As evidenced by the rant of ‘Believe’ beau Justin Bieber‘s manager, it’s pretty safe to say that some camps are still up-in-arms about the 2013 Grammy nominations unveiled last night.

Indeed, every year sees some scorned team or artist supporter feel “cheated” due to an absence from the nominations tally (see: Jill Scott’s rant last year), but this year marks a noted difference in that  A) the male domination of categories, B) the absence of hip-hop and R&B from major categories, and C) the glaring, 2011-instated removal of “gender-specific” categories.

With only acts who released material from September 1, 2011 to September 30, 2012 eligible for consideration, the wealth of overlooked talent is earning a collective side-eye from many-a-music lover.  Just ask fans of Brandy & Monica‘s ‘It All Belongs To Me’, Mary J. Blige, Lana Del Rey, Madonna,  and, of course, Nicki Minaj & Justin Bieber…

Surprise: Miguel

No major commercial impact with ‘Kaleidoscope Dream’ (yet), but still managed to nab ‘Song of the Year’ (amongst other noms) for ‘Adorn’. Kudos.

Snub: Pink

‘Truth About Love’ only gets one nomination for ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’ despite being hailed one of the best albums of the year and earning the singer her highest first week sales ever.

Surprise:  Frank Ocean

We know he’s had a great year, but topping it off with 6 Grammy nominations?  Wow.  It’s great to see a new artist tie for most nominations.

Snub:  Female singers

Don’t expect to see a female sweep the Grammys this year as there is a “dearth of diva” on this year’s tally.  The day of diva domination (i.e. Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Adele, Lauryn Hill, Norah Jones, Taylor Swift,  and Amy Winehouse cleaning house) is on a temporary vacation.

Surprise: Kelly Clarkson’s nominations…finally getting long overdue recognition

Snub: No Nicki Minaj..anywhere…not even as a featured artist

Surprise:  Jeff Bhasker ‘Producer of the Year’ nod

Snub:  No “top sellers” listed in ‘Producer of the Year’ category (i.e. Redone, Rico Love, Bangladesh/Sean Garrett)

Surprise: Beyonce‘s ‘Love On Top’ grabs nom, while R&B starlet Tamia nabs two for ‘Beautiful Surprise’

Snub:  Brandy’s ‘Put It Down’ as well as Hip Hop/R&B overall being noticeably absent from Grammy’s top prizes (bar ‘Thinkin Bout You’ in ‘Record of the Year’ category).

    I think Brandy “Put It Down” should have been nominated also “It All Belongs To Me” with Monica as well. Hate it or love it, they sung the hell out of that song. Maybe 2014 Brandy will get what she deserves.

      the thing is 99% of them songs wasn’t bad,they just did deserve to be on the same album,the album was bad,but 99% of them songs wasn’t in my opinion,she could have gotten a nom,not because others was nom and she wasn’t dosn’t mean they are better than her,if hope she go through with her work and make a solid album with some of the songs like what is on the re-up,she is a hard worker with will continue to put in work,if it,s there for her to win a grammy in the future she will.

I even like the R&B joints she released (Right By My Side, Sex in the Lounge).       Not a Nicki fan but ‘Starships” was a good release for her. It was very well received. Now perhaps the fact that it was used for a comerical champaign may have had some impact on i not receiving a nomination. And I will admit that I am reaching with that statement. They may be upset at her “ANTI-CHRIS” Excorist (sp?) performance last year? Who knows? This years GRAMMYS looks like a” hot trail park” mess!

    My problem with these nominations is their decision to eliminate solo gender categories. There would have been more opportunity for some of our favorites had there still been a Female R&B solo and Male R&B solo categories. I am not in favor of female and male vocalists competing against one another. Also, Put It Down and It All Belongs to Me should have been nominated.

