Ask hip hop’s reigning highnesses – Lil’ Kim, Missy Elliott, and Nicki Minaj – and they can attest to being titled such at some point in their illustrious careers (the latter more than her rap predecessors).

Indeed, in the heavily male-dominated genre of rap, trying to “hang with the boys” has either constituted hypermasculinization or explicitly detailing bedroom antics.  Either way, rap’s estrogenic entities have had to take the extreme route often to little notoriety…

But, as artists like Elliott and Kim began to straddle the genre fences by collaborating with pop’s heaviest hitmakers, they found their social profile rising as well.  Such formula is one a certain Nicki Minaj has seemingly subscribed to and perfected as her pop potion has reeled in many-a-patron.  Conversely, her “harder” hip hop servings seem less desired by the general public despite cries of fans and spectators alike for the return of “the old Nicki”.

So what’s the recipe for rapstress success?

Even acts like Trina and Foxy Brown, who once found themselves camel toe to toe with the Kims and co. of yesteryear ,have found less success in their attempts to evade succumbing to pop positions – a decision that is costing them greatly. And, while a new school lay in wait to track their heels across hip hop’s female foundation, are they being taught that the formula for successful male rappers is different than that of female rappers?

For, history has shown, fewer male rappers have had to go the pop route and even when they do (i.e. Flo Rida), they are oft less respected.

      1. WRITING YOUR OWN LYRICS!!!!!! many female rappers struggle with this…this enables you to have tons of songs and features which puts your music out there…you are also independent of waiting on someone to give you dope bars

      2. DOMINATE ALL AVENUES…music and everything else…Nicki is the second female rapper to kill every avenue but what makes her different from Latifah is that she is still a female rapper..Latifah had a very short rap career and success only came to her well after her rapping days

      3. SPEAK ELOQUENTLY…you must be able to network with the top dawgs…Nicki can be very hood, but also knows when to be professional

      4. BE HANDS ON…Nicki is in charge of every aspect of her career which prevents anyone from screwing her over…even though it’s more work it is worth it in the end

      Clearly Azealia Banks and Iggy Azalea are taking notes…it’s over for any female rapper comebacks though…time for the new generation

        lol “DeezNUTS”…you went a little ham on the older rappers but you still make me laugh….this is coming from a person that likes almost every female rapper…after hearing Missy & Eve release their struggle tracks i was confused as to why they suck so bad…it ‘s not the lyrics…it’s just that they don’t fit in anymore…all of it sounds forced and annoying…Trina just dropped the ball too, which shocked me because her last mixtape was so good…so yea i think i’m done having hope in them…but their old music will forever slay lives

    IT’S THE MAINSTREAM, CORPORATE LABELS THAT MAKE THEIR ARTISTS SELL OUT.

    The purpose of a label signing an artist is for monetary gain, so technically the artist is the label’s investment. They want to do what’s current aka what appeals to masses. Back in the day, everyone listened to hip-hop for lyricism, times have changed, as people began to party like crazy, the music that went along with it flooded the mainstream. Everyone blames Eminem, and other rappers who crossed over and garnered mainstream success, for selling out but in reality it’s not their fault, labels control artists. Adding to this, if you were offered 2 million dollars to make “Pop” music, would you? Any sane person would.

    I’m not a big fan of hers but I’m 99% positive that Nicki is making the “music” that her producers and record label executives want. Ever notice how when pop artists always wind up coming out with their “own” album because it’s something they always wanted to do? That’s because they’re pressured by their label to make music that will sell, sell, sell millions of records, not necessarily make the kind of music they want to make. So, in a way, they’re selling out from the very beginning so they can gain popularity and make millions and then find the courage to make their own music one day. Then if they flop, at least they’ll have millions of dollars to rest their heads on at the end of the day.

    IT’S ALL A MONEY MAKING BUSINESS.

      Nicki wasnt trying to “appeal to the masses” . Her fans like that music. I’ve been with NIcki since the beginning and I like starships, I like whip it, I like superbass, i like turn me on. Superbass is her biggest hit and it was somewhat of an accident. So as an artist you say, “hmmm ok, I guess I make similar songs on my next album.”

        Stop acting like Nicki’s album is selling like iPads on black Friday. She’s not selling albums either. Her second album has been out for the longest and still hasn’t sold a million copies yet. Where are those illustrious pop fans who buy albums…and why aren’t they buying hers, since she went so far out of her way to cater to them? Hmmm.

