Album Review (With A Twist): Rihanna – ‘Unapologetic’

Published: Monday 19th Nov 2012 by Sam

Seven years. Seven albums. And seven million opinions. Rihanna has undoubtedly become one of Pop’s most pronounced polarizers.  Indeed, in an industry which sees tastes and consumption pattens change with the wind, some cultural commentators see the star’s candy-coloured wigs and annual albums as the blueprint for commercial survival. For others, her quantity over quality approach is the root cause of everything wrong with the once flourishing music business.

Whatever one’s take on the Bajan bombshell, the fact is…you have one; an ethos the 24 year old is all-too-aware of on her latest opus ‘Unapologetic’.

A flagrant courter of controversy, the album ironically takes aim with the tabloid flames she and her team ignited to burn her name into mass consciousness. Smartly, though, such themes are merely a light undercoat to an otherwise “business as usual” Rihanna LP. Catchy hooks, stellar production, and questionable vocals characterise much of the record; again, polarizing opinion. For, while some love her for this, it’s these exact traits that certain sects loathe.

Alas, in tipping our hats to the Roc Nation star’s status as That Grape Juice’s most-talked-about act, we want to hear YOUR review of ‘Unapologetic’! Did she deliver? Did she disappoint? Sound off below!

That Grape Juice’s Favourite ‘Unapologetic’ Tracks:

* Nobody’s Business (ft. Chris Brown)

* No Love Allowed

* Stay

* Jump

That Grape Juice’s Least Favourite ‘Unapologetic’ Tracks:

* Fresh Off The Runway

* Numb (ft. Eminem)

*Right Now (ft. David Guetta)

That Grape Juice Rating: 3/5

Conclusive: Album boasts strong moments, yet is plagued by disturbing and heavy portions of filler.

Honestly it’s just oky, I still say rated r Is her best. Numb is th worst song on the album.

    Overall 7/10

    • That B*tch (redbone) November 19, 2012

Numb is the worst song? WHAT? That song is the ish!

      • MC November 19, 2012

It was one of the worst songs, I agree. It takes the cake for the most repetitive Rihanna song ever (more repetitive that WFL). Even Slim Shady’s 30 seconds of rap was crap and couldn’t save that song. It was so boring! she keep singing “I’m going numb” for majority of the song.

      • Music maniac November 19, 2012

Yea man, love her tone, but its pob one of those tracks u gotta listen to a couple

      • That B*tch (redbone) November 19, 2012

The first time I heard it I liked it, so I didn’t need it to grow on me but I dont think Eminem was needed. She should’ve just added her own verse.

    • damone November 19, 2012

Numb is my favorite track, its a grower she’s giving me “Sell me candy” tease. I honestly love this whole album perfect mixture of pop/hip-hop

      Pour it up
      Numb
      Phresh out the runway

Are my faves as of now

      • NAVY AND HIVE MEMBERS: CANT WE ALL JUST SUPPORT 2 BLACK WOMEN IN DA GAME!!! KING RIH AND BEYONCE!!!!! November 19, 2012

LOVEEEEEE SONG NUMB JUMP AND STAY WHAT NOW AND LOST IN PARADISE IS MY FAVES!!!

    • REALEST November 19, 2012

lol numb is actually one of my favs, the beat is banging and i love how she keeps repeating the hook then hook then eminem come in viciously rapping all fast and s***..such a feel good ball so hard song.

    • RIHANNA DOESN’T WRITE November 19, 2012

I’M VERY SAD THAT SHE DOESN’T HAVE ANY WRITING CREDITS OR PRODUCING CREDITS. VERY SAD

      • Lax November 19, 2012

“I don’t wanna give you the wrong impression/ I need love and affection,” Rihanna and guest rapper Future insist on ‘Loveeeeeee Song’. It’s one of many ballads on her latest album that tap into somewhere deeper than your average slowie because of the circumstances surrounding her and Chris Brown which, whether she likes it or not, are felt throughout Unapologetic.

      • Lax November 19, 2012

Another is the set’s lead single ‘Diamonds’, a Sia-penned serenade about beautiful-but-ultimately-doomed love that could easily be attributed to her on-off ex, even if she did dedicate the song to her recently-deceased grandma Dolly.

      • Lax November 19, 2012

The same goes for “Stay”, the LP’s most
Underproduced track that includes the lyric: “Not really sure how to feel about it/ Something in the way you move makes me feel like I can’t live without you” – a line that sounds even more poignant when offset by Mikky Ekko’s angelic vocal.

      • Lax November 19, 2012

Then there’s the duet with the man himself on ‘Nobody’s Business’, an uptempo R&B-funk number which finds Brown doing his best Michael Jackson impression (who shares a co-write here) and, cleverly, serves as one of the album’s standouts. Its playfulness is short lived though, if the seven-minute confession ‘Love Without Tragedy’/’Mother Mary’ – which curiously shares the same producers – is anything to go by.

      • Lax November 19, 2012

Elsewhere, there’s a sense of last-minute record label box-ticking. The Chase & Status-helmed wobble on the chorus of ‘Jump’ and a dancefloor-friendly bounce courtesy of David Guetta on ‘Right Now’ are somewhat safe options; but there’s plenty elsewhere (including closers ‘No Love Allowed’ and Labrinth-produced ‘Lost in Paradise’)
That proves why, Eight years and seven Albums, RIHANNA is still the Biggest Popstar on the Planet!!!

      • Ugh November 19, 2012

I see u are a loyal fan…how the heck does she always manage to land In the R&B category!? It so annoying…

I don’t think so! Everybody has their own preference.I think the song is hot, it reminds me of mad house.Might even smash the Urban market with a video. Rihanna meant to make it repetitive for some kind of dramatic effect. I think it’s cool.

        Haters Rih says,,,

I’m so comfortable in the skin I’m in, I’m secure about who I am, so you go ahead and talk all you wanna, I built up a shell and it’s hard and it’s armored. It seems like every step I take up, drama comes along with the bread I cake up. But you ain’t doing nothin if you don’t have haters, so I welcome you to do what’s in your nature.

      • barbie November 19, 2012

@Lax, you need to really ZIP IT!!! Rhi is not comfortable in her skin. She is VERY insecure hence her silly attitude. NO WOMAN who is comfortable in their skin behaves like that so STOP it. You should be encouraging her to seek help so that she does become comfortable in her skin. SHEESH!!!

The songwriter, who wrote “I Was Here” on Beyoncé’s latest album, 4, played a few songs for the singer last week in New York, where Beyoncé was in town performing at the United Nations for World Humanitarian Day.

  3. Reece Davis November 19, 2012

The album is a lot more cohesive than Talk That Talk was and is currently on repeat!

Favourite songs: Get It Over With (!!!!), No Love Allowed.Nobody’s Business
Least favourite: Numb – I just don’t get it

    • damone November 19, 2012

    • JER November 19, 2012

I don’t think it’s very “cohesive” I hear 2 separate albums. I hear a beautiful album of vulnerable ballads with a ratchet EP tacked on

Rihanna took the throne as the queen of Facebook, beating out Lady Gaga as the most popular female star on the social networking site. The singer currently boasts over 60 million ‘likes’ on the Facebook.

Shuter says that the Rihanna’s series of controversies have been met with unfair amount of heavy criticism.

“In her prime, Madonna did much more controversial videos than Rihanna. And several singers of the past made videos that revealed more than just their b******,” said Shuter.

On Twitter yesterday, Rihanna eluded to her most recent display of nudity when a mean-spirited follower pointed out that she looked fat as she filmed her new video, saying ”@rihanna looks fat in music video pics.”

Rihanna replied with humor as she said, ‘I peeped that too puts down donut.’

Comparing the collaboration to working with Meryl Streep or Robert De Niro in film, Warren marveled at how natural it felt to work with Beyoncé. “Some people come in my studio and I’m like, ‘Oh God,’ and you’ve got to fix them up and it’s just hard,” she said. “Some of the people that get deals, you just can’t understand. But then when you work with a Beyoncé or so sadly Whitney [Houston]. . . it’s so beautiful.”