    As much as people hate on nicki minaj.. there is no reason why she did not deserve at least one nomination… songs from roman reloaded has been on constant rotation on pop and urban radio’s STARSHIPS breaking record for staying on the top ten on billboard 100 so many weeks, POUND THE ALARM top 20 hit, VA VA VOOM also on heavy rotation, TURN ME ON with david guetta they played that song non stop and was top 5 on billboard, and so many other songs and features that she has .. this woman works her ass off.. and also the roman reloaded sales are not as terrible as people make it seem.. its close to 800,000 copies and its only been out 8 months… remember it took rihanna 1 year to go platinum on her last album… she did deserve to be nominated in my opinion.

    I am actually pleasantly surprised with some of the nominations this year. I’m glad they recognize acts like Tamia and Anthony Hamilton who have been staying true to their R&B roots. I am pretty disappointed that Melanie Fiona’s “The MF Life” was nominated for Best R&B Album because it simply amazing. I hope she wins for Best Traditional R&B Peformance and I hope Beyonce doesn’t win just because she’s Beyonce (even though I love her.) I remember that happened a couple years ago when Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” won over Melanie’s “It Kills Me” in the Best Female R&B Performance category and I was so upset. Beyonce’s song was much more pop than it was R&B. Lastly, I’m glad Nicki Minaj wasn’t nominated because her music this year was garbage. I hope Nas wins for Best Rap Album. He deserves it 100%!!!

        I agree though, Mariah probably was told (initially) that she would be the only female and I think she wanted to keep it that way. I am not by any means denying that Mariah being shady because we all know she throws more shade than a cloudy day, its just that I wish Nicki handled it better especially since she is one of the few BLACK artists out there that are successful (or somewhat) and the way she handled it really turned me off. That and this whole PF:RR era was just very messy from her material to her attitude. What you and majority of the barbz forget to realize is Mariah wasn’t a “diva” until much later in her career than her first 2 years like Nicki is emerging to be and that’s not a good look (I am referring to her interview on the “Breakfast club”)

        I guess, Nicki just lets people keep winning over her. Mariah, Madonna, etc lasted S long in the biz. not for their talent, marketability, etc but also because they are SMART. Every time Nicki gets in an argument, calls someone racist, etc she is being “reprimanded” by the media and it hurts no one but her. She has to know that this is a BUSINESS and if she doesn’t play it right, she will lose it. Much luck to her, but she really turns me off (I could have tolerated it if her material was good but……nah……).

    quantity does =/= quality. justin bieber isnt a good singer so he can’t fit with best pop vocal performance. i mean he was only nominated in the past for best pop vocal album and best new artist, so unless he does JT and make a future sex love sound… he wont see the grammy with out being on a feature with usher or someone who is a vocalist.
    Female singers did not release this yr. there were no power vocalist so who is there to nominate.
    Brandy put it down isnt that great of a song, and the fact there is no duo/duet/group rnb category, where would the song fit? not in best rnb song.
    Nicki’s singles were not grammy worthy and those are the songs that were submitted. good or bad, if she had submitted and released the better rap stuff, maybe she would have gotten nominations, but she didnt. what did she release that was really that good to be nominated? then u look at who she was submitted stuff against… she stood no chance. but this is what happens when u try to bring the other females down in your lane, when u are the only 1 left standing, u gotta go with the boys, so thats why no female best rapper is there any more since 04 or something like that (it woulda been taken out with the new rule n category change anyways)

    Okay the grammy’s acknowledge TALENT so to speak of. I appreciate them for honoring talented divas like Beyonce, Whitney Houston, etc…

      Okay since everyone wants to go in on nicki let me tell you why the grammy’s probably overlooked her this year. And it has nothing to do with her not being a good artist cuz she is and her first album proved that which is why they nominated her.

      1. Many religious folk thought her performance was disrespectful even tho I don’t think it was cuz I think her whole song was a metaphor for the Roman Catholic religion. It was misconcepted.
      2. She dropped the ball with stupid hoe. Her worst song to date
      3. RR was not as good as her first album
      4. She’s had a lot of media controversy.

