Pepsi Pour More Details On Beyonce Collaboration

Published: Monday 10th Dec 2012 by Sam

Beyonce started this week off with a bombastic bang – thanks largely to Pepsi.

The drinks giant announced a multi-million/multi-year partnership with the superstar, which kicks off early next year to coincide with the release of 31 year old’s hotly anticipated new album.

Now, in an intriguing new interview with Billboard Biz, Pepsi – by way of Global Chief Marketing Officer Frank Cooper – outline the intricate details of their pairing with the ‘Single Ladies’ singer – one, they say, is aimed at ensuring her 5th album is “the most successful global album that she’s ever done”.

A lengthy, yet insightful read awaits after the jump…

Via Billboard Biz:

Billboard: You just announced a renewed and expanded partnership with Beyonce that will include multiple creative projects in addition to traditional advertising. When did the conversations with Beyonce and her team first start?

Frank Cooper: It started in late summer of this year, and it really started around this idea we had around an artist that we thought had true global reach. Someone who really had a strong fan base in multiple territories around the world whose values align with ours – this idea of being positive and living in the now. And then we were looking for an artist that also wanted to have a true partnership, not simply looking for the most compensation in pocket. It’s about how to build content for their fans and consumers, and that led us straight to Beyonce. We started sketching out a deal and teasing ideas out, and here we are.

Pepsi had already been confirmed as the Super Bowl Halftime Show’s presenting sponsor, so did you help secure Beyonce as the performer as part of this deal?

It was a part of the conversation but it wasn’t the emphasis. We talked about Super Bowl Halftime and how Beyonce and Pepsi might collaborate together on content. That was definitely part if it, but only one piece of it.

So how might this creative partnership manifest itself – what types of projects are you working on with Beyonce?

We’re still in the idea-development phase, but the types of things we’re talking about are creating original episodic content together. Where Beyonce may be in front of the camera but may be behind the camera. We’re talking about for live events where we might play a role in creating additional engagement experiences for fans using technology or building interactions with fans that we think we can contribute from the Pepsi side. And then of course we’re thinking about collaborating on events together, live events that we think can be an interesting way to display something Beyonce wants to do and something we want to do.

Beyonce is also prepping a fifth album that might also be ready as early as first quarter. Have you been meeting with the team at Columbia to talk about ways you can help promote the project?

We’ve had a couple meetings with Columbia, including one big meeting with all hands on deck, mostly to talk about how we can all work together to make sure we contribute to the album in a way to make it the most successful global album that she’s ever done. They’re definitely at the table with us.

Have you begun conceptualizing ideas for your next TV commercial with Beyonce, and which ad agencies will you be working with?

We have a concept for that spot, which hasn’t been shot yet, so we’re still in the early stages on that. We took a team approach with agencies for Beyonce, and as part of the team we have 180 Los Angeles, TBWA\Chiat\Day Los Angeles, Organic for digital and Safari Sundays for design experiential. What we decided was that the best way to handle this project was to have a cross-disciplinary team together. We don’t care where those ideas come from when we execute it.

Beyonce is known for being extremely hands-on in the creative process, even getting final cut on all of her videos and documentary footage. How did you feel about relinquishing some of that control?

Part of the reason why we thought she was the right partner was not only because she’s so discerning, but because she’s proven herself in each of those areas, from photography to audiovisual material. What we’ve decided is these are joint efforts — neither one of us is going to run out and create something the other isn’t going to want. We’re looking at mutual approval.

She’s also been filming a documentary for HBO leading up to the Super Bowl. Might some of your negotiations be a part of that project?

We were sitting in a meeting with about 20 people and Lee Anne [Callahan-Longo, Beyonce’s business manager at Parkwood Entertainment] and Jim [Sabey] said, “Bring the cameras in! Let’s make sure we capture this time.’ And the cameras were rolling. It was this fascinating, reality-star moment where you forget the cameras are on after awhile.

***********

Both fascinating and titillating. It’s clear Hurricane Beyonce is set to sweep through in a major way.

OMG.. First time reading this blog smdh lmfao.. I’m not a fan of Beyonce. I seriously don’t see the magic or legendary status thats behind her. But one thing I can say she will market herself as much as she can. She trying to get that Michael Jackson type of fame where the media hounds her every waking moment but it will never happen like she fully wants it too. I have to agree she is fading a little. Her stuff isn’t as interesting when she first came out solo. Even her album sales are dropping each album she puts out. Its just all the same. Im not a big fan of Rihanna either but If Rihanna plays it smart and puts out Pour it Up, Jump, Numb, Loveeee Song, Fresh off the Runway, No Love Allowed one by one with some cool videos marketing the hell out of it like she did with diamonds between I say the end of Dec until March or April ehh it’ll outshine Beyonce.. *shrugs* But I wish her good luck..

        here, here
Rihanna’s songs are too damn ghetto and juvenile for her to become bigger than what she is or even bigger than Beyonce. Beyonce is at a high ass level because SHE’S A TRUE PERFORMER. From the amazingly strong vocals, to the speedy dancing, and also the incredibly talented band, she has it all!

      • TinaMinaj December 11, 2012

LMAO!!! This Rihanna STAN must take us for fools! You’re not a fan of Rihanna but know all her songs from a barely 2 week old album and know what she should release to “outshine Beyonce”???? Loooool!!!