Warren – who counts Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” Celine Dion’s “Because You Love Me,” Toni Braxton’s “Un-Break My Heart,” and Starship’s “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” among her songwriting credits – has also been working with Dion, Kylie Minogue, John Legend, Emeli Sande and former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland, among others, and has written a song that’s “probably going to be Aerosmith’s single.”

I listened to the whole album (standard version) and needless to say, it was not “it” for me. Remember this is MY perception of the album after listening to it.

    1. Phresh off the runway:…………? Do I really need to say anything……….this was ratchet, hood, ghetto, filled with auto-tune from top to bottom. [1/5]

    2. Diamonds: I didn’t like it in the beginning (still not a big fan) but after listening to the whole album…..I must say its one of the standouts…….[3/5]

    3. Numb: This song takes the cake for the most repetitive Rihanna song (more repetitive that WFL). Slim Shady’s 30seconds rap couldn’t save it. It was one of the more boring tracks on the album…..she basically sang “I’m going numb” almost the whole time. [2.5/5]

    4. Pour it up: This song is Rihanna’s second attempt at raping (first being Phresh off the runway) and needless to say it was horrible……….? Again, this is a ratchet, hood, auto-tuned s***. [1/5]

    5. Loveeeeee song: This song was okay…..I liked Rihanna’s version, but that guy Future ruined it. I cannot get over his auto-tuned filled version of the song. [3/5]

    6. Jump: Originally I thought this song was going to be good, and it was but it turned out to be a little generic that I expected……after listening to tracks 1-5, it was a miracle that I found a song that I was cool with. [3.5/5]

    7. Right now: It was an okay song too, I mean I liked the chorus but it was generic song. [3/5]

    8. What now: This song is one of the best tracks on this album, I thought it was good. [4/5]

    9. Stay: Another great song on this album, I liked everything about this song, so yay! [4.5/5]

    10. Nobody’s Business: I liked the chorus of the song but I felt Rihanna was trying too hard to sound hood and ghetto on this track and the amount of auto-tune was just killing it off for me. [3/5]

    11. Love without tragedy/ Mother Mary: This song had to be the most disappointing for me. I thought fro the snippet and title that I would love this song, but I was disappointed. This song was almost 7 mins long and the first half was great but by the time the second half was happening, I was getting bored. (I need to re-listen to this song though…..maybe I misjudged it) —- No ranking….second listen is needed.
    ______________________________________________
UPDATE: A couple of listens later, this song was indeed really good but I misjudged it. My favorite part is the first 2 mins. and the ending. [4.5/5]
    ____________________________________________

    12. Get it over with: I was bored listening to this song. Rihanna was singing in a lower octave range and I found it hard to pay attention to the lyrics and song. [2/5]

    13. No love allowed: YES! One of the best song on the album. I was enticed and happy through the song. [5/5] ==== Man down anyone?

    14. Lost in paradise: Great song, absolutely enjoyed it. [4.5/5]

So overall from my initial reaction to my very first listening to Unapologetic….I must say I was disappointed for the most part….I will re-listen to it over the weekend for another try but…….no…….. I rank this album [2.5-3/5]

Standout: No love allowed, Lost in paradise, Stay, Love without tragedy/Mother Mary and What now.

Weakest tracks: Pour it up, Phresh off the runway, Numb, and Get it over with.

    • RoyalKev November 19, 2012

OMG … this is almost EXACTLY how I felt about the album. Pour It Up and Presh does sound ratchet and basic! I’m not conecting with Diamond either and tbh, Future is the one that ruins Loveee Song for me as well.

I like Get It Over With, you should give that another try. Jump sounds so much like an Aaliyah song.
IMO, Birthday Cake >>>>> Nobody’s Business.
Totally agree, We both think Paradise and No Love Allowed are winners! 🙂

  12. Fresh (Navy – Perry) November 19, 2012

    Unappologetic re-affirms Rihanna’s r&b roots
prooves she isnt just merely a pop star with excellent vocals lush production

The Thing However that is the issue with most critics is not the quality of the album but rather the message she sends on songs such as Love Without Tragedy Stay and Nobodies Business

They Loath\ her relationship with Chris and this album with 3/4 albums is about the relationship

as MTV best said depending on how you feel about Rihanna’s personal life that is how you will feel about Unapologetic.

    Score 4.5/5

she lost point 5 for Numb ….

Stand Outs : What Now, Diamonds, Loveeeeee Song, Pour It Up and Lost In Paradise

These are the same MOTHERF**KERS who love: MEL GIBSON, ALEC BALDWIN, CHARLIE SHEEN, EMINEM, OZZY OSBOURNE, SEAN PENN, SEAN CONNERY, JACKSON BROWNE, PAUL MACARTNEY, JOHN LENNON, JEFF GOLDBLUM, GLEN CAMPBEL, WILLIE NELSON, YANNI, ALAN JACKSON, TOMMY LEE, RICHIE SAMBORA,RODNEY ATKINS, NICK CARTER (BSB), ADAM LAMBERT (arrested for beat up his GAY LOVER), & pAnks man beating ass! • EzraJKnight November 19, 2012

I agree with MTV on that statement, it’s a real good album and you know it’s good when you get positive reviews from the White-Asian demographic. TGJ is very biased towards Rihanna and I wouldn’t be surprised if she got a low review from them but give their support to Ciara (Her first single I love but she sounds really pitchy and her second was straight up trash. Her production sounded cheap and like an amateur artist. Needs to step up.. Again MY opinion)

      • prettigurlrockD bitchess November 19, 2012

    • Lax November 19, 2012

They did not compare them She used Whitney

Remember a few Rihanna posts back I said TGJ would give a 3 out of 5 star ?? Kiii…

Unapologetic is #1 in 34 countries on iTunes. #1 album in the U.S. or not, she will be #1 worldwide. She’s international, that’s what matters.

Unapologetic is up there as her best album. Sonically. It’s a farcry from her previous efforts with pop smashes. It’s like she’s not aiming for BB Hot 100 chart smashes, and that’s good because the material is still strong.

    The haters, gag, choke, & swallow 34 f****** tiiiiiiimes…..!!!!!

Roc nation? Trying to tie Rita Ora, wishing she could have this success. NO, this is all due to the work of Defa Jam THAT IS THE LABEL THAT IS PAYING FOR THE PLANE AND HOTEL BILLS OF ALL THE PRESS. ROC NATION HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO SAY YES, IT IS GOING ON, WITH OR WITHOUT FLOP NATION AND THEIR FLOP ACTS WHO CANNOT SELL, AND PUSH ALBUMS BACK.

HA HA HA HA I thought RITA ORA was meant to stop this moment from happening? NO 1 IN 40 COUNTRIES, Rita ORA was meant to put an end to Rihanna. So why has she made her even BIGGER ? WAS THAT PART OF BEYONCE’S PLAN? MAKE RIHANNA THE BIGGEST POP STAR IN THE WORLD? WELL! IT WORKED. LOL LOL AT NO OFFICIAL DATE OF RITA ORA LP IN AMERICA. WHAT EXACTLY DOES EARLY NEXT YEAR MEAN? WHERE DID RIP CHART? F*** OUTTA HERE. THIS IS HER BEST LP AND EVERY TRACK IS STRONG.

    • Rihanna black madonna November 19, 2012

LOOOVE SONG IS NUMBER 60 ON ITUNES. THE NEXT SINGLE. I LOVE FUTURE TRAP LOVE SONG DUET . FORGET THUG LOVE. IT IS ALL ABOUT TRAP LOVE. WHEN WILL YO FAVE? NUMB IS NUMBER 68 ON ITUNES – EM IS THE BEST RAPPER ALIVE AND HE ONLY WORKS WITH RIHANNA. STAY IS NUMBER 69 – THAT IS THE BALLAD TO END ALL BALLADS. NOBODIES BUSINESS IS AT 71 – MAYBE CB BIGGEST HITS, COS WE ALL KNOW HE AINT S*** WITHOUT RIH. HALF OF ME IS AT 74. DIAMONDS REMIX WITH KANYE WEST IS AT 82 . RIGHT NOW IS AT 90. BOOM! MOST OF HER TRACKS ARE ON THE ITUNES CHART. SHE GOT AT LEAAST 7 BONAFIED hits. BEYONCE COULD NEVER. WHERE IS rita ORA on the itunes chart? SHE CANNOT EVEN CHART.

