Rating Rihanna: Rih-Visiting A HistoRIH of Hits

Rihanna is indeed pop’s premier polarizer.

With seven albums in just as many years, the Grammy-winner has amassed a wealth of hits that trounce that of rival singers who have twice her tenure (and talent).

But, even with the history books singing her praises and logging new entries of her achievements on a (seemingly) weekly basis, some music buyers are just not sold on Rihanna…

Yes, those enlisted in her faithful #Navy exalt their captain’s every move, but other music lovers seem reluctant to board the cruise ship of mediocrity.  With a menu full of popcorn and fly-by-night hits, some argue this, alongside the ‘Hard’ hitmaker’s inconsistent live showings, ultimately dismiss her ability to truly serve as pop’s top diva.

Be that as it may, that hasn’t stopped Rih’s reign over singles charts with 12 #1s and over 20 top 20s.  While the same cannot be said for the albums that birthed those singles, we turn to you to ask:

With 7 albums under her belt and ‘Unapologetic’ being the first to reach #1, do you feel it is the most deserving of such honor?

If not, tell us below…which of her albums represent her best body of work to date?

LOUD is her best album point blank period B******…

    • Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave) December 9, 2012

LOUD is not her best album, it is her best era.

      • HALF AMAZIN December 9, 2012

I agree, best era but not the best album. I like Rated R and Unapologetic the best. I like dark sounds and emotion. Loud and TTT are bubbly and fun. I love this bish!

      • Monstarebel (Tamartian) December 9, 2012

Well IMO I feel loud is a masterpiece from the music to the image everything was on point with that Album / era….xoxo

    • Oh Baby(B****** Will Deal) December 9, 2012

i agree 100% @mosta that era changed my view on her,for a minute i became a fan, then i rebuked my fan card once she dropped TTT(her worst album ever, along with the first 2).She hasn’t been able to capture me they way she did with LOUD with any of her releases thereafter. I’ll just stick to Slayonce who never disappoints music wise 🙂

DIFFERENT DAY AND DIFFERENT TIME BEY HIVE BLUE,,,
Rihanna has named Madonna as her idol and biggest influence, and said she wants to be the “black Madonna”. She said: “I think that Madonna was a great inspiration for me, especially on my earlier work. If I had to examine her evolution through time, I think she reinvented her clothing style and music with success every single time. And at the same time remained a real force in entertainment in the whole world.”

Rih ,, also cites Whitney Houston as a major influence and idol Mariah Carey has also been cited as one of Rihanna’s influence and idol, whose song “Hero” she covered while performing at a school talent show Of Janet Jackson, Rihanna has commented that “she was one of the first female pop icons that I could relate to … You have to love Janet.”

      • Lax December 9, 2012

        Rih ,,,,,Influences,,,
Beyoncé Knowles has been named as a major influence, citing that she was inspired to start her career after watching Knowles on television as part of a Destiny’s Child performance.

      • Lax December 9, 2012

Rihanna commented that Marilyn Monroe and vintage clothing served for visual inspiration for the music video “Hate That I Love You” and “Rehab”; in contrast, the “dark, creepy” scenes of “Disturbia” have drawn comparison to Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

    • Lax December 9, 2012

Her other musical influences include Alicia Keys, Fefe Dobson,Celine Dion, Brandy and Gwen Stefani.Jon Bream of the Star Tribune commented “In the tradition of Madonna and Janet Jackson, Rihanna has become the video vixen of the ’00s … Rihanna has perfected the pout, the long-legged strut and trend-setting hairdos that keep women and men alike checking her out on YouTube.”

      • Lax December 9, 2012

George Epaminondas of InStyle considers Rihanna’s music videos to be “cinematic” due to her “blend of lush island rhythms and swinging pop and … mischievous sensuality.”

      • Lax December 9, 2012

Rihanna’s music contains strong influences of Caribbean music which include reggae and dancehall. In an interview, she stated that while growing up in Barbados she grew up listening to reggae music and when she came to the United States she was exposed to many different types of music. The video for “Rude Boy” was inspired by her Caribbean roots.

      • Lax December 9, 2012

Rihanna is heavily influenced by the Jamaican singer-songwriter Bob Marley and stated “he’s one of my favorite artists of all time ,,, he really paved the way for every other artist out of the Caribbean”. She also built a shrine in her Los Angeles home dedicated to Marley.Rihanna has covered Marley’s “Is This Love” and Bob Marley & The Wailers’ “Redemption Song”. Rihanna herself has influenced the singers Rita Ora and Justin Bieber.

