‘Channel Orange’: Frank Ocean Named LGBT Hero Of The Year

Published: Saturday 29th Dec 2012 by David

Back in July, before the release of his ‘Channel Orange‘, Frank Ocean set the world alight when he opened up on a romantic experience he had shared with another man, and the heartbreak it had caused him.

Sharing the story in an open letter penned months before the album’s arrival, he soon found himself belabored with ‘labels’, despite the fact he did not ‘label’ himself.

Now, in honor of his bravery and the impact his honesty has had on Pop culture, he has now been named ‘LGBT Hero Of The Year’, alongside US President Barack Obama.

Full story below…

The Examiner explains:

“Today, CNN called Barack Obama and Frank Ocean the LGBT heroes of 2012.

Overall, it was a year when civil rights for gays and lesbians took on many new strides. With gay marriage being legalized everywhere and even our own president changing his position on gay rights, 2012 will be a year to remember. Let’s take a look at the three most important figures in LGBT rights this year.

Barack Obama

In 2011, many gay people were against Barack Obama. He seemed to be defending every type of minority, except gays and lesbians. However, last May, Obama finally conceded to the Land of Dorothy and proclaimed he was for gay marriage. Conservatives knocked him and said this move would cost him the election in November. Not only did Obama win the election, but he won it by an electoral landslide.

Frank Ocean

Traditionally, hip-hop music has been homophobic. Ten years ago, nobody thought that hip-hop’s hottest act, Frank Ocean, would openly admit that he is gay. Some people condemned Ocean’s decision to come out of the closet, but most people embraced his decision. To make matters better, Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange is up for 6 Grammy awards.”

    Lol!!

    • Secret Voice December 30, 2012

One thing I don’t get about Frank Ocean is why would he as a “gay man sing a song (Pyramids) that seems to mock Black women for not being queens like Cleopatra and yet he sleep with men” because that’s definitely not an ode to the Black Kings of ancient times….

  2. Amina December 29, 2012

    Good for him

  3. H** Sit Down December 29, 2012

    I cannot…. lmao

  4. Beyonce’s Bush December 29, 2012

I could care less who he puts his d*** in. He’s a real good writer and both the album and mixtape are fire!

  5. Beyonce’s Bush December 29, 2012

And why did you idiots exclude madonna? Is it because Bushy Bey and Riti Whoral would never have the cultural impact, success and respect that Legendonna has?

  6. the real xoxo December 29, 2012

if he was white this wouldnt be happening.
if the weekend came out as gay a year ago nobody would have batted an eye-lid.

  7. Hilly December 29, 2012

    Awesome!
Question: did you really have to put the Rita Ora?

  8. OH baby December 29, 2012

    LOOOOOOOOOOOL

  9. ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ December 29, 2012

Congratulations, I guess. Really though? Everyone is just bowing down to him recently and I wonder how long that’s going to last.

    • Francesca Ocean – Channel Rainbow out now December 29, 2012

They’re now bowing, they’re keeling and sucking him off with this overhype they’re giving him.

  10. Peter G December 29, 2012

Omfg, If there’s a way of fitting Rita Ora in almost every article, it will happen! Are Roc Nation still paying you to promote this flop? They should know that they’re just wasting their money because everyone already knows who she is but still they don’t care! Anyways good for Obama and Ocean.

  11. Monstarebel December 29, 2012

has he even performed at any gay pride events? ?

  12. LILO December 29, 2012

Overrated and overhyped. Stop acting like Frank slayed the scene and proved some kind of “point”. Critically he’s lauded simply because its become fashionable to coddle gays, but commercially his album is languishing like the rest.

  13. DOSSOME December 29, 2012

    Obama did it for votes
    Ocean did it for sales

    Both Won….i guess
As a straight man,i wish to congratulate Ocean and Obama for being smart and cashing in on the LGBT movement

    • ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ December 29, 2012

I thought you were a female lol…….sorry about that.

      • DOSSOME December 30, 2012

  16. SLAYRIAH CAREY December 29, 2012

Lol. Rita Ora ? I won’t even go there.
Anyways, congrats to frank and Obama.

  17. Shawn242 December 29, 2012

Congratulations Francine!!!!! You overrated bottom. Tell yo boo Kanye, TGJ said Hi. GET MONEY B****

  18. Francesca Ocean – Channel Rainbow out now December 29, 2012

This just shows that they’ll give awards for anything. Frank “gay for pay” Ocean has done nothing for the gay community, let alone the Black gay community.
There are Brother clicking, twisting, twerking and sashaying their message across town and all Frank did was kinda say he was bi-sexual.
This is a spit in the face for all the real people fighting the cause who are gay or not

  19. Fierce P**** December 29, 2012

He’s not like that gay. He’s bi but at least he had the courage to come out and say it.
    When a girl is bi: it’s s***
When a guy is bi: it’s nasty and wrong
When need to stop double standards.

  20. Dane December 29, 2012

Some people wake up with a negative spirit. Life can’t be that serious and if it’s seek a therapist!.

  21. wrinkle flop ora December 29, 2012

Gay this and gay that. But, he is a singer – that is his job. How many copies did his album sell? How many top 10 hits and number 1 singles? Has he even outsold Bruno mars debut and 2nd album? Has he even outsold any chris brown LP ( considering he was meant to be hyped like the second coiming of christ, and we were suppose to worship HIM )

The answer is no! All that gay and is did not pay off in his career. I expected him to at least outsell Bruno mars. Oh well, guess it is true: YOU CAN’T MOCK GOD.

    • wrinkle flop ora December 29, 2012

As long as their is god in Heaven……this man will never have a successful career. When u go out of your way to sin against god with pride…..do not think god will just sit there an d bless you. You can be the most talented singer on earth, but god choses not to make a way for YOU – NOTHING CAN CHANGE THAT.