YOU ARE ALL FINISHED. RIHANNA IS NOW THE QUEEEN OF MUSIC. DEAL WITH IT OR DIE. THIS LP will bump way past the superbowl in FEB, which means BEYONCE COMEBACK IS ALREADY OVER. HOPEFULLY SHE RELEASES HER NEXT SINGLE THE SAME DAY AS THE SUPERBOWL, TO CRUSH BEYONCE’S COMEBACK.

      • Rihanna black madonna November 19, 2012

I know Rita Ora nation is going nuts when he / she sees the itunes chart. IN THE UK ITUNES CHART. Nobodies business, numb, love song, POTR. Right now, half of me, love without are all charting too. She gots back to back hits ready for lift off. Numb, nobodies business, looooooove song and most of the ballads and the david guetta tracks seem to be the people’s champ. WHERE IS RITA ORA?

      • Rihanna black madonna November 19, 2012

Rita ORA is not gonna catch her now. She is 7 year deep into a mega growing career that has blown taylor, gaga, beyonce, katy etc out the water. Rita Ora is a flop, with no hits and she thinks she can take on Rihanna? Rita could not even beat Rihanna during GIL – unfaithful and SOS wre way bigger then any of her 10 flop singles. Rih does not even need heavy promo to sell. Too late Beyonce. You should of tried to take Rih out the game in 2006. Now……Beyonce, you have to beg Rih for a collabo, to help sell your 5th album which will FLOP WORSE THAN XTINA

      • prettigurlrockD bitchess November 19, 2012

  23. Dainty November 19, 2012

All of her albums are rushed. What’s so surprising about that? UAG is light years better than TTT, but falls short compared to Rated R and Loud. I feel like she was going for a similar dark vibe, sans RR, but it didn’t work out.

UAG isn’t a bad album IMO. Not GREAT, but I like the direction shes headed in. Standouts include: Loveeee Song, What Now, Stay, Nobody’s Business, No Love Allowed & Half Of It.

I want Rihanna to take a break, and deliver a MASTERPIECE in 2014. An album that FLOWS and isn’t just random hot tracks thrown together.

    3/5 stars from me.

    • Lax November 19, 2012

Many just has to find something to try and be negative about,
oh well that is what helps the Navy to go even harder and support her even more when We read all of the Negativity, and bull!!

      • Common Sense November 19, 2012

Actually it’s the opposite. You’re so enamored with Rihanna that you’re COMPLETELY blind to her faults. No matter how s***** her album is YOU will never admit it. She could personally s*** talk you and you would find a way to make it be positive. Unless someone is kissing her ass you consider it an attack. SICKENING.

  24. Shun November 19, 2012

I plan to buy “Unapologetic” this week. This will be the first Rihanna cd I have ever bought.

  25. MUSIC HEAD November 19, 2012

I actually love this album, one fav from her but guess it depends on everyone taste. Unapologetic is her most experimental yet adventurous album which caters to a wide range of audience that consist of deferent genres from the r&b/uraban hip hop democgraphic (phresh off the runway, pour it up) to the indie/pop-tarts (stay, diamonds), the dubstep music heads (jump, right now) and the reggae hippies (no love allowed) and to some extent the rockers..and as whole the album flows naturally without coming off contrive and inconsistant 4/5

  26. Mobwife: “Breezy taught Me” November 19, 2012

LOL, WOW @SAM/TGJ gave “Unaplogetic” 3 out of 5 stars 0_O? This damn CD must be a MASTERPIECE…..LOL 🙂

  27. JER November 19, 2012

Just because you don’t like a few songs doesn’t automatically make it “filler.” You tried. If you want filler, go grab Rihanna’s first 2 albums. That’s filler. There aint an ounce of filler on this album. UNAPOLOGETIC is everything Un4tunate tried and failed to do.

    • Rihanna black madonna November 19, 2012

    • prettigurlrockD bitchess November 19, 2012

You had to come for beyonce but the b**** still went number 1 and not just on itunes. LOL. And yes, it will STILL be filler if it’s getting no hype from the public. The same thing. I say a few songs from the album will be memorable for a few months, etc and that’s it. The same with all her other albums except loud which predominately aimed for cute bubblegum radio friendly hits and succeeded. I dont see this album ever being on that level.

      • JER November 19, 2012

No Rihanna album is too good (obviously)
But this one is REALLY bad. Diamonds is easily the best song on the album and even in that one and despite being kind of beautiful and catchy there´s something wrong with it: Rihanna struggling to make her voice sound interesting
There are 3 or 4 songs worth the listen and the rest…. crap (even with all the producers one can get in this nowadays sad industry)

Enimem wouldn’t feature himself on a track unless it’s good and the only person I know he’s done a feature with was Dr. Dre and Rihanna (That I could remember or is relevant at the moment). The song shades everyone’s opinion of it, if Enimem puts his name there then it’s a hit.

low grade her efforts now would ya.
Its clear that there’s always something to be stated or commented on about Rihanna and how she does things.
Many of you have been shyt talking Her Efforts so long that you have forgotten your first Name.

  36. boopboop November 19, 2012

i don’t think even those 3somes rita supposedly has with jay and bey are gonna keep her from getting dropped. sexing them is the prob the only reason her ass wasn’t sent back to albania after her singles flopped in the us!

it wolda been cheaper for bey and jay to hire a prostitute and pay her once andthen send her on her way than to shell out millions on a s** toy who’s album had to be pushed back and prob wont get released even “early” next year!

    • Rihanna black madonna November 19, 2012

IT IS A WRAP FOR RITA ORA. Do you know what she was doing? Making a cheap video in London , with K koke 9 ( who ? ) another flop rapper on roc nation. SHE IS DONE. SHE NEVER BEGAN.

    • Rihanna black madonna November 19, 2012

Watch Rita Ora beg to get the rejected tracks from this LP. Watch her try and copy this formula. But she cannot do,POP, hip hop, trap, reggae, ballads, dance etc. SHE CANNOT DO S***. HENCE WHY SHE IS GETTING DROPPED.

    • Rihanna black madonna November 19, 2012

WHEN IS EARLY NEXT YEAR? JAN OR FEB?

      • boopboop November 19, 2012

prob jan or feb BUT if gaga is releasing around that time…she said ARTPOP would be “early 2013” then ORA will be pushed back AGAIN to summer i bet, then fall if none of her singles chart in America AGAIN

  37. Rihanna black madonna November 19, 2012

THE MOST DIVERSE SINGER EVER. MADONNA AND JANET CANNOT DO REAGGE, TRAP, HIP HOP, DUBSTEP ETC. Well done Rihanna. She has managed to incorporate a range of producers. Future produced Loooooooove song. Good move for giving him a chance. Labrinth from the UK co produced a song. Mikky Ekko and some other rock dudes done stay. The dream done the CB duet a departure from his normal sign. SO MUCH hits and genres on this LP. HER BEST YET. THIS CRUSHES CIARA, KEYSHIA AND BRANDY. WHAT BLACK SINGER CAN DO THIS?

    • Common Sense November 19, 2012

      The delusions…

  38. Lax November 19, 2012

On paper, Rihanna releasing her seventh album in seven years would suggest a Quantity-over-Quality work ethic that’s bound to wear thin. But on “Unapologetic,” Rihanna proves once again that she can set and often raise the bar for modern pop music.

    • Common Sense November 19, 2012

No, it really doesn’t. It proves she’s desperate to remain relevant.

