Eight years and seven Albums, RIHANNA is still the Biggest Popstar on the Planet!!!

Comparing the collaboration to working with Meryl Streep or Robert De Niro in film, Warren marveled at how natural it felt to work with Beyoncé. “Some people come in my studio and I’m like, ‘Oh God,’ and you’ve got to fix them up and it’s just hard,” she said. “Some of the people that get deals, you just can’t understand. But then when you work with a Beyoncé or so sadly Whitney [Houston]. . . it’s so beautiful.”

Warren – who counts Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” Celine Dion’s “Because You Love Me,” Toni Braxton’s “Un-Break My Heart,” and Starship’s “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” among her songwriting credits – has also been working with Dion, Kylie Minogue, John Legend, Emeli Sande and former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland, among others, and has written a song that’s “probably going to be Aerosmith’s single.”

I listened to the whole album (standard version) and needless to say, it was not “it” for me. Remember this is MY perception of the album after listening to it.

    1. Phresh off the runway:…………? Do I really need to say anything……….this was ratchet, hood, ghetto, filled with auto-tune from top to bottom. [1/5]

    2. Diamonds: I didn’t like it in the beginning (still not a big fan) but after listening to the whole album…..I must say its one of the standouts…….[3/5]

    3. Numb: This song takes the cake for the most repetitive Rihanna song (more repetitive that WFL). Slim Shady’s 30seconds rap couldn’t save it. It was one of the more boring tracks on the album…..she basically sang “I’m going numb” almost the whole time. [2.5/5]

    4. Pour it up: This song is Rihanna’s second attempt at raping (first being Phresh off the runway) and needless to say it was horrible……….? Again, this is a ratchet, hood, auto-tuned shit. [1/5]

    5. Loveeeeee song: This song was okay…..I liked Rihanna’s version, but that guy Future ruined it. I cannot get over his auto-tuned filled version of the song. [3/5]

    6. Jump: Originally I thought this song was going to be good, and it was but it turned out to be a little generic that I expected……after listening to tracks 1-5, it was a miracle that I found a song that I was cool with. [3.5/5]

    7. Right now: It was an okay song too, I mean I liked the chorus but it was generic song. [3/5]

    8. What now: This song is one of the best tracks on this album, I thought it was good. [4/5]

    9. Stay: Another great song on this album, I liked everything about this song, so yay! [4.5/5]

    10. Nobody’s Business: I liked the chorus of the song but I felt Rihanna was trying too hard to sound hood and ghetto on this track and the amount of auto-tune was just killing it off for me. [3/5]

    11. Love without tragedy/ Mother Mary: This song had to be the most disappointing for me. I thought fro the snippet and title that I would love this song, but I was disappointed. This song was almost 7 mins long and the first half was great but by the time the second half was happening, I was getting bored. (I need to re-listen to this song though…..maybe I misjudged it) —- No ranking….second listen is needed.
    ______________________________________________
UPDATE: A couple of listens later, this song was indeed really good but I misjudged it. My favorite part is the first 2 mins. and the ending. [4.5/5]
    ____________________________________________

    12. Get it over with: I was bored listening to this song. Rihanna was singing in a lower octave range and I found it hard to pay attention to the lyrics and song. [2/5]

    13. No love allowed: YES! One of the best song on the album. I was enticed and happy through the song. [5/5] ==== Man down anyone?

    14. Lost in paradise: Great song, absolutely enjoyed it. [4.5/5]

So overall from my initial reaction to my very first listening to Unapologetic….I must say I was disappointed for the most part….I will re-listen to it over the weekend for another try but…….no…….. I rank this album [2.5-3/5]

Standout: No love allowed, Lost in paradise, Stay, Love without tragedy/Mother Mary and What now.

Weakest tracks: Pour it up, Phresh off the runway, Numb, and Get it over with.

    • OMG … this is almost EXACTLY how I felt about the album. Pour It Up and Presh does sound ratchet and basic! I’m not conecting with Diamond either and tbh, Future is the one that ruins Loveee Song for me as well.

