Product Vs. Promotion: Christina Milian

Published: Wednesday 12th Dec 2012 by Rashad

Long before she rode high on charts with her signature hit ‘Dip It Low’, Christina Milian was by no means a stranger to the spotlight.  Spending most of her early teen years aboard various Disney broadcasts, her late teen years – like Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears before her – saw her sprout from Disney darling to sex kitten.

Indeed, it was 2001’s ‘AM To PM’ that helped awaken interest in the young singer.  Armed with dance moves and vocals similar to R&B belle Mya, Milian quickly drew comparisons to all of the genre’s early millenium maestras.  Unfortunately, that critical acclaim was not matched commercially as the album fell on deaf ears…

However, the buzz was certainly just enough to build anticipation for the singer’s next effort – 2004’s ‘It’s About Time’.  And, time it was…to ‘Dip It Low’.  The lead single from the singer’s sophomore effort skyrocketed up charts all on the heels of a killer East Asian inspired instrumental, glossy/sexed up video with choreography to match (and a little help from rapper Fabolous).  Landing the singer’s first (and only) top 5, it seemed Urban Pop’s new leading temptress had arrived.

Despite the album’s second single ‘Whatever You Want’ obviously not giving fans what they wanted in a follow-up, the album was still able to float on the success of ‘Dip’ alone.

Unfortunately, her career seemed to follow the song’s advice as it, yet again, dipped low.

As two years would pass before fans got their next peek at Milian, she re-emerged with the Jazmine Sullivan-penned ‘Say I’.  It appears the fans said “no, thank you” in response as the album failed to meet the success of its predecessor (as has every single since).  New record deals and relationships with producers (Dre of Cool & Dre and marriage to The Dream) impelled promises of new material – none of which ever completely surfaced (despite a few leaks that drummed up insubstantial buzz).

So, what’s the problem?  Urban pop’s undying comeback kid has kept a high social profile including a gig on NBC‘s ‘The Voice’, but is it enough to thrust her back atop charts?

    • A.MILIAN December 12, 2012

do you still f*** to get tree internet?? smh, b****** these days… you are definitely a hater…

      • A.MILIAN December 12, 2012

        *free

  2. Sleazy December 12, 2012

I would love to see her comeback!! She is dope and how she got dropped for rihanna is Beyond me I think the money they put in rih could have gone to the much prettier classier and the more talented 1… But rih was spending to much time on her knees so she got the deal smh

  3. IDK December 12, 2012

I wish her the BEST! She has potential to be amongst the tops in the game. She just needs the right team. Hope young money can be that which Im kinda skeptical of but we’ll see. Good Luck Milan!

  4. Monstarebel (Tamartian) December 12, 2012

No one cares for her as an artist……..

  5. Here 4 Sterling Infinity December 12, 2012

She has what it takes but she needs a full revamp!

    • IDK December 12, 2012

      right!

  6. Kylla December 12, 2012

She isn’t interesting. She has tried many times, and failed. And I’m sure she was on her knees much more than Rihanna! Hataz!

  7. Let’s Be Real December 12, 2012

What’s sad is this girl turned down S.O.S which turned out to be a HUGE HIT for Rihanna.Who knows what would’ve happened if she had done the track( probably would’ve flopped but you never know) she’s pretty much done. Host the voice and receive those child support checks from The Dream little head having ass. Plus you’re beautiful!girl enjoy life

    • IDK December 12, 2012

      CTFU! you crazy.

    • ENOUGH ONIKA December 12, 2012

But her vocals are too strong for S.O.S. Some songs just don’t fit every artist.

      • Monstarebel December 12, 2012

her vocals to strong??? Lmao! Rihanna has more range then Christina hun

      • ENOUGH ONIKA December 12, 2012

Girl sit. Yelling and belching ain’t range. Every Rihanna song is in the same octave and that only goes up one note for the bridge. You tried tho..

      • IDK December 13, 2012

CTFU!!!! Youz a FOOL @ENOUGH ONIKA. Belching tho? lol! heell naw.

  8. MUSICHEAD December 12, 2012

Christina is too boring to be a solo artist. She should have started a group to surround herself with other girls who would collectively garner attention from comsumers.