      • realest December 12, 2012

I think what everyone is forgetting is that Beyonce is coming back from a lot of post pregnancy hype. The revelation of her pregancy at the 2011 VMAs and coming back from that has everyone sitting on the edge of their seats because the burning question is ‘Does she still have it after having birth and being away for nearly 2 years?’ The public is dying to eat up whatever she puts out because of this fact. Blue Ivy did a lot for her career simply because of the hype surrounding it. This byfar may be her best selling album because of the anticipation factor.

nothing against Rih but Bey wouldn’t have another FEMALE singer who isn’t NEARLY close to her level (vocally) be featured on one of her songs…besides, it wouldn’t look or feel right…

Beyonce signed her first endorsement deal with Pepsi in 2002 which was quickly followed by deals with L’Oreal, American Express, Samsung, Ford and DirectTV. She has launched a number of fragrances over the years, and recently signed a $20 million three year deal to develop a signature fragrance for Coty. And don’t forget the fashion line, Dereon, that she launched with her mom Tina. Beyonce’s best business deal to date has been her marriage to Shawn Carter, better known as Jay-Z, the hip hop artist, producer, co-owner of the NJ Nets and multi-millionaire entrepreneur.

I have no ill feelings towards Bey, but if this album doesn’t smash–and I have a feeling it won’t perform up to expectations, not being a hater, just realistic, given the current musical climate–well, I don’t think she can afford 2 underperforming albums in a row, even if she IS Beyonce.

    • ƸӜƷ MC ƸӜƷ December 10, 2012

Especially when he just said they want this to be her biggest era (outperforming DIL and IASF).

    • Flop Cheeta Whora gave Rob an S** from her 20 guys December 10, 2012

Sony know this, that is why she has to t 360 deal with Pepsi. She will be on their label.

      • Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave) December 10, 2012

LOL, Exactly, Pepsi has her by the titties, that is a deal worth $50 million USD, she is not getting $50 million USD in cash from Pepsi. I don’t get why people do not understand this part.

      • TheOneAndOnly December 11, 2012

Sigh…obviously you girls didn’t pay attention in economics class…Have a seat and let me school you really quickly..

Just because the money isn’t going into her pocket, does not mean that the $50 million isn’t going towards her repertoire. And mark my words, Forbes WiILL be adding this $50 million to her earnings for their 2013 year end list because it is money earned, no matter how it is saved or spent.

SECONDLY, you girls must not have taken into consideration the amount of money she will be reaping in from the ads, videos, tour, and merchandise. Especially because she will have 50% creative control on EVERY SINGLE PROJECT. All at the expense of Pepsi, instead of coming from the $775 MILLION she and her husband already has sitting in the bank.

I hope y’all took notes, because I will not be repeating myself. Good Day.

      • keyzz December 10, 2012

WTF are u talking about 200k.. 4 first week was 300k+ have a f***** seat!

      • s*** January 2, 2013

You got that right, just like all the promotion she did for her last album that flopped!!! Did her stans forget that?! Now she wants to ride on Frank Ocean’s band wagon, she wants his songs, why doesn’t she write her own? Because her music is whack, childish and ghetto!!! Can’t wait till it flops… hahahahaha!!

    • lola December 11, 2012

      OK,
I don’t think that this album will underperform. Reason being is because she has good producers and songwriters such as Hit Boy, Miguel, Justin Timberlink, Teddy, Ne-Yo and more to be announced helping with the creative process. Also, she’s learned from her mistakes. 4 flopped because it was mainly an old school, R&B record, but 2 million for an R&B album is actually not bad. I believe she will always go platinum in the US no matter what, but she probably will have a more mainstream and signature sound this time around; Pepsi will make sure of that since they are investing 50 million dollars in her project.

LOL 4 did not sell anything near to 3 million albums, it sold 2.5 million and dropped out of all the charts all over the world. This is why Columbia doesn’t want to fund the album, this is why Columbia got Pepsi to lock Beyonce into a $50 million dollar 360 contract which includes Pepsi paying for the album.

You can see why Colombia are pissed with Jay and Bey. Beyonce tricks Sony into signing ROC NATION under their wing, and flop nation have burned money and produced not a single hit. Only person album came this year on flop nation – and that flopped. Then 4 was a huge promo: VHI docu, french xfactor, another french Tv show, Fashion magas, Billboard michelle obama speech BS, Good morning America, target deal etc. Her fake and for what? for all of rihs albums to outsell 4.

And with adele, this time, Sony were not got give her this a LIST budget. So, she had to do a 360 with pepsi. When this album flop, she will leave Sony. Sony cannot market her anymor, the whole RNB diva thing is finished and she has not other musical talents.

    • @_NoFucksGiven_1 December 10, 2012

Beyonce is fat and looks The same age as Lisa Ray.e That us not a 31 year old. No f****** wayl. She is 40 and you know it. Beyonce, I read the interview at Billboard. You are a non mother f****** factor at Sony, Adele killed your s***, Now Colombia know you are past your prime, They refused your A list budget. You had do a 360 deal and pimp your ass to the highest bidder. Colombia take Pepsi calls, that is the only way how you get the meetings. Colombia know u are over, that is why they are letting Pepsi pay to make your flop album and expensive marketing. Pepsi don’t give a s*** if your albums sales, they using you to sell there drinks They do not give a f*** where u chart on itunes, this is just product placement for them. What’s up? Colombia were pissed than your and Riat whora burned tens of millions of flop albums? Sony have seen a younger black girl on rival label, label not even as big as Sony, she s*** of over you WW.

U might as well leave Sony, when this LP flops. Maybe you can sign to pepsi.

LOL LOL LOL HAD BEG PEPSI TO FUND HER LP AND PROMO. B****, you are gonna more than $50 to beat rih, U need a BILLIONAIRE TO TAKE OUT RIH.