I like Get It Over With, you should give that another try. Jump sounds so much like an Aaliyah song.
IMO, Birthday Cake >>>>> Nobody’s Business.
Totally agree, We both think Paradise and No Love Allowed are winners! :)

    Unappologetic re-affirms Rihanna’s r&b roots
prooves she isnt just merely a pop star with excellent vocals lush production

The Thing However that is the issue with most critics is not the quality of the album but rather the message she sends on songs such as Love Without Tragedy Stay and Nobodies Business

They Loath\ her relationship with Chris and this album with 3/4 albums is about the relationship

as MTV best said depending on how you feel about Rihanna’s personal life that is how you will feel about Unapologetic.

    Score 4.5/5

she lost point 5 for Numb ….

Stand Outs : What Now, Diamonds, Loveeeeee Song, Pour It Up and Lost In Paradise

FUCK MTV & THE WHITE RACIST MEDIA ALONG WITH THE femiNAZI’S who believe they have a right to hold 19-yr-old Chris Brownand 20-yr-old Rihanna Fenty hostage for the rest of their lives because of 1 unfortunate altercation they had as YOUNG PEOPLE!

TGJ is very biased towards Rihanna and I wouldn’t be surprised if she got a low review from them but give their support to Ciara (Her first single I love but she sounds really pitchy and her second was straight up trash. Her production sounded cheap and like an amateur artist. Needs to step up.. Again MY opinion)

Rita ORA is not gonna catch her now. She is 7 year deep into a mega growing career that has blown taylor, gaga, beyonce, katy etc out the water. Rita Ora is a flop, with no hits and she thinks she can take on Rihanna? Rita could not even beat Rihanna during GIL – unfaithful and SOS wre way bigger then any of her 10 flop singles. Rih does not even need heavy promo to sell. Too late Beyonce. You should of tried to take Rih out the game in 2006. Now……Beyonce, you have to beg Rih for a collabo, to help sell your 5th album which will FLOP WORSE THAN XTINA

THE MOST DIVERSE SINGER EVER. MADONNA AND JANET CANNOT DO REAGGE, TRAP, HIP HOP, DUBSTEP ETC. Well done Rihanna. She has managed to incorporate a range of producers. Future produced Loooooooove song. Good move for giving him a chance. Labrinth from the UK co produced a song. Mikky Ekko and some other rock dudes done stay. The dream done the CB duet a departure from his normal sign. SO MUCH hits and genres on this LP. HER BEST YET. THIS CRUSHES CIARA, KEYSHIA AND BRANDY. WHAT BLACK SINGER CAN DO THIS?

  • On paper, Rihanna releasing her seventh album in seven years would suggest a Quantity-over-Quality work ethic that’s bound to wear thin. But on “Unapologetic,” Rihanna proves once again that she can set and often raise the bar for modern pop music.

  • Amping up on urban, dubstep-leaning R&B and scaling back on the often awkward sex jams that populated the second half of 2011′s “Talk That Talk,” “Unapologetic” is Rihanna’s most confident, emotionally resonant work since 2009′s “Rated R.” There’s hard-hitting club songs (“Phresh Out The Runway,” …

“Pour It Up,” the Ginuwine-sampling “Jump”), feel-good dance jams (David Guetta-produced “Right Now,” Chris Brown duet “Nobody’s Business”) and a surprising abundance of heartfelt ballads lead single “Diamonds,”
    “Stay”,,,

featuring Mikky Ekko, the confessional suite “Love Without Tragedy/Mother Mary” and bonus track “Half Of Me”), all of which showcase Rihanna’s voice in ways the listener hasn’t heard before. Like previous Rihanna projects, “Unapologetic” is destined to crank out at least five singles over the next 12 months (or until it’s time for the next album, anyway).

Rihanna can kick back and relax. The pressure is now on beyonce and Rita Ora.

  • This review is fair. I find that this album has more variety on it. I applaud her for not doing things that are expected of her. Rihanna’s known for following trends and this time around she didn’t record songs that were designed to sound like everything currently played on the radio (that would be easily forgotten later). Some moments actually felt authentic (Stay) and certain tracks on the album stand out and have a cool vibe (Jump, No Love Allowed, Get It Over With, Paradise).