  39. Lax November 19, 2012

Amping up on urban, dubstep-leaning R&B and scaling back on the often awkward s** jams that populated the second half of 2011’s “Talk That Talk,” “Unapologetic” is Rihanna’s most confident, emotionally resonant work since 2009’s “Rated R.” There’s hard-hitting club songs (“Phresh Out The Runway,” …

“Pour It Up,” the Ginuwine-sampling “Jump”), feel-good dance jams (David Guetta-produced “Right Now,” Chris Brown duet “Nobody’s Business”) and a surprising abundance of heartfelt ballads lead single “Diamonds,”
    “Stay”,,,

featuring Mikky Ekko, the confessional suite “Love Without Tragedy/Mother Mary” and bonus track “Half Of Me”), all of which showcase Rihanna’s voice in ways the listener hasn’t heard before. Like previous Rihanna projects, “Unapologetic” is destined to crank out at least five singles over the next 12 months (or until it’s time for the next album, anyway).

    • Rihanna black madonna November 19, 2012

Rihanna can kick back and relax. The pressure is now on beyonce and Rita Ora.

    • Common Sense November 19, 2012

Rihanna kick back and relax? LOL!!! We all know she has to start work on her 8th studio album soon if she’s going to release eight albums in eight years. The moment she takes a break is the moment she fades into obscurity.

      • zzzzg November 20, 2012

        I doubt it

  41. RoyalKev November 19, 2012

This review is fair. I find that this album has more variety on it. I applaud her for not doing things that are expected of her. Rihanna’s known for following trends and this time around she didn’t record songs that were designed to sound like everything currently played on the radio (that would be easily forgotten later). Some moments actually felt authentic (Stay) and certain tracks on the album stand out and have a cool vibe (Jump, No Love Allowed, Get It Over With, Paradise).

My main gripe with Unapologetic is that Rihanna is simply not singing on some of these songs. At times that did take away from the music. The structure is lazy at times (no verses, unfinished songs that seem to have lyrics replaced by a lot of mixing and repeated hooks). This album is one of Rihanna’s more listenable as a whole, but it’s not very consistent. There are songs that had potential to be amazing, intead those were the let downs (Loveeeee Song, Numb and I just hate Fresh off The Runway)!!!

This album has the best of Loud and GGGB and the worst of TTT. It’s an odd gumbo for me!

    • JER November 19, 2012

      Rihanna follows trends? Since when?

Served Dance Pop realness in 2006 with “S.O.S” when NOBODY was doing dance music.

Smashed with Stargate and Ne-Yo on “Unfaithful” BEFORE BeYAWNce had “Irreplaceable.”

Worked with The Dream on “Umbrella” before anybody

Smashed with “Only Girl,” one of the earliest EDM hits in the US after David Guetta/Akon’s “S*** B****”

Made Calvin Harris a superstar with “We Found Love”

I don’t see Rihanna following trends, she’s always at the forefront

      • Common Sense November 19, 2012

I could swear Madonna released a dance album in 2005/06 but I must have imagined it.

Slow pop song? They’ve always been around. Just ask Mariah’s 2 #1s in 2005/06.

Catchy pop song? They’ve always existed.

Spin it however you want. There is NOTHING revolutionary about Rihanna. It’s like calling Gaga original.

  43. OMG (Celine Dion) November 19, 2012

  44. Lax November 19, 2012

Phresh Out The Runway – “How could you be so hood but you’re so f*****’ pop? How could you be so fun and sound like you’re selling rocks?” Rihanna quotes one of her doubting peers in this swaggering, gritty club banger produced by The-Dream and David Guetta. “Unapologetic” is all about shaking up expectations, so opening with a straight-up hip-hop track produced by the biggest name in EDM quickly sets the tone.

  45. Lax November 19, 2012

    2 Diamonds,,,
As written by dance-pop torch singer du jour Sia Furler, “Diamonds” finds Rihanna doing one of her throatiest, most impassioned vocals to date (and one that seems to be channeling Sia herself) on this inspirational pop ballad. And as a strategic shift from recent singles like “Talk That Talk” and “Cockiness,” “Diamonds” further positions Rihanna in new stylistic categories, lest she settle on one format for too long.

    • Common Sense November 19, 2012

Sia has written beautiful songs in the past. Diamonds is not one of them.

  46. Lax November 19, 2012

    3. Numb (Featuring Eminem) – The last time Rihanna teamed with Eminem, it was on the massive, emotional “Love The Way You Lie.” This time around, the duo only has the club on its mind on this slow-grinding, Middle Eastern-flavored party track, which opens with Rihanna shrugging, “Ecstasy in the air / I don’t care / Can’t tell me nothin.'”

  47. Lax November 19, 2012

    4. Pour It Up – It’s not just the dudes who can flex their money and love of strippers. Rihanna turns her often-racy Twitter feed into an irresistible, Mike WiLL-produced banger for the ladies, chanting “Pour it up / pour it up / watch it all fall out” over a hypnotic beat and handclaps.Take note, 2 Chainz, Juicy J and the like – Rihanna’s coming after your territory.

  48. Auntie_Jackie November 19, 2012

Silly album, but it doesn’t matter. She’s not a musician. Two decent songs at best. This is the point at which she’s not just selling because of her name, her brand and personal drama. Congrats to her and her team–this is what they always wanted. To sell decently, get the wheels of that 360 deal turning with the minimum amount of effort. This album is that, unlike any of her previous ones which actually had at least two exceptional songs.

@AUNTIE While you might be right but i will tell you what
Me and the Navy isn’t going to write Rihanna OFF yet because To Us, Me, Navy We all feel that Rihanna has a great team , great work ethics and she have come a long way and its not going to be over until Rihanna decides that its over, so go on and You and those Others who Dislike her and Her Music don’t have to worry about it, Because Rihanna Her Navy and Her team have “Got This”.

  49. Lax November 19, 2012

    5. Loveeeee Song (Feat. Future) – Future’s Auto-Tune-soaked plea for “love and affection” gets a definitive response from Rihanna on this percolating duet.

Rihanna and Chris Brown’s ‘Nobodies Business’: What Do You Think?

  50. Lax November 19, 2012

    6. Jump – Sure, “Gangnam Style” is the horse-dance craze of 2012, but Ginuwine’s “Pony” has been having quite the cultural renaissance this year, thanks to its key role in the summer blockbuster “Magic Mike” and now this dubstep-ified update from Rihanna. “Jump” is an answer song of sorts to Ginuwine’s 90s classic, adding new verses on top of the existing chorus, which now erupts in a wall-shaking Skrillex-worthy breakdown. “You think I give a damn / but you know who I am / I don’t go around chasing no dude,” Rihanna reassures her conquest.

  51. Kylla November 19, 2012

No 1 on itunes. Thats whats wrong with music now. She is still a lazy performer and cant sing or dance. Yippee her handlers picked listenable songs for her to record backing tracks to. This is an attempt at relevance and people will become bored with her without media propping her up

  52. ENOUGH ONINKA November 19, 2012

Rating: 1.5/5 – This is her WORST album to date, absolutely awful. Navy, call me what you want but I’m an unbiased listener when it comes to Rihanna and this is NOT hot. Very poorly produced with lukewarm single choices to choose from. I thought the songs I might like would be better in its entirtlety…..nope, they got much worse, all 3 of em. Terrible album. I really hope she breaks for awhile cause its just been a downward spiral starting with Talk That Flop…

    • Pop Royalty (The International Navy’s Representative) November 19, 2012

not to the point of 1.5/5 tho , this is not a rating of an unbiased listener , this is what a fool gonna do.

ALL THE HATERS OR RUNNING SCARRED, RIGHT NOW.

  53. Lax November 19, 2012

    7. Right Now (Feat. David Guetta) – Perhaps the only song that adheres to the expected formula carved out by “Loud” and “Talk That Talk,” “Right Now” is a straightforward, four-on-the-floor feel-good anthem for the clubs. Thematically identical and musically similar to Ne-Yo and Calvin Harris’ “Let’s Go,” “Right Now” is exactly what you’d expect from the latest Rihanna-Guetta team-up, and nothing more.

  54. Lax November 19, 2012

    8. What Now – An unexpectedly vulnerable ballad from Rihanna that finds her acknowledging “this lump in my throat” before letting loose on an epic chorus that hits harder than anything she’s done in years. An emotional highlight on an album filled with moments of resonance in its second half.