  22. wrinkle flop ora December 29, 2012

Where were the white gay community for him? The ones who buy Kylie mInogue. Madonna and Gaga? How comes they never threw their dollars and made him happen? You can’t mock god!

  23. wrinkle flop ora December 29, 2012

Had he of been a normal god fearing black man, with a hot chick on his arm. He would of outsold Bruno mars, usher and Chris brown. Even all teh rappers. But because he made the choice TO DEFY THE WORD OF GOD…………………

  24. wrinkle flop ora December 29, 2012

Unlike other gay…he does not even look happy or content. He looks far more miserable than Adam lambert. WHY? As black man from teh south, he was raised Christian by his mom. I am sure his southern black momma would of been praying and going to church. It is rare to find a black atheist – especially in the south.

HE KNOWS HE IS SINNING AND THE GUILT IS F****** UP from the inside out. He knows his fate too: sinners WILL NOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD. That is why he not happy.

am gonna print this here, cos I know you are dying right now.

Rihanna is gonna flood the airways to block out beyonce. Pour it up and Righht now have been sento Kiss FM radio. Pour it up is now at number 10 billboard bubbling under chart. And vevo have certified 100% russina roulette as having 100 million views.

LOL LOL that beyonce comeback just got even more harder. Where is her single?

    • wrinkle flop ora December 29, 2012

I expect you to do an article about Rihanna flooding the airways with an arsenal songs to block beyonce comeback. Rihanna is gonna her revenge on beyonce once and for all. That rita ora plan will be the death of beyonce career.

  26. CHUDDS December 29, 2012

He is BORING! He has no stage presence, no umph, no charisma, no spark, no NOTHING! Miguel is much better, in my opinion. He’s no savior to the gay community. Get the f*** outta here!

  27. S****** Blonde December 29, 2012

What about Anderson Cooper and Matt Bomer?, they really are a good example of great LGBT people, i don’t get the hype with this guy, not with his music or his sexuality.

    • ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ December 29, 2012

I love the silver fox aka Anderson Cooper, even though he’s filthy rich he’s one of the most humble individuals in the business.

      • S****** Blonde December 29, 2012

Yep, i met him at the MDNA concert and he was making jokes all the time in the triangle, he sparkles.

  28. wrinkle flop ora December 29, 2012

I have noticed, since obama came along, they are trying to forces gay on to the black community. First, Obama comes out for it, then all tehse rappers start singing how much they love gays, then the NAACP comes out, then rev jacksons says he will perform gay marraige, then frank ocean is hail as god, then gallup poll said blacks are more likely to be gay and transgender, then black colleges want to start teaching gay lifestyle instead of maths and sciences, then obama, hilary and UK PM start blackmailing african countries, that if they do not make african gay, they will cut foreign aid ( proud to say that no african country gave in to the threat ) .

What is the real agenda and why is linked with the first and only black president?

I have read that Obama is meant to be gay and got his connections on the Chicago bathouse scene. Ther eis a link with this force of gay on the black community and obama. This was not going on under bush.

    • ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ December 29, 2012

      Sybil, shut the f*** up.

    • DeuceCAJS December 29, 2012

I would normally just dismiss WRINKLE FLOP ORA as just a moron who’s possibly retarded, based on her remedial writing style and Special Ed.-like grammatical flubs, but she’s not even that special. WFO trolls for attention on here because virtually no one in her life notices her or cares. Her parents clearly weren’t interested in even pretending and ultimately failed her. She embodies the words “neglected” and “forsaken.” Those who don’t mock, ridicule or make fun of her instead just ignore her and treat her like she doesn’t matter. These psychotic jabber posts she throws out here at TGJ is just her way of crying out to be seen, while simultaneously lashing out at the world that doesn’t value her being. On the one hand, you almost want to have empathy for someone this pitiful and empty. On the other, not really. People choose to be losers. This wasn’t a fate that was just dealt to her. So it’s her fault.

WFO, if you’re over the age of 18, you are in trouble. This is it for you. Everything that made you a loser is I’m afraid going to stick. It’s NOT gonna get better. You may wanna think about that the next time you see a blade in the same vicinity as your wrist.

      • wrinkle flop ora December 29, 2012

I have touched you! Now i HAVE YOUR ATTENTION, give your life to christ – before it is too late. Do not kill yourself, s****** is a sin and you will burn in hell. This gay lifestyle you have chosen WILL PAY IT’S PRICE. In this life or the next.

      • wrinkle flop ora December 29, 2012

As long as there is a god in heaven………..you are still going to pay for your sin. You better repent. NOW!

  29. JOHNVIDAL December 29, 2012

Damn some people still pressed at a person cos he is bi… pathetic
Except for @s****** who has nothing against gay people (he just doesn´t like Frank´s music) the rest constantly complaining on Frank´s post are homophobic trolls. You just need to read the words and insults they use.
The thing some people say about the publicity stunt is just an excuse. You hate gays and that´s it. Even if it was a publicity stunt… it was ONE. How many publicity stunts have all your faves been famous for??? SEVERAL. Each and every one of our faves. Don´t get me started…

    • S****** Blonde December 29, 2012

How many publicity stunts have all your faves been famous for??? SEVERAL. Each and every one of our faves.

      True tea.

    • Touché December 29, 2012

I think every celebrity is entitled to at least one publicity stunt.

      • Belladonna December 29, 2012

Congrats to him! Showing people you can be at the Top and be a Q**** person of color…. Or at least Really Really Famous the world over. Lol

Oh please REALLY? What type of “fuckery” is this? Oh right yet another weapon to be used against the BLACK Hip Hop community. I’ve yet to see the Country Music folks be slammed for it’s CONSERVATIVE LONG-TERM VIEWS of “Family values”.