My main gripe with Unapologetic is that Rihanna is simply not singing on some of these songs. At times that did take away from the music. The structure is lazy at times (no verses, unfinished songs that seem to have lyrics replaced by a lot of mixing and repeated hooks). This album is one of Rihanna’s more listenable as a whole, but it’s not very consistent. There are songs that had potential to be amazing, intead those were the let downs (Loveeeee Song, Numb and I just hate Fresh off The Runway)!!!

This album has the best of Loud and GGGB and the worst of TTT. It’s an odd gumbo for me!

    • Rihanna follows trends? Since when?

Served Dance Pop realness in 2006 with “S.O.S” when NOBODY was doing dance music.

Smashed with Stargate and Ne-Yo on “Unfaithful” BEFORE BeYAWNce had “Irreplaceable.”

Worked with The Dream on “Umbrella” before anybody

Smashed with “Only Girl,” one of the earliest EDM hits in the US after David Guetta/Akon’s “Sexy Bitch”

Made Calvin Harris a superstar with “We Found Love”

I don’t see Rihanna following trends, she’s always at the forefront

  • Phresh Out The Runway – “How could you be so hood but you’re so fuckin’ pop? How could you be so fun and sound like you’re selling rocks?” Rihanna quotes one of her doubting peers in this swaggering, gritty club banger produced by The-Dream and David Guetta. “Unapologetic” is all about shaking up expectations, so opening with a straight-up hip-hop track produced by the biggest name in EDM quickly sets the tone.

  • 2 Diamonds,,,
As written by dance-pop torch singer du jour Sia Furler, “Diamonds” finds Rihanna doing one of her throatiest, most impassioned vocals to date (and one that seems to be channeling Sia herself) on this inspirational pop ballad. And as a strategic shift from recent singles like “Talk That Talk” and “Cockiness,” “Diamonds” further positions Rihanna in new stylistic categories, lest she settle on one format for too long.

  • 3. Numb (Featuring Eminem) – The last time Rihanna teamed with Eminem, it was on the massive, emotional “Love The Way You Lie.” This time around, the duo only has the club on its mind on this slow-grinding, Middle Eastern-flavored party track, which opens with Rihanna shrugging, “Ecstasy in the air / I don’t care / Can’t tell me nothin.’”

  • 4. Pour It Up – It’s not just the dudes who can flex their money and love of strippers. Rihanna turns her often-racy Twitter feed into an irresistible, Mike WiLL-produced banger for the ladies, chanting “Pour it up / pour it up / watch it all fall out” over a hypnotic beat and handclaps.Take note, 2 Chainz, Juicy J and the like – Rihanna’s coming after your territory.

  • Silly album, but it doesn’t matter. She’s not a musician. Two decent songs at best. This is the point at which she’s not just selling because of her name, her brand and personal drama. Congrats to her and her team–this is what they always wanted. To sell decently, get the wheels of that 360 deal turning with the minimum amount of effort. This album is that, unlike any of her previous ones which actually had at least two exceptional songs.

Jump – Sure, “Gangnam Style” is the horse-dance craze of 2012, but Ginuwine’s “Pony” has been having quite the cultural renaissance this year, thanks to its key role in the summer blockbuster “Magic Mike” and now this dubstep-ified update from Rihanna. “Jump” is an answer song of sorts to Ginuwine’s 90s classic, adding new verses on top of the existing chorus, which now erupts in a wall-shaking Skrillex-worthy breakdown. “You think I give a damn / but you know who I am / I don’t go around chasing no dude,” Rihanna reassures her conquest.