  55. justfuckinrain November 19, 2012

I don’t understand the shade toward “potr”, numb, loveeeee song, Jump , pour it up,
this cd is everything!!!!!!!!! , I’m a huge bey stan and this album shits on “4”…. it’s cohesive , and a journey, wild and s*** everything a 24 yr old superstar would be expected to make … ill need you all to go listen 2 babs streisand because yall clearly have refined taste …. and miserable maybe just some old gay’s who don’t get it !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  56. Lax November 19, 2012

    9. Stay (Feat. Mikky Ekko) – As premiered on last week’s “Saturday Night Live,” “Stay” is Rihanna at her most intimate – a piano-backed duet with Brooklyn singer-performance artist Mikky Ekko with a 70s AM-radio melody that recalls Elton John or Billy Joel. If this is Rihanna indulging her adult-contemporary side, she couldn’t have picked a stronger ballad to demonstrate it.

  57. Lax November 19, 2012

    10. Nobody’s Business (Feat. Chris Brown) – If “Nobody’s Business” featured anyone but Chris Brown, it would still be celebrated as a wonderfully catchy throwback to early-90s club music. But because it’s a duet in which the tumultuous lovers proclaim “you’ll always be the one I want to come home to” and “you’ll always be my baby” for the world to hear, it makes the beyond-complicated circumstances of their history impossible to ignore. Judge for yourself — just try to resist the song’s many Michael Jackson-worthy charms.

  59. OK November 19, 2012

Her vocals have improved, but her material has gotten worse. If only she’d had the same improved voice on Rated R–good songs, but then she lacked the singing ability to really take the entire album to the next level.

All this promo, moreso than for Talk That Talk, it seems, appears to be a desperate attempt by her label to finally land her a #1 album in America. I don’t know if it will work, but good luck to her.

  60. Lax November 19, 2012

    11. Love Without Tragedy / Mother Mary – Coming right after “Nobody’s Business,” it’s hard to think that the first half of this seven-minute two-parter is channeling anyone but Chris Brown when Rihanna sings, “You took the best years of my life / I took the best years of your life / Felt love struck me with a knife / I pray that love don’t strike twice.” But just before things get any more somber, the song takes a confessional shift when the “Mother Mary” part kicks in, with Rihanna softly singing, “Mother Mary / I swear I’m gonna change / Mr. Jesus, I’d love to be a queen / But I’m from the left side of an island / Never thought this many people would even know my name.” A deeply personal song sold by Rihanna’s uplifting vocal.

  61. JER November 19, 2012

If you don’t like this album then you are truly a hater. People have been screaming that Rihanna doesn’t make “real music” and others have been saying she doesn’t make enough urban and R&B music WELL B****** she served you the exact album you wanted. There’s only one dance song on the album “Right Now” so I will stay clocking all the devastated and flattened Rihanna haters. She gives you an album filled with piano ballads and it’s “boring” and “filler” when a year ago you said she needs to take a page from Adele and focus on piano ballads. LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO you just shot yourself in the foot that was residing in your mouth. @Jer do you know Beyonce personally? Because it puzzles me that the only people that think Beyonce is fake are the people who have never actually met her and have gathered their interpretation from Youtube. Theres a difference between being media trained and fake as a person. When have you ever heard anyone WHO HAS ACTUALLY MET HER/KNOWS HER say anything negative about her as a person? I wish the same could be said for the likes of Rihanna and Xtina.

    12. Get It Over With – Taking the tempo down a notch, this dreamy track from James Fauntleroy and Brian Kennedy, who co-wrote half of 2009’s “Rated R,” is a chilled-out, reflective song that finds Rihanna “wondering why you keep thundering / won’t you just f*****’ rain / and get it over with.”

  63. Lax November 19, 2012

    13. No Love Allowed – Much in the same way that 2010’s “Man Down” saw Rihanna paying tribute to her Barbados heritage with a reggae torch song, “No Love Allowed” takes a similar approach over a bubbly, dubbed-out groove from producer No I.D. “Broken heart was the case / go’on and put him away / He’s the only one one one / I let get the best of me,” she cries to the love police.

  64. Lax November 19, 2012

    14. Lost In Paradise – Ending things on a somber-but-hopeful note, this bouncy StarGate track finds Rihanna clouded by past heartbreak when she sings, “It may be wrong but it feels right / All my fears are gone tonight / I’m so lost in paradise.” What could otherwise be a forgettable midtempo ballad is saved by frequent tempo drops and interjections of “Bass slap!”

  67. Saetana November 19, 2012

Does anyone know where I can stream the album please? Legally, I’m not a thief. I’ve checked out Spotify but its not on there yet. I remember Gaga had a deal with Metro to provide free streaming for a few days of Born This Way, has Rihanna done anything similar? I like Rihanna but I won’t buy her albums until I’ve had a proper listen as most of them have filler tracks amongst the gems (Rated R being the notable exception. I still haven’t decided whether to buy Talk That Talk, lol, so maybe I’ll have made my mind up about Unapologetic by this time next year ;o)

  68. AC/DC November 19, 2012

HAPPY THANKSGIVING PEOPLE! Don’t forget to pick up your copy of AC/DC’s catalog on itunes. Not only will it prevent unapologetic from hitting #1 in the U.S, but it’s an album thats actually worth buying! I

watch beyonce get “inspired” by UNAPOLOGETIC by doing similar sounding songs and even trying to copy the album cover and coming up with an almost identical title(like with ‘4’ when she copied adele’s ’21’)!

she;ll prob try to come out with a “edgier” image like SUCHA FARCE was supposed to be to try to attract a younger audience but will fail. her time is up and not even the sb will save her career. her 5th album will flop like LOTUS and BIONIC. she needs to send rita back to eastern europe and accept that rihanna has surpassed her and fade out quietly instead of desperately trying to be the #1 black IT GIRL again.

    • RIHANNA DOESN’T WRITE November 19, 2012

LOL it’s sad that Rihanna didnt write not ONE song off of her 7th album so chances are Beyonce can’t be inspired by something that Rihanna didn’t even make. 🙁

  70. @_Learik_ November 19, 2012

this is a Great step forward for Rih!! I don’t agree with the Faves and Least faces That Grape Juice choose AT ALLL!! This Album shows progression in her vocal performance and growth in album cohesion! “Nobody business” Is only yall’s favorite song cause CB on it, Its okay but its FAR from one of the Top songs on the CD! “LOOOOOVE Song”–Great single Potential
“Pour it up” and “Numb” — Great Party Songs
    “JUMP”- MY ISSSHHH
“Right Now” — Very Commercial but its a fun song that Will be a single
“Love Without Tragedy-Mother Mary” — Shows her new found vocal ability
    “No Love allowed”- Filler song
“Lost in Paradise”– Should be the next single
“Get it over with”– Does something to my spirit LOOOVE IT!!

  71. speechless November 19, 2012

I only like Jump, Love Song and Pour It Up (even though the lyrics suck).

  72. mkigz November 19, 2012

Honestly I like the majority of the songs on Unapologetic. It’s definitely different from Talk that Talk and a step up I would say. People will always have their own opinions so there’s nothing much you can do about that. But I’m not going to criticise an artist’s music just because I dont like them. Im going to do it based on the quality of the songs, regardless of how “s*** of a performer” that artist apparently is. With that said the stand outs for me have to be:
Phresh Out The Runway (the swag and attitude is what appeals to me the most)
    No Love Allowed
    Nobodys Business
Loveeeeee Song (one of the best song on there)
    Diamonds
Half of Me (one of if not the best song on the album)

  73. justiceSW November 19, 2012

MY HONEST OPINION IS THAT THE ALBUM IS HER BEST TO DATE. EVEN IF ITS NOT HER BEST IT SHITS ALL OVER TALK THAT TALK

  74. Que_T November 19, 2012

This album cover is just disgraceful! No class what so ever!

  75. Pop Royalty (The International Navy’s Representative) November 19, 2012

fair Enough from this Rihanna-hating Website.

I’m so F*****’ Disappointed in her , and that s*** she is giving in the album booklet need a f*****’ Long review as well , did it reached to “promoting Drugs” or what ?

only “Jump” , “Stay” and “No Love Allowed” And maybe ” Nobody’s Business” are the highlight , and if those are the highlight , you know that s*** ain’t “IT” for Me.

and i want my fellow navy to keep it real , this s*** is like microwaving your food for the 3rd time , it will never taste as good as a newly-cooked meal !!!!