  21. RoyalKev December 10, 2012

This is why I find Beyonce so fascinating. She’s so hands on and she knows precisely what she wants, yet she seems humble enough to have an equal partnership with. She doesn’t have an ego when it comes to creative control. She obviously believe in making it a group effort when it comes down to the vision and what she delivers. That’s when great things happen. I really feel like this era will be something special because everyone involved seems to have a team spirit! Beyonce has that perfect balance to her personality. She let people bring something to the table, but she’s knows when to stand at the head of it!

      • Lax December 11, 2012

        @BEY HIVE,,,
I always notice how the Bey Fans always praise B to high heaven and RIGHTFULLY SO, But i also notice how no one is calling B ILLIUNATI DEMON s*** dah, dah, dah,and all those NEGATIVE names Rih often get from the Hive , and this is simply amazing.
For all of the Names that Rih get called and the slanderous slander it’s amazing to see Rih still standing aganist all odds.

        PS
It also CROSSED my mind how Rih had that 25million deal with Nivea and they didn’t renew Her Contract, oh well all is well that ends well, good for B & Jay Though
because after all I am Reminded that B and J sets the Rules In the Game, and any one would be hard pressed to not see the Wonderful things Jay and B have bought to the world of Entertainment, I told Yall that Jay knows what He’s doing , Look at where Rihanna has come from and made it too in 7 years!!!Roc Nation is a Team over there, and is you don’t believe me then ask Solange!!!!

  25. Bey Fan December 10, 2012

So based off what some of yall Ri fans just read, yall are drawing the conclusion that she should sell a million copies her first week??? What about this read indicated that?

    You ppl kill me…. smh

Anyway, cant wait for MY BEY to hit the stage…. we ready….

    • boopboop December 10, 2012

yes cuz all of the $$$ poured into this and it said in the article they want it “the most successful global album that she’s ever done”

so…for it be MOST SUCESSFUL it NEED to sell a mil copies 1st wk! anything under 500k would be a FLOP and even 5-600k wouldnt be that great with all the $$$ they spent!

she will be lucky to sell 200k. VERY RARELY do artists sell MORE on thier later releases esp if they start out with HIGH NUMBERS to being with! if you start out HIGH you usually GET LOWER WITH EACH RELEASE!

      • Gilberto December 10, 2012

“for it be MOST SUCESSFUL it NEED to sell a mil copies 1st wk!”
Sorry, b****. YOU are the one saying that not Pepsi, Columbia or Beyoncé. How are you to say how much Beyoncé needs to sell? You should spend your energy into R******, her album is falling like rock everywhere. She even needed to promoted it on X-Factor again because her wacky album was already almost out of the top 10 after a few weeks of its release. LOL. Pathetic!

    • Gilberto December 10, 2012

They’re delusional as f***. They’re so pathetic to say that Beyoncé needs to see this or that when their fave struggle to sell Platinum. She only archived her first #1 album after 6 tries and with very lacklustering sales… even 4 outsold it. Top top it off, she has 5 flop albums. LOL.
Taylor Swift only sold 1 million ’cause her deal with Papa John’s Pizza which sold her album for $7 (50% off) if you ordered a large topping pizza. Gaga only sold 1 million because her 99 cents deal.

  26. boopboop December 10, 2012

too bad bb changerd thier rules…id suggest bey sell her album for 1 cent to get a mil copies 1st wk but bb dont count albums under 3.99…BUT dont be surprised if she DOES pull a gaga and HEAVILY DISCOUNT her s*** to get more ppl to buy!

    • Gilberto December 10, 2012

Don’t you remember when R****** sold Rated Flop for 99 cents during the Black Friday week? I DO, b****. LOL. It failed to sell 200k. So why are you concerned about Beyoncé’s first week sales? LOL.

      • JACKSON360 December 10, 2012

Don’t forget this past summer Def Jam marked TTT down to like $5 because they knew it wouldn’t go platinum at the rate it was selling full price.

      • Gilberto December 10, 2012

        @JACKSON360
I remember Talk That Flop was marked to $4 after two~three weeks of its release in US because the album was out of the top 10. FLOP. Don’t forget that TTT is available for £3 in UK supermarkets. LOL. FLOP.

    • TinaMinaj December 11, 2012

This is all causing Sybil/Lax/Kelly’s head to explode, she’s gonna need a bigger dosage of Ritalin and tighter latches on her strait jacket before the night is over…and I f****** lurve it!! Seethe b****, seethe! Are you trembling and experiencing palpitations from the bomb Beyonce and Pepsi are about to drop on Pearl Harbor (aka Rihanna.) I bet even Jay is pulling Bey aside and asking her to not mash on his client too hard! Reminding her that the chump change Rihanna brings into the Carter house is at least enough to keep Blu outfitted in bibs.

    LOL 😀 😀 😀

Like I said before, watching you burn up from jealously, angst and fear of Beyonce and this major and elitist promotional campaign that’s about to be unleashed in a few weeks and take the world hostage is equally as thrilling as King Bey herself. I know you’re ugly as f*** but I still wanna see the fear in your eyes over this, so go ahead and flash your hideous pic right quite. Just give me a sec to put on my shades first so your face doesn’t TOTALLY burn my own eyes! 😛 😛 😛

Yeah, Gaga is definitely worried that ‘Born This Way’ “only” sold 6 million. How much did Talk That Flop sell anyway? 3 million? LOL. FLOP! BTW sold more than any R******’s album to date, so have a seat and watch Beyoncé and Gaga’s show in 2013. You should try saving UnaFLOPogic, it’s already falling on the charts everywhere. It was rumored Beyoncé and Jay-Z would be making an appearance, but it proved reality as the power couple touched down in the sunshine state to hit a few parties and pose with some art pieces.
While Blue Ivy was clearly with a babysitter, Beyoncé instagrammed and tumbled her way through the weekend, posing with art at the convention center or showing off her killer updo.
Be sure not to miss cameos by Beyoncé’s mom, Tina, and former Destiny’s Child bandmate, Kelly Rowland.