  • No 1 on itunes. Thats whats wrong with music now. She is still a lazy performer and cant sing or dance. Yippee her handlers picked listenable songs for her to record backing tracks to. This is an attempt at relevance and people will become bored with her without media propping her up

  • Rating: 1.5/5 – This is her WORST album to date, absolutely awful. Navy, call me what you want but I’m an unbiased listener when it comes to Rihanna and this is NOT hot. Very poorly produced with lukewarm single choices to choose from. I thought the songs I might like would be better in its entirtlety…..nope, they got much worse, all 3 of em. Terrible album. I really hope she breaks for awhile cause its just been a downward spiral starting with Talk That Flop…

  • 7. Right Now (Feat. David Guetta) – Perhaps the only song that adheres to the expected formula carved out by “Loud” and “Talk That Talk,” “Right Now” is a straightforward, four-on-the-floor feel-good anthem for the clubs. Thematically identical and musically similar to Ne-Yo and Calvin Harris’ “Let’s Go,” “Right Now” is exactly what you’d expect from the latest Rihanna-Guetta team-up, and nothing more.

  • 8. What Now – An unexpectedly vulnerable ballad from Rihanna that finds her acknowledging “this lump in my throat” before letting loose on an epic chorus that hits harder than anything she’s done in years. An emotional highlight on an album filled with moments of resonance in its second half.

  • 9. Stay (Feat. Mikky Ekko) – As premiered on last week’s “Saturday Night Live,” “Stay” is Rihanna at her most intimate – a piano-backed duet with Brooklyn singer-performance artist Mikky Ekko with a 70s AM-radio melody that recalls Elton John or Billy Joel. If this is Rihanna indulging her adult-contemporary side, she couldn’t have picked a stronger ballad to demonstrate it.

  • 10. Nobody’s Business (Feat. Chris Brown) – If “Nobody’s Business” featured anyone but Chris Brown, it would still be celebrated as a wonderfully catchy throwback to early-90s club music. But because it’s a duet in which the tumultuous lovers proclaim “you’ll always be the one I want to come home to” and “you’ll always be my baby” for the world to hear, it makes the beyond-complicated circumstances of their history impossible to ignore. Judge for yourself — just try to resist the song’s many Michael Jackson-worthy charms.

  • Her vocals have improved, but her material has gotten worse. If only she’d had the same improved voice on Rated R–good songs, but then she lacked the singing ability to really take the entire album to the next level.

All this promo, moreso than for Talk That Talk, it seems, appears to be a desperate attempt by her label to finally land her a #1 album in America. I don’t know if it will work, but good luck to her.

  • 11. Love Without Tragedy / Mother Mary – Coming right after “Nobody’s Business,” it’s hard to think that the first half of this seven-minute two-parter is channeling anyone but Chris Brown when Rihanna sings, “You took the best years of my life / I took the best years of your life / Felt love struck me with a knife / I pray that love don’t strike twice.” But just before things get any more somber, the song takes a confessional shift when the “Mother Mary” part kicks in, with Rihanna softly singing, “Mother Mary / I swear I’m gonna change / Mr. Jesus, I’d love to be a queen / But I’m from the left side of an island / Never thought this many people would even know my name.” A deeply personal song sold by Rihanna’s uplifting vocal.

People have been screaming that Rihanna doesn’t make “real music” and others have been saying she doesn’t make enough urban and R&B music WELL BITCHES she served you the exact album you wanted. There’s only one dance song on the album “Right Now” so I will stay clocking all the devastated and flattened Rihanna haters. She gives you an album filled with piano ballads and it’s “boring” and “filler” when a year ago you said she needs to take a page from Adele and focus on piano ballads. So because someone has an opinion about not liking an album or a song and they have a right to do so it’s a misconception?? Uhhh no. Doesn’t work like that. It’s still an opinion at the end of the day. Music is very subjective.

“If you don’t like this album then you are truly a hater”. I don’t like Christina Aguilera’s album Lotus. Does that mean I hate her? No, I just don’t like her album Point invalid.

@Jer do you know Beyonce personally? Because it puzzles me that the only people that think Beyonce is fake are the people who have never actually met her and have gathered their interpretation from Youtube. Theres a difference between being media trained and fake as a person. When have you ever heard anyone WHO HAS ACTUALLY MET HER/KNOWS HER say anything negative about her as a person? I wish the same could be said for the likes of Rihanna and Xtina.

  • 12. Get It Over With – Taking the tempo down a notch, this dreamy track from James Fauntleroy and Brian Kennedy, who co-wrote half of 2009′s “Rated R,” is a chilled-out, reflective song that finds Rihanna “wondering why you keep thundering / won’t you just fuckin’ rain / and get it over with.”