Of course the Navy will eat this s*** up and pretend it’s the best thing since sliced bread. And then still no number in the mainstream domestic market. (USA billboard 200??) While the regular public will consider it mediocre. Of course I like the song “Diamonds”. Numb is a song that has a nice beat. However, there’s still no substance to it. I guess it’s just a laid back kinda track. Really felt rihanna recorded that while high or sumthin…..the rest of the songs BLAH. I guess I would have to be a stan to enjoy them though. Overall, nothing on this album stands out. I fell asleep quite literally listening to the snippets. I doubt I will be able to bear the full album. And btw, she’s not grown as an artist. She’s only grown in the aspect that she knows what’s in store so she does what’s she’s told. I can’t get mad at her living her dreams but if she was really growing she woulda wrote some songs, got voice lessons, cared about rehearsing, etc…I think you get the drift. It’s just the same basic b**** every year with different songs. YAWN. Next.

    • joker November 19, 2012

and no matter how you try to twist it the b**** is basic without a smart team behind her. That’s it. Keri Hilson writes her own music and does the same for others. She was not in the industry solely to be a singer, idiot.

Barbados native Rihanna, (Robyn Rihanna Fenty), is one of the most talked about females in the music and fashion world today. Her eye catching lyrics and edgy style is said to ‘push the boundaries of fashion and her music speaks for itself, and even though her music might be to grown up for many of the haters perhaps it will be there for them when they get older, lol..

      • Lax November 19, 2012

I believe Rihanna, , is a very versatile fashion icon. Her style varies from month to month, but she is always the first to set new trends. The hair trends and style trends she sets are chart topping, just like her music.

  79. aynon November 19, 2012

its just an okay album…Im glad there’s nothing as dirty as ‘Birthday Cake, Cockiness, Skin or Rude Boy’ on it which im surprised about, she wont be tapping her vage along to a song this year which is comforting.

The year began with a Grammy win for the lead single off Loud, “Only Girl (In The World)”, in “Best Dance Recording”. Rihanna performed twice that night, her five-time Grammy nominated collaboration, “Love The Way You Lie”, and her upcoming 2012 nomination, “What’s My Name”. The performances were met with rave reviews including Time Magazine calling for the “2011 Grammys be renamed: The Rihanna Show”. (The Grammy committee clearly took notice for the upcoming 2012 ceremony, as the recently revealed nominations include a nod in the highly coveted “Album of The Year” category for Loud.) Following the Grammys, she jetted across the Atlantic to attend the Brit Awards the following day, in which she won “International Female Artist of The Year”.

      • Lax November 19, 2012

SDOTB IRREVELANT SHYT TO RIHANNA’S HATERS…..
Rihanna took to twitter to express her excitement to her fans: “Came with a Grammy, left with a Brit!!!” In May, we saw Rihanna kicking off the return of the Billboard Music Awards with a performance of her #1 single, “S&M”, with fellow pop star Britney Spears. She was awarded that night with “Female Artist of The Year”, based on statical success on their charts. She followed out the year with a series of wins including People’s Choice (Pop Artist, Song, & Music Video), American Music Awards (R&B Album), BET Awards (Female R&B Artist), and a Soul Train Award.

    • Lax November 19, 2012

Rih’s style is a very edgy style. There is no one word to classify her. Her mix of lace and taste, so to speak, is one thing that keeps people coming back for more. She is definitely a style icon that knows how to dress with self-respect, but also adds the proper amount of “s** appeal” to every outfit. She may push the limits, but with Rihanna, the sky is the limit!…

  81. oncheckingbitches November 19, 2012

This album will sell like all her others.

The first week sales won’t be anything to write home about as well as the chart placement.

Rihanna just needs to start taking herself more seriously as an artist if she wants more people to buy her music.

I sure as Hell won’t spend my rent money and then some just to go watch some s** selling gimmick prance around stage half naked c****** f****** herself while lypsyching.

Yes we hear you. What it is is the hate for Rihanna because although she is Black she is not AMerican and you would rather see “white” Taylor get that #1 first. An Island girl like Rihanna for the likes of Sam and a lot of others here is a no no

  84. Umm November 19, 2012

To the people on this site that doesn’t know the current sound of urban music you’ll think Rihanna has created this new trend in music and nobody has ever done anything like this before. For the others that do know you can clearly hear every song that she basically ripped off. “Pour it up” is a “Bandz a make her dance” rip off thats twice as bad. Loveee song is her take on a Future song which is why he is on it. “Numb” tries to be a hippie/drug induced party song and probably will sound better if you were high or drunk but when you’re not….”Jump” sound like it had so much promise, i mean who would think to use a “Pony” as a sample for a pop song? After a listen I found out why nobody else has tried it. It’s funny now after listening to most of the album, save a couple, I find the ones that I thought I would hate I know like (appreciate) them more than I did before.

  85. Thomas Griffin November 19, 2012

My review is on my blog… I really feel like this is one of her better albums and didn’t sound as rushed as I had expected.

  86. honeychildplease November 19, 2012

Ok honestly i can’t stand the b**** that’s number one., BUt i make it my job to give credit, and tell the truth no matter what. Honestly i’m on a fast food diet, i am ridding my body of the toxins, and stomach aches that come from it. Like any other person who occasionally has a sweet tooth, or taste for a Mcdonalds or any other fast food around i had to take a small little bit. When i took that small little bit i found myself at my local medical facility wishing i hadn’t cheated on my diet. This was purely mystery meat combined with a well advertised effort. At the end of the day even with out a strict diet i for one would pass on this even i were a skinny starving child from a third world country.

  87. Blue ivy Carter November 19, 2012

Unapologetic SHITTTTTTS on Porktina Lardguileras album! What a flopppp!!!!

  88. DISTINGUISHED November 19, 2012

Hold up?! TGJ actually LIKES some of Rihanna’s music?! Ok, enough shade…
    .
“Unapologetic” is a fairly listenable album with a few good moments. However, I think it’s SAFE to say that I think Rihanna needs to take a much needed break after her world tour. She’s solidified herself as a “hitmaker”, but I think it’s time she focuses on her artistry. I think she’s on the right track (her SNL performances were GREAT) but she’s has to REALIZE that at this point in her career, it NEEDS to be about QUALITY. The QUANTITY (dropping an album every year) “schtick” has ran its course.

FAVORITE SONGS: “No Love Allowed”, “Love WIthout Tragedy/Mother Mary” & “Loveeeeeee Song” (it’s my guilty pleasure!)

  89. THE DIAMOND NAVY November 19, 2012

It doesn’t really matter what Rihanna’s ratchet haters club think considering the album has gone #1 in 31 countries

  90. BitchICan’tEvenSpellWelfare November 19, 2012

Here is what I wrote the other day:

Reading the reviews of the album, I see a lot people don’t like “Get It Over With.” Sorry, that song is BRILLIANT. Here are my top 5 in order:

    1. Love Without Tragedy-Mother Mary – Sick! Beautiful!
    2. Get it Over With – Ethereal greatness. I LOVE stripped down Rihanna.
    3. Diamonds- You already know.
    4. Loveeeee Song- Get.into.this.s***. Goes hard!
    5. Stay- Gorgeous

This is my second Rihanna purchase. The first was “Rated R.” I also enjoyed “TTT.”

I guess I like dark Rihanna best. I think this album will ultimately become my favorite. I just wish she would have left off that terrible “Right Now.” The only bad song on the album.

  91. Beyonce’s Weave November 19, 2012

    Rihanna

    Unapologetic

    Universal

    one star out of five

Tucked in the home stretch of her seventh album, Rihanna offers us the year’s most surreal moment.

Jaw-dropping in its cynical manipulation and hypocrisy, Nobody’s Business features the singer in a duet with Chris Brown, the restraining order after he used her face as a punching bag seemingly a distant memory.

