She’s one of the world’s brightest stars, boasting a discography even her more talented competitors couldn’t say they could compete with. Unfortunately for Rihanna though, her new LP ‘Unapologetic’ is struggling to live up to its global success in her domestic market, the US.
So low are her sales this week, she has fallen out of the Top Ten just three weeks after release.

Despite the chart reign held by its lead single ‘Diamonds’, the LP dropped six places to #12 this week moving an unfortunate 59, 503 units since the Billboard 200 was last tallied.
As it stands, the project has suffered a sales decline of 88% in the space of two weeks, and now sits 11 spots beneath Taylor Swift‘s ‘Red‘ which returned to #1 this week with 170,656 units sold.
Impressive, considering it hit Pop shores almost two months with debut sales of 1,208,000 in the US alone, three million copies worldwide- shifting more units in two months than the Fenty’s 2011 LP ‘Talk That Talk’ has moved in a year anywhere in the world.
Here’s hoping the coming year sees the album pick up steam before the release of Beyonce‘s fifth studio album.
For if it doesn’t, her fans may be tasked with explaining what will the promo launched in its aid, it has thus far failed to match chart runs held by both those of her rivals and her own earlier releases.

Album sales are very mediocre during this holiday sales. Only Taylor and P!nk are doing well. I blame radios for giving too much room for single sellers. Without the support of POP radios, it’s quite hard to sell albums unless you’re a white AC/country singer. The problem with Alicia is that neither pop nor r&b radios are feeling ‘Girl On Fire’.

Rihanna’s sales are fine and perfect on target for the type of artist she is.

Well then Rihanna needs to trade her audience for Taylor’s, because no matter how you slice it and explain it, Taylor does better. Give me the older demographic that’s willing to buy whole CDs over those ADD “tech savvy” teens and 20-somethings whose interests don’t go past iTunes singles downloads any day.
BTW, I doubt that many old people are actually buying Taylor Swift’s music. TS largely appeals to the exact same primary age demographic that Rihanna does. To put it simply: Taylor has convinced more people that her whole album is worth the money, while Rihanna hasn’t. Taylor is a more trusted brand. People hesitate to invest in Rihanna, because they don’t trust her album to be worth the $10.

Do you idiots ever get tired of running down whole discographies and siting certifications, as if you’re proving anything?
Five *platinum* albums? And how many of them are multi-platinum? As a “It”-girl, most of Rihanna’s discography should be RIAA-certified 3x platinum or more. What the hell kind of hot pop star consistently stops at just platinum? That’s terrible. But that’s also why she has to release a new album every year; to make up for not being able to push an album past platinum. Holla back when Rinanna puts out an album that ships and sells 4-6 million in the U.S. alone.

Guys this is really not a big deal. Rihanna is not a big seller and never has been. She is a singles and media artist.
I think her album is doing very well considering the fact that she’s never had a blockbuster album. Her label doesn’t expect her to sell millions of albums. Her label banks on her ability to sell millions of singles and perform to sold out crowds at her shows. They profit from her 360 deals.
If we were still in the 90′s or even 2002 for that matter, Rihanna would be a non mother****** factor.

Actually, I am a music industry veteran so trust and believe I could teach you some things about the music industry.
Artists like Rihanna take advantage of the fact that sales are on a decline and instead of releasing quality albums they turn out forgetable pop candy for the young and impressionable to gobble up in droves.
Young consumers only benefit an artist for a good 10 years before they grow out of the bubble gum pop that they once adored. Look at Christina, Britney, Backstreet Boys etc. They all struggle to go platinum now that the teens have abandoned them.
When they are no longer able to sell because of their youth they are forced to rely on their talent to stay relevent.
Christina can sing. Britney can dance. What will Rihanna have to fall back on in 5-10 years when people lose interest in her?

All of them have at least 2 diamond-certified albums, and most of their others are multi-platinum. Can Rihanna say the same? They didn’t just sell singles, sweetheart. In their prime, they actually pushed units…which is something Rihanna has always struggled to do. Rihanna’s best selling album would have been a sales disappointment for them when they were at their peaks.

You are so right. Some mediocre artists we have now have taken advantage of the state the music industry is in. Their blind stans think they would be selling as huge as some 90´s acts if we were in the 90´s era right now but they wouldn´t, real music sellers would be topping both singles and album charts. They are lucky radio plays the game of supporting generic mess cooked in a month so they release 7 singles per year. Trying to make it seem like they are so huge and influential, but they aren´t, rate of flops still shows (e.g. Rihanna and her only one #1 per 7 singles released)

I love this site but I’m sick of them playing Rihanna off against Beyonce! Everyone knows that Beyonce is far more talented than Rihanna, hell even Rihanna knows that! I just think that everyone came down so hard on Rihanna for her past two albums, i know I did! I used to be a huge fan of Rihanna when she released GGGB, Rated R, and Loud! They were great albums! TTT and her latest effort haven’t been. I think she just needs to pause for a minute and take time to create an album thats worthy of being released. Mariah got worked to the bone, and looked what happend to her! She had a breakdown, took 2 years off and released The Emancipation of Mimi which was a massive successes. Beyonce and Adele make great albums because they take time to make great albums. They get 4-5 singles off an album, tour that album, then have some time off to recharge their batteries and get creative again. This is was Rihanna has to do, because when she gets it right, SHE GETS IT RIGHT.

Rihanna has always been a singles artist who managed to go platinum. She is a PERSONALITY. While I do think her vocals & performances are getting better she has a lot of work to do! 240k in the first week, 75k in the second and 59k in the third is pretty good/standard.
Alicia Keys is an ARTIST with a massive fanbase! There is no excuse for Rihanna to be outselling her. She should be selling off of her name alone. 160k in the first week and 75k in the second is DISMAL for her.