And, while fans have high expectations for B’s highly anticipated 2013 album release, Ne-Yo is working overtime to make sure he gives fans what they are waiting for. He added, “Who knows? Maybe we’ll get another ‘Irreplaceable’ out of the batch. You never know.”

In addition to Ne-Yo, Beyoncé has also hit the studio with the likes on Jay-Z, The-Dream and Miguel. “I’m excited to hear the direction of her new material, and hopefully come up with something that’s really special and really showcases her perspective,” the Grammy-nominated Miguel told MTV News earlier this fall. She has also been rumored to be recording with Justin Timberlake; though that remains a rumor and pop music lover’s dream.

The-Dream previously teased that something new from Beyoncé might drop by February, timed to her performance at the Super Bowl in New Orleans. “She’s already gearing up to get ready to put stuff out,” he said. “I’m sure there will probably be a couple records you hear before the Super Bowl gets here.”

While fans have yet to hear those new tracks, two images from her partnership with Pepsi (the folks who sponsor the Super Bowl halftime show) have been released. One image features a kissy-faced Beyoncé pushing a shopping cart full of the soda pop, while the other is a close-up of the singer. The latter will appear on her very own line of limited-edition soda cans. The deal is reportedly worth $50,000,000. She will also star in a commercial for the soft drink brand.

“Pepsi embraces creativity and understands that artists evolve,” Beyoncé says of the new collaboration. “As a businesswoman, this allows me to work with a lifestyle brand with no compromise and without sacrificing my creativity.”

Additionally, Pepsi logos will display prominently on her 2013 tour. The company will also work to pick out local talent to play on stops during the trek.

      • zania December 11, 2012

Of course Jayz would get all the hottest artist and producers in the industry to collaborate with her, so she get do better on the charts this time. Miguel had several #1’s on the billboard chart, of course she is going to jump on his band wagon. She probably is trying hard to get a coll with Adele for hot 100 chart, she cannot do it herself anymore. She needs her money, her husband influence to get her all PR, and all the hottest artist, producers to help her sell her album. I guess she realize creating her own music didn’t work with 4, remember that she said that she was creating a new sound, which her album didn’t do well globally. She is walking in the shadows of Rihanna now.

It’s been SIX Years since Beyoncé dropped her kiss-off anthem, “Irreplaceable.” Full of swagger and that unforgettable hook, the track has since become a BeyHive fan favorite. Well, it seems that the Queen B will soon be hitting the studio with the man behind the tune, Ne-Yo, for her next album.

He confirmed the pairing on Friday to MTV News backstage at Jingle Ball in New York City. “I actually just spoke to her tonight about that before we got here,” he said several days ago about the upcoming studio meet-up. “So definitely going to get in some stuff with her.”

In an expansion of the recent marketing experiments that have brought PepsiCo ever closer to the music industry, the company has embarked on a hybrid project with Beyoncé that will include standard advertising like commercials as well as a multimillion-dollar fund to support the singer’s chosen creative projects.

“Pepsi embraces creativity and understands that artists evolve,” Beyoncé said in a statement. “As a businesswoman, this allows me to work with a lifestyle brand with no compromise and without sacrificing my creativity.”

The campaign will coincide with a blitz of promotion for her next album, which has no title or release date so far but is expected in 2013. Sometime after she performs at the Super Bowl halftime show on Feb. 3 (also sponsored by Pepsi), Beyoncé will appear in a new TV ad — her fifth for the soft drink since 2002 — and her face will be on a limited-edition line of soda cans.

The less conventional aspects of the deal are meant as collaborative projects that indulge Beyoncé’s creative whims, and might well have no explicit connection to Pepsi products. They are still at the brainstorm stage, but could include live events, videos, “a cool photo shoot” or almost anything else, said Lee Anne Callahan-Longo, the general manager of Parkwood Entertainment, Beyoncé’s company.

For Pepsi, the goal is to enhance its reputation with consumers by acting as something of an artistic patron instead of simply paying for celebrity endorsements.

“Consumers are seeking a much greater authenticity in marketing from the brands they love,” said Brad Jakeman, president of PepsiCo’s global beverage group. “It’s caused a shift in the way we think about deals with artists, from a transactional deal to a mutually beneficial collaboration.”

The multiyear campaign is estimated at $50 million, the bulk of it for media placements and promotions around the world, and the remainder split roughly equally between Beyoncé’s fee and what Pepsi calls a creative content development fund.

According to the tracking firm Kantar Media, PepsiCo and its archrival the Coca-Cola Company each spent about $148 million in the United States to advertise their soft drink brands in the first six months of 2012, across all measured forms of media, like television, print, digital and radio.

Over the last decade many consumer brands have been taking more active roles with artists, particularly in pop music. Converse, Red Bull and Toyota’s Scion line, for example, have become as familiar in the music business as any label or concert promoter by paying to help create and promulgate music.

Bands always risk fan disapproval when shaking hands with big corporations. But with record company budgets diminished, Madison Avenue money is often seen as essential. PepsiCo has been part of this trend through Green Label Sound, a label financed through its Mountain Dew drink, which over the last four years has paid to release free music by under-the-radar groups like Matt & Kim and the Cool Kids.

“We recognize that there have been massive disruptions in music industry: lower investment in artist development, fewer points of distribution, financial constraints,” said Frank Cooper, a top marketing executive in PepsiCo’s beverage division who has been a force for such projects. “We look at those disruptions as opportunities for Pepsi.”