Rihanna has influenced Calvin Harris and Ke$ha they have both stated this recently.

    • king z December 9, 2012

usually i would agree, but how is sam starting a stan war when he is comparing RIHANNA TO RIHANNA. he’s not putting her up against another fanbase.

      • mkigz December 9, 2012

Yeah but this prompts people to start stanning for their fave. It’s inevitable.

    • king z December 9, 2012

that maybe true but people stan for their faves on any of these post. the headline could read “Merry Christmas” and members of the beyhive and navy would come in arguing with each other. its inevitable either way lol.

im just saying at least, for once, he isn’t INTENTIONALLY trying to start it

      Good Night BB!!!!

  9. Spot Love December 9, 2012

LOUD is by far the best work or hers, and as a huge fan honestly pops queen is not an attainable status for just yet. I feel as if she has some more tricks to pull out for us to crown her the title

    • Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave) December 9, 2012

LOUD is not her best album, it’s her best ERA.

  10. king z December 9, 2012

i still say rated R is her best BODY of work even though it may have not had her best SINGLES.

rated R was a perfect blend of pop and R&B…which is the rihanna i like!

    • Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave) December 9, 2012

Rated R is not R&B, it’s a mixture of Reggae, Adult Contemporary and Alternative Rock.

      • ENOUGH ONIKA December 9, 2012

        Alternative rock???

      • king z December 9, 2012

yes there was some alternative rock in it “rockstar 101” came from that album i think. but i still feel there was some R&B fusion in some of the tunes. they may have not been straight up R&B like ‘music of the sun’, but still

      • Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave) December 9, 2012

        @king Z

There was a lot of Alternative Rock on the album. Ok, I will admit hat a lot was fused with some R&B but majority of it was Alternative Rock and Adult Contemporary.

Wait is over (mix of Urban and Alternative Rock)

        Hard (Urban)

Stupid in love (Adult Contemporary pop)

        Rockstar 101 (Alternative Rock)

Russian Roulette (mix of Adult Contemporary and
        Alternative Rock)

        Fire Bomb (Alternative rock)

        Rude Boy (Reggae/Ragga)

        Photographs (Pop)

        G4L (Urban)

        Te amo (Reggae)

Cold Case love (Adult Contemporary Pop)

        The last song (Rock ballad)

      • ENOUGH ONIKA December 9, 2012

What’s Hard, G4L and Rockstar then? And I think you mean Dance Hall not Reggae..

      • Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave) December 9, 2012

        @Enough Onika

G4L (Urban), Hard (Urban), Rockstar 101 (Alternative Rock).

Dancehall = Ragga but yes, Dancehall if you want to get technical.

  11. King bey December 9, 2012

    MOTS-Boring as S***, Flopped
AGLM- some catchy songs, yet unmemorable . Mediocre success.
GGGB- One Of Her Best albums to date , Success .
Rated R- HER BEST ALBUM, too bad it flopped .
    Loud- Better Thana GGGB, Success
TTT- Awful, and full of album Fillers with the exception of (drunk on love, WAWL,WFL,And WHYB),Mediocre Success .
Unapolegetic- Boring . Full of album fillers as well . Except for ( Diamonds, And Stay), it put me to sleep .
    THAT’S MY OPINION.

    • Flop Cheeta Whora gave Rob an S** from her 20 guys December 9, 2012

Her body of work is more diverse and artistic than Old fat Beyonce. Rated R was made when she was only 20. When Fat was Beyonce she was singing ” you got work it out ” None of her LP’s are a flop, that is why she has outsold beyonce and 41m.

      GGGB outsold B day

      Loud out sold IAMSF

TTT AND AGLM outsold 2 and MOTS IS AT 2 M ww so it is tied with 4.

In translation : Rih has and will always outsell fat old beyonce.

      • Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave) December 9, 2012

Come on, not today, it’s about Rihanna. We’ll go in on Beyonce on some other post, let’s keep it cute with this one. This is about Rihanna’s best albums, let’s keep it that way.

      • Gilberto December 9, 2012

        “Loud out sold IAMSF”
Stop lying, b****. IASF outsold Loud. IASF sold 7.5kk, Loud barely sold 6kk. Stop with the b*******. In only 3 countries, IASF sold more than 2 million than Loud. Keep delusional, dumb b****.

      • Troy December 9, 2012

And this is why the 2 fanbases can never get along. Always count on a pathetic member of the navy to say something stupid.

      • Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave) December 9, 2012

Where did IASF sell 7 million? It sold like 6 million, which is 500K less than LOUD.

IASF only sold 2 million copies in Europe, there’s no way it sold 7 million, that number is inflated.

      • Gilberto December 9, 2012

Inflated, b****? You make me laugh. Wasn’t DefScam saying that R****** sold 37 million albums (LOL) and you come talking about my stats? What b*******, b****. IASF sold 2.7kk in Europe, dumb b****. You’re definitely misinformed, b****. IASF definitely sold over +7kk in the entire world, keep pressed. I counted using OFFICIAL numbers, IASF sold +7kk without South America (minus Brazil), Africa and Asia (minus Japan). Don’t talk about charts and sales with me, b****, ’cause you know you can’t argue with a HBIC like me, dumb ass b****.

      • Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave) December 9, 2012

IASF shipped (not sold) 2 million to Europe, how can it sell 2.7 million when it shipped 2 million? I call BS.

      • Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave) December 9, 2012

Check IFPI, they have IASF at shipping 2 million to Europe, not selling 2 million. You are lying with it selling 2.7 million in Europe. That 7 million records sold WW is inflated, it did just under LOUD.

      • Gilberto December 10, 2012

        @Mrs Robyn Brown (Beyonce’s Weave)

LOL. You’re so dumb, b****. LOL. LOL. LOL. First of all, sales and shipment are completly different things. LMFAO. It shows that your acknowledgement of the music industry is really limited.
IASF sold +3 million in USA and only got 2x Platinum certification (aka 2 million copies shipped). Do you know why? Because Beyoncé/her label didn’t pay RIAA to certify her album as 3x Platinum. LOL. That’s it. ‘The Beyoncé Experience’ (DVD) sold +400k and only got 3xP. Dangerously In Love sold +4.9kk but it only got certification for 4xP. Beyoncé could easily pay IFPI to certify IASF as 3xP, but she doesn’t want. LIVE WITH IT.
You can sell 10 million albums and don’t even get a certification and you can also sell 500k and get a Platinum certification. See Gimmicki Minaj’s last album, it sold 600k and it got 1xP certification.
Shipments aren’t album sold, b****. Shipments just show that AT LEAST a X amount of copies of an album hit the stores.
P.S. Yeah, the artist/label needs to pay to get a certification. How much? I don’t know.
P.S.2. If you were used to follow charts, you’d know all that and you’d know that it’s pretty common thing to happen.

Rated R was her best album musically. That album did not get the recognition that it deserved in my opinion. GGGB is her best album commercially followed by Loud.
This would be my order from Best to Worst in terms of her body of work:

    Rated R
    Loud
    GGGB
    Talk That Talk
    Unapologetic
    A Girl Like Me
    Music Of The Sun

Do you feel odd interupting an intelligent debate to post that you feel Rihanna is talentless and cannot compare to the drug addict in your avi, or the fake boob golf ball cheek whale whistler? Or the skeleton who is now a vegas showgirl? #POORDAT

      • QUEEN RIH AND QUEEN BEY CLAPS FOR BASIC BITCHEZ!!!!! December 9, 2012

SIS I LOVE YOU!!! BUT DONT YOU EVER COME FOR WHITNEY AGAIN!!!! WHITNEY ON DRUGS HAD MORE VOCAL ABILITY THAN 98%OF THESE B****** OUT NOW!! INCLUDING RIHANNA!!!

  23. ENOUGH ONIKA December 9, 2012

Rated R all the way. Her first solid concept album with consistent visuals that coincided with the lyrics and content on the album. The tour was able to be set up cohesively as well. The fashion was on point, the bold and straight-froward attitude, the hairstyles, just everything about this era was solid. Hasn’t been able to top this era yet.
SIDENOTE: I still feel G4L should’ve been released as a promo single like Wait Your Turn. The video concept would’ve been dope with Rihanna being in an all female s*** gang of assassins, shot in black and white. I think all the videos should have been cinematic and left the audience on a cliff hanger until the next video so the single choices and videos all ran together. THAT would’ve put that era further over the top and would’ve been different from anything out during it’s time.

    • Teacher December 9, 2012

” I think all the videos should have been cinematic and left the audience on a cliff hanger until the next video..”

That would’ve been a good idea!

      • ENOUGH ONIKA December 9, 2012

I know right!! “Russian Roulette” would be a good start to the mini movie, then head into the promo single “G4L” were Rihanna’s gang of assassins break her free from being captured in the first video.