        All Nicki is is a female version of Flo Rida; she sells digital singles and ringtones, while her actual full album is largely overlooked and unsold. The hip hop community has a long history of buying albums, when they are compelled to do so. If Kendrick Lamar and Wale aren’t selling, then maybe it’s because they aren’t proving themselves to be compelling enough. You fools here at TGJ **kill** me with acting like pop fans actually buy albums, when the reality is that all they do is hang out as iTunes cherry picking singles.

        I don’t see One Direction selling like The Backstreet Boys, Taylor Swift selling like Shania Twain or Katy Perry moving units like Paula Abdul during her peak. Again, all pop fans largely do is buy singles. So to me it’s damn stupid when black acts sell out to pop, thinking that it’s the smart, money making thing to do — it’s not. Usher and Neyo are seeing the poorest sales of their career as they churn out dance/pop, thinking it’s where the money is, while it actually chases away the audience who bought Confessions and In My Own Words. Same with Nicki and Flo Rida. Nicki isn’t seeing Hard Core #’s and Flo Rida for damn sure ain’t selling albums like 2Pac, Biggie and 50 Cent did.

        These pop pandering acts don’t sell albums, all they do is sell singles and ringtones. And, seriously, WHO gets in the business to be known as a Ring Tones artist? That’s a joke. So quit acting like that type of music is flying off shelves, because it’s not.

        And Latifah’s jazz album was a one time novelty piece that happened years after she earned her iconic status and peaked. It wasn’t an attempt to sell out or jump ship to another genre, it was her doing something different one time…long after she had already established herself as true woman of hip hop, that’s why no one looks at it as being a sell out piece, or holds it against her. Nicki has been doing pop from virtually the beginning of her career, trying to manipulate hip hop fans and pop fans into buying into her at the same time, and everyone smells the fakery.

        I wanna know who told you selling 3.8 million worldwide was good. Holla back when a Nicki album sells that much in the U.S. alone. She’s supposed to be one of the hottest acts in music right now, but her sales are horrid. If you’re in the “It”-girl stage of your career, then your album sales should be approx. 3-6x platinum US and 10+ million WW. Not 3.8 WW and less than 2 million in the U.S. That’s shitty.

    Yes lauryn did have the best selling cross over album. I meant latifah had the best cross over overall with different ventures. After Lauryn’s 1st album nothing much happened with her. I think the only movie she did was sister act 2(way before her album). What about endorsments, other acting roles, etc.

    Lauryn: Hip-Hop/ R&B/ neo soul

    Like her or not, NIcki is a very unique artist. NO ARTIST has been able to straddle the fence between Rap and Pop and make hits in both fields. NIcki also makes BUSINESS moves which besides Queen Latifa, no female hip-hop artist has done consistently. When NIcki is done, she will be legendary. I’m sorry to tell you.

    In order to be a successful female rapper, you must have a successful MALE rapper behind you! Kim had Biggie, Eve had DMX, Remy Ma had Fat Joe, Nicki has Lil Wayne, Trina HAD Fat Joe. If you lose that link, you lose you career. Ask any of the aforementioned, excluding Nicki!

    I am NOT a Nicki fan, but you gotta admit that she’s doing the damn thing. Her new album isn’t doing as well as Pink Friday, but she has sooooo many business ventures outside of rap.

    Most of her original fanbase stuck with her during the Pink Friday era, but she lost them with the Roman era. That’s where she went wrong musically. She NEEDS the bulk of her original fanbase AND the pop audience to be successful. And the fact that shes going around cursing urban radio hosts out isn’t helping either.

    This is a great hot topic! Rap has become mainstream mainly due to the POWER THAT BE assuming control of the genre. It’s funny to note how much the genre has changed from it’s early days where you had a wealth of diversity within the genre from conscious rappers (Lauryn Hill, Common Sense, KRS1) to the fun rappers (Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince) to the political rappers (Public Enemy) to the “gangsta rapppers (NWA, Snoop Dog) to what you have now….basically a SAD JOKE designed to denigrate BLACK MEN & BLACK WOMEN for the most part.

    There is a clear difference between the paths male and female rappers can take! A few rappers can take the Pop route. Folks can blast Flo Rida but he has done a masterful job of creating a lane for himself in the Pop World! I’m not a Nicki Minaj fan but you have to give her credit for playing the game! She started as Lil Kim’s clone to get the “gangsta” crowd who missed a Lil Kim type (gritty, pretty, sexual, saultry voice, spitter etc) and adapting a Lady Gaga strange” winning” style! Of course this will not happen for all FEMCEEs. I do think they will grow tired of Nicki especially since she is now beefing with black “white favorites” and white folks (i.e. Mariah carey & that guy who looks like 10 miles of bad road, Steven Tyler). Anywho, there has been no women to every step into the game without being introduced by a male Rapper which says a lot about who runs thing from a male-female perspective!