These deals are not limited to music. In 2010, Jay-Z (Beyoncé’s husband) teamed with Microsoft to promote his memoir, “Decoded.” According to a case study led by Anita Elberse, a Harvard Business School professor, the publisher could contribute only $50,000 for marketing, but Microsoft paid $2 million for an elaborate scavenger hunt that promoted the book as well as its new search engine, Bing.

Beyonce,31, is recognised as a powerhouse across music, video and film.
She has won 16 Grammy awards and sold more than 100 million records to become one of the biggest stars in the world.
With her husband, music producer and rap star Jay-Z, they are the highest earning couple in show business with a joint annual income of over £50m.
The couple had their first child, Blue Ivy, last January.
Beyonce’s partnership with Pepsi will only serve to intensify the rivalry with Coca Cola as they attempt to increase their market share.
The two companies each spent close to £100m on advertising in the US markets in 2012 with competition for young consumers greater than eveR

  41. BEYSUS OVER JESUS December 10, 2012

The star and the soft drink giant have become “global partners,” it was announced today, in a multi-year deal that is designed to take the singer/actress beyond advertising.

We already know we’ll see Beyonce at the Pepsi Halftime Show of the Feb. 3 Super Bowl, but now, Pepsi President Brad Jakeman says this will offer her “multiple outlets to tap into in order to express her creativity.”

Pepsi also says to look for “the two brands to co-create cool online content.”

Planned for early 2013: Pepsi cans with Beyonce on them, and a new Live For Now TV commercial. It will be Beyonce’s fifth for the soft drink since 2002.

The New York Times notes that Beyonce may have gotten the big-deal idea from her hubby, Jay-Z, who partnered with Microsoft in 2010 to promote his book, Decoded.

The Times says the new Beyonce-Pepsi partnership is estimated to be a $50 million deal, with the bulk of it for media placements and promotions around the world, and the remainder split between Beyoncé’s fee and what Pepsi calls a creative content development fund.

    • I AM BLUE THE REAL HIVE December 10, 2012

Pepsi will sponsor the singer’s concert next year and as a brand ambassador she will star in a TV advert to be release in early 2013.
A crucial part of the deal will see Pepsi investing millions in other projects that Beyonce wants to support.
Lee Anne Callahan-Longo, general manager of Beyonci’s Parkwood Entertainment, said those collaborative projects could include live events, videos or “a cool photo shoot,” but are still at the early stages of development.
Pepsi chiefs said they want to be seen as sponsors of artists rather than just paying a celebrity for their endorsement.
‘Consumers are seeking a much greater authenticity in marketing from brands they love,’ said Brad Jakeman, president of Pepsi’s global beverage group.
‘It’s caused a shift in the way we think about deals with artists, from a transactional deal to mutually beneficial collaboration.’

  42. BEYSUS OVER JESUS December 10, 2012

You’ve seen Beyonce’s face on magazine covers, in music videos and in promos for the upcoming HBO documentary that tells the Beyonce story from the unique perspective of Beyonce. Now, finally, it will be possible to see Beyonce’s face on a can of Pepsi.

  43. BEYSUS OVER JESUS December 10, 2012

The New York Times has reported that Pepsi and Beyonce recently signed a $50 million deal that will yield additional soda commercials starring the mother of Blue Ivy as well as soda cans featuring her bright-pink lipsticked visage. But that is not all. According to the Times, the company “wants to get into the Beyonce business,” which means the beverage maker also plans to spend millions of dollars “to support the singer’s chosen creative projects.”

Translation: Beyonce has just received the equivalent of a MacArthur genius grant from a company that manufactures carbonated sugar-water.

As close trackers of the career of Queen “Halo” will recall, Beyonce has worked with Pepsi before. She has appeared in several of its commercials and also signed on to headline this year’s Pepsi-sponsored Super Bowl. But this “partnership” — which could fund a variety of Beyonce-related projects, including live events, videos or whatever creative endeavors Beyonce is in the mood to pursue on a given day — takes things to another level.

The Times piece asks whether this will be a savvy move for Pepsi, noting that other corporations who have entered into semi-similar, mutually beneficial relationships with artists may not always reap much benefit from it. I wonder whether this is a good move for Beyonce.

In a recent column, I argued that the pop megastar made a narcissistic but nevertheless smart move by moving forward with that aforementioned HBO documentary because it reinforces Beyonce’s brand as an in-control, self-made diva. But I am not sure this Pepsi marriage reinforces that same image. “Who run the world? Girls … with financial support from soda makers!”

Yeah, that doesn’t sound as good. And it may not sit well with fans who respect Beyonce’s moxie but don’t relish the idea of an artist they respect potentially selling out. Although maybe selling out isn’t even a concern anymore. Many consumers under the age of 35 can’t even remember a time when it was considered distasteful for a respected band to allow their song to appear in a national ad campaign. So a pop star on a Pepsi can may not even make anyone blink.

But an even greater risk for Beyonce might be overexposure. In the new year, she’ll be promoting a new album, performing during America’s most widely watched broadcast event, starring in her own movie and undoubtedly showing up in media story after media story.

If even the soda aisle does not provide a respite from Beyonce Mania, one has to wonder if Knowles Fatigue may begin to settle over a nation that has largely embraced Beyonce but may not be ready, just yet, to imbibe her.

    • I AM BLUE THE REAL HIVE December 10, 2012

While other well known figures, such as David Beckham and Jennifer Lopez, have been used in TV and magazine campaigns it is the first time that a celebrity’s face will adorn the drink.
The limited edition cans will be released in March and sold worldwide, including the UK.
The promotion will be kick started by Beyonce’s appearance in February during the half time show at the Super Bowl, the world’s most watched sports event with worldwide audience of over 500 million viewers.