Her voice is very 1 dimensional and borderline annoying when listened to for long periods of time. I’ve tried to listen to one of her albums but I always lose interest or fall asleep before I’m half way through.

She could be a singles artist if she played on her latin roots but a successful pop star will never be. She should take some classes and focus on acting.

    • IDK December 12, 2012

Thats a good idea @the latin roots part. I wonder has that crossed her mind? J-LO did it and she was a huge success at it. But It seem like ever since she made that move tho, she never really fully crossed backed over to r&b/ hip-hop. But hey, thats cool.

      • MUSICHEAD December 12, 2012

You’re right. That’s what set Jlo aprat from everyone else.

    • HeHaHeHa December 12, 2012

Thing is, Christina Milian is almost like unknown for being latin/hispanic. To the general public, they think she is black.

So if she did NOW in the game and state of her career, I think that she will come off inauthentic to most casual fans.

      • MUSICHEAD December 12, 2012

What’s with all these spelling errors I’m making today? Lol. I need to slow down with the typing lol.

Anyway…I don’t think it’s too late for her to switch lanes at all. She isn’t well known enough to be identified one way or the other.

When most people hear “Dip It Low” they start dancing because they recognize the song. They have no idea who the artist is singing it.

      • IDK December 13, 2012

@MUSICHEAD, right, i dont think its too late either.

  9. dstrock December 12, 2012

She’s s*** but she really doesn’t have anything else that’s particularly notable about her. *shrugs*

  10. ENOUGH ONIKA December 12, 2012

It’s definitely promotion. She needs a particular “selling” pitch that the public can catch on to. Rihanna has that fake bad girl sh*t and GaGa has the nutcase/I’m a t***** pitch. She needs something special the public can look at her and easily recognize. And slightly better music..And not to marry every producer and expect free hits…

  11. who da f*** cares December 12, 2012

Musicial she sucks simple as that tbh. She cant write produce and play an instrument.

  12. john December 12, 2012

You forgot to mention her deal to MySpace, us against the world, and passing up on SOS

  13. GO December 12, 2012

    SHE FINE AS HELL THO

  14. Aynon December 12, 2012

Like pretty much every new black female pop artist of the early 2000s she was completely and utterly eclipsed by beyonce, and then by rihanna. Out of all the black pop girls from back in the 2000s they are the only ones making waves.

Ashanti, Amerie, Mya, Ciara and Christina M are all victims of Hurricane Beyonce and Tropical Storm Rihanna.

Entire careers wiped off the map by 2 storms in 2 years…

    Tragic really.

    • Pop Royalty December 12, 2012

      WELL-SAID.

  15. jjkhk December 12, 2012

just like nicole shouldntbeasinger, keri hilson etc she just lacks the xfactor… and thats the key to being a star..

  16. 12345 December 12, 2012

She was too confusing one day pop one day urban. Only Rihanna pulls this off.

She needs to GREAT rnb songs than can crossover and stop beign too la/popgirl-ish.

Sing better greater material (so amazin part 2 please) and performe some dope choreo and voila shes on top.

She just needs to stop following trends and TRYING to be a POPSTAR. Be a rnb/latin girl and just work hard. and stop with many break. for the next three year drop three albums and stop being lazy and stop getting involved with lowlife producer.

  17. MISHKA December 12, 2012

Aaliyah then Ashanti then J-Lo then Beyonce. The spotlight was always on one of those girls, that’s what happened.

“When you look at me” still is my favourite song and video by Millian. She was cute and sweet like a candy. That image worked for her. Then she switched it up with “Dip it low” and “Say I” and she kinda got lost in trying to be edgy and gangsta.

If she wants to keep singing, she should go with what works naturally for her: cute, flirty and sweet. And she should keep doing movies too.

And please let go of “the f-ck for tracks” thing. Diana, J-Lo, Mariah, they all kinda did that. But they were able to go beyond it in order to become legends and superstars. And Christina was able to move on too, unlike Cassie.

    • HeHaHeHa December 12, 2012

      The f*** is Diana?

    • MUSICHEAD December 12, 2012

I don’t think we can add Aaliyah to this conversation. She was never a big star. She was on her way to becoming one tho.