It’s not a big surprise, since the two had collaborated earlier this year on a remix of Birthday Cake. Yet there’s something even more nauseating and sinister about this track, which is otherwise a pretty fair R&B smoker: its message. Incredibly, this second collaboration between abuser and victim is not just about letting bygones be bygones. What the two seem to want is for everyone to just mind their own business and leave them alone.

Seriously? If so, why make this demand on a no-doubt-platinum album? The not-so-hidden agenda of such self-mythologizing is to get people talking, listening and, of course, buying. This sanctimonious request for privacy comes off, paradoxically, as a publicity grab.

The rest of the album is pretty much the expected combo of tuneless dance-floor swill, Autotune assault, forgettable ballads and deeply dumb lyrics that celebrate little but partying, money and celebrity.

Unapologetic is more or less divided between an uptempo, surrender-to-the-beat first half and a more introspective, slower-paced second section. The David Guetta-produced opener Fresh Off the Runway, all robotic whomp and f-bomb shtick, quickly establishes a melody-free, pedestrian turf. Things become slightly more interesting with Numb, a decent duet with Eminem that takes a fatal turn with its wince-inducing, brain-dead words.

“I’m the b*** police, and I’m looking at your rear rear rear/But the odds are I’ma end up in the back of a squad car,” Eminem raps. Number of people sharing writing credits on the track: seven.

It’s a recurring problem as an army of writers and producers — including the Swedish team Stargate, The-Dream and Future — look for a cut of Rihanna’s inexplicable popularity and scramble to get their names on the disc. But there’s no doctoring this weak material.

For every tiny moment of hope — the oddly intriguing production on Jump or the decent first section of Love Without Tragedy/Mother Mary (in which Rihanna seems to be asking “Mr. Jesus” to help her with those world domination plans) — there are too many spirit crushers like the clubby cliché Right Now, the instantly unmemorable slow-tempo duet Stay, featuring Mikky Ekko, and the aptly-titled Get It Over With.

In the end, there’s little here but look-at-me hype and factory-made, soulless product. With this disc, Rihanna most clearly defines herself as a triumph of marketing.

Trying to compare Rihanna to Beyonce is like comparing Apples and Oranges. their voices are different, they do different types of music and speak about different things. just because Rihanna’s voice is not considered to be as strong as Beyonce’s doesn’t mean Rihanna can’t sing

Her voice is different. Macy Gray is not on the same level with Whitney Houston back in her day. India Arie is not Anita Baker or Mary J. Blige and Brandy is not synonimous with Monica so there is no reason to compare them. just because none of the women mentioned do not sound alike does not mean that Macy, India, or Brandy can’t sing.

Asb someone who isnt a Rihanna fan i was looking forward to the album after the song Diamonds which grabbed me, but i have to say that i was again dissapointed. Rihannas image and antic take centre stage again to what i find another lackluster album that is more or less of the same vein as TTT but littered with unessary swear words. The album does have its highlights, the fantastic “Nobodys Business” that really has nothing to do with Rihanna or Chris but more the retro sound and essance of Michael Jackson that carries the song and its basic lyrics through 3.36 seconds, apart from this the other highlights are stay, half of me and the song Diamonds which shows a more mature Rihanna album rides along pretty much like the others.

This is what confuses me: All these Rihanna haters, and yet they are lined up to listen to her new material. o_O

Say what you want, Rihanna continues to play with her sound. Her experimentation is creative. She refuses to get comfortable with a particular sound. When I listen to the album, I feel like I’m listening to all her albums at once.

Her voice is so interesting to listen to. She isn’t a Gladys Knight or Patti Labelle, but she doesn’t claim to be. I listen to her voice for its obvious and unique difference. In the midst of similar sounds & voices…..I look to Rihanna for being different & trendsetting.

    Reb’l Fleur indeed….

Execution: A+ (No one else could pull such a sporadic genre-sounding album….you see what happened to Christina A with Bioninc).

If you begin to name black female pop stars from the 1980’s
until now, you’ll be hard pressed to find more than a handful. That handful includes names such as Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston. And to be honest, the list doesn’t go much further than that. Of course there have been many black female artists in the past thirty years, but there are very few who have taken over top 40.

Why is this? There’s no science to it. I think it has more to do with marketing and image. For instance, when the world was first introduced to Whitney Houston she had the looks of America’s Sweetheart and the voice of a real diva. By hooking up with record industry legend Clive Davis, he managed to help her maintain a viable MTV presence as well as appearances on national shows that garnered attention from the mainstream media. When Houston peaked in the early 1990s, she was still seen as all-American and wholesome even though she married the troublesome Bobby Brown.

  102. Lax November 19, 2012

Janet Jackson also had the same innocence and appeal due to her following that was built from fans of her brothers (Jackson 5) as well as her own fans from her stints on shows like Fame and Good Times. By the time of her breakthrough album in 1986, Janet was seen as sassy and fun-loving but still relatively harmless. It wasn’t until her 1993 album, Janet that people finally saw her as a young woman with a deep and powerful sexuality. However, because of nearly a lifetime in public, she was still highly regarded.

  103. Lax November 19, 2012

And then there’s Beyonce who essentially picked up where Janet left off. She fronted the childhood group of friends that became Destiny’s Child and around 2003 launched the solo career which she is currently known for. Destiny’s Child was a powerful launching pad because of their girl-power anthems and sassy attitude. But due to frequent lineup changes and other issues, the group ultimately broke up. It was hoped that Beyonce would continue the legacy of the group’s female-empowered anthems, but she opted to go in a different direction.

  104. Lax November 19, 2012

Beyonce’s success has paved the way for more black females in pop, most notably Rihanna who inevitably drew comparison’s since she was signed by none other than Jay-Z at the tender age of 16. However, for all of Beyonce’s influence Rihanna’s musical style is more of a fusion of dance, pop, and reggae. But the comparisons remain nonetheless.

@BEY HIVE AND RIH’S MANY HATERS IF BEYONCE IS THE GUIDE POST FOR

Beyonce released Dangerously in Love in 2003 to rave reviews and multiple Grammy wins. It was hailed as one of the best solo debuts for a young artist in several years and Beyonce managed to stand out in an era filled with young singers leaving their groups in hope of solo success.

She set the standard and booty shake for the decade with her debut single, “Crazy in Love.” The go-go inspired beats and the electrifying video garnered a lot of acclaim. She followed that up with successful hit singles.

In 2006. she released her second album. The video for the first single,”Deja Vu” evoked images of Josephine Baker and the infamous banana skirt. Beyonce stated that she was paying homage to a fashion icon and trailblazer among African-Americans; she worked closely with Baker’s son even to capture the essence of the look.

Beyonce had managed to get away with that, but by the time of her third album, people weren’t hearing it. I Am.. Sasha Fierce garnered multiple Grammys, but that still didn’t silence Beyonce’s critics.

  107. Lax November 19, 2012

    @BEY HIVE, RIH’S HATERS,,,
“Single Ladies” was a movement in 2008. The dance, the look, all infiltrated pop culture at warp speed. However, it was not without controversy. The hand motions, especially gave way to the fact that Beyonce said she was inspired by the choreography of the legendary of Bob Fosse.

But no matter how many funny SNL parodies pop up, there were steal multiple controversies about that dance among others. While Beyonce continues to say she was inspired by the looks and performances of other icons, no doubt even performing with one of them. This question of stealing has now hit a peak in 2011.

Her follow-up videos, “Countdown” and “Love on Top” are also inspired by fellow iconic performances. One being a Belgian artist, another being 80’s boy band New Edition. While Beyonce continues to say it’s all an homage, the real question is where does the originality play in for her as an artist?

  110. Lax November 19, 2012

    @BEY HIVE, RIH’S HATERS
It’s one thing when a younger artist is inspired by an icon to the extent they mimic a look, a movement, or even a sound but it’s another thing when the movements and looks begin to mirror another artist than reveal a distinct persona.

  111. Lax November 19, 2012

    @BEY HIVE, RIH’S HATERS
Beyonce isn’t the only young superstar to face this issue, but others have overcome it. Other pop stars have had the same battles. Britney Spears faced the Madonna comparisons, but in her own right has now built her own pop empire. Usher and Justin Timberlake were both heavily compared to their idol, Michael Jackson but somehow managed to create their own sound while still being true to their influences. Justin Timberlake even re-wrote discarded tracks intended for Michael Jackson’s last studio album, Invincible, for his debut album. And while he faced criticism at first, he later reaped the rewards in the form of a few Grammys. Usher also has had massive success by experimenting with techno and dance music.