Who are all these crazy people saying that beyonce is washed up, irrelevant and this is her last resort….WHAT PLANET ARE YOU ON.

Even if Beyonce released rubbish she will never flop as the 4 era has proved, (Run the World) she cant, its a physical impossibility, she has too larger fanbase her brand is held to too higher regard and she performs at too high profile events to flop. RTW although a moderate chart flop in most markets has sold more then 2 Million copies worldwide and EVERYONE knows the song you shout ‘Who Run The World’ to some randomer they are going to shout ‘Girls’ Back at you, its not all about chart impact its about overall impact and reach and Beyonce has the ability to REACH and this campaign just strengthens that her face is going to be in every supermarket, convenience store, department store, music shop and magazine stand in every city, town and village in the westernized world, with this campaign she’s literally going to be EVERYWHERE, Pepsi is one of the biggest brands in the world and out of everyone, GaGa, Rihanna, Justin, Britney, Katy they chose Beyonce who according to some of you is washed up? and yet she appears in almost every edition of every showbiz magazine in the world in some way shape or form in almost every issue. take The Metro for example the worlds biggest newspaper, I read it every morning on my way to work, she is in it EVERY DAY even though she hasn’t done anything since April. she is not irrelevant she will never be irrelevant.

She is not signing to a new label, Jay does not want to have the biggest record label, She is not worried about flopping, sony is not worried about Beyonce flopping or pissed off with Jay, Beyonce and Roc she is probably their BIGGEST artist. frankly I don’t know where these delusional people get half their b******* from

Who cares what the numbers are? she certainly doesn’t she’s worth over $350 Million she can do what she wants her album will go to #1 in the US even with or without a hit single, any single she releases top 10, top 20, top 40 people will hear and buy it. she could release an album called ‘Deep Breathing’ of literally just 11 recordings of her breathing and it would sell a Million copies.

the fact of the matter is Beyonce isn’t going anywhere and won’t be for the foreseeable future, as this campaign will only cements her further into pop culture.

Watch next year when she gets her second hollywood star ,17th Grammy and the MTV Video Vanguard Award, she is above this childish ‘I want a #1’ when Madonna/Mariah/Britney/P!nk release a record they don’t want a #1, they want to reach out to the world through they’re music and make people move and sing and be happy they’ve got their #1s, broken those records and if they happen (which they always do) to get a #1 along the way then it’s just a bonus, they’re still going to sell they’re millions either way.

She is selling worldwide, which makes her a huge international star. I would rather be in the history books as the top selling female, than trying to sell 300 first week and than drop off. RIHANNA, ENMINEN, BRITNEY SPEARS ARE THE ONLY ARTIST FROM THE LAST TEN YEARS THAT IS ON THE ALL TIME SELLING ARTIST WHICH RANK 80 MILLION AND HIGHER. NO ONE FROM RIHANNA GENERATION IS ON THAT LIST ABOVE 80 MILLION, NOT BEYONCE. RIHANNA IS HISTORY LIST WITH LEGENDS LIKE VAN HALEN, THE DOORS. They’re definitely at the table with us.

LOL, oh so Columbia is saying, “nope, we’re not going go fund the album, out of the $50 million dollar deal which includes marketing and many other projects, you Pepsi will pay for the album”. She’s looking for that Adele factor. but Adele didn’t need a superbowl and a pepsi endorsement….She’s making moves regardless, good for her!

    • Vandrea December 11, 2012

Is this the same Adele who just did a song for the Bond franchise? Artists need to score major commercial success on their own before these kind of opportunities come their way. I’d bet that If Pepsi and the Superbowl came knocking, Adele would gladly answer. Don’t try and make this like Beyonce is going beyond what the next artist would do if presented such options.

    • From The Hive December 11, 2012

Beyonce and Adele are two completley different artists with different agendas and motives. What about all the other legends that endorsed pepsi and the superbowl?

And yes, only Beyonce can get the job done.

LOL @ fuming losers up in here doing the most for the King’s $50 million.

If you haven’t read the deal PROPERLY, that includes a $50 million USD cash PLUS full promotion for the album + singles.

BEYONCE is crossing $410 million by the end of February if she won the lawsuite by Gate5.

    FUMING = Keep fuming.

    • Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave) December 11, 2012

Where does it say $50 million USD in cash? Pepsi can’t even give Simon Cowell $50 million USD in cash, not without advertising.

Pepsi is not good for your health.

LOL@Rihanna’s silly ass stans who — in addition to being full of s*** — are so pea green with envy over all this that they are staying up past their bedtimes to come here and fail at playing business analysts; thinking that everyone is as dumb as they are to actually buy into their impaired spin.

The bottom line is that Pepsi knows that Beyonce is a name and brand who is large enough to invest in, and who will turn a profit for them. This deal is similar to the one they had with Michael Jackson in the 80s and 90s. Yes, they’re going to be involved in additional (not primary…additional…) marketing of Beyonce’s music so that they can link it and her to their brand and ad campaigns…and they’ll probably sponsor her forthcoming tour…but to even imply that Columbia is out of the loop, is at all disinterested in being the primary producer/promoter of Beyonce’s next album, or will be taking a backseat to anything related to it is so stupid that it becomes sheer hilarity. I know you’re desperate to downplay this very lucrative business deal that Beyonce scored for herself, because you’re salty that it wasn’t Rihanna, but, seriously…you’re going to have to do better than that. Beyonce makes millions for Sony Music (more than Rihanna does for Universal, that’s for damn sure…which is why she can take 2 and 3 year breaks in between albums.) They wouldn’t let her go even if she asked to leave.