  • 13. No Love Allowed – Much in the same way that 2010′s “Man Down” saw Rihanna paying tribute to her Barbados heritage with a reggae torch song, “No Love Allowed” takes a similar approach over a bubbly, dubbed-out groove from producer No I.D. “Broken heart was the case / go’on and put him away / He’s the only one one one / I let get the best of me,” she cries to the love police.

  • 14. Lost In Paradise – Ending things on a somber-but-hopeful note, this bouncy StarGate track finds Rihanna clouded by past heartbreak when she sings, “It may be wrong but it feels right / All my fears are gone tonight / I’m so lost in paradise.” What could otherwise be a forgettable midtempo ballad is saved by frequent tempo drops and interjections of “Bass slap!”

People will always have their own opinions so there’s nothing much you can do about that. But I’m not going to criticise an artist’s music just because I dont like them. Im going to do it based on the quality of the songs, regardless of how “shit of a performer” that artist apparently is. With that said the stand outs for me have to be:
Phresh Out The Runway (the swag and attitude is what appeals to me the most)
    No Love Allowed
    Nobodys Business
Loveeeeee Song (one of the best song on there)
    Diamonds

Of course the Navy will eat this shit up and pretend it’s the best thing since sliced bread. And then still no number in the mainstream domestic market. (USA billboard 200??) While the regular public will consider it mediocre. Of course I like the song “Diamonds”. Numb is a song that has a nice beat. However, there’s still no substance to it. I guess it’s just a laid back kinda track. Really felt rihanna recorded that while high or sumthin…..the rest of the songs BLAH. I guess I would have to be a stan to enjoy them though. Overall, nothing on this album stands out. I fell asleep quite literally listening to the snippets. I doubt I will be able to bear the full album. And btw, she’s not grown as an artist. She’s only grown in the aspect that she knows what’s in store so she does what’s she’s told. I can’t get mad at her living her dreams but if she was really growing she woulda wrote some songs, got voice lessons, cared about rehearsing, etc…I think you get the drift. It’s just the same basic bitch every year with different songs. YAWN. Next.

The performances were met with rave reviews including Time Magazine calling for the “2011 Grammys be renamed: The Rihanna Show”. (The Grammy committee clearly took notice for the upcoming 2012 ceremony, as the recently revealed nominations include a nod in the highly coveted “Album of The Year” category for Loud.) The first week sales won’t be anything to write home about as well as the chart placement.

Rihanna just needs to start taking herself more seriously as an artist if she wants more people to buy her music.

For the others that do know you can clearly hear every song that she basically ripped off. “Pour it up” is a “Bandz a make her dance” rip off thats twice as bad. Loveee song is her take on a Future song which is why he is on it. “Numb” tries to be a hippie/drug induced party song and probably will sound better if you were high or drunk but when you’re not….”Jump” sound like it had so much promise, i mean who would think to use a “Pony” as a sample for a pop song? After a listen I found out why nobody else has tried it. It’s funny now after listening to most of the album, save a couple, I find the ones that I thought I would hate I know like (appreciate) them more than I did before.

Like any other person who occasionally has a sweet tooth, or taste for a Mcdonalds or any other fast food around i had to take a small little bit. When i took that small little bit i found myself at my local medical facility wishing i hadn’t cheated on my diet. This was purely mystery meat combined with a well advertised effort. At the end of the day even with out a strict diet i for one would pass on this even i were a skinny starving child from a third world country.

“Unapologetic” is a fairly listenable album with a few good moments. However, I think it’s SAFE to say that I think Rihanna needs to take a much needed break after her world tour. She’s solidified herself as a “hitmaker”, but I think it’s time she focuses on her artistry. I think she’s on the right track (her SNL performances were GREAT) but she’s has to REALIZE that at this point in her career, it NEEDS to be about QUALITY. The QUANTITY (dropping an album every year) “schtick” has ran its course.

FAVORITE SONGS: “No Love Allowed”, “Love WIthout Tragedy/Mother Mary” & “Loveeeeeee Song” (it’s my guilty pleasure!)