  112. Lax November 19, 2012

    @BEY HIVE, RIH’S HATERS
And while there is no real way to say what constitutes borrowing or stealing, there is something to be said for forging your own identity or style but almost ten years into being a solo artist, it’s hard to classify something that uniquely applies to Beyonce. Sure she has songs like “Single Ladies” and “Irreplaceable”, but those were written by other artists and collaborators. However, her other songs and videos even seem to resemble too much of artists’ past.

  113. Lax November 19, 2012

Run This Town” is a song by American rapper Jay-Z. The song also features Barbadian recording artist Rihanna and American rapper Kanye West. Often times folks in the blogosphere does things to try and
keep you pissed off but read, son , you will see that My Passion isn’t to make people love, like or support Rihanna its to let them know that Rihanna is a hard worker, shes selling albums and singles and for a young black artist Rihanna is at the top of her Game…

LAX. Madonna Has More Diversity in her music then Rihanna and so Does Janet Jackson, Janet’s Musical Resume Includes.
    R&B,Hip-Hop, Pop, Rock, Adult Contemporary,
House Music, Dance,Opera, Classical Rock, Neo-Soul infused with Hip-Hop, Jazz, she Rapped on her song Feedback. reggae she did with Elephant Man, Shaggy, and I forgot the reggae artist name but she did it with him. Etc the only thing she hasn’t done is Country, and Gospel this shows your ignorance in saying Janet Jackson is not diverse if you think Rihanna is more Diverse than Janet Jackson and Madonna then that’s your foolish train of thought but I greatly hollar Bull S*** Because this shows you just don’t know real music at all if you claim Rihanna has More Diversity then the Iconic, Legendary Greats of Madonna and Janet Jackson.

    • EzraJKnight November 20, 2012

Janet Jackson was featured wasn’t she? She can’t do reggae herself and neither can Madonna. Don’t act like you do not understand what he was saying. Rihanna can even make reggae a huge hit and I know most people do not like it. With that being said JAnet Jackson is also older than Rihanna so just give it time.

    • Lax November 22, 2012

@AJALA While I agree with you , and pleas allow Me to
add some things that Many sees about Rihanna that is
So similar, First of all WHEN MADONNA GOT OF TO a START MANY TRIED EVERY TRICK IN THE BOOK TO TRY AND TALK HER DOWN,,,,JUST LIKE THEY DO RIH,,,,

When they cursed Mag and said that she couldn’t shouldn’t
want Madonn went full steam Straight ahead and did it Her Way.,,,,Just like Rih..

When they said that MADONNA Vocals wasn’t the best she still never Backed down She kept it full steam ahead and still did it her way.

When the catholic church went after MADONNA, Mag Rebeled aganist them and still did it her way, Just like Rihanna…

So you see all of the similarities are there.

And when people call Rihanna every NASETY NAME in the Book Rihanna stays right on it,,,and when shes been called ho, s***, ugly, s****, or what ever names the Low LIFE’S CALLS HER Rihanna STILL STAY THE COURSE SNAG’S ANOTHER MAGAZINE COVER, AD, AND/OR
      ENDORSEMENT…

  122. commanderofthedancefloor November 20, 2012

I do not get why people constantly say that rihanna doesnt write anything yet she is on the writing credits for every song on the album except for three. If she did it to make her look like she wrote something the why isnt her name on every single song? exactly!!

Also who is to say what she wrote, unless an artist has the only name on the song then you do not know what they wrote and didnt but my point still stands that she wrote something.

    Now down to the album,
It is one of my personal favorites, its better than her last two albums, and right up there with gggb.
Fresh out the Runway 2/5 (i dont care for this song)
Diamonds 5/5 (one of the best in the album)
Numb 4/5 (i like this song it just gets a little repetitive)
Pour it up 1/5 (ghetto i do not care for it)
Loveeee song 3/5 (its a good song)
Jump 3/5 (this is my new s** song, i like the throw back to genuwine)
Right now 3/5 (my club song)
What now 5/5 (this needs to be a single)
Stay 5/5 (also needs to be a single)
Nobody’s business 5/5 (chris and rihanna tell you it aint your business, and i love it)
Love without tragedy 5/5 (love it i wish that it was a full song by itself
Mother mary 5/5 (love it also and it should of been a seperate song too)
No love allowed 5/5 (i loooovvveee this song had it on repeat all day)
Lost in paradise 5/5 (my favorite song, this needs to be the next single)
Half of me 5/5 (love it, also needs to be a single)

    Singles should go like this

    Diamonds
    Lost in Paradise
    Nobody’s Business
    Half of me
    Love Without Tragedy/Mother Mary
    No Love Allowed
    Numb
    What Now

    • zzzzg November 20, 2012

The haters have it in their imaginary minds that Rihanna contributes to nothing. They don’t understand that Rihanna is the mastermind behind all her projects. If Rihanna didn’t write the songs would not sound the way they do. Even the songs that she does not write is based on her life. She tells the writers how she feels and they put it in words. Rihanna is doing it and haters will just have to deal.

      • EzraJKnight November 20, 2012

Haters always come up with excuses to knock down her credibility as an artist. Saying she just lets the industry do things for her. From all of her promo videos and interviews she seems more in control of her own music than other artists out there.

  123. morgat November 20, 2012

It’s better than I expected. I love what now, love without tragedy, half of me, nobody’s business. These songs could have been on GGGB, the time I liked riri the most. Oh and stay! It’s so beautiful I had to cover it, check it out if you like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-iIZ2A1pY0&feature=plcp 🙂

  125. zzzzg November 20, 2012

@grape Really? Numb is your least favorite? It took Rihanna to bring the slim shady out of Eminem. I haven’t heard Eminem rap like that since Slim Shady LP. No other black female singer has done a track like this with Eminem. That is why people are saying they hate the song. They are jealous that Rihanna, a black female singer, has done a song with Eminem. I want to see them perform this. I would love to see them in the video with straitjackets. That would be epic.

  126. RICHANDBLACK11(JUST LIKE OBAMA AND BEY) November 20, 2012

  128. Ajala November 20, 2012

EzrajKnight or whatever you name is Janet and Madonna can do reggae on there own if they want to as feature artist or not but Rihanna didn’t even hit the big top until Umbrella hit the airwaves after many past up offers that The Dream whom try to pitch the song to Britney Spears and Mary J. Blige Rihanna decided to take it. Now let’s rewind for a second when Rihanna Came out with Pon Del a Replay What Happened It Flopped Then Came We Ride What Happen It Flopped Unfaithful Flopped SOS Flopped as well She Suffered the What I Call The Rita Ora Jay-Z trying to turn me into Beyonce Syndrome. Until She did Umbrella Now people are starting to take her seriously instead of looking at her as the fresh meat new kid on the block. To me deep down Good Girl Gone Bad Will Forever Be that classic album for her because of the work and quality that was put in that album and the reloaded version alone I’m not a Rihanna fan but I can definitely say she shitted on everybody when she came out that’s when the Real Rihanna Was born. Now with this every 6 months to a year album releases she’s starting to burn out because the business will not let her take a break a least when Madonna and Janet Jackson Including Michael Jackson And Prince They took a break in the 80’s and 90’s to regroup and create there craft and bring in quality music but at this point with Rihanna it’s more about Quantity then Quality. And that’s sad but on a good note When She Had Good Girl Gone Bad that was her best not only that she got more notoriety and even won her first Grammy. And Another thing Wasn’t Rihanna a Featured Artist on many of her biggest hits with other artist. Because Don’t come for Janet And Madonna when you know Rihanna Was a Featured Artist on many of those hits of hers and vice versa I’m not knocking her I’m just giving credit where credits due oh and another thing. Age shouldn’t matter because Madonna and Janet are still doing it big till this very day. That’s why they are legends and call one of the best in the business.
