Well the chorus sounds raspy in the actual song already anyways, so I think that was her intentions anyways. Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks etc all had harsher, throaty sounding voices. As well as the queen of blues, Billie Holiday. She was the furthest vocalist from today’s standard of a sweet, angelic, Whitney/Mariah/Aretha/etc sounding voices. Christina doesn’t always sing like that either bc she grew up with Whitney AND Billie
O and the fat jokes are getting so old for her and Mariah. Like if that’s all u can diss her with then she must be doing everything else right

On the chorus she sounds like she is straining to hit notes, and THAT straining makes her raspy… not her actual normal voice being raspy, like the singers you mention

There’s a big difference between having a raspy/rough sound and being strained/choked. Janis Joplin used a raspy sound as a choice, and she kept an open throat throughout. There are recordings of her singing broadway songs and her belting range is crystal clear, no raspy sound at all. Christina on the other hand, she can ONLY belt out with that choked/raspy ugly sound.