Here is what I wrote the other day:

Reading the reviews of the album, I see a lot people don’t like “Get It Over With.” Sorry, that song is BRILLIANT. Here are my top 5 in order:

    1. Love Without Tragedy-Mother Mary – Sick! Beautiful!
    2. Get it Over With – Ethereal greatness. I LOVE stripped down Rihanna.
    3. Diamonds- You already know.
    4. Loveeeee Song- Get.into.this.shit. Goes hard!
    5. Stay- Gorgeous

This is my second Rihanna purchase. The first was “Rated R.” I also enjoyed “TTT.”

I guess I like dark Rihanna best. I think this album will ultimately become my favorite. I just wish she would have left off that terrible “Right Now.” The only bad song on the album.

    Rihanna

    Unapologetic

    Universal

    one star out of five

Tucked in the home stretch of her seventh album, Rihanna offers us the year’s most surreal moment.

Jaw-dropping in its cynical manipulation and hypocrisy, Nobody’s Business features the singer in a duet with Chris Brown, the restraining order after he used her face as a punching bag seemingly a distant memory.

It’s not a big surprise, since the two had collaborated earlier this year on a remix of Birthday Cake. Yet there’s something even more nauseating and sinister about this track, which is otherwise a pretty fair R&B smoker: its message. Incredibly, this second collaboration between abuser and victim is not just about letting bygones be bygones. What the two seem to want is for everyone to just mind their own business and leave them alone.

Seriously? If so, why make this demand on a no-doubt-platinum album? The not-so-hidden agenda of such self-mythologizing is to get people talking, listening and, of course, buying. This sanctimonious request for privacy comes off, paradoxically, as a publicity grab.

The rest of the album is pretty much the expected combo of tuneless dance-floor swill, Autotune assault, forgettable ballads and deeply dumb lyrics that celebrate little but partying, money and celebrity.

Unapologetic is more or less divided between an uptempo, surrender-to-the-beat first half and a more introspective, slower-paced second section. The David Guetta-produced opener Fresh Off the Runway, all robotic whomp and f-bomb shtick, quickly establishes a melody-free, pedestrian turf. Things become slightly more interesting with Numb, a decent duet with Eminem that takes a fatal turn with its wince-inducing, brain-dead words.

“I’m the butt police, and I’m looking at your rear rear rear/But the odds are I’ma end up in the back of a squad car,” Eminem raps. Number of people sharing writing credits on the track: seven.

It’s a recurring problem as an army of writers and producers — including the Swedish team Stargate, The-Dream and Future — look for a cut of Rihanna’s inexplicable popularity and scramble to get their names on the disc. But there’s no doctoring this weak material.

For every tiny moment of hope — the oddly intriguing production on Jump or the decent first section of Love Without Tragedy/Mother Mary (in which Rihanna seems to be asking “Mr. Jesus” to help her with those world domination plans) — there are too many spirit crushers like the clubby cliché Right Now, the instantly unmemorable slow-tempo duet Stay, featuring Mikky Ekko, and the aptly-titled Get It Over With.

In the end, there’s little here but look-at-me hype and factory-made, soulless product. With this disc, Rihanna most clearly defines herself as a triumph of marketing.

  • Asb someone who isnt a Rihanna fan i was looking forward to the album after the song Diamonds which grabbed me, but i have to say that i was again dissapointed. Rihannas image and antic take centre stage again to what i find another lackluster album that is more or less of the same vein as TTT but littered with unessary swear words. The album does have its highlights, the fantastic “Nobodys Business” that really has nothing to do with Rihanna or Chris but more the retro sound and essance of Michael Jackson that carries the song and its basic lyrics through 3.36 seconds, apart from this the other highlights are stay, half of me and the song Diamonds which shows a more mature Rihanna album rides along pretty much like the others.

Say what you want, Rihanna continues to play with her sound. Her experimentation is creative. She refuses to get comfortable with a particular sound. When I listen to the album, I feel like I’m listening to all her albums at once.