Then the second official single would again be “Hard” with this video focusing on Rihanna leading her gang and living a life of crime.

Then slow it down with “Photographs” were in this video she’d be on the run living in a motel room looking back at photos of her past life and the video explaining why she lives the life she does.

Then end the movie with “Rockstar” were she’s found and has to fight off everyone who was after her in a bad ass action sequence which ended the era.

“Rude Boy” could’ve still been released but with no video OR have the video take place in between “Hard” and “Photographs” we’re the video is actually a dream she’s having then she wakes up and is followed by the “Photographs” video.

“Te Amo” could’ve still been released also but set two years after “Rockstar” were she’s living in spain and the same video used already would have been fine. “Te Amo” would still only be an international release though..

So many creative things they could’ve done with this era due to such a well though out album.

I will do no such thing! i sip Rihanna’s illuminati p**** juice for hits and..well..u commented didn’t you? so i guess its working?

    1. RATED R
    2. Loud
    3. Good Girl Gone Bad
    4. Unapologetic
    5. Music Of The Sun
    6. Talk That Talk
    7. A Girl Like Me.

  26. S****** Blonde December 9, 2012

If we are talking about quality, it goes like this:

    Rated R.
    Loud.
    GGGB.

Those three are her best albums, followed by “Talk That Talk”, “Unapologetic” have some good songs in it but is not entirely good as those above, “Rated R” is her best album but it wasn’t successful so commercially i think “Loud” should have been #1, everything about that era was flawless.

My favorite song by her is “Fire Bomb”, that song is perfection, “Love Without Tragedy / Mother Mary” comes closer too and i still don’t understand why, why she didn’t put “Hole In My Head” in the STANDARD EDITION of “Rated R”, that was my Jam.

    • Lax December 9, 2012

Rihanna is the most versatile artists of this generation….

  28. joker December 9, 2012

actually all could be named for a time they ran. the first 2 where young an hip. GGGB was branding. Rated R perhaps the most substantial in all directions. followed by the freedom to do whatever now. more durt and fun.

  29. Monstarebel (Tamartian) December 9, 2012

  30. Remey December 9, 2012

I agree that LOUD was the best era with a great album. However, the Unapologetic Era is just getting started. I won’t rate it among the others until the Tour begins/3rd single is released. So far, it has started off with a great start. 777 Tour, #1 Album, and #1 Single…. Seems good to me. Especially since Rihanna has change up her normal upbeat lead singles. Diamonds and Stay are obviously a different approach to her era. (see WFL-You Da One: Only Girl-What’s My Name, Umbrella-Shut Up and Drive,, Pon De Replay-If It’s Luvin That You Want)

  34. Saetana December 9, 2012

I can’t put Unapologetic in the list yet as I’ve only streamed it a couple of times (busy) and haven’t really decided how many songs I like on there yet. As for the others:
    1. Rated R
    2.. Loud
    3. Talk that Talk
    4. GGGB
I can’t rate the first two as I’m not familiar with her early work, apart from the odd single here and there ;o)

  35. SHA (F*** The Navy and LAX) December 9, 2012

The c*** named Rita WhOra about to kill herself after they drop her ass after this basic f****** tour kiiiiiiiiiiii FLOP

Be that as it may, that hasn’t stopped Rih’s reign over singles charts with 12 #1s and over 20 top 20s.

God Damn Rita WhOra is such a FLOP thatgrapejuice stans for flop b****** #ICANT!!!!!!!!!!

  37. RoyalKev December 9, 2012

It’s funny that the songs I like most are from the albums that rank the highest in this poll. Now looking back, I realized that Loud deserves a little respect. It was a refreshing era for Rihanna. Rated R felt like it was a more grown up Rihanna and some of her all time best songs came from that album. Still hands down, the winner for me is GGGB. It’s simply her most listenable album to date.

Great post, do more of these for other artists. 🙂

  38. Gilberto December 9, 2012

    1) GGGB 6/10
    2) Rated R 5,5/10
    :huge gap:
    3) A Girl Like Me 5/10
    4) Loud 4.5/10
    5) Music Of The Sun 4/10
    6) Talk That Talk 2/10
    7) Unapologetic 0.1/10

Rated R is her best work of course but why is everyone rating MOTS so low. I loved MOTS.

  42. NFG (no f**** given) December 9, 2012

She has no best albums. Only best singles.