Oh, and to say that they’ll take Beyonce’s profits and use it for Adele just proves that you don’t know what the f*** you’re talking about. Adele isn’t even signed directly to Columbia and Sony. Her label is XL Recordings, which is an independent label that has a distribution deal with Sony; meaning that the bulk of her financial responsibility falls on them, and that they pocket the bulk of the money she generates. Sony is paid a fee for the additional services they provide for them. By contrast, Sony makes a helluva lot more money from Beyonce than they do Adele, because unlike Adele, Beyonce is signed directly to them. And even with this Pepsi deal in place, Sony will still be the primary bankroller of her music, and collect most of the profit. Pepsi will pay Sony licensing fees to use her songs, however the bulk of their profits will largely come from Beyonce personally endorsing their product. And any profit her music makes from it being associated with Pepsi they’ll have to share with Sony.

    Idiots.

You have no idea what you’re talking about, so hush. Again, this is just jealously on the parts of Rihanna fans, because she has *nothing* going on right now that comes comes even close to this kind of mega deal, worth this many millions, that will promote her on this kind of scale. And why would she? No corporation as large as Pepsi would even ponder considering Rihanna for something like this big, because frankly she isn’t good for it. She’s still trying to live down being fired from Nivea. You think it’s an industry secret that the real reason Def Jam has to put an album out on Rihanna ever year to keep themselves from going broke with her, because her albums don’t generate a longterm profit? Please. Furthermore, the Superbowl would *never* invite Rihanna to headline a halftime show, because (in addition them not being able to trust that she wouldn’t do something vulgar) they know that she’s a terrible live performer, who wouldn’t keep up the energy from the game, and that no one would go out of their way to watch her try. Rihanna would have people in the crowd going to the bathroom, and viewers at home changing the channel, during her set.

Sorry Rihanna fans, but this was an article that *really* isn’t for you to comment on and throw around your usual nonsensical b*******. You’re completely out of your league with this one. Go listen to one of the songs she recorded with her batterer boyfriend, look at her topless photo floating around Twitter and Tumblr, or watch her performance of Mariah Carey’s “Hero,” and maybe you’ll get a sense as to why she wasn’t the one sought after by this multinational billion dollar corporation to partner up with.

Beyonce’s great, but i can’t approve of this pepsi thing.
Pepsi is diabetes in a can, it promotes bad health, and leads to obesity and mortality. If Beyonce had a deal with a liquor company i would have not had a problem, because people have drank liquor for hundreds of years.
But theres an epidemic of obesity, and health issues, and i always thought of beyonce as being someone who might promote healthy lifestyle, but that’s not the case this time, and the image of those hundreds of cans in the shopping trolly is a bit tacky to me. I Still like Beyonce, but i’m quite disappointed in her lately

I am happy for Beyonce but did she not do a wellness campaign with the first lady of America or does that not count anymore? I foresee a Pop album and few R&B tracks that will be the only way to ensure success globally. She had better come with a very strong first single otherwise this could be a disaster.

  74. Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave) December 11, 2012

    @Gilberto

See, dumb b****? It isn’t about the money or sells.

Gilberto, Frank Cooper is working for a multi-national company, it’s always about MONEY. Frank Cooper will have to answer to the board of directors who will want him to justify spending $50 million USD on Beyonce without any dividends (if they won’t be). The BOD will be on his ass, he knows this.

In other words, they want QUALITY. They want to associate Beyoncé’s image to Pepsi. They want her status and brand.

That is a lot of crap. They want something commercial, something that’ll push their brand. Again, PEPSI Co is not a charity organization, it is a MULTI-NATIONAL company which cares for only one thing, its bottom line.

B****, Pepsi is worthy of over $66 BILLIONS! BILLIONS. $50 million is dust for them. B****, who are you to say how much Beyoncé has to sell? Did you forget that you stan for a basic b**** like R******? Everything she touchs FLOP. ‘Styled To Flop’ was axed because of horrible ratings. ‘Battleshit’ is one of the biggest flop of all time. Nivea dropped her. LOL.

No CEO has ever sunk $50 million USD from a multi-national’s coffers and survived the fiscal year. The Board of Directors will be on his ass, they’ll want an explanation. Frank Cooper has got his own people to answer too, his job is on the line too. Beyonce better deliver, she might cause someone to join the unemployment line.

    • Louis December 11, 2012

Girl why do you care so much. Have a seat.

    • Gilberto December 11, 2012

      @Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave)

B****, you’re using your OPINIONS over Frank Cooper’s statements. It just shows your lack of marketing knowledge. Who the f*** are you to say who much Beyoncé needs to sell? LOL.

    • TinaMinaj December 11, 2012

You say all those things and say it’s all about pushing their brand coz they are all about money YET you call Beyonce a flop and irrelevant??? LMAO!!! Pathetic desperate stans like you that post dozens of comments on a post that has nothing to do with your fave need to get a life…

  75. NFG (No f**** Given) December 11, 2012

I’m very happy for beyonce! Smh at these jealous haters. Lol we all saw that coming anyway. She got em shook.

  76. Louis December 11, 2012

That can is f****** s***! Only Beyonce can make a pepsi can look s***!!!!