Her voice is so interesting to listen to. She isn’t a Gladys Knight or Patti Labelle, but she doesn’t claim to be. I listen to her voice for its obvious and unique difference. In the midst of similar sounds & voices…..I look to Rihanna for being different & trendsetting.

    Reb’l Fleur indeed….

The only song I don’t like on the album is “Right Now”, otherwise the album is decent. My faves are “Phresh out the Runway”, “Numb”, “Pour it Up”, “Love w/o Tragedy”, “Stay”, “Lost in Paradise”. “Jump”, “What Now”, “Get It Over With”, “No Love Allowed” , “Half of Me”, “Love Song” are ok. I love “Numb”, I have that song on constant repeat.

If you begin to name black female pop stars from the 1980′s
until now, you’ll be hard pressed to find more than a handful. That handful includes names such as Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston. And to be honest, the list doesn’t go much further than that. Of course there have been many black female artists in the past thirty years, but there are very few who have taken over top 40.

Why is this? There’s no science to it. I think it has more to do with marketing and image. For instance, when the world was first introduced to Whitney Houston she had the looks of America’s Sweetheart and the voice of a real diva. By hooking up with record industry legend Clive Davis, he managed to help her maintain a viable MTV presence as well as appearances on national shows that garnered attention from the mainstream media. When Houston peaked in the early 1990s, she was still seen as all-American and wholesome even though she married the troublesome Bobby Brown.

  • Janet Jackson also had the same innocence and appeal due to her following that was built from fans of her brothers (Jackson 5) as well as her own fans from her stints on shows like Fame and Good Times. By the time of her breakthrough album in 1986, Janet was seen as sassy and fun-loving but still relatively harmless. It wasn’t until her 1993 album, Janet that people finally saw her as a young woman with a deep and powerful sexuality. However, because of nearly a lifetime in public, she was still highly regarded.

  • And then there’s Beyonce who essentially picked up where Janet left off. She fronted the childhood group of friends that became Destiny’s Child and around 2003 launched the solo career which she is currently known for. Destiny’s Child was a powerful launching pad because of their girl-power anthems and sassy attitude. But due to frequent lineup changes and other issues, the group ultimately broke up. It was hoped that Beyonce would continue the legacy of the group’s female-empowered anthems, but she opted to go in a different direction.

  • Beyonce’s success has paved the way for more black females in pop, most notably Rihanna who inevitably drew comparison’s since she was signed by none other than Jay-Z at the tender age of 16. However, for all of Beyonce’s influence Rihanna’s musical style is more of a fusion of dance, pop, and reggae. But the comparisons remain nonetheless.

Beyonce released Dangerously in Love in 2003 to rave reviews and multiple Grammy wins. It was hailed as one of the best solo debuts for a young artist in several years and Beyonce managed to stand out in an era filled with young singers leaving their groups in hope of solo success.

She set the standard and booty shake for the decade with her debut single, “Crazy in Love.” The go-go inspired beats and the electrifying video garnered a lot of acclaim. She followed that up with successful hit singles.

In 2006. she released her second album. The video for the first single,”Deja Vu” evoked images of Josephine Baker and the infamous banana skirt. Beyonce stated that she was paying homage to a fashion icon and trailblazer among African-Americans; she worked closely with Baker’s son even to capture the essence of the look.

Beyonce had managed to get away with that, but by the time of her third album, people weren’t hearing it. I Am.. Sasha Fierce garnered multiple Grammys, but that still didn’t silence Beyonce’s critics.

“Single Ladies” was a movement in 2008. The dance, the look, all infiltrated pop culture at warp speed. However, it was not without controversy. The hand motions, especially gave way to the fact that Beyonce said she was inspired by the choreography of the legendary of Bob Fosse.

But no matter how many funny SNL parodies pop up, there were steal multiple controversies about that dance among others. While Beyonce continues to say she was inspired by the looks and performances of other icons, no doubt even performing with one of them. This question of stealing has now hit a peak in 2011.

It’s one thing when a younger artist is inspired by an icon to the extent they mimic a look, a movement, or even a sound but it’s another thing when the movements and looks begin to mirror another artist than reveal a distinct persona.
