Gwen Stefani On Solo Career: “I Was A Pretend Version Of Myself”

Published: Saturday 29th Dec 2012 by David

For many, Gwen Stefani’s short lived but well spent solo career marks one of Pop’s best eras to date.

Spawning two solo albums outside of ‘No Doubt‘, her time at the top saw her stand tall as one of her genre’s more talented it girls, inspiring the likes of Lady GaGa (see last scene of ‘Love Game‘ video) and Nicki Minaj (see Harajuku Barbie).

However, this month has seen Stefani question the authenticity of her run, in an interview with Spanish Vogue.

She explained:

“I did the solo thing, but I felt like I was trying to play a character in a way, this Alice in Wonderland pretend version of myself. But this, being in No Doubt, is really who I am.”

If Gwen does decide to go solo again, we’d put good money the album being just as well received as her first two and some of today’s highest sellers.

Of course, though her comments would indicate she’s ‘over’ with the style and themes that made her so exciting, we could see her dominate many a chart with an easy listening, ‘summer in California’ type Pop piece. Wishful thinking? Maybe- but with the below still as moving today as it was ‘back then’, we see no reason for Gwen not to give the solo thing at least one more shot.

  3. DOSSOME December 29, 2012

Oh,so she was pretending all the while slaying 2 consecutive eras????okay at least she didn’t hijack No Doubt’s sound posing it as her own then leaving the other members to fend for themselves like some other artists i won’t mention

smh she really doesnt realise the impact of her solo career. not only did she influence her peers at the time (fergie’s entire debut album)… she birthed a new generation… soo many things gaga, nicki, katy perry are doing are all from her… gwen stefani was an original and she doesnt even know it. all these all other girls do now is copy and paste

” marks one of Pop’s best eras to date”
Damn… TGJ always exaggerating. It was great, she was original and all that, but I don´t think many people around the globe consider Gwen Stefani as a memorable time in pop history, don´t you think?
If No Doubt has not done too good with the return, I don´t think she would do it solo either. I would not flop on Nelly Furtado´s level but you know… Even Fergie (who has been on the map with her group recently) would kind of flop. Her music was not amazing and those type of things only happen once (I´m talking about Fergie now)
Also, I don´t even know if that Gwen´s second album had any success? I don´t remember it. I remember “What you´re waiting for”, Hollaback Girl and those singles, but nothing about a second album

Like she is explaining she is better with no Doubt now. Their last album had some good songs, a couple of them I had them in constant replay

Pretending or not, she has released two awesome albums. So i don’t even care. It’s like Justin Timberlake, 2 great albums and goodbye.
I’m going to watch all her videos on YouTube now!

im actually listening to bubble pop electric rn
but i think shes lying tbh, she wanna be in no doubt cuz she want that indian ex lover’s d***

  12. LILO December 29, 2012

It’s a shame she feels that way because I preferred solo Gwen to No Doubt. Just seems like a downgrade/regression that she would trade what was a successful solo career to return to a band that has long since peaked. ND isn’t gonna score any more hits like they did in the late 90s and very early 00s. This latest album pretty much proves that. Thier time has come and gone. Shrugs. Oh well…

You sound like a 12 year old. Of coarse you don’t think highly of no doubt; you weren’t around to hear them when they first made it because then you would know why no matter how well or bad their album does, they were groundbreaking artists ( when that word used to mean something) and will go down in history for the great things they’ve done for music.

  13. Archie December 29, 2012

wow!all that good music was out pretense?Gwen Stephanie should go back to pretending

  14. Fierce P**** December 29, 2012

To that commenter I dont understand the similarities between her and Fergie. Beyonce did not hijack any sound from DC. She sang lead vocals all the time so it’s inevitable her voice would sooner or later be the star voice. I loved Gwen and yeah lady gaga did kinda take her style in 08. I loved Gwen’s funky like pop music. I liked no doubt but Gwen has great star power all by herself.

  15. S****** Blonde December 29, 2012

I understand her, i think she could have a wonferful career as a solo artist but she’s at her best with No Doubt + she has always said that if she won’t be as bigger as Madonna, she don’t want a solo career.

    • S****** Blonde December 29, 2012

      I mean wonderful oops!.

  16. Touché December 29, 2012

I loved Gwen ever since her No doubt days but I see what she means. She was a lot better and more sincere when she was in No doubt but her solo days were still good just not as great.

  17. Jer December 29, 2012

Omg please get off her d***. You are such an obvious and basic queen Samantha. Your faves are so obvious and those you are jealous of are even more obvious. Youve been clocked so many times open a damn antique shop ho

Why the hell would you want her to go solo again? No Doubt’s music is so much better, and she’s happier now. Why would you want her to fake it? I just don’t get it.