  77. TherealTEA December 11, 2012

Stop it! First off she isn’t getting 50 million dollars as her fee. Her fee is however included in that 50 million. If they paid Nicki 12 million you know Beyonce is getting paid anywhere around 18-20 million for doing this. Maybe even more. The other money is for promotional use. Tours,Videos, Commercials ect. and will all be used to promote her next era as stated in the actual article and as for her being in threat of being dropped? Not even plausible. Even with a flop album and era she managed to sit pretty on forbes with 40 million earned and you honestly think that’s they’re letting her go anywhere? Keep trying to use b******* as a pacifier because you can’t handle the fact that she is going to do well this era. The only thing this era can be crushed by is a s***** first single and she knows better than to release another RTW so she’ll be just fine. NY times and many other credible business outlets whom writers have actual business degrees are praising this deal ! Why? It’s an amazing deal far from a bad one or a 360 contract (LOL) but I digress. I’ll just let you uneducated morons think what you want. It’s just sad you have to try and diminish her accomplishment all because it’s not your “fave”. At first it was “She is without a doubt going to flop” now it’s “She better do thriller numbers or she is still a flop” (lmao) Go drink bleach like seriously.

  78. Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave) December 11, 2012

    TheRealTea

Sony has been in the music business for a long time and even they know that Beyonce’s first week sales have been dropping by 100K each era and each era sells less albums than the previous one. 4 was a disaster for Sony because they had a huge budget for it and did major promo only to sell 2.5 million. Sony also knows that over 70% of Beyonce’s sales are accounted for in the US. Sony know Beyonce is not a global brand but a Local one, they played it safe with Beyonce’s 5th album until Pepsi Co bailed them out with this 360 deal.

    • Darren Lighty December 11, 2012

And the moral of the story is: Beyonce is still going to be on pepsi cans all over the world and will undoubtedly be selling out tours all over the world like she normally do because only local people do tha rightt. Now DEAL.

    • TheRealTea December 11, 2012

Read this carefully and throughout and than commence to your seat.

A.) I..Am (2008) sold more the Bday (2006) it was not until “4” that beyonce had an album under perform. So how are her over all album sales CONSISTENTLY declining as you claim? Stop fabricating.

B.) Her first week sales NEVER go under 300,000 even in an era where she didn’t sale. Let’s us not forget that expect for 4 ALL three of her previous albums did over 5 million WW.

C.) This is the biggest music market in the WORLD. Enough said. Of course the majority of her sales are going to stem from here. Being able to sale in the biggest music market makes you local when other acts from other countries main goal is to sale here? LMFAO #STOP

      D) Lastly and most importantly with your flawed stupid ass logic Rihanna would have been dropped ages ago. Yes your fave the reason you’re here speaking in tongues and spewing nonsense. After GGGB Rihanna had an album under perform. After “Loud” Rihanna had an album under perform and from the looks of it may have another one on it’s way to under performing yet you want to try and come for Beyonce? Rihannas sales are NEVER consistent she has only had 2 big eras out of 7 Loud and GGGB . Beyonce has had 3 out of 4 I..AM,BDAY and DIL. Why are you even talking? I mean do you really believe the mess you type? Just STFU. If this was rihanna you would be all up and down this post calling it the greatest thing ever. One bad album does not outshine her whole catalog. That one bad album STILL managed to get her nominated for a grammy and still sold more than any other R&B album in 2011. Not even PEPSI would deal with her if she was really that much of a risk. Get over it. She will do very good this Year against all the negative energy people like you throw at her.

      • TheRealTea December 11, 2012

and let me add to C she sales WW not just in the states. If she was really local Pepsi wouldn’t be launching a GLOBAL campaign with her. Stop the stupidity.

    • Mariah!!!! December 11, 2012

But 4 was the biggest selling RnB album of its year so…..EPIC FAIL!

  79. Darren Lighty December 11, 2012

Beyonce my body is ready. Watching your concerts on TV give me more life than half the lessers I’ve seen live and the flesh. Im so excited for this era!

  80. lola December 11, 2012

Beyonce is a very smart woman and knows how the music business works. She has the marketing down pack, but she just needs the right singles. “4” flopped because not only were many of the songs boring, most of them were strictly old school R&B and hardly anyone is checking for that now-a-days. Most of her fans like the mainstream music she releases…. the urban crossover and the pop. That is why I Am…Sasha Fierce did so well. It sold 7 million copies. It will be hard for her to sell what DIL sold, which was 11 million, but if she can sell at least 7 million, she’ll be good.

  81. WOLVERINE GIRLS December 11, 2012

  83. Remey December 11, 2012

    Ok….

So as much as beYAWNce gets on my nerves, this Pepsi deal is doing wonders for her music. But tell me this….a good artist doesn’t need an endorsement to make big blows with music. Did we fail to see Rihanna? Talk That Talk did wonders with NO PROMO! NO PROMO!!!!!!!! Bey is struggling to get this music relevant again. Get on Rih’s level.

  84. B. Hill December 11, 2012

    You’re an airhead. Shut up.

  85. soulmusiq December 13, 2012

Some of these comments are bit elementary and ridiculous. First off there is no way in life or even in existent should Beyonce be mentioned in the same sentence as the late Michael Jackson.

Do you people honestly think just because she is on a pepsi can that makes her a legend??????

That is not what makes you a legend. What makes you a legend is ORIGINALITY, INNOVATION, taking musical risks, songwriting, CREATING and not simply chasing after popularity and media attention as overrated Beyonce does. Very disrespectful that you people would compare her to MJ which she is NOT. There is ONLY ONE MJ

    • soulmusiq December 13, 2012

Whether Michael Jackson was on a pepsi can or not he STILL would be a legend because of what HE DID not because he was on a can dumbasses

Beyonce is overexposed this was not a good move for her. Pepsi is primarily USA based and NOT GLOBAL like you guys are implying. Do you know what GLOBAL is?

Global is outside America and outside the UK.