  43. Flop Cheeta Whora gave Rob an S** from her 20 guys December 9, 2012

By the looks of twitter, she killed the xfactor final. Folks are on twitter, saying they are crying. Folks are saying she handled that b**** like it was her stadium tour. LOL LOL Rita old whora did not have that feedback. Her performace was getting dragged all over twitter.

  44. NFG (No f**** Given) December 9, 2012

Unapologetic shoulda been a rerelease of rated r. Talk that talk shoulda never been made and Loud shoulda sold more cuz I liked it better than GGGB. The rest of her albums r forgettable tho. I still think she’s a singles artist tho. I wouldn’t want to hear a full album of her nasal wailing TBH…..

  45. AmbeRussell December 9, 2012

good girl gone bad is seem as her best album bc of the explosion she had and the huge success she became. she was seem as a 1 hit wonder possibly with pon de replay and then as a cute girl with a few good songs (sos and unfaithful), then gggb came with umbrella, disurbia, take a bow, dont stop the music, etc. large sales and made her a star with this album
then there was rated r, when she went dark and did a lot of different stuff to the left of the cute girl we knew her as
then came loud, gave her a lot of hit singles, solid selling album, a well put together era, better than rated r commercially. the loud tour was a success, making a lot of money.
talk that talk, to me, came and went with 2 decent to huge singles, where have u been and we found love, but not a lot of successful singles with only like 3 mv from this area.
ad then there is this area. i havent heard the album but it is her 1st #1 album, yet it also dropped out very fast from the top spot the following week.

so… most successful era of music is LOUD, deepest album is RATED R, best transformation from fun singer to super star status is GGGB

Rihanna is just a singles artists
NON of her albums are a hard worked form her as an artist ..
GGGB, RR & Loud are her mostly what I can call albums!
The rest have 2,3 single material and full of fillers
    #TRUTH #FACT #DEAL
That’s why Rihanna will NEVER inspire other artists to come ..
Coz she’s a manufactured one with NO identity . PERIOD
    #TRUTH #FACT #DEAL

a singles artist whose albums are not full of hits? wow shouldnt it be the other way around?
funny how you would name gggb and loud her best albums when those are the ones made so every song tops the charts and yet you make it sound like that is a bad thing when clearly thats what you look for in an album…?

  48. Special Delivery December 9, 2012

None of her albums stand out as a collective body of work but shes got some banging singles. If I had to choose Id say between Loud and Rated R.

  49. Benron (King of The Phucking Navi) December 9, 2012

      • Benron (King of The Phucking Navi) December 9, 2012

Loud is not cohesive, but it is her 2nd or 3rd best album tbh.

  50. Kyle December 9, 2012

This is my Rihanna album ranking from highest to lowest…
    1. “Rated R”- I loved everything about this album. It’s her most cohesive album and I loved the darker tone of it. She had a rough year in 2009 and this album is reflective of that.
    2. “Unapologetic”- I didn’t like it at first but this album has grown on me quickly. It reminds me a bit of “Rated R” because of some of the lyrical content. I like pretty much every song except “What Now.”
    3. “Good Girl Gone Bad”- This is what really pushed Rihanna to the top and she has stayed there ever since. This album was fun and catchy.
    4. “LOUD”- This is my favorite album in terms of the singles she released. “What’s My Name?” never gets old to me. Aside from the singles though, nothing else really sticks out. As a collective body of work, I wasn’t too impressed.
    5. “Talk That Talk”- I feel Def Jam just released this album for the sake of releasing it. Nothing really impressive and more just microwave pop music. Blah. “Birthday Cake” is still my jam though.
    6. “A Girl Like Me”- I loved “SOS” and some of the other songs were decent but I haven’t really listened to this in years.
    7. “Music of the Sun”- Forgettable debut. Some of the songs were ok but nothing memorable. I feel like most people would consider “Good Girl Gone Bad” her “debut album” and forget about the first two.

With 7 albums under her belt and ‘Unapologetic’ being the first to reach #1, do you feel it is the most deserving of such honor?

If not, tell us below…which of her albums represent her best body of work to date?
    ___________________________________________________________

artistically : RATED R, This album deserved to be a #1 album more than Unapologetic , but commercially 🙄
Commercially : LOUD and GGGB and even TTT , but artistically ? 🙄

‘Unapologetic’ marks her FIRST attempt to find a balance between the 2 classes above … i guess , and it WORKED commercially , but artistically ….. it is showing time by time i see 😀

I know that a lot of Rihanna’s fans have a difficult time with her when she is being introspective. Well, this is when she is the best.