  18. Christina Aguilera December 12, 2012

Send this hopeless child back to Cuba! She’ll never be a judge like me. Maybe she can open a Cuban cigar shop or something. Or she could be one of Fidel Castros wives. The sky is the limit, dear!

    • ENOUGH ONIKA December 12, 2012

Hush you overgrown walrus in a wig.

      • HeavyHeavy December 12, 2012

Onika you cant shade s*** with your clown wigs. #StupidHoe #Monster

      • ENOUGH ONIKA (0 GRAMMY NOMS…) December 12, 2012

I don’t stan for Onika so your shad is invalid

  19. opinionsarelike.. December 12, 2012

Teedra Moses still Collecting those Checks for Dip it Lo.. i can hear her background vocals too.. that is probably the best thing that came out of Christina Milan’s Career.

  20. Ash Ketchum December 12, 2012

    Who?

  21. Dev December 12, 2012

Christina was a pop artist with a pop voice and a not very good one at that. as her voice was annoying and lacked any real emotion.
Christina’s songs were more memorable than she was, Dip it Low screams Teedra Moses all over .
Christina is attractive but is just too two dimentional

  22. skintightjeans December 12, 2012

B**** needs to go and just be known as The Dream’s baby mama. She’s boring although she is very pretty but the heaux is not interesting. AT ALL! She needs to stick to being photographed walking in the mall with her kids and collecting child support checks.

  23. KylieciousRevolution December 12, 2012

I’m surprised not many people mentioned her single Us Against The World, I really loved that track ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJoCvMP9Uns
I think she needs a lot of promotion and I really hope she doesn’t follow the dance-thing, I don’t think her voice will suit well for that kind of style.

  24. Pop Royalty December 12, 2012

Product vs. Promotion: Where are Milian’s mishaps?

    answer : B E Y O N C E.

  25. Queen Navy December 12, 2012

She’s always been boring and never stood out. She was boring when she first came out and did the whole cute pop girl thing, then she was boring when she tried to s** herself up. “Dip It Low” was successful simply for being a hot song. Anybody could have had a hit with it. Had nothing to do with her personality or style.

  26. John December 12, 2012

Christina milian is a talented individual. She can write, dance, and act. She just never really got a fair shot. Christa, ashanti, and j.lo all came out around the same time. Singing the same type of songs. Christina wasn’t able to properly promote her debut alumb in the united states due to 9/11. Her alumb came out around 9/11. So her record label cancelled some of the promo campaigns they setted up for her. Say I got a lot of tv play on bet and a lot of radio play on the urban stations. Her third album got a lot of press and debuted with big numbers. But her record label ended up, pull the plug on her alumb to fast. Def jam had to let a couple artist go. But because rihanna was still new. They decided to pick rihanna over christina.

  27. Vandrea December 12, 2012

Some people just weren’t meant to have long careers. Her, Cassie, Mario, Amerie, Omarion, and I’m almost tempted to throw Ashanti in that list too (but to be fair, her success was bigger and spread out enough to still kinda/sorta justify the occasional write up/update)…I get perplexed every time I see articles on them posted on these urban music blogs, as though they are still in demand. These people are 1 and 2 hit wonders from over half a decade ago. They weren’t able to maintain the momentum. It happens.

  28. touche4you December 12, 2012

She’s just too boring for me.

  29. Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave) December 12, 2012

When she first came out with AM to PM and Look at me, she struck me as a black version of mizz Britney Spears, cutesy pop songs for teenage girls, her career was pretty much set. The mistake she made was when she moved from being Christina Milian to being Beyonce (B-Side). The vocal runs, the cheesy dancing, the blonde weave, girl bye. That’s where she lost it, when she tried to be Beyonce. She should have learned something from Rihanna, the one thing Rihanna is good at is re-inventing herself.

    • ENOUGH ONIKA (0 GRAMMY NOMS…) December 13, 2012

Everyone was doing the blonde wig lol! And Beyonce was not the first.

      • ENOUGH ONIKA (0 GRAMMY NOMS…) December 13, 2012

And Rihanna “reinventing” herself seems to be coming to a backfire with general public. Hence her 88% sales decrease…Changing to a ratchet ho this era didn’t work..