      But it’s okay. People stumble but they learn to pick themselves up. Hopefully this might better her. I doubt this will stop her or slow her down. There’s been a lot of talented artists snubbed by awards shows. The grammy’s don’t have an excuse for that. They are just snobby musical elitists that nominate whomever they feel like TBH.

    Surprise: Miguel getting a nom for Song of The Year! That´s pretty huge and unexpected. And deserving. Congrats

    Snub: well I think the list is pretty good if you exclude that horrible girl and song called Carley or something like that. But I really think Lana del Rey could have gotten some noms. Although we have to remember they have reduced the number of categories this year (and in a way it´s for the better cos there´s no way people like Beyonce deserve 16 grammys, they clearly got lucky they were out in a period when grammys had too many categories)

    To me that “Stronger” song by Kelly Clarkson being so nominated is a little bit weird. I don´t think it is the type of song that should be nominated for a grammy at all.

    And people complaining about Pink not having more: get over it, her music is average. It´s ok if she has some vocal nominations here and there from time to time but that´s it

    About Brandy: I don´t know, they have reduced categories and I don´t think she had the best R&B album at all this 2012. Miguel or Frank did better

    Overall, not bad this year. 2012 has been very poor for commercial music. Grammys didn´t have too many options. I suppose they will do the right thing giving album and record of the year to the best ones

        No, if anything Grammys are worse because they essentially nominate the same talentless people that AMA, VMA, etc nominate. When you set the precedent for the best talents (hence the biggest music awards) then you should represent REAL MUSIC and real music =/= popularity or commercial success. Often times true masterpieces and great body of work tend to make little commercial impact/popularity (i.e. Erotica, Bedtime stories, majority of Prince’s music, etc). What is the point when they just select popular “it moment” songs/artists? I have never been here for the Grammys and their shady ways, like did Beyonce really deserve 6 Grammys for IASF?!!? Like seriously? Michael himself shouldn’t have gotten 8 Grammys for Thriller, it should have been for “Off the Wall” or “Bad”, both much better album imo. Even Adele didn’t deserve 6 Grammys (although I was happy for her), if anything ’19′ was better…….like the Grammys really suck ass. They have only got it correct with MJ, Aretha and a few others. It makes no sense to me and it bothers me that Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Bob Marley, Queen, Elvis, Mariah, Whitney, Celine, Madonna, etc have less Grammys than Alicia Keys (14) and Beyonce (16).

        Its just sad that great material has been ignored over the years! The grammys just tend to give grammys away like its nothing! Back in the day it was hard to recieve grammys like they do now! The impact and success that albums have do have an affect on the awards. But sometimes it cn become to unnecessary. (MJ, Adele etc) but like u said with legends such as diane, mariah, whitney and mj who have released amazing records which have been so brutally igored that its become ridiculous!! Alicia and beyonce winning 5 in one night but mariah winning none, mj not winning anything for bad (which made me very angry!) etc its sad! it just shows you how grammys dont mean anything! its the music, the quality, the talent and the fans!! THATS more precious than anything else!

What songs or albums that they’ve is worth buying or listening to , to even be looked at by the committee?

    Part of the problem is they streamlined and eliminated some categories. So there arn’t as many options. There used to be a “Best R&B Performance” and “Best Traditional R&B Performance” award and now that’s gone. There also used to be male and female categories and now they’re being combined. Fewer artists nominated and also fewer opportunities to win an award.

      What categories would any of her work have been nominated? Every rap category is filled with work that was simply BETTER than what Nicki Minaj released.

      Nicki does not release quality music. Yea it has pop appeal and may seem interesting to those who like it but a Grammy is given to a work that is OUTSTANDING and superior to anything else released that year. Not just because u like them.

    Madonna should be on the list “best dance album.”… she was the top solo tour of 2012! If anything it would be fun to see her do a Grammy performance… no less than the opener! She doesn’t care if she gets an award, but it gives her a reason to be there and perform as only she can. Biggest Solo performer in the world!
